Review

Sludge/Stoner Metallers Red Beard Wall return after a five year absence and I thought the band had called it quits ages ago as things have been fairly quiet from the band. However, the band are back with this two track EP called FTW which sees Aaron flying solo this time and venting his pissed off aggression at the current state of the world and perhaps with their most politically charged and pissed off release to date. FTW only contains two tracks but there’;s a mixture of pounding Sludge, Doom, Stoner, Noise and Noise Rock sounds that Red Beard Wall made their name with.

There’s a sudden influx of Hardcore passages with their trademark streetlevel “DOOM-POP” sound being kept to a minimum that’s set against harsh realistic lyrics with Aaron venting out against the world mostly within the track W.A.N.T.S. That track still has a certain TORCHE based influence towards the end of the song but most of the time Red Beard Wall plays a highly volatile mix of down-tuned Fuzz/Sludge instrumental surroundings with socially aware lyrics to make this track an extra spicy level of pure heaviness.

The remaining track FTW is pure Red Bead Wall through and through with a stripped back Psych/Punk Rock groove exploding into a wall of heavy PISSED OFF noise which takes aim at more the dreaded enemy of Artificial Intelligence which sees Aaron taking aim at the perhaps the most dangerous threat known to man at this moment in time. The stripped back production values is obviously free of any A.I/ involvement with Aaron playing a more grounded style of Noise, Punk, Psych and Stoner Metal carnage with down-tuned Sludge Metal riffs that destroys everything within sight.

FTW is quite short running under ten minutes but it’s always great to have new material from Red Beard Wall and I’m hoping there’s a longer release in the long term. As this proves that the world of Sludge/Stoner Metal need RED BEARD WALL more than ever!!!

Review

Sludge/Stoner Rockers Red Beard Wall return with their new full length album - 3 - with this being their third full length album overall. The band have left famed Italian Powerhouse Record Label Argonauta Records and signed to fellow upcoming acclaimed label - Desert Records. Red Beard Wall also has a new drummer this time round as well with Roderick Pink behind the drums. The band are still fronted by the ever-present and perhaps one of the coolest and friendliest musicians in the scene - Aaron Wall.

Aaron has built a fantastic reputation with his last couple of records and his super-friendly easy-going charm despite the heavy sludgy grooves he creates under his Red Beard Wall persona.

3 carries on the same addictive  charm as the previous Red Beard Wall albums but this one feels more personal. The album may not be as heavy as the previous records but this hasn’t stopped Red Beard Wall delivering a tour-de-force of Sludge/Stoner Metal that perfectly captures the rebellious spirit of the genre's rules but Aaron’s vocals and lyrics have a wonderful personal touch you don’t really hear much these days.

The opening two songs Tap and Move Forth show a more subdued Red Beard Wall but still carrying that “Doom-Pop” spirit you hear from bands such as Torche and Floor merged with 90s Grunge/Noise Rock stylish dynamics which give the band an extra layer of sludgy heaviness.

Aaron’s clean vocals and gruff growls are there to be heard and are perhaps one of the most consistently entertaining parts of this album. Aaron always puts his heart and soul into his music and none so more than on this record,

The heartfelt lyrics heard on songs such as Contrarian, My Brothers, Leave Be Me and Home leave you thinking of better times in today’s dark uncertain world. All of the songs on the album all have a beginning, middle and end which brings a high amount of Psychedelic Riff Heavy Moments to give your hearing a SONIC WORKOUT or even a more intense head-banging session.

The instrumental work is superb and it’s good seeing the band keep with their DIY PUNK ROCK ethics even on their 3rd album. They could have easily switched things up but you can tell this is a Red Beard Wall record through and through.

As I stated earlier in this review, this isn’t the heaviest album from Red Beard Wall but I’m happy to say it's the most complete record they’ve released to date. I admire the different Psychedelic and Noise Rock creative choices on this record and the song-writing has moved up a gear. So give this album a couple of spins before making your final verdict on this one. There’s a lot of hidden depth on this record and that’s why I appreciate this album a whole lot more.

Overall, 3 allows Red Beard Wall to try new and exciting different things which will broaden their appeal to a wider audience within the Sludge/Stoner Metal community.

Thanks to Red Beard Wall and Desert Records for the promo.

3 will be available to buy on CD/DD/Vinyl via Desert Records from July 02nd 2021.

Review

Red Beard Wall return with their new album – The Fight Needs Us All – and it’s good to see the band remaining with Argonauta Records for this release. Coming two years after their celebrated debut album, this album sees Red Beard Wall return with an even heavier sound compared to their debut album. The musical influences of Torche, Floor, High On Fire, Sleep and Mastodon can still be felt within the DNA of this album and that is no bad thing in my book.

Red Beard Wall have still created a highly original and violently angry album that offers a few wicked poppier sounds along the way.

Opening song – Come On Down – is a distorted Sludge/Fuzz driven song with excellent dual vocals showcasing the light and dark moments of the album. I don’t know if Aaron handled all vocal duties on this album or if George did as well. If Aaron did handle all vocal duties then he puts in a powerhouse performance on this song and the entire album. Though it’s the music that’s the main draw here with Red Beard Wall playing a mixture of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal sounds that will have fans of the genre nodding in agreement.

Second song – To My Queen – is a heavier and more sinister offering with a few Doom-Pop sounds that Torche and Floor are known for being added for great effect. The lo-fi sound of the album gives Red Beard Wall a more threatening presence but the music is always constantly engaging and never outstays its welcome. The vocals and lyrics once again do their job and allows the band to create another outstanding song.

Third song - Ode To Green – sees the band open with a poppier sound but you know with this being Red Beard Wall that a heavy distorted riff and Aaron’s demonic vocals are never too far away. Though it’s good to see the band staying with the Doom-Pop sound with heavy and angry outbursts of Sludge/Stoner Metal holding everything together.

Fourth song – Reverend – offers a darker alternative to the opening three songs as the mood is more reflective and gloomy. The song is quite slow-paced at first with intelligent drumming by George leading the way. The sludgy guitars from Aaron keeps everything grounded and at a subtle pace. This is a purely instrumental song and it’s good to see Red Beard Wall slow things right down and play a more laid-back song.

I’ve been told off in the past for giving too much away when reviewing albums. So with that in mind I’m going to say the second half of the album carries on the same style of music as the first half. Though the music becomes way heavier and sees Red Beard Wall creating some of the albums standout songs with songs such as: The Warning, Tell Me The Future Of Existence and The Fight Needs Us All.

If you’re new to the world of Red Beard Wall and want to hear something different to your usual Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal bands then I recommend you check this band out now. As Red Beard Wall have the potential to be you’re new favourite band.

The Fight Needs Us All is a fantastic sounding album and that’s down to the excellent production that’s been given to this album. The atmosphere is quite raw at times but that’s Red Beard Wall’s overall style and it works brilliantly well for the band. I had high hopes for The Fight Needs Us All and I’m happy to state that this album has exceeded all expectations. As this album is a contender for one of the best albums of the year.

Overall, The Fight Needs Us All is a must-have and unmissable album.

An Interview With Aaron Wall From RED BEARD WALL

US Sludge/Stoner Rockers – Red Beard Wall – made a name for themselves with their excellent S/T debut album which was released in May 2017. This album became a firm favourite of mine very quickly. As the band play a heavy distorted mix of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal sounds. Plus it’s so damn catchy as well.

The album went on to receive some acclaim within the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal community. Aaron Wall is the mean creative force behind Red Beard Wall. However he’s ably backed up by by drummer George Trujillo on the drums whenever the band perform live.

Red Beard Wall have been busy recording their upcoming second album due for release in 2019. With that mind I wanted to catch up with Aaron and see how things are going with Red Beard Wall and what we can expect from the new album.

Aaron kindly agreed to do this cool interview.

Hi Aaron. Thanks for doing this interview. How are things with you today?

Greetings Outlaws of the Sun! Thank you so much for having me! It's a true honor! Things are going tremendously well in my world! Stoked on the months ahead!

For people not in the know can you give a brief history of how the band came about and what the current line-up is today.

The abridged version goes as such… I had been out of music and bands for a few years as a side effect of a tumultuous time, that left me reeling in basically all aspects of life, including my creativity and passion for music. I'll spare you the mushy details (I met my lifesaving wife), so fast forward to late 2015 and everything had turned for me.

I got the passion back and decided to write a few songs just for me, for fun. I was honestly extremely happy with what those original 3 songs became, that I decided, fuck it, I’m gonna do a record. No expectations of putting anything out necessarily, I just had the joy of it back. I wrote, performed all instruments/vocals, recorded, and mixed the album in my living room.

I was really proud of it so I sent it out to a few labels as just a shot in the dark. Amazingly to me it drew some interest, but none more than Gero at Argonauta. As the cliche goes...the rest is history.

To answer the line-up question, my live drummer is the homie, George Trujillo who is an absolute beast. He's crucial to the Red Beard Wall live vibe. Other than that, it's a creative line-up of one. The bearded one.

You released your debut album last year. What a response that album received. Did it surprise you how many people reacted to the album? I still listen to this album all the time.

Yeah! Very very much so, it was damn near overwhelming! The support and love I received was about a gazillion times more than I ever dreamed of. Even though I poured everything I had into those songs, and I was extremely proud of the record, you just never know. This community Steve, our community, can not be praised enough.

If I could shake everyone's hand, look them in the eye sincerely, and say thank you, I most definitely would. The means more to me than I could explain. I'm just grateful for that record. It has made many of my dreams come true. Including, but not limited to, the opportunity to do it all over again. Thank you to you specifically, Mr. Howe. You've been extremely instrumental in the momentum, and success the band has. Grateful to you sir.

Looking back on your debut album, would you change anything about it?

Nothing at all! I love those songs as much now, if not more, than I ever have! Any change in the whole arc of the cycle by me, would've fucked it up more than likely! Ha! I feel like I was just a vessel. I just put the work in, stayed out of the way and let the universe do it's thing. It rewarded me tenfold.

Did you realise before your debut album was released that the album would receive that kind of response. It struck a chord with the Sludge/Stoner Metal scene. Well in my humble opinion.

I honestly didn't think about the response that much, mainly because I didn't even know what to categorize the music as. I was just really happy and proud of the songs. I will say, though, that I am so fucking happy and fortunate it found a place in the "scenes" that it did. It feels like home to me. It's where it was meant to be, and it's where I wanna be. It's the people. All the amazing bands and people within.

Now you will be releasing your new album very soon. Can you give any details what the album is called and when it’s expected to be out?

Yeah man! It's coming! It's titled "The Fight Needs Us All," and it'll be out worldwide on vinyl, CD, and all digital platforms in February 2019 on the mighty Argonauta Records. Official release date, album art, and track list will be announced next month! Teaser tracks, exclusive song art and limited merch in the weeks after. Really stoked to unveil everything, especially the jams! There are 8 brand spanking new songs on the record, and it's banger after banger.

Will it be the same sort of style of music your debut album contained? Or have you changed things round for this album. Any hidden surprises at all?

It's overall not too far of a departure from the debut. It's just MORE, and in my humble opinion, a huge step forward. Better, heavier, and catchier riffs, more mature and ear-wormish melodies. Guitar wise for sure, but vocally even more so. I experimented with vocal harmonies that came out absolutely killer! I really hope people enjoy it. I think as a whole, the album is super solid. But what the hell do I know! Ha!!

Argonauta Records are releasing this album again like your debut album. Was it an easy decision to stay with Argonauta Records?

There was no decision. It was a given. Gero took a chance on me. He did not have to. I do not take that for granted, even in the slightest. Plus I was lucky enough to be signed to Argonauta pretty early on. There definitely weren't but just a few US bands on the roster at that point in time.

I feel like we've grown and expanded together in a truly artistic and organic way. He's helped me grow and hopefully I've done at least a small part to contribute to Gero's and his labels growth. I'll continue to be loyal to Argonauta because Argonauta has been loyal and tremendous to me. It means something.

Did you have any other offers from record labels wanting to sign you to their roster?

I had a few inquiries. Labels putting out feelers. I was definitely not looking for other labels. I'm exactly where I need to be at this point in the journey.

Gero (Owner Of Argonauta Records) has had a great year releasing albums from a wide range of great artists. Did you feel under any pressure when making the second album from your other bands signed to Argonauta Records releasing cool albums? Or did you focus on your own thing.

Man did he ever, and he's still going! The dude is killing it! No other way to say it! I put more than enough pressure and work on myself, just to make it as good as I possibly can. That's really all I can do. The way I look at having so many amazing bands on our label, releasing stellar songs and albums at what seems like a dizzying pace, is just inspiration. Makes me, make sure to keep busting ass and growing.

Did you do anything differently recording the new album compared to your debut album?

To tell you the truth, not a whole lot. The only major differences were in the gear used and things in the technical recording realm. Other than that it was not a huge departure. The main difference was just the knowledge I had gained since the debut. In both performance, recording, and engineering, and how I was able to use that progression in skills to make the new record better in every single facet and phase.

Will you be touring and promoting the new album heavily?

Most definitely! Argonauta alongside ALL NOIR have a pretty extensive PR campaign leading up to release and there will be shows a plenty! Doing some dates with the impeccable Backwoods Payback at the end of November to kick things off and then we'll be out there everywhere and anywhere for a good while pushing The Fight Needs Us All into every nook and cranny that it can seep into.

Any word on European Dates?

Nothing solid yet, but I am vigorously working on it. I'm truly hoping to be over around this time 2019. You will see my face. Mark it it down..

What comes first to you? Music or Lyrics.

Music comes first when I write. I never even ponder on lyrics or vocals until the song is musically finished. When writing lyrics, I listen to the songs and let them tell me what should be said and how it should be said. I feel like it's more organic that way in a sense. I don't question and pine over things a whole lot. I trust my creativity. I just try my absolute best to stay out of the way and let it do it's thing through me. Seems to work best for me, and my soul.

What inspires you when writing music?

The riff! It's the motherfucking riff! Spectacular riffs are my air, and I need to breathe. Nothing inspires me more. Period.

Thanks for doing this interview. Before you go do you have any words of wisdom to say to your fans?

My absolute pleasure my brother! Thank you so much Steve and Outlaws of the Sun! It's an honor and privilege to grace your site. Grateful and thankful for all you do! Also quickly, a gargantuan thank you to each person, that has shown me support and encouragement, or critique for that matter. Thank you to the friends I've made so far along the way. The true brothers and sisters. The family that we are in. The family of true, real, and honest, heavy music.

You are all an integral and crucial part of my dream. No words could ever repay you for the joy you've brought and continue to bring to me. Means every damn thing! ALL LOVE. ALL GRATITUDE. ALL RESPECT. ALL HAIL!!!

P.S. Please please grab my new album The Fight Needs Us All! Feb. 2019 so I can continue to do cool shit like this!

Teaser tracks coming sooooooooon!!!

An Interview with Aaron from RED BEARD WALL

Red Beard Wall have had quite a journey in releasing their excellent debut album. Due out on Argonauta Records from May 12th 2017. Starting as a one-man project with Aaron Wall – writing, recording and performing the instruments all by himself.

Roll onto 2017 and Red Beard Wall are a hard-hitting Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal duo with George Trujillo joining Aaron on drums. Red Beard Wall are now ready to face the world with their bombastic style of Sludge/Doom/Stoner riffs with a deadly appetite for Noise Rock sounds.

I've reviewed the album here and I wanted to find out more about Red Beard Wall. As they seriously impressed me with their debut album. I'm happy to say Aaron Wall (Guitars/Vocals) has kindly agreed to this interview.

Hi Aaron. How are things with you today.

Greetings Outlaws of the Sun! Really appreciate you having me. Everything is going really well. No complaints whatsoever. It's an exiting time for us.

Can you give a brief history of how the band came about and where it is today.

I'll try to keep this a short version of a long story...

I had been out of music for 3 or 4 yrs, mainly because of life bullshit. So I was itching for a reason to get back into it. I had slowly started working on a demo in January 2016 just to appease myself really. I wrote 3 songs and I was so damn proud of them. I put the demo on BandCamp and got a great response. That got me back to being serious about it. After that man, the songs just spilled out of me and were getting better and better. In my humble opinion anyway. Ha ha.

So I decided to move forward. I set up a lil studio at my house, went on a crash course in recording, engineering, and mixing. I was a sponge, I just soaked up every bit of knowledge of could. Then I performed and recorded all the instruments and vocals Then mixed the record. Dan at Mammoth Sound handled mastering. I was just going to release it myself but I thought it was really good, so I took a shot and sent it out to 5 or 6 labels. Argonauta jumped on it. As far as where we are now...

George, the drummer in the band now heard the demo and dug the songs. As fate would have it we live 45 min apart so he offered to help me if I needed a drummer. I went and jammed with him and it just clicked. So we're now a 2 piece of destruction.

How would you describe your overall sound.

When people ask I always describe it as sludge rock. What I've heard from others is Helmet or Butthole Surfers mixed with Black Sabbath. It's interesting to hear the different things people get out of it. It's just an amalgamation of everything heavy that we like...

Which is a lot. Lol.

We are here to talk about your debut album. What can people expect from the album.

Briefly put, people can expect...

Simple and to the point songs. Massive, crushing guitar tones, and drums of thunder. Blistering screams of discontent, alongside vocals melodies that soar. And groove. Can't forget the groove.

What influenced you all when recording the album.

The main influence was to have a vessel for myself to purge the discontent I have with the world around us. Especially at this point in history. Also just to write songs that fucking jammed. Intelligent tunes that were also somewhat easy for people to wrap their heads around. Thoughtful, head bobbing music.

Will you be touring this record heavily in the United States.

That's most definitely the goal, and we're taking offers...any offer! Ha-ha!

Right now we have a bunch of dates lined up this summer all over the South-west US, and booking and trying to book more as we speak.

What is the song-writing dynamic in the band. Is it a group participation or down to one individual.

On this record specifically, I did it all. Wrote, performed, recorded and mixed the record. Now that George is in the band and our chemistry is off the charts, moving forward, the plan is collaboration.

What influences you when writing music.

It's really hard to explain. When I write or do anything musically, I basically immediately fall into a meditative (flow) state. A hyper focus I'd say, and the songs just spill out of my soul. Not to get to philosophical. Lol.

But honestly, there is never any premeditated thought or direction. It's just all of my knowledge and influences being regurgitated in, the form of sound.

Are you all involved with different musical projects or is Red Beard Wall your main band.

Red Beard Wall is what we're 100% focused on. Especially at the moment with the record coming out soon and all the shows lined up. George does play in band as well as Red Beard Wall called Bummified that's a straight doom band. Killer stuff.

What is your musical setup when performing or recording live. Is it a an advanced setup or a basic setup.

I like to plug and play. The tone that tickles my soul is Orange OR tone. I'm using an Orange OR100 and PPC412 with a octave pedal used subtlety for a little extra low end since we're a 2 piece. I'll keep adding as I go. Working towards Conan like setup. Volume!

You're from Texas which seems to have a great Doom/Stoner Metal scene thanks to bands such as Wo Fat, Mothership and Project Armageddon to name but a few. How is the local scene perceived in Texas. Is there a local scene for you to perform regularly.

The Texas scene is badass!! Those bands you mention are carrying the flag of stoner/doom high! Proud to be a part! We have a Our local scene is getting better. We're doing all we can to help it.

Do you perform many local gigs or do you have to travel further afield.

We play locally and we get out and play as well. We'll play anytime, anywhere.

Before you go, do you have anything to say to your fans.

We just wanna say thanks to everyone for the support, big and small. This is our dream so it means everything. GO GET THE RECORD MAY 12!

Well Aaron, thanks for doing this. All the best with the new album.

We can't thank Outlaws of the Sun enough for the support and opportunity. All Hail!!!
