Review

Doom/Stoner Rockers Almost Honest return with their new album The Hex of Penns Woods which is based upon folklore, history and culture of Pennsylvania where the band are actually from. Almost Honest also use their own personal experiences on this album as well. So there's quite a lot of different creative elements to this album which draws upon the Occult and various creative themes told through an exciting style of Proto-Doom/Stoner Rock. Almost Honest blend that mysticism with Funk Rock, Punk Rock, Garage Rock and Psychedelic attitudes which they've used within previous releases but none so more convincingly here.

The album has a vintage Garage Rock/Street Doom sound with a seedy Blues Rock flourish where you can detect influences such as Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath to name but a few especially within the opening tracks of Mortician Magician and Laughter Of The Deer Owl. The mood is quite upbeat despite some of the gloomy subject matter Almost Honest use for the main stories of these banging and kick-ass tracks. The instrumental work is flowing with 1970's Proto-Doom and Punk Rock energy with a sublime 1990's Grunge/Stoner Metal rhythm appearing on the heavier moments. Shades of Post-Stoner grooves elevate from the background and to the forefront of the music before changing into a loud BLUES ROCK explosion. You also have the added bonus of CROBOT's very own Bradley Yeagley sing vocals on the within Laughter Of The Deer Owl

Even though this album draws upon well-known folklore from Pennsylvania it's good to see Almost Honest using their own creative inspirations on tracks such as Laughter Of The Deer Owl and Alien Spiders which perhaps offer the most fun times with this album with a sense of freaky driven music which keeps the mood flowing between Classic Hard Rock and modern day Stoner Rock/Metal. The guitars are plentiful with a pure sense of Hard Rock excess with the reliance of OTT wicked guitar solos.

Fourth track Eyeless Herd does have a distinct early-era RHCP movement to it and it's quite a personal record according to the Press Release that came with the promo. You can tell that through the vocals and intense lyrics that accompany the track. Flashes of fast-paced and aggressive leaning Stoner grooves once again draws upon that FUNK ROCK element. The song does become more DOOM & GLOOM based which allows a more volatile Sludge Rock to appear and take full control of the whole song.

Almost Honest continue to expand within their own personal experiences and the Pennsylvanian landscape with the remainder of the album with more outlandish styles of Funk driven Doom/Stoner Rock with the album even adding Trumpets into the mix on Where The Quakers Dwell. I thought I was listening to a SKA PUNK song at one point but the heavy 90's Funk, Alt-Rock and Stoner Metal sounds keep things on course with the band still playing with a fearless attitude which brings some of the heaviest moments on the album.

The next two tracks Amish Hex and Haunted Hunter have the potential to be future classics for Almost Honest to make themselves known with. As both songs go into many different directions storywise with Almost Honest using tales of the OCCULT within the main inspiration for both songs. These tracks alone offer the most interesting sounds and extended instrumental parts of the album with a subtle Blues Rock flow becoming more DOOM based with flashes of Classic Hard Rock guitars.

The final section of the album continues the same creative and spiritual journey but with Almost Honest trying a more experimental style when the mood calls for this. The standout tracks here have to be Colony Of Fire and Goliath's Lamp for myself. As they have the most interesting ideas especially how the music plays out. The album doesn't go the journey you expect but lLmost Honest remain true to their creative beliefs and lay down some of the funkiest, freshest and freakiest Stoner based sounds you'll hear this year.

The Hex Of Penns Woods is an unexpected and crazy delight with Almost Honest delivering one of the weirdest and adventurous Stoner Rock albums you'll hear this year. Throw in the epic sounding production values that allows The Hex Of Penns Woods to have quite a contemporary and classic sound that demands your full undivided attention.

This album is the REAL DEAL and could propel Almost Honest onto greater things within the Doom/Stoner Rock scene.

Almost Honest - Laughter Of The Deer Owl (Single Review)

Release Date: November 24th 2023. Record Label: Argonauta Records. Formats: DD/Vinyl

Laughter Of The Deer Owl - Tracklisting

Laughter Of The Deer Owl

Review

Doom/Stoner Rockers Almost Honest released another track called Laughter Of The Deer Owl from their upcoming new album The Hex Of Penns Woods. This time round the band plays a classic style of Hard Rock, Doom Rock and Funk Rock blended within a blistering Psychedelic Stoner based package. Reminding me of Valiant Thorr in places with Almost Honest playing a no-frills style of music with production values allowing the track to have an almost LIVE RECORDING quality.

The song is downright catchy with the right level of Stoner based aggression with the band playing some epic THIN LIZZY inspired grooves with a frantic Stoner Metal presence. There’s some small hints and illusion to the grand story in the upcoming album The Hex Of Penns Woods conveys where a vengeful Wizard takes revenge on the folks who have wronged him in the world.

Almost Honest have the mighty power of famed underground label Argonauta Records behind them for the upcoming album and it may help Almost Honest to reach a greater audience within the Stoner Metal scene. The two tracks that I’ve heard so far are building up real excitement within the scene that will no doubt see Almost Honest impress a lot of folks when the album is released in November 2023.

Almost Honest - Amish Hex (Single Review)

Release Date: September 12th 2023. Record Label: Argonauta Records. Formats: DD

Amish Hex - Tracklisting

Amish Hex

Review:

Amish Hex is the new song from Doom/Stoner Rockers Almost Honest and it’s a conceptual track about a bullied Amish child who finds a mysterious magical book where the boy conjures a vengeful wizard from who then takes revenge on the folks that have wronged the child.

Well, Almost Honest have their Doom Metal and Occult Rock credentials there just within the story itself.  The music is a different story with Almost Honest playing a fast-paced style of Stoner Metal grooves that draws upon bands such as Red Fang with traces of Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult shining through.

The song works best when Almost Honest embraces the seedy attitude of the 1970’s Doom Rock scene with that Classic Hard Rock mentality. The music still offers a thrilling style of modern day Doom/Stoner Metal based heaviness. Throw in some epic free-flowing grooves and a song that truly RIFFS hard.

With an excellent concept behind this track, if this is the basis for future material then Almost Honest could be onto a winner here.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

US Heavy Fuzz Rockers ALMOST HONEST Sign to ARGONAUTA Records; New Album During Fall

Coughed up from a smoke filled corner deep in the Central Pennsylvania rock scene in 2012, Almost Honest is a four-piece riff conspiracy dipped in enough sludge to choke mammoth, enough groove to make the dead dance, lyrics that could summon a Sasquatch and make her sing along, and a tonal brilliance that was crafted by master sound-smiths and enchanted by sonic-shamans.

Says the band: "We at Almost Honest are absolutely thrilled to be working with Argonauta Records to release our 3rd record. We have been working tirelessly since 2020 on our new tunes and we are happy that it finally has a home. We know that we are going to accomplish wonderful things together and we cannot wait to share with you what we have been working on."

Helmed by the darkly dulcet guitarist Shayne Reed, driven by the jungle rattling bassist Garrett Spangler, lifted up by the immense leads of David Kopp and powered by the ent-war thump of drummer Quinten Spangler, Almost Honest has evolved into a rock act to be reckoned with.

Focusing the energy they would have put into extensive touring during the past two years and using ritual druid magics, they conceived, wrote, and recorded a brand new album whose details will be revealed soon.

Almost Honest is poised to deliver more of their unique, creamy fuzz soaked, metallic prog-funk potion, with a riot punch live show that Pennsylvania head bangers have come to crave as soon as the world is ready!

An Interview With ALMOST HONEST

I've been a fan of self proclaimed "Groovy Sexy Viking Funk Doom Rockers" - Almost Honest for some time now and I feel bad for not reviewing their 2019 excellent album Seiches And Sirens. It's a quality sounding and highly energetic blend of Doom, Punk and Stoner Rock but played in an "HONEST" style.

The band were asking for folks from the Doom/Stoner Metal community to interview the band and I thought "WHY THE HELL NOT".

So here's an introduction to a great band you need to discover for yourselves.

Hi guys. Thanks for doing this interview. For people not in the know. Can you give a brief history of how the band came together and where it is today.

The band formed in 2013 while we were all in high school. Seth Jackson and I (Shayne Reed) have been in it since its inception. We did not get our final line up until we met Quinten Spangler through a mutual friend in high school. We went through multiple lead guitar players before finally settling on being a three piece. When we first started playing it was a mixture of thrash and radio metal before finally settling on the groovy doom rock that we are today. The transformation came as we matured and broadened our musical tastes. Today we have found a home in the doom scene and we would not want it any other way.

How would you describe your overall sound to someone who hasn’t listened to your music.

To make it brief we would say “groovy sexy viking funk doom rock.” A more elaborate description though would be fun, energetic doom rock with catchy hooks, vocal melodies and quirky lyricisms.

Where would be the best place to start for new listeners to listen to your music.

We would tell people to start with our most recent record “Seiches and Sirens.” If you would not be able to listen through the whole record we would recommend Fools Gold Flesh, Keystone and Dancing Shaman and the Psychedelic Cactus to get a feel for what we are about. Other songs to note off of our previous record would include Thunder Mouth, Cannibal Cowboy and Appalachian Sasquatch.

Your most recent album Seiches And Sirens was released back in March 2019. How was that album received by the Stoner Rock/Metal community in general.

It was received extremely well. Better than anything else we have released up to this point. We did the release all ourselves and were very humbled being featured in magazines such as Classic Rock Mag and others. The fact that people have taken time out of their lives to listen to our art is beyond gratifying. We got to ship this record all over the world from Europe to Australia. This is something new for us and it still brings us extreme happiness just thinking about our physical album being in different parts around the globe.

What influenced or inspired you when making that album.

We took influences from multiple places. One of the bigger ones was Pennsylvania folklore, myths and imagery. We wanted to share songs and ideas that have not been done before. We want to have people travel to our little part of the globe without having to leave their home. Another inspiration would actually be the band Clutch. I am very fond of Neil Fallon's lyrics and vocal delivery.

I’ve heard you’re in the process of making your new album. When will that be released and what can we expect to hear from it.

We do not yet have a release date but if I had to take a guess I would say 2022. You can expect the same groovy doom rock but with added elements of banjo, organ, bells, trumpet and other sounds. We never want to do the same thing twice so we wanted to take what Almost Honest is at the core and push it as hard as we could.

Is the new record going to be different to what’s came before it.

It will be different in some aspects and the same in others. We always want to have that sound that has people knowing that it's an Almost Honest song but we also want to explore and try new things. I think people will be surprised with what we have been able to come up with.

What comes first for you when recording new music. Lyrics or Music.

It varies. Sometimes I will be on a hike and I'll just get a vocal melody with lyrics and I will have to record it into my phone right then and there. Other times I will be at work and a riff will just hit me. Since I do not have my guitar I will have to sing my riff into my phone recorder no matter how weird my co-workers may think I am.

COVID-19 has pretty much put a stop to all life as we know it for the time being. How big of an impact has it affected Almost Honest And how are you surviving in this stressful time.

We are grateful that we have all had steady jobs through this time and our families are relatively healthy. We are very grateful for what we do have. We have of course had the new album delayed and tours cancelled but in the grand scheme of things our loved ones are healthy and we are glad for that.

After everything is back to some sort of normality. What does the future hold Almost Honest

Getting back on the road is a top priority. We are a live band through and through and we need to rock out with our fans. We greatly miss just talking with our fans and seeing what interests them. The second thing is being able to finally put some new music out as well.

Before COVID-19 hit. Did you guys perform gigs on a regular basis. Did you have a local scene in your home-town to perform regularly. Or do you have to travel further afield.

We tried to do weekenders twice a month so about 5-6 shows a month. Over the summer we would start doing our longer tours. We really do not have a doom scene in our hometown. We travel to Frederick, Maryland a lot and consider that our second home away from home.

How would you describe the overall Almost Honest “LIVE” Experience.

Fun and energetic. If people are paying to see a show I want to make sure they leave with an experience or story. We always try to go out into the crowd, climb amps, lay on the floor and just do whatever we can do to make the show memorable for people.

Thanks for doing this interview. Before you go, do you have any words of wisdom that you want to say to your fans.

Our words of wisdom would just be a simple love one another. When you come to our shows we are all family. Do not be afraid to reach out to us ever. We would love to talk to every single one of you. We will see you on the road.
