It’s All The Same is the new EP from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal heavyweights Monolord. The EP features two new songs with Monolord bringing a more classic sounding Psychedelic Doom vibe on this EP. You still have all of the great sounding Doom/Stoner Metal goodness that Monolord are known for with a heavy FUZZ approach throughout the EP.
Opening song Glaive (It’s All The Same) sees Monolord continue their 1970’s Classic Hard Rock guitar sound which they’ve used to great effect on their last few albums. The music does remind me of Thin Lizzy in places when the heavier and aggressive guitars appear. There’s a melancholic Post-Stoner element to this track which allows Monolord to offer a song that feels quite personal to the band especially with the sublime vocals from Thomas.
Second Song The Only Road is vastly different to Glaive (It’s All The Same) with Monolord playing a heavier and doomed out sound. The track is more powerful and dynamic with a foreboding Doom Metal atmosphere being heard within the sullen guitars. This harks back to the sound that Monolord delivered on their classic debut album with a few modern Psych Rock flourishes the band have used recently. The strongest aspect of this track is the delicious and heavy levels of FUZZ that Monolord plays on the later stages of the track.
It’s All The Same is another essential release from Monolord who deserve their reputation as one of the best and most important bands within the Doom/Stoner Metal scene right now.

Review:
Infernal is the new EP from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Graveseer who bring a grungy and distorted element to their mix. The EP is very raw sounding with a Melvins based approach with the heavy lo-fi grooves. The EP is definitely part of the DIY culture with the production values and techniques used for this release. Graveseer also has a subtle sludgy shoegaze feel which comes across surprisingly well within the opening track of Heretical Thoughts.
The song has a slow-to-mid pace delivery with the vocals being quite Punk based. The Power-Trio element works superbly well for Graveseer who do bring a menacing and LOW & SLOW atmospheric sound on songs such as Apocryphal and Malevolent. The sound does become more DRONE based and gloomier as time moves on within the EP. Shades of Melvins and Mastodon and HUM can be heard within the creative choices that Graveseer makes on the more outlandish parts of the record.
Infernal is perhaps the journey of a band still trying to find their way and refine their own sound within the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal world. However, there’s a lot of great sounds that Graveseer could be onto something great within their next few releases especially on the final two songs of Dark Forest and Infernal which are the strongest parts of this EP. Graveseer plays the most interesting and heaviest parts on this EP.
There’s some killer guitar solos that deserve the listener's full attention especially when the more trippy and psychedelic parts appear. Overall, Infernal is a wickedly entertaining release that showcases the rawest sounds from the Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal underground scene.

Review:
Weapons For Killing Cattle is the debut EP from Doom/Sludge/Grind Metallers BETRAYERS and sees the band really focus upon the "GRIND" aspect to their music for an unsettling blend of music that is downright ugly and violent to hear. Luckily BETRAYERS bring a Doom/Sludge Metal aesthetic to their sound that I enjoyed the most. Though, I will admit the use of Grindcore is quite impressive on a technical level. As the band play some of the heaviest, filthiest and fastest grooves I've heard this year especially on the superb opening tracks Cut The Head Off The Snake and Knives In A Line.
As these two tracks are shorter and BETRAYERS focus mostly on playing short sharp shocks to the system where the riffs are concerned. The vocals are death based growls which I kind of understood after a few listens. There's some clever lyrics buried within the chaos that allows BETRAYERS to have a socially aware conscience in places.
From this moment on BETRAYERS play music that I was fully behind as the Doom/Sludge aspects come into play more and a thrilling Death Metal atmosphere works superbly well with the Grindcore themes of the EP. The vocals become a mixture of Clean vocals and pissed of Death Chants. The band even find the time to play slightly chaotic grooves that are considered more regular Doom/Sludge Metal fare which appears mostly on the tracks Bring Me In From The Sunlight and Darkside Of The Mountain. The sound of the EP from this moment on could be classed as more Progressive especially compared to the opening tracks of the EP.
I always feel challenged writing reviews for bands that take me out of my comfort zone and BETRAYERS did just that. I do admire Grindcore bands from a technical aspect but I haven't listened religiously to that style of music since my early to mid twenties. This was a refreshing change and I started to enjoy time more with BETRAYERS as they blend Doom/Sludge Metal sounds with the unpredictable nature of Grindcore that may perhaps limit some folks enjoyment of this EP for the more dedicated follower of EXTREME METAL.
Fifth track Anegla Landsbury vs Nicolas Cage is pure brilliance and absolute demented carnage at the same time. Opening with a line for the John Woo classic action movie FACE/OFF. The sound is bombastically grindcore with ugly vocals to match. Perhaps my favourite track on the EP.
The final two tracks of Alters and Laura Gray, returns to the Doomed Out world of the middle section of the EP with BETRAYERS playing their own take on the "LOW & SLOW" style on the early stages of Altars before returning to their natural Grindcore habitat. Laura Gray follows the same destructive path with BETRAYERS leaving no stone unturned with their sense of BRUTALITY leaving me a shivering wreck.
The production values are very LO-FI and DIY based but it's perhaps the best production techniques BETRAYERS could have used for this type of release. Weapons For Killing Cattle pulls no punches and it's a violent musical adventure from the UK underground scene.

Hope Is Heavy is the new album from South African Psych/Doom/Stoner Rockers Acid Magus and expertly delivers on the huge potential they delivered with their acclaimed debut album. This record explores a more world-weary dynamic to their overall sound with the band taking their love of Black Sabbath, SLEEP and Pink Floyd to another creative level. The sound is more dynamically powerful especially within the FUZZ aspect of their overall sound. Flashes of Prog Rock sonic wizardry works superbly throughout the album.
Vocals are quite different compared to their debut release, as they have a subtle classic approach which comes across brilliantly well within the excellent opening tracks of Demon Behemoth and Progeneration. The stripped back Grunge aspect heard on their last album is nowhere to be seen with Acid Magus going for the Doomed Out Fuzz route for their style of Stoner grooves. The sound is never too flashy and Acid Magus adds the right amount of AMPLIFIER based heaviness with swirling Psychedelic noises becoming more Space Rock based.
The first two tracks are perfect appetisers for Acid Magus to deliver a fine main course of sublime modern day riffs that show a touch of class when the classic era of Fuzz Rock and Stoner Metal combine for a record that has many outstanding twists and turns on tracks such as Caligulater and "A Planet, A Deathstar" which should impress fans of the Star Wars universe being given the Doomed Out creative treatment.
Hope Is Heavy allows Acid Magus the perfect opportunity to constantly evolve their own original style of Psychedelic Doomed based Stoner Metal. The band do add a few moments of Ambient Rock, Classic Rock and even Post-Rock to give their music a more grounded feel. The record even shows a fun experimental side when Johni Holiday of Ruff Majik fame makes an appearance within one of the album's most OTT and inventive tracks Dead Weight. A song that sees both parties play something a little bit different than they're known for. Quirky, experimental and most of all with a sense of gloomy demented FUZZED up fun. Perhaps the heaviest, trippiest and far out tracks on the album. The FUZZ is strong within Dead Weight and the Psychedelic energy offers a cool throwback to the classic heyday of 70's Heavy Psychedelic Rock with a kick-ass free-flowing and gloomy Space Rock energy that ends the track on a mighty high.
The final song Trillion Tonne Sun is the standout track on the album with Acid Magus operating with a pure "Apocalyptic" creative vision for this track. The music starts slowly with Acid Magus adding levels of Distorted and Heavy Sounds that merge into Pink Floyd and King Buffalo influenced Post-Whatever extended jams. The sound is deliciously heavy and freaky in places with Acid Magus playing a lush Desert Rock extended jam. The song slowly builds up to some mighty Prog Stoner based grooves with superb vocals to match.
The album benefits from first rate production values that allows Acid Magus delivering on the promise of perhaps being the best Psych Doom/Stoner Metal band currently from the South African underground scene. Along with Ruff Majik, Acid Magus are destined for bigger and better things within the global Doom/Stoner Metal scene and Hope Is Heavy is the main evidence to back that point up. This is a masterclass of modern day Psychedelic Stoner Metal that has seen Acid Magus release another AOTY contender.

Every song on HOWLING GIANT's sophomore album "Glass Future" tells its own story. Yet even without an overarching concept, all could exist within the same universe. Such crafty lyrical world-building is hardly surprising coming from a trio of enthusiastic fantasy and science fiction aficionados. "Glass Future" downright asks to inspire a book or graphic novel, even as it explodes with furious energy and thunderous acrobatics.
Musically, "Glass Future" offers a continuation and evolution of all the elements that made the debut album "The Space Between Worlds" (2019) such a success. HOWLING GIANT entice classic metal and hard rock to interact dynamically with spacy, prog-infused passages, desert and psychedelic metal moments, rock organs, catchy hooks, and top everything off with soaring harmonized vocals.
HOWLING GIANT hail from one of the most legendary places for music on earth: Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Despite the city's reputation for assembly-line pop country, the town called Music City is a place of deep history, where brilliant songwriters and virtuoso session players keep dozens of musical legacies burning bright. Fertile ground, then, for a preeminent fuzz-psych power trio who consciously live in the pocket of that lineage.
Following a trilogy of EPs, "Howling Giant" (2015), "Black Hole Space Wizard: Part 1" (2016), and "Black Hole Space Wizard: Part 2" (2017), HOWLING GIANT delivered their debut full-length "The Space between Worlds" in 2019, which to the delight of their rapidly growing following and critics alike more than fulfilled the promise of the early releases.
To bridge the time until their new album, the trio released the "Masamune & Muramasa" split with Sergeant Thunderhoof in 2020 and the "Alteration" EP in 2021, the first releases with bassist Sebastian Baltes, the son of German metal legends ACCEPT's former bass player Peter Baltes, fully integrated into the band as a co-writer.
