Review

Gods & Punks are shaping up to be one of Brazil’s finest Doom/Stoner Metal bands with their latest offering Death which sees the band take a heavier and ferocious sound with the constant shift to a gloomier identity. The album touches upon areas of Prog Rock and Psych Rock with a Proto-Doom atmosphere which sees influences from bands such as Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus and even Deep Purple with some of Alexandre C’s classic sounding vocals.

Opening track Slowburner opens with a huge SABBATHIAN sound which remains for the whole majority of the track but Gods & Punks play classic Psych Rock reminiscent of Pink Floyd. There’s a never ending approach of flashy Proto-Metal guitar solos and sullen Psychedelic sounds with a strangely soulful Stoner Rock determination that allows the song to be quite daring in all the right places.

Second song Loss Of Reality has a certain flow of 1980’s Hard Rock imagery with a Post-Gothic element which allows Gods & Punks to weave a melodic Psych Doom passage into their music with the Prog Rock structure coming into play on the middle section of the track. The vocals retain a sense of urgency to them with a deeply emotional core being felt from Alexandre C’s vocals yet again.

Third track The Night Of A Thousand Days sees Gods & Punk deliver a more FUZZED UP sound which promises huge sounding SLUDGY grooves that have a meaty and muscular presence. The sound can be quite aggressive, down-tuned and mean spirited in places but it’s one of the standout tracks allowing the band to give the record’s minimalistic sound a fabulous OCCULT METAL texture. The song is played at a fabulous slow-to-mid pace that allows the FUZZ ROCK vibe to crackle with a certain DEVILISH quality throughout.

Fourth track Deceleration opts for a seedy Blues Rock delivery which moves into PENTAGRAM and BLACK SABBATH territory and throws in a sinister modern day Stoner Metal appetite. The whole song feels like it was written for a classic 70’s Horror, Thriller or Slasher movie with how the whole story plays out within the decidedly creepy lyrics and Alexandre C’s Occult Rock based vocals. Pedro C, Rodrigo B and Gabriel S impress even further with some dynamic instrumental passages of their own making on Bass, Guitars and Drums respectively.

The final three tracks of The Space Between Spaces, Archimedes’s Screw and Black Box may not have the same creative “WOW” factor as the first half of the album. However, Gods & Punks still conjure up some brilliantly observed Doom/Stoner Metal sounds that flirts dangerously between classic 1970’s Proto-Metal energy and aggressive modern day gloomy expressions especially within The Space Between Spaces and Black Box.

Death is Gods & Punks most subversive, highly surreal, outlandish and brilliantly entertaining record to date that puts them firmly in the driving seat of becoming one of the finest Doom/Stoner Metal bands from the Brazilian underground scene.

Band Bio

Gods & Punks the boundary-pushing Brazilian stoner outfit, is set to unveil their latest sonic opus, "Death", on July 26, 2024. Released digitally and on vinyl through Electric Valley Records, this album promises to be a cathartic journey through frontman Alexandre Canhetti’s harrowing near-death experience in 2021. Recorded across continents between Santos and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Paris, France, "Death" is a testament to the band's resilience and artistic evolution.

"Death" tells a narrative woven through seven tracks, spanning 40 minutes of intense musical exploration. Reviewe

Mountains Of Garbage is the new EP from Doom/Stoner Rockers Gods & Punks who return after a three year absence and with some lineup changes compared to their last album. However, it’s business as usual with Gods & Punks playing more top-notch Doomed Out based Stonr Rock with a subtle Psychedelic Rock edge.

The EP has a more potent Classic Hard Rock sound which the band use to their advantage which you can hear and fully appreciate within the opening title track. Flashes of Blues Rock energy and some intense Guitar Solos are the main order of business with flashes of Monster Magnet riffs allowing this to be a damn good track to open the EP with. The vocals have a Space Rock element to them with the thrilling grooves slowly fading into space.

Second track Dinosaur Feathers takes its time to fully get going with Gods & Punks opting for a more mellow and laid back sound. The sound is quite solitary with small flashes of Stoner Rock aggression slowly coming through. The vocals from Alexandre C are more restrained compared to the previous track with a subtle Garage Rock sound being highly atmospheric. The doomed out guitars become more Cosmic and vibrant when the heavier instrumental sounds appear with Alexandre C’s vocals becoming more impressive with the song reaching its natural conclusion.

The final song Purple Moon is a classic style of Stoner Rock with moments of Black Sabbath and Motorhead creative energy. The song is quite simple but still a highly effective way of Gods & Punk delivering fast-paced and highly energetic sounds with a Punk Rock swagger. A great track to end the EP with and showing quite a Doom Rock edge on the later stages of the track before Gods & Punks deliver one intense blast of Classic Hard Rock guitars and swirling Psychedelic rhythms.

Mountains Of Garbage is another excellent release from Gods & Punks to add to their already impressive discography and keep their established fan base quite happy until they drop their next release.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Gods & Punks new album, Into The Dunes Of Doom - owes a huge debt of gratitude to Black Sabbath. As the band play a wild variation of Doom/Stoner riffs influenced by that legendary band. Gods & Punks play a heavy blend of Desert Rock, Psych and Stoner Rock which is held together by a classic doom/proto-metal sound. The vocals from Alexandre do sound like Ozzy at times but still stand on their own merits.

The album feels very retro in places and that's no bad thing as Gods & Punks know how to play exciting riffs and exciting lyrics to match. There are seven songs on the album and the band have written some epic tracks to poison your soul with. Standout tracks to check out are: Dunes Of Doom, Civilization, Signs Of Life, Subatomic Wormhole and The Encounter, which runs past the fourteen minute mark. The instrumental work is very good indeed with the band moving from different genres effortlessly.

There are a few psychedelic progressive parts that do drag at times but Gods & Punks return to the standout Doom/Stoner Rock sound. As it gives their sound a more refreshing and addictive edge. The album can be very loud at times and that's perhaps down to the fantastic production. This is a very clear and crisp album with the band creating a record that will appeal to all fans across the Doom, Desert Rock, Psych and Stoner Rock spectrum.

There is something for everyone to enjoy and admire. Into The Dunes Of Doom is a superb album that Gods & Punks should rightly be proud of.
