Review

Psych/Space/Stoner Rockers OREYEON return with their fourth full length album The Grotesque Within which sees the band move away slightly from their Spaced Out and Cosmic roots for a more grounded Grunge makeover. You can hear a certain Alice In Chains and Soundgarden swagger behind the fuzzy sonic passages which has served the band superbly well over the last decade or so. This is perhaps the sound that OREYEON have been building upto ever since their 2016 debut album Builders Of Cosmos. Though, OREYEON are still part of the Spaced Out sound with that delicious and trippy levels of Fuzzed Out Doom still built upon from start to finish.

The first opening batch of tracks Echoes Of Old Nightmares, Nothing But Impurities Pt 1 and Nothing But Impurities Pt 2 allows OREYEON to expertly build waves of musical passages that forges a solid union of Doom, Psych, Sludge and Stoner melodies with that sudden shift to Grunge landscapes. The interplay of Space Rock moving throughout the classic era of Doomed Out underground scene with movements of trippy soundbytes and haunting Post-Stoner soundscapes becomes ever more heavier and aggressive which OREYEON use to their full advantage.

The lead vocals from Richard Silvaggio feel like he’s experienced that life has thrown at him and still comes out winning from the other side with his expertly driven vocals that can be ice cold as hell one moment and full of uplifting passion the next. When OREYEON decide to transform into a Sludge Rock Powerhouse then they’re really COOKING and playing some of the standout sounds contained on the first half of the record. The lyrics are perfectly captured or influenced from the Nineties era when the Grunge, Sludge and Stoner Metal scenes once reigned supreme. 

The Grotesque Within is OREYEON’s most mature and grown up record to date with the band exploring new areas of music that feels fresh and highly original on tracks such as The Grotesque Within, Something Over There and the brilliant final track Dead Puppet Eyes. The lyrics do become slightly depressing at times but OREYEON inject this against a ton of first rate Post-Stoner and Heavy Psychedelic melodies which sees them reach the same dazzling heights laid down by the likes of LOWRIDER, HOWLING GIANT and KING BUFFALO have made their names with. I can easily see OREYEON being classed as the same level as those great bands with this album alone.

The instrumental work is just immense from everyone involved and you have to give credit to Pietro Virgilio (Drums), Richard Silvaggio (Bass / Vocals), Andrea Ricci (Guitar) and Matteo Signanini (Guitar) for not only expanding on their great sound but injecting a new great style of SONIC and GRUNGE transformation into the mix that is quite refreshing and brilliantly exciting to hear. 

OREYEON have once again delivered a record of real quality that stands the test of time and will no doubt perhaps be considered one of the standout Heavy Psych / Stoner Metal albums of the year.

Northern Italy's stoner rock stalwarts OREYEON return with their fourth full-length “The Grotesque Within” on Heavy Psych Sounds Records this February 13th, and unleash the fuzzed-out power of their new single and video "Echoes Of Old Nightmares" today!

"Echoes of Old Nightmares" marks a return to Oreyeon's roots, revisiting their early hardcore energy while reshaping it into a more expansive, atmospheric form. The track serves as a bridge between fuzz-fueled aggression and haunting introspection, setting the tone for the grotesque world that defines the album’s concept. It’s both a reflection on where the band came from and an invitation into a darker, surreal new chapter.

Recorded in the winter of 2025 between Outside Inside Studio in Treviso and their own home studio, their fourth full-length “The Grotesque Within” marks a raw and uncompromising chapter in Oreyeon's sound. The record weaves a dense narrative inspired by the unsettling atmosphere found in the works of Thomas Ligotti, where reality constantly threatens to unravel and horror seeps into the everyday.

"Much like Ligotti’s existential tales, "The Grotesque Within" doesn’t simply portray darkness: it observes how the absurd and the horrific have become indistinguishable from our modern reality. Each track is a confrontation with the bizarre, the dissonant, and the disturbingly familiar. This is not just an album. It’s a descent into the uncanny that already surrounds us," the band explains.

Formed in 2014 in northern Italy, Oreyeon emerged from the convergence of musicians who previously played in bands such as Woodwall, Mexican Mud and Army of Angry Youth. From the outset, the quartet showed an affinity for heavy riff-based rock, drawing on 70s hard rock foundations (notably the early days of Black Sabbath) and combining them with stoner, doom and more progressive influences.

Their debut album "Builders of Cosmos" arrived in 2016, establishing their presence in the heavy rock/stoner scene with monolithic guitars, deep bass, and melodic vocals. Heavy Psych Sounds Records Over time, Oreyeon evolved: their second album "Ode to Oblivion" (2019) marked a shift toward a more elaborate, melodic approach, still heavy, but with increased vocal harmonies and richer textures. In June 2022, they released "Equations for the Useless", their third studio album via Heavy Psych Sounds Records. The record was captured mostly live and presents a more psychedelic and progressive side while retaining the heavy riff-driven core of their sound.

In 2023, the band contributed to the split EP "Doom Sessions Vol.8" alongside Tuscany’s doom outfit Lord Elephant. Among their contributions was a cover of Slo Burn’s “Wheel Fall”, signalling Oreyeon’s willingness to pay homage to underground heavy rock lineage while injecting their own grungy/stoner touch. As of 2025, Oreyeon continue to refine their sound, heavy but evolving, carving a space in the modern heavy/stoner/psych rock spectrum. Their trajectory shows both reverence for past heavy rock traditions and a deliberate push into more textured, complex songwriting.

Review

Equations For The Useless is the new album from Italian Psych/Space/Stoner Riffsters Oreyeon (pronounced Orion) and sees the band continue their relationship with Heavy Psych Sounds. The album has a different sound from their last album Ode To Oblivion with Oreyeon playing a seedier and almost grungier style of music whilst their Desert Rock based Space/Psych Rock influences remain fully intact.

Opening song It Was Time is a FUZZIER style of Space/Psych/Stoner Rock with Oreyeon allowing themselves to feel right at home with their new slightly distorted and proggy sound. The vocals feel they're recorded in an empty or abandoned recording studio with them sounding like they were sung from a distance. However, the vocals are superb allowing Oreyeon to have that drifting feeling of "SPACE" being heard on this album. With the aggressive and fast paced grooves moving between the fine lines of Spaced Out Doom and Psych Stoner Metal and a ton of distorted FUZZ along the way.

Second song Pazuzu is named after the Demon from the Mesopotamian religion and King Of The Evil Wind Demons. Or he's that lovely family friendly Demon from Horror Classic The Exorcist. This allows Oreyeon to move from the depths of Space into a more horror themed reality. The song is obviously quite DOOM METAL with the Occult based lyrics contained on the album. However, the song still offers a few moments of Spaced Out Stoner Metal with an Occult/Doom Metal afterthought. Cool vocals add a more DEMONIC flair to this track .

Third song Equations For The Useless sees Oreyeon return to the depths of Space with a song that perhaps has a more "realistic" vision compared to the previous song. The song could have easily been included on their last two albums. The song opens with a Post-Rock score with flashes of Psych Rock and Ambient sounds. Oreyeon do take their time with perhaps a solitary extended bass guitar that does outstay its welcome with the song fully exploding into heavy life around the two minute and thirty mark. That minor complaint aside, this is still my favourite track of the album. With the vocals having a more progressive flait to them with superb melodic arrangements as well. The instrumental work is the style of music that made me a fan of this band in the first place when they were originally known as ORION. Doom based Psych Stoner Metal allows Oreyeon the opportunity to play some of the best riffs of their career to date.

The remaining three songs on the album If, Downward Spirals and The Protocol carry on the gloomy trajectory of the first three songs whilst allowing Oreyeon the opportunity to bring new Psychedelic elements into play on this track especially on Downward Spirals and The Protocol.

Perhaps the most "METAL" sounding album that Oreyeon has released to date. As the band play heavier strands of Hard Rock and Metal on this album whilst remaining true to their Psych Stoner Metal and Spaced Out roots. 

Equations For The Useless is brilliantly produced yet again. Heavy Psych Sounds are releasing this album and I expected nothing less from that great label. This album has a more dynamic and powerful sound compared to Oreyeon's previous albums. 

This allows Equations For The Useless to be Oreyeon's best album to date and one I expect to allow the band to gain a bigger following within the Doom/Stoner Metal underground.

Psych Spaced Out Stoners OREYEON Release New Song IF From Upcoming New Album "Equations For The Useless"

Formed in 2014 by members of Woodwall, Mexican Mud and Army of Angry Youth, Oreyeon made an impression within the heavy rock scene with their debut album 'Builders of Cosmos' in 2016. Their inspirations go from Black Sabbath to The Sword: with monolithic guitars, huge bass frequencies, and intricate vocals, Oreyeon know how to please every classic and stoner rock mind! 

On their sophomore album and Heavy Psych Sounds debut, Oreyeon drift away from the usual stoner rock clichés into a more elaborate and melodic style. Vocal structures and harmonizations are more complex, melodies are richer,  while the overall sound takes a heavier path. Get ready for this new batch of fuzzy bangers, to be released on June 17th 2022!

Oreyeon were originally known as ORION when they released their debut album Builders Of Cosmos a few years ago. That album as the album title suggest was a heavy mix of Space Rock, Psych Rock and Stoner Metal. The overall sound and production of the album wasn’t the best but it was still a superbly entertaining album that I still listen to from time to time.

Now the band are back and have changed their name to Oreyeon. The band are now signed to Heavy Psych Sounds (this label goes from strength to strength and is one of the best record labels in the Underground Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal scene) and Ode To Oblivion is their first album for the label. I’m pleased to say that the band and album sound amazing from start to finish. This album is a lot more focused and the songwriting has moved on leaps and bounds since their debut album.

Ode To Oblivion is a brilliantly entertaining album from start to finish and you can tell that from the opening song – T.I.O. The music is LOUD, FAST and HEAVY but with a real genuine warmth to it. It’s purely an instrumental song but shows you how the band add swirling psychedelic noises to their own blend of Psychedelic Stoner Rock/Metal.

Second song – Trudging To Vacuity – is where the band opens with a slightly gloomy atmosphere with heavy doomed out and sludgy guitars creating a deep rich sound. The clean and soulful vocals work surprisingly well with the heavy doom sounds and the music drifts further into Space/Stoner Metal territory. You can hear elements first heard on their debut album but Oreyeon play with a more well-rounded confidence on this album. The music is quite progressive and this builds upon the trippy vibes the band create here.

Third song - Ode To Oblivion – carries on the progressive psychedelic sounds heard on the previous two songs but with emphasis firmly more on melody and progression. The vocals have an almost “pop” feel to them and it offers a warm overall approach to Oreyeon’s music. If you’re a fan of Mars Red Sky and perhaps their album Stranded In Aracadia then Oreyeon have a similar feel to their music. Though with the band preferring a heavier Stoner Metal vibe on this album. This is definitely the standout song on the album as the song never outstays its nine minute plus running time.

Fourth song - Big Surprise – is another solid offering from the band with a faster style of Psychedelic Stoner Rock with the band having a few tricks up their sleeves as the song moves to its natural conclusion. With some hidden sludgy guitars played along the way.

The final two songs The Ones and Starship Pusher sees the album move up a gear in the volume department. Oreyeon have written two final songs that show off their undeniable talent to great effect. As the album moves from one different sound to the next. The mood can be quite gloomy at times especially on The Ones as the band play a more cinematic style of music compared to the other songs held on the album.

Oreyeon have delivered the goods with Ode To Oblivion and this shows why this album is a contender for album of the year. It’s that good and you owe it to yourself to check this album out now.

OREYEON Announce New Album Details and New Song Premiere Of ODE TO OBLIVION

You may just remember these awesome Italian Heavy Psychedelic Stoner Rockers OREYEON as ORION in 2016 when the band released their debut album Builders Of Cosmos.

Well almost 3 years later the guys are back with a heavy new sound and the band have changed their name to OREYEON. Details are shown below with a cool song premiere from their forthcoming new album - ODE TO OBLIVION

The Lowdown

OREYEON'S new album ODE TO OBLIVION comes after two years of experimental sessions in their little studio recording nestled between the sea and the mountains in the north west of Italy. This new full length crosses transversely all member's musical influences and takes shape leaving behind and definitely going beyond the rules that mostly describe the classical Stoner Rock genre.

Just from the first track, a strong sense of nothingness blends into a long unsettling travel through a microcosm full of colours while black shapes lead the traveller into a spiral of nihilistic lyrics, title tracks and monolithic riffs all at the same time . A pinch of the 90’s vocals' legacy gives to this full length, the gloominess that crowns a long period of rehearsals playing and jamming over all sorts of musical borders.
