D.A. Johansson - Everything

Review

Axiom is the latest release from Ambient/Doom/Drone Metal project Oscillotron which is the creative project from D.A. Johansson, who is also the main creative force behind the mighty Sludge Metal powerhouse known as KONGH. Oscillotron is a completely different beast to KONGH where the music is delivered through slowly played Distorted elements of Ambient, Doom, Drone, Psych and Industrial sounds.

The record is quite mechanical and ice-cold with a wide arrangement of different sounds and gloomy textures being played against an electronic based environment. Oscillotron is quite cinematic and heavily soundtrack driven which you can appreciate throughout tracks such as Prime Neuron Disintegration and Nullification Sequence.

The cautious and highly methodical sounds become quite spaced out when the music becomes more Ambient determined. The early stages of Axiom reminds me of films made by John Carpenter and James Cameron with the gloomy synths and electronic elements providing a cautionary style of delivery.

Axiom does feel heavily inspired by classic films of the early Eighties which I may be looking far too much into. Oscillotron is a surreal experience but once that’s quite grounded with that slow paced narrative adding that fractured Drone / Doom aspect that feels inspired by the likes of SUNN 0))), NIN and Author & Punisher but with that massive Electronic and Industrial theme bringing a sense of highly original mystery to the party.

The album lasts for around an hour with each track offering a different style of Eighties based paranoia into the mix. Oscillotron even starts to develop some excellent “video game” narratives into the record which fully sells that soundtrack narrative I mentioned earlier. It’s great to hear David bring some intense slabs of heavy distorted doom into the mix which gives the album a whole destructive energy with vicious electronic beats becoming quite central to how the album fully plays out.

The Progressive Musical environment is wonderfully subversive with David showcasing a wealth of different Electronic and Ambient Metal styles on tracks such as Autogenic Kernel, Colossal Suspended Tensor Nexus and Archaic Cognitive Unit. Axiom is quite forward thinking and superbly dystopian which is quite hard to pull off especially for an instrumental album such as this. However, Oscillotron prove they have a great creative insight by blending different areas of Ambient and Electronic based music that tells a truly captivating story.

Axiom is an absolute masterclass of Ambient Doom Metal and Instrumental Music. Everything is played amazingly throughout and I wanted to hear more when everything was said and done. It’s also quite cool that David has included the 2024 Demo Bonus track of Miasma which is where the idea for this album originally started from.

If you’re up for a challenging and highly experimental style of instrumental music then you’re going to have your mind blown with Axiom.

Guglielmo Allegro - Everything

Review

Guglielmo Allegro aka Nightscape returns with The Great Beyond which is a more Droned Out affair compared to the last album Sakura with this record having a heavier and aggressive approach as well. There are similarities between The Great Beyond and Sakura though Nightscape relies heavily more on Psychedelic textures and Ambient sound effects with the music having a Post-Metal identity throughout the album.

The songs are quite long and very intense when Guglielmo applies massive amounts of Distorted Drone against a backdrop of fuzz, reverb and amplified textures which you can violently experience throughout the albums opening tracks of Tired Morning and Trembling Paradox. There’s a sense of isolation and detachment that I experienced with this album which  I never experienced with previous Nightscape records. I appreciate the creative energy and focus that Nightscape needed for this album but there are some great uplifting moments when the music shifts to a cerebral style of Ambient Rock, Cinematic Rock and Post-Rock.

However, the most exciting parts of the album is when Nightscape solely focuses upon creating and delivering those sudden bursts of Drone/Doom Metal exploration where the mood becomes bleak and aggressively violent which left me wanting to hear more. The majority of the tracks run near for around seven or eight minutes in length and if you’re accustomed to the works of SUNN 0))), BORIS, Bongripper and EARTH then you know what to expect but this is perhaps more riff-driven.

Standout tracks for me include: Tired Morning, Floating Mind, Freedom Of Knowledge and Polluted Crisis. These are the tracks I found myself most emotionally engaged with. The level of Psychedelic and Droned Out passages is quite euphoric despite the sense of isolation that I mentioned earlier in my review. Another great aspect of the album is the actual journey that Guglielmo takes you upon which he does on every Nightscape album but he manages to offer a different journey for each album.

The journey may be slow and highly methodical but you can’t deny the huge talent and creative vision that’s behind The Great Beyond with Guglielmo once again showing why he’s one of the best “solo” instrumental artists the scene currently has right now.

This is another masterful release from Nightscape and perhaps my favourite album yet from this creative project.

The Grey Men - Resentment (Album Review)

Release Date: September 21st 2026. Record Label: Woven Eye Propaganda. Format: CD/DD

Resentment - Tracklist

1.Resentment 05:12

2.Resentment, Part 2 02:35

3.Spite 06:07

4.Ruin 04:30

5.Useful 07:02

6.Coherence 02:27

7.Spite (noise) 06:06

Review

Resentment is the fifth album from Drone/Doom/Noise Rock collective The Grey Men who follow a similar style of music by the likes of EARTH, SUNN 0))) and NADJA. The album is not a straight-forward record with The Grey Men constructing an abstract narrative and sandbox to create, develop and play their music. There’s harsh atmospherics with some unsettling industrial and electrical themes being used throughout as some parts of the album remind me of Aphex Twin in places.

The Grey Men at least play some “standard” musical notes on this record but they’re mostly played slowly and sometimes annoyingly they feel heavily out of place. However, this is still a fascinating and highly engaging listen with the songs all having a different tone, structure and musical delivery to each other. When the music does become more fascinated with Doom Metal and Drone Metal sounds, then there is a sense of haunting Industrial Metal themes dictating how the music grows into something more familiar whilst keeping that highly experimental sound.

The record works best when The Grey Men merge their experimental themes with a standard “riff-centric” message with the music still being Drone/Doom Metal obsessed. The intricate Post-Rock, Ambient Metal and Psych Metal soundscapes allow the violent vocals to remain cautiously lurking violently in the background. The album does have an eclectic soundtrack quality to it with gloomy synths and underused industrial themes transforming into a different style of extreme music.

The two main weapons of choice for The Grey Men to deliver their music is VOLUME and DISTORTION which they apply throughout this album. Some parts of the album do feel like SUNN 0))) performing with WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM which you’ll fully appreciate on tracks such as Resentment Part Two and Spite.

The Grey Men are wonderfully creative and brilliantly subversive with Resentment which perhaps leaves you more confused than entertained. However, this album is perhaps suited for long-time followers of Experimental Music with songs that don’t have a beginning, middle or end. I applaud The Grey Men for going down this route as the music is unbelievably harsh and superbly violent when you least expect this but one that also offers some blissful movements of distorted Post-Rock and Post-Metal.

Resentment is a great record and is a record that has real “CULT APPEAL” which always goes down a storm with the underground Doom/Drone Metal scene, If you’re in the mood for endless feedback loops, sonic distortion and amplified warfare being played when you least expect it then Resentment could actually be an exciting and thrilling prospect for folks to fully check out.

Review

Deathdrone is the debut album from Death/Doom/Drone Metallers Burial Site where the name gives you a huge clue on what to expect for the album. As the band explore the lo-fi surroundings of the Death/Drone landscape with some brooding Doom Metal landscapes being added for gloomy effect. This isn’t the best produced record but it gives Burial Site some real brutal distorted heaviness into their music.

The album is over sixty two minutes long spread across four tracks with the final Burial Site being over forty two minutes in length. There’s a warped psychological appeal that’s heard within the band’s music and with how lead vocalist Null’s harsh growls are delivered. The use of LOW & SLOW and DISTORTED grooves can be pitch black and ambient heavy within tracks The Will To Death and Doomsday Clock channeling the most violent aspects of SUNN 0))), EARTH and KHANATE.

Burial Site experiment with Black Metal, Noise Metal and stripped down Sludge Metal for a sound that’s always viciously heavy. This album isn’t going to be for everyone and there are parts that I continue to struggle with as the experimental NOISE METAL aspects are even too deafening for me to listen to but it’s superbly played. The whole album feels like it was recorded in the PITS OF HELL with the band playing their brutal style of DRONE METAL to the closing seconds. The long drawn out instrumental passages are given multiple creative makeovers which allows Burial Site to keep the listener on the edge of their seat especially through the mammoth forty two minutes final track.

The excellent third track Shadows Etched In Stone does allow Burial Site to play a cool sounding Post-Rock and Semi-Acoustic track that has a deeply satisfying emotional centre to it all.

The final track does have faster grooves and frenzied Black Metal attacks with subtle shades of Psychedelic Terror moving the album into some highly unexpected areas of music. If you’re a fan of MERZBOW and MIZMOR then this track will feel like PARADISE to you all. I appreciated the technical and creative approach that Burial Site bring to this track alone.

I’m happy to admit that even though I found this album very hard to listen to at times, I still had a very good experience with the album that actually put me into some highly unexpected moments of terror along the way.

Deathdrone is a must have record for dedicated fans of the Extreme Metal Scene if you’re feeling brave enough that is!!!!

Review

You’re Not Yourself Lately is the debut album from Ambient/Post-Metal collective Rapidly Aging who brings a dense and progressive style to the Post-Metal world as Shalor Howell (the creative mastermind behind the project) explores a slow style of music that allows other areas of Post-Rock. Shoegaze and Sludge Metal to fully form. Rapidly Aging takes their time in building highly melodic Post-Rock structures that are firm and hold steady one moment before a towering force of Atmospheric Sludge destroys everything for a heavier style of ritualistic passage to form.

You can hear influences from the likes of Pelican, Neurosis, OM, Pink Floyd, Earth and Russian Circles which shows you the type of musical surroundings that Rapidly Aging aims for. The whole thing does take time to fully get moving along but it’s a deeply reflective journey that allows the Ambient and Post-Rock sounds to appear within the haunting opening tracks of Distant Sirens Wailing and Fleeting Moment. I would consider these tracks the most straightforward songs on the whole album as Shalor Howell moves along into some unexpected themes of music for the stunning third track The Negative Thought Loops.

The Negative Thought Loops combines Post-Metal aesthetics with a gloomy Americana, Gothic and Southern Folk sound which is held together by a commanding Post-Metal presence. The instrumental passages are heavy for the most part but Rapidly Aging then aims for a subtle Alt Rock and Experimental based flow. The whole thing tries to strive for pure Post-Metal heaviness but settles for a great style of Post-Rock and Post-Doom aggression. Parts Neurosis and Pink Floyd combine for a sound that’s perhaps one of the most reflective moments on the whole album.

Fourth track Awoken From A Bad Dream To An Even Worse Reality never shies away from playing a monumental style of precise progressive melodies that have a certain Pelican (Australasia) vibe to them. The free-flowing “cinematic” journey of the track brings a low-key Psych Metal aspect into the mix. The song is equally spaced out and fuelled by tranquil Post-Rock themes that feel cautiously optimistic but quite content to remain in the darkness at the same time.

The level of music experimentation is excellent with some deft classical rock and jazzy scores starting to make themselves known on the second half of the album. All of the vocal samples that provide the main storyline for the album are taken from the classic 1974 French film “The Man Who Sleeps” with this album acting as the unofficial soundtrack. I haven’t seen the film but the samples used are magnificent where they are matched up to the music amazingly well especially within the Ambient sections of the whole record.

The final three tracks of the album allows Rapidly Aging to fully explore the heaviest and progressive moments on the album whilst keeping to a slight Orchestral delivery mostly on How Quickly The Ground Falls Out Beneath You and To Keep From. There’s a determined energy to how the music is delivered with intense Progressive musical beats becoming thicker and denser that allows the album to reach it’s emotionally charged conclusion.

You’re Not Yourself Lately is not an easy album to listen to but it’s the overall journey that Rapidly Aging takes you upon that’s the real highlight. For an instrumental record, Rapidly Aging have crafted a dark and mysterious record that offers no easy answers but you can’y deny how brilliantly powerful the record is when everything is said and done….

Post-Rock/Post-Metal Collective Our Ceasing Voice Unveil New Single And Video “Wherever You Are”

A deeply personal song about loss, forgiveness and keeping a memory alive

Austrian post rock and post metal quartet Our Ceasing Voice return with “Wherever You Are”, the third single taken from their forthcoming album “The Origin of Everything”, due for release on October 2nd, 2026 via Argonauta Records.

Watch the official video for “Wherever You Are”:

Following the previously released singles “Diamond Eyes” and “The Man You Wanted Me To Be”, “Wherever You Are” reveals perhaps the most intimate side of Our Ceasing Voice. Written in the aftermath of a devastating personal loss, the song is a meditation on grief, guilt and the difficult path towards forgiveness.

Vocalist Dominik Dörfler explains:

“When I was faced with the loss of an especially close friend in 2005, something inside me broke and has still not healed to this day, leaving a huge void.”

For years, Dörfler carried the feeling that he could somehow have prevented his friend's death, a thought that became increasingly difficult to escape.

“This feeling haunted me for so many years and prevented me, in every way, from coming to terms with it.”

Fourteen years after the loss, in 2019, Dörfler finally sat down at the piano and wrote “Wherever You Are”. The song remained untouched for a long time, neither played nor listened to, before the band eventually returned to it while working on “The Origin of Everything”.

Reworking the composition and revisiting its lyrics ultimately became part of a deeply personal process of healing.

“Working on it really helped me cope with this loss, see it in a different light, replace that feeling of anger with a kind of forgiveness toward myself, and immortalize the memory of a beautiful person.”

That sense of emotional transformation lies at the heart of “The Origin of Everything”. While the album looks inward at identity, belonging, memory and the forces that shape who we become, “Wherever You Are” confronts the past directly, turning grief into remembrance and regret into acceptance.

Musically, the song showcases the band's ability to move between fragile intimacy and expansive post rock intensity, creating a space where melancholy and catharsis coexist. It is another glimpse into an album that sees Our Ceasing Voice pushing beyond their earlier sound while preserving the emotional depth that has defined them since their formation in Innsbruck in 2006.

“The Origin of Everything” will be released on October 2nd, 2026 via Argonauta Records and features eleven songs that trace different paths through memory, identity, longing and transformation.

Review

Doom/Sludge Metallers Veilcaste return with their new album Hellward and allows the band to be closer aligned to the likes of Mastodon, High On Fire, Neurosis, YOB, Monolord and Motorhead. These are bands that allow the band to solidify their intense style of Progressive Sludge Metal which has the great style of Psych, Doom, Ambient Metal and Stoner Metal compounds for perhaps their most aggressive and catchiest album yet.

Hellward allows Velicaste to offer a heavier style of SONIC fuelled melodies with a sprinkling of Thrash Metal madness within the first half of the record on tracks such as Hellward, Chains and Altar Of Ecstasy. The vocals from Dustin Mendel and John Rau have a great contrast to each other especially when the chanting based vocals appear. This gives Veilcaste a slight Space Rock edge with the rest of the band instantly becoming Spaced Out Riff Wizards but with an intense gloomy delivery that’s played throughout your speakers.

The lyrics are quite aggressive and have that classic HIGH ON FIRE and MASTODON energy to them with a real grounded sense to them. The use of LOW & SLOW mechanics is another great aspect that Veilcaste have been using more and more on their last few releases. This elevates their Psych Metal aspect of their sound to a heavier level of ambient awareness as Veilcaste’s music becomes more Post-Doom and Spaced Out obsessive right up to the very end.

Hellward once again undergoes a minor creative shift with a harsh Post-Metallic within the excellent standout tracks of Altar Of Ecstasy and Vore with intricate Sludge Metal rhythms being quite direct though it’s the brutality of the lyrics that make the real impression. Veilcaste pull no punches with their lyrics as you feel you’re getting knocked out by those alone and I loved when the band ventured into Post-Rock surroundings but still maintaining their Heavy Metal composure.

The second half of the album has a frenzied Post-Metal atmosphere with a real end of the world quality as Veilcaste offer a bleaker narrative with faster grooves and violent fuzzier sonic melodies with hidden distorted guitars being demonstrated on tracks: Anchored and Hellward.

The record does become quite fantastical but it works to Veilcaste’s advantage as they bring a real classic Science Fiction and Horror aspect to the record which makes the album really standout. The duelling vocals from Duston and John feel like they’re completely battling each other for complete control on where the album is meant to go. This is thrilling and violently loud spectacle to experience with Velicaste unexpectedly adding layers of Drone and Distortion to their sound which gives Hellward quite an unpredictable quality.

Credit must also got to the other band members of Veilcaste (Chris Cruz - Drums, T Garrett O’Sha - Guitar and Gabe Whitcomb - Bass) as they also play their part in creating an absolute masterclass of modern day Doom/Sludge Metal that has a classic Post-Metal attitude bringing massive waves of destructive grooves to annihilate everything in Veilcaste’s wake.

Hellward is perhaps the album that finally allows Veilcaste to get noticed outside the confinements of the underground Heavy Metal scene and propel them onto greater things. The guys deserve this as they have delivered with their best record to date which leaves you wholly satisfied even if you are left emotionally drained and a shivering wreck when listening to this amazing album.

Exclusive Song & Video Premiere Of Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers VEILCASTE Stunning Track CHAINS From Upcoming New Album

Forged in Indianapolis, Indiana, Veilcaste has spent the better part of fifteen years crafting music that is as //emotionally weighty as it is sonically crushing. Emerging from the band's earlier incarnation as Conjurer, Veilcaste represents both an evolution in identity and a continued commitment to writing immersive, riff-driven doom and sludge that resonates long after the final note fades.

Drawing from the bleak atmosphere of traditional doom, the raw power of sludge metal, and the expansive dynamics of post-metal, Veilcaste creates songs that balance massive, earth-shaking riffs with moments of haunting melody and introspection. Their music explores themes of personal struggle, perseverance, loss, and the complexities of the human experience, delivering a sound that is both punishing and deeply reflective.

The band's previous full-length, Precipice, showcased their ability to weave towering heaviness with thoughtful songwriting, earning praise throughout the underground doom community and further establishing them as one of the Midwest's standout heavy acts.

Now entering a new chapter, Veilcaste has partnered with Louisville, Kentucky-based Third House Communications to support the release of their upcoming album, Hellward. The collaboration marks the band's most ambitious campaign to date as they continue expanding their reach while remaining true to the uncompromising sound that has defined them since their inception.

Whether commanding a stage with their thunderous live performance or constructing dense, emotionally charged studio recordings, Veilcaste continues to push forward with unwavering authenticity, proving that the heaviest music can also be among the most human.

Veilcaste Also announced a couple of shows for the release around the first weekend of September.

9/4/26 Indianapolis, In at Black Circle with Lexington based Crop, Cincinnati based Lordship and Indianapolis based Thorr-Axe

Review

Instrumental Doom/Post-Metal collective Observers return with their second album The Emerald which continues the great work laid down on their acclaimed debut album The Age Of The Machine Entities. The record is an effortless blend of Doom, Post-Metal, Heavy Metal, Prog Metal, Ambient Metal and Stoner Metal for a journey that has complex cinematic quality throughout. Observers channel “Video Game” narrative for this record but allow the true Heavy Metal dynamics to do their thing with surreal moments of intense Post-Metal quality.

The whole sound aligns more closely to a grounded level compared to the COSMIC surroundings of their debut album. The music is more frantic and action packed with Observers delving into a frenzied style Prog Metal with an intense Heavy Metal presence emerging from the stunning opening tracks of The Emerald, The Eye Tree and Forest Of Doom. Sometimes the mood can be too flashy but it works for the overall story of the album.

The instrumental work is dominated by a great “DOOM & GLOOM” atmosphere with flashes of Ambient Metal allowing Observers to bring in other areas of the ROCK/METAL spectrum. Adding small pockets of Folk Rock and Post-Rock gives a more emotional sound especially within the haunting third track of Forest Of Doom that has elements of OPETH and Animal As Leaders transforming the Post-Metal energy quite suddenly.

The Emerald relies heavily on synths and dramatic soundscapes which expertly builds up the tension but also allows the record to breathe and grow naturally for the story to move onto its highly dramatic conclusion. Observers hit upon every corner of the Doom, Post-Rock and Post-Metal landscape throughout the album with gloomy passages having a deeply emotional core when moving the different time frames of Eighties Heavy Metal and modern day instrumental music.

Other standout tracks on the album to check out are: Asterophora, Predestination, Boreal World and Voices Within which contain the heaviest, gloomiest and epic guitar shredding moments on the entire record.

Observers have released another standout collection of tracks that does something wholly original and superbly cinematic with the Instrumental Doom Metal scene.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Exclusive Album Premiere Of Doom Metallers OBSERVERS New Album THE EMERALD

The Emerald is the second album from Martin Kennedy's instrumental metal project, Observers. The Emerald's instrumental post-metal was inspired by the primeval forests and hidden portals of the cover art by visionary art pioneer Gilbert Williams, one of Kennedy's favourite artists. Once again mixed by Joe Haley of Australia's Psycroptic, the album is equal parts crushing guitars and atmospheric soundscapes, reminiscent of Kennedy's ambient rock project All India Radio.

Observers' debut earned widespread acclaim, including selection on NPR's New Music Friday, a Wild One pick on ABC TV's Rage, and praise from critics around the world. Prog magazine hailed it as a "glorious instrumental reimagining of 2001: A Space Odyssey," while Distorted Sound called it "a sprawling space-metal epic." Steve Kilbey of The Church simply declared it "sounds brilliant," and Sea of Tranquility "Spacey and doomy" 3 stars.

Thanks to the amazing folks over at Good Boy PR you can hear the album in full with this exclusive album premiere.

The Emerald is available to buy now on CD/DD/Vinyl.
