Apocalyptic desert psych unit JACK HARLON & THE DEAD CROWS to release new album on Blues Funeral Recordings; first video and preorder up!

Melbourne's psychedelic fuzz rockers JACK HARLON & THE DEAD CROWS share the first single and video taken from their forthcoming third album "Hail to the Underground", to be issued on February 17th through Blues Funeral Recordings. Watch their fire-driven new video for "My Pal" right now!

As Australia began a series of flash pandemic lockdowns in early 2021, Melbourne psychedelic fuzz rock band Jack Harlon & the Dead Crows’ prolific frontman Tim Coutts-Smith began experimenting with home recording some of his favorite old songs. This rabbit-hole deep-dive eventually led him to bring the fans in on the project, with a social media post inviting suggestions of old underground songs they'd like to hear “Harlon-ified".

The result is 'Hail to the Underground,' a collection of renditions by Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows selected for their musical importance and personal meaning, with the general throughline being that none of the original artists are household names. Filtered heavily through the spaced-out psychedelia of Jack Harlon's inimitable style, this fuzz-drenched, genre-crossing love letter includes songs by under-the-radar icons like Bauhaus, God, Butthole Surfers, Joy Division, The Melvins, and more.

About the cover, guitarist and vocalist Tim Coutts-Smith comments: “The debut cover is a tribute to the Australian band GOD, who formed in 1986 and released the song 'My Pal' in 1988. The song is seen as a national treasure by a lot of alternative Aussie bands with it being covered by artists such as Magic Dirt, Violent Soho and Peabody. Our band put a call out to our fans to ask which songs they would like performed in our sound. We received an overwhelming response requesting we cover 'My Pal'. I've always loved this song, so the choice was a no-brainer. There is something so mysterious and strangely emotional about this song which, despite its simplicity, I can never fully put my finger on.”

"Hail to the Underground" will be released worldwide on February 17th, 2023 on various vinyl editions, digipack CD and digital, with preorder available now through Blues Funeral Recordings.

Formed in 2016, Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows are a psychedelic fuzz rock band from Melbourne, Australia, who incorporate elements of blues, stoner rock, folk and doom metal into their distinctive sound. Much of their music follows the character of drug-addicted outlaw Jack Harlon, with songs that spin tales of desperation and survival in a fictitious western landscape.

In 2018, the band independently released their debut album 'Hymns,' which Outlaws of the Sun called "an exciting record that actually takes genuine creative risks and a psychedelic and spaced out journey packed full of inventive ideas and heavy riffs". The album was highlighted as one of the best albums of 2018 by Doom Charts and was subsequently re-released by independent tastemaker labels Tuff Cuff Records and Copper Feast.

Their follow-up album 'The Magnetic Ridge' was released in 2021 via Psychedelic Salad Records, with Heavy Blog Is Heavy characterizing the massive LP as "enough to tickle your frontal lobe as much as it rattles your eardrums". Skipping to the renaissance year of 2023, the band is now ready to unleash the power of their third full-length with 'Hail to the Underground' on Albuquerque, NM-based independent label Blues Funeral Recordings.

Gavran - Indistinct Beacon (Album Review)

Release Date: 02nd December 2022. Record Label: Dunk!records. Formats: CD/DD/Vinyl

Indistinct Beacon: Tracklisting

Dvorac

Talas

Dim

Duhovi

Pesak

Review

Sludge/Doom/Post-Metal noisemakers Gavran impress greatly on their second album Indistinct Beacon which takes the bone-crunching grooves from Cult Of Luna and merges it with the Doom Metal vibes of early-era 40 Watt Sun for an album that's bleak and distinctively progressive from start to finish. Vocals are gloomy throughout with a mixture of clean vocals and harsh growls.

The aggressive nature of Indistinct Beacon is one of the albums main strengths with Gavran playing a more distorted and droned out style of Sludge and Post-Metal. There's elements of Neurosis and ISIS within Gavran's music with a warped Psychedelic down-tuned sound that allows Gavran to be masters of their own creative thoughts and identity which you can feel instantly from the excellent opening track Dvorac. Post-Rock vibes are placed in the middle of the song for a more calmer approach that is also quite solitary as well. Though, Gavran are a Sludge/Doom/Post-Metal band first and foremost which means the heavier and violent gloomier sounds are never far behind.

Second song Talas opens with a slightly hopeful Ambient Post-Rock solitary groove with Gavran soon exploding into a loud volcanic eruption of Post-Metal grooves with soulful Psychedelic elements working superbly well with the fantastic vocals. The vocals once again are a mixture of clean based vocals and harsher guttural growls. This allows this track to be one of the most thrilling parts of the album. The instrumental work is EPIC without being flashy with the band laying down a non-stop avalanche of impressive riffs before stepping back and playing slow-paced Post-Rock and Shoegaze sounds that drifts into the world that Pallbearer usually inhabits.

Gavran moves further into the dark vortex of Sludge/Post-Metal on tracks such as Dim, Duhovi and Pesak. The mood becomes heavier and gloomier with the band adding a more experimental drive to their music. Instrumental progressive passages merge with the bleak Psychedelic and Ambient landscapes of the album with a wonderfully harsh Shoegaze flow appearing on Duhovi and Pesak.

Indistinct Beacon is a challenging and complex record to listen to but if you're looking for a more bolder Sludge/Post-Metal album with high amounts of violent and aggressive grooves then Gavran are very hard to beat. Featuring fabulous production values with a slight DIY edge, Gavran excel themselves greatly here which allows Indistinct Beacon to be one of the most definitive Post-Metal albums of the year.

Hard Rock/Heavy Rock Unit MASHEENA Premiere New Song 1979

MASHEENA - from Bergen, Norway

The history of MASHEENA dates back to the early 2000s, when Luis, Tarjei and Ole agreed to start a Thin Lizzy coverband after more than a few beers one night. That band never materialized, but the guys kept active over the years in other projects like ABBATH, Royal ROOSTER, LOST AT LAST, MEELODI, ODISEA 4TET and ST SATAN.

After reigniting a smoldering fire, mellowed by time and sober expectations after spending half a lifetime in rehearsal rooms, and against better judgment, in 2021 Luis sent a few demos to Tarjei who literally had to dig out his bass from the basement after having sworn to never play inan original band again.

The legend ARMAGEDDA, known from IMMORTAL’s debut album, the ABBATH-fronted “I” and DEMONAZ’s solo album joined together with string virtuoso Ole rehearsing the songs in a barn in the outskirts of town transformed into a rehearsal cave.

Rather than re-inventing music itself, the purpose of MASHEENA is to share the joy and love of hard rock. The intended EP with songs from the demos quickly grew to a full album.

In case you are worried about being misled and fooled, do not worry, the references to heavy rock and a wide span from 70s to 00s are obvious. Musically, Masheena are inspired by both the sunny and shady grooves of the 70s, the shameless hedonism of 80s hard rock and heavy metal, as well as the jagged riffs and darker vibes of the 90s alternative rock and metal scenes.

Lean back, grease up, beer in, put on or take off your denim, leather or plant-based garments and cheap sunglasses:

With about 100 years of combined experience playing national and international venues…and ringing tinnitus, say welcome to MASHEENA!

Review

Instrumental Stoner Rockers Godzilla In The Kitchen return with their new album EXODUS that expands their winning Psych Stoner Rock sounds. The album is quite funky and jazzy in places but still one of Instrumental Desert/Stoner Rock quality which shows the band taking a different path compared to their earlier releases. The music moves at a thrilling pace with the band becoming more DOOM based on the earlier stages of the album throughout songs such as Is, The Future Of Mankind, Forced By and The King Of Monsters.

The music drifts from Chilled Out Post-Rock/Desert Rock to a heavier and progressive sounding Psych Stoner Rock drive that the band use to great effect. The instrumental work is fast-paced and equally addictive with the DIY sounding vibes of the album allowing Godzilla In The Kitchen playing strands of low-key Prog Rock compared to other bands within the Instrumental Stoner Rock scene.

Perhaps too jazzy and experimental for some, there's still a wide array of different STONER sounds with the excellent instrumental work that is equally powerful especially within the rhythm section of the band that impressed me the most.

EXODUS works best when the band focuses upon the heavier grooves compared to the lighter parts of the album. However, there's still a lot of magic to be discovered here with Godzilla In The Kitchen playing to the more low-key WEEDIAN sounds and flavours they've created and played on the album.

The second half of the album is equally as strong as the first half with tracks such as Because, Everything That Has Been Given and Will Be Taken Away offering a more climactic sound and progressive feel. The extended Psych Stoner Rock jams have a more direct sound that reminds me of early era Karma To Burn but with a more twisted flavour.

Overall, EXODUS is a deeper and forward thinking album compared to Godzilla In The Kitchen's earlier works and shows a band taking more creative and meaningful risks with their music. If you're looking for a more daring Desert/Stoner Rock sound with menacing purpose to it all then this is the album for you.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Journey To The Pink Planet: Tracklisting

Review

Psych Stoner Rockers Aktopasa new album Journey To The Pink Planet is an interesting collection of different sounds that fuses elements of Prog Rock, Psych Rock, Stoner Rock and Post-Rock for a wickedly entertaining album that will keep the listener on thier toes. Beautifully constructed with the Ambient Post-Rock sound and the heavier Progressive Stoner Rock grooves. The album does feel like a cinematic journey when the band move across the Post-It's  Desert Rock and Stoner Rock spectrum.

Aktopasa feel inspired by bands such as Russian Circles, Pink Floyd, KYUSS and Colour Haze with the trippier and progressive Desert/Stoner Rock vibe of the album being one of the strongest elements here. The album does take time to fully get going but once you understand the creative rules and themes the band use for this album, you will have a blast with the different hazy styles of Instrumental Rock the band primarily use for the record. There are vocals but these only appear sporadically on the record and not until the excellent fourth track It's Not The Reason.

The first three tracks Alif, Calima and Lunar Eclipse drift into Pink Floyd sounding Psychedelics before the band add traces of Post-Rock sounding free-flowing Progressive riff wizardy which is soothing and where Aktopasa are the most focused. Though, the album becomes wilder and more exciting when the band enter the realms of Psych Rock, Desert Rock and Stoner Rock for a heavier progressive sound.

The album does feel it has a spiritual and personal energy for the band members. As it's quite an emotionally charged album.Journey To The Pink Planet is full of excellent sounding extended Psychedelic Jams which includes a hint of Middle Eastern mysticism on the later stages of the album especially on Agarthi and Sirdarja.

The majority of the songs last between seven minutes and eleven minute in length that allows the band plenty time to explore many different themes and sounds within the world of Post-Rock and Stoner Rock. Truth, be told I didn't know what to expect for Journey To The Pink Planet and I was expecting a standard Post-Rock/Post-Stoner album with not much to say. However, I was wrong with that assumption. As this album is a thrilling and vivid musical adventure into the more daring side of Post-Rock/Stoner Rock. The progressive themes are wonderfully on point which allows Aktopasa to create their own definitive style of music.

Journey To The Pink Planet is aided by first rate production values that allows the band to play peaceful uplifting sounds as well as heavier aggressive grooves when the mood calls for it.

All in all, Journey To The Pink Planet is a sublime album to own and fully explore which shows a different side to the Post-Rock/Stoner Rock scene. Aktopasa are an exciting band to check out in their own right and with Italian Powerhouse label Argonauta Records releasing this album, I expect these guys to become more well known within the underground scene because of this album and Argonauta Records backing them all the way.

ACID THRONE - The Demo (EP Review)

Date Released: April 16th 2022. Record Label: Self Released. Formats: Cassette/DD

The Demo: Tracklisting

1.Confess Your Sins 06:55

2.Forgotten Realms 06:16

3.Altars 05:32

Review

I missed this EP from UK Doom/Stoner Rockers ACID THRONE when it was released back in April 2022. The band have just taken the Introduce Yourselves feature challenge which you can read here and I was intrigued to check out their recent release and I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard with The Demo.

This is a nineteen minute ride into the darker and fuzzier side of Doom/Stoner Metal. The EP isn’t the best produced but for a debut release it’s quite decent with the band playing a straightforward style of modern day Doom/Stoner Metal with more aggressive vocals. I can hear influences from Black Sabbath, Faith No More and bands from the NOLA scene. There’s some twinges of Groove Metal which you can hear in the superb opening song Confess Your Sins.

The song merges fast-paced WEEDIAN grooves with a sublime Psychedelic Rock afterthought towards the later stages of the song. An excellent quieter Ambient and Sonic journey that drifts between Post-Doom and Psych Stoner vibes.

ACID THRONE continues this way of creative thinking on the remaining two tracks on the EP with Forgotten Realms being the standout track here. Though, Altars isn’t too far behind either.

I wish I had checked out this band when it came out originally but better late than never. If you’re looking for a great band from the UK Doom/Stoner Metal underground scene that has a lot of VICIOUS BITE and PSYCHEDELIC ENERGY then ACID THRONE is the band for you.

The band are currently working on their full length album hopefully to be released next year and I’m for one excited to hear what ACID THRONE has in store for us.

Introduce Yourselves: ACID THRONE

What is the name of your band?

We are Acid Throne.

What is the genre of music that you play?

A lot of people have difficulty pin-pointing our sound - somewhere between stoner, doom & metal - but I guess the main reason for that is that none of us come from a traditional heavy metal background. All four of us spent many years playing in punk rock & hardcore bands, & those are two genres that have orbited the wider heavy metal scene for decades. We all grew up in small towns with small music scenes, so it was normal to go to shows where you'd see a punk band supporting a black metal band, & the exposure to such a broad range of guitar music at an early age definitely rubbed off on our song-writing influences. It's fair to say that we take inspiration from the whole spectrum of rock & metal.

Can you give a brief history of the band of how it came together and where it is today?

We actually started out as a hardcore punk band in the year or so before the pandemic happened. We struggled for a long time to find a lineup & a sound we liked, & eventually decided to change direction entirely. Our vocalist/guitarist had a few riffs in his back pocket so we hit the rehearsal room with them & never looked back!

What can people expect from your music?

Our music sounds like monster trucks colliding, with Charles Manson & Anton Lavey at the wheel. Expect to have your ear drums pummelled by loud, heavy, occult-themed doom. If you like to bang your head, you’ll dig our shit.

What is the best release that folks should check out from your band?

We have a three-track demo that's available on all good streaming platforms right now, but we're busy writing our first full-length with a view to putting that out in the middle of 2023.

Boisterous psych-prog act GONDHAWA to deliver peppy new video today; new EP "Mäanthagorī" out now via Stolen Body Records

Boisterous psych-prog act GONDHAWA to deliver peppy new video today; new EP "Mäanthagorī" out now via Stolen Body Records

Photo Matthias Eyer.

Amazing ethnic and futuristic psych-prog trio GONDHAWA open the doors to their boundless imagination by sharing their wacky and endearing new video. The footage reveals the two tracks of their new EP "Mäanthagorī" - out today through Stolen Body Records. Embark now on a journey to the planet Gondhawa, heading to "Go ! Go! Sinay" and "Toko Mieko"!

French psych-prog three-piece GONDHAWA are an eclectic sonic tumult that ignore geographical and genre limitations. Their imagination ends where the impossible begins! Straddling the line between psychedelic and progressive rock, they write songs in their very own language: Gondhawii. Lulled by science-fiction literature, Gondhawa's luminous and high-spirited universe rubs shoulders with afrobeat, oriental rhythms and the rock'n'roll frenzy. They unveil their new EP 'Mäanthagorī' in full thanks to an off-the-wall astounding new video directed by Matthias Eyer.

GONDHAWA's new EP 'Mäanthagorī' is a successful synthesis of revisited folk music and space rock. Hypnotic loops a la Moon Duo tickle with exuberant and futuristic ethnic elements. The two-track EP was recorded and mixed by Elliot & Stew at La Cuve studio (Angers, France) and mastered by Thibault Chaumont of Deviant Lab. Artwork by Léo Zedinn. The EP is coming out today.

Artwork by Leo Zedinn

GONDHAWA were born in 2018, following the musical wanderings of their three members who met a year before. Evolving in a garage rock direction until then, the three musicians from Angers, France, decided to break out of the mould and set off on a hallucinatory journey inspired by science fiction literature. From psychedelia to oriental music, passing through afrobeat and progressive rock, Gondhawa draw inspiration from all over the World. All of this converge towards an eclectic and singular musical universe, with lyrics written in their very own language : Gondhawii.

On stage, the power trio takes on a whole new dimension by introducing traditional Chinese instruments (sanxian), Malian instruments (n'goni) or a micro-tonal guitar, always seeking to expand their sound spectrum. Their performances are peppered with improvisations, immersing the audience into unique journeys around this rich blend of influences.

Gondhawa's debut album 'Käampâla' was released on October 2021 on Bristol-based record label Stolen Body (Yo No Se, Slift, Karkara, Bad Pelican). Through the micro-tonal groove of "Raba Dishka", the afrobeat stoner power of "Käampâla", or the softness of "Djoliko" - a beautiful ballad lulled by the melancholy of acoustic strings from all around the World - Gondhawa deliver the soundtrack of an interstellar road-movie. Six tracks of electric tornado with a bunch of rhythms and textures.
Gondhawa's new EP 'Mäanthagorī' arrives on November 25th 2022 through Stolen Body Records.

Review

UK Doom/Stoner Metallers Godless Suns self-titled debut album is a stirring mix of Progressive Metal, Stoner Metal, Blues Rock and Doom Metal. Full of heavy FUZZED out grooves which remind me of Black Sabbath, Pallbearer, early-era ALUNAH and High Fighter in places especially with the melodic vocals from Sarah Humphries but Godless Suns move into many other areas of Doom/Stoner Metal underground with this release.

The music has an experimental nature without being actually experimental which you can feel on the excellent opening track One Spark Of Lillith. The song has a gloomy style of Doom/Stoner Rock with it's cautiously slow Doom/Fuzz grooves with the WEEDIAN atmospherics merging into more Shoegaze territory with a Post-Rock flow to the actual song. Extended guitar jams with intricate drumming lead the way towards the end of the song.

Second song Death Of The Wise carries on the opening song's style of music but with a faster and Blues Rock approach. Soulful vocals from Sarah have genuine warmth even when set against the heavier Fuzz/Stoner Rock sounds the rest of the band play within the track. There's a jagged approach to this track with the excellent DIY production values allowing the band plenty of opportunities to impress with their style of Classic Hard Rock and Modern day Doom/Stoner grooves.

Third song Fury is the standout track for me. As the band brings a more Psychedelic and Spaced Out sound to the album which do take time to fully form and appear on the album. The song is the gloomiest and emotionally charged track on the album but there's still fun to be had with this song when the heavier riffs appear.

The second half of the album may not be as strong as the first half but Godless Suns still impress with their excellent creative choices with the many different styles of music they use on songs such as Purgation, Bones and Godless Suns. Strands of melodic Doom and Stoner Metal are played at their own pace with other elements of Psych Rock with Sarah's fantastic vocals shining through yet again.

Even with this album having a DIY feel to it all, this is still a superbly produced album that allows Godless Suns to finish the album in highly confident fashion. There's a superb Shoegaze element to Godless Suns that allows the band to play some of the most interesting and intense sounds on the album.

Give yourself a chance with this album and you will be mightily impressed like I was. This is a sublime release that should allow Godless Suns make themselves more known within the Doom/Stoner Metal underground scene.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
