Review
Spanish Sludge/Grunge/Stoner Rockers Rosy Finch return with their new EP - Seconda Morte. An EP based on the classic poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri and where he walks through the depths of hell. So obviously an uplifting EP is upon us. Well, obviously not with Rosy Finch preaching a more gloomier style of music compared to their previous releases.
I haven’t read The Divine Comedy in over 30 years ever since my teenage years so I did some research before reviewing this EP and Rosy Finch has done a magnificent job in bringing some of the poem’s ideas and themes to their music. The EP is a gloomy and occult abstract mix of Post-Doom and Psychedelic textures with haunting slow-paced grooves that are contained in the opening song Selva Obscura.
Selva Obscure is an instrumental song that’s deliberately slow-paced with elements of gloomy Post-Rock and subtle Ambient Post-Rock sounds with a sense of danger lurking in the midst. The band’s ice cold atmospherics are fused with bleak Drone soundscapes towards the end of the song.
Second song Inferno carries on with the slow paced nature of the previous song with subtle twinges of Psych/Post-Rock changing to something more substantial before a familiar sludgy guitar tone brings the EP to a more promising style of delivery. The dual vocals come into play and Mirela’s vocals stand out amongst the shrieks, growls and clean vocals that accompany this song. A grungy atmospheric turn allows Rosy Finch to play a more progressive flavour to the EP. Twisted, distorted and down-tuned guitars brings a sense of realism and allows Rosy Finch to play some wonderfully subdued extended guitars that have an 1990’s Alt Metal and Grunge flavour to them whilst still being essentially modern.
The EP sees Rosy Finch return to their Shoegaze roots with traces of Spaced Out Heaviness that seriously levels the playing fields in the VOLUME DEPARTMENT on the last two tracks of the album with Purgatorio and Paradiso being some of the heaviest and bleakest grooves that Rosy Finch have released to date.
The EP is quite complex in both the instrumental work and musical composition that Rosy Finch have used for Seconda Morte. Mirela puts in an emotionally impressive performance on Purgatorio that has a fantastic “less is more” approach that has echoes of PJ Harvey at times.
Paradiso is the standout track here with Rosy Finch offering many different styles and themes from the Post-Rock, Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal underground scene. Quite hopeful at the start with a lovely Shoegaze delivery before the band returns to the murkier depths of Sludge/Stoner Metal with another bombastic vocal performance from Mirela. The song includes top-notch instrumental work from Óscar and Juanjo as well. The progressive and psychedelic elements of this track is what really grabbed my attention with a clever use of different styles that allows the band to play some of the best sounds and riffs I’ve heard from the band.
Seconda Morte is another excellent release from Rosy Finch who are fast becoming one of the most impressive and essential bands within the Sludge/Stoner Metal underground scene.
