Review

Deathdrone is the debut album from Death/Doom/Drone Metallers Burial Site where the name gives you a huge clue on what to expect for the album. As the band explore the lo-fi surroundings of the Death/Drone landscape with some brooding Doom Metal landscapes being added for gloomy effect. This isn’t the best produced record but it gives Burial Site some real brutal distorted heaviness into their music. 

The album is over sixty two minutes long spread across four tracks with the final Burial Site being over forty two minutes in length. There’s a warped psychological appeal that’s heard within the band’s music and with how lead vocalist Null’s harsh growls are delivered. The use of LOW & SLOW and DISTORTED grooves can be pitch black and ambient heavy within tracks The Will To Death and Doomsday Clock channeling the most violent aspects of SUNN 0))), EARTH and KHANATE.

Burial Site experiment with Black Metal, Noise Metal and stripped down Sludge Metal for a sound that’s always viciously heavy. This album isn’t going to be for everyone and there are parts that I continue to struggle with as the experimental NOISE METAL aspects are even too deafening for me to listen to but it’s superbly played. The whole album feels like it was recorded in the PITS OF HELL with the band playing their brutal style of DRONE METAL to the closing seconds. The long drawn out instrumental passages are given multiple creative makeovers which allows Burial Site to keep the listener on the edge of their seat especially through the mammoth forty two minutes final track. 

The excellent third track Shadows Etched In Stone does allow Burial Site to play a cool sounding Post-Rock and Semi-Acoustic track that has a deeply satisfying emotional centre to it all.

The final track does have faster grooves and frenzied Black Metal attacks with subtle shades of Psychedelic Terror moving the album into some highly unexpected areas of music. If you’re a fan of MERZBOW and MIZMOR then this track will feel like PARADISE to you all. I appreciated the technical and creative approach that Burial Site bring to this track alone.

I’m happy to admit that even though I found this album very hard to listen to at times, I still had a very good experience with the album that actually put me into some highly unexpected moments of terror along the way.

Deathdrone is a must have record for dedicated fans of the Extreme Metal Scene if you’re feeling brave enough that is!!!!

I Have No Name is the fifth album from Doom/Sludge/Post-Metallers Cult Of Occult and this is the first time I’ve featured them on the blog in over a decade or so. I honestly thought I reviewed their other albums since then as I’m a huge fan of their droned out and nihilistic vision. This time round the band offer an epic and bleak slice of Blackened Doom Metal that’s merged with Drone, Sludge and Post-Metal sensibilities.

The album lasts over seventy minutes across six tracks where Cult Of Occult perfect a violent style of twisted SONIC precision that brings a dark violent style of music that pays homage to the likes of EYEHATEGOD, THOU, SUNN 0))), SUMAC and NEURORIS. 

There feels like a neverending sense of filth and decay that’s set against a violent style of Progressive Metal which appears throughout the whole record. The brutal vocals move between sick growls and harsh delivery though they’re quite easy to understand for the most part.

All of the tracks start with the term “I Have No” which allows Cult Of Occult to show their complete hatred and distrust with almost everything around them in the modern world. The music is constantly moving to new levels of distorted hysteria which is pitched perfectly within the two epic opening tracks of I Have No Heart and I Have No Limbs.

These two tracks set out the whole mission statement for the album where everything is played with soul crushing melodies and bleak oppression appearing within the psychedelic and droned out surroundings the band wisely use a weapon of choice to power the message home to everyone who is brave enough to listen to the album

The LOW & SLOW creative movement allows Cult Of Cult to transform into a Blackened Post-Metal monster on tracks such as I Have No Limbs, I Have No Compassion, I Have No Tongue and I Have No End. The sheer level of misery and pure violent carnage that Cult Of Occult constructs with each singular track is quite a technical marvel. As they bring a highly original style of Extreme Metal to their music that solidifies the band as one of the best and heaviest metal bands to emerge from the French underground scene over the last fifteen years or so.

If you’re expecting moments of uplifting musical passages or cinematic surroundings then you’ll surely be disappointed as that’s not Cult Of Occult’s style. The lyrics are quite shocking at times with the violent vocals adding a layer of sheer brutality that will haunt your nightmares for a long time to come. Though, the best part of the album is how the band merges different areas of Sludge, Doom, Post-Metal, Psych and Prog Metal and transforms them into a violent apocalyptic style of pure BLACK METAL CHAOS that leaves you begging for more punishment. 

Sure, the music can be very long and drawn out at times but it’s done with real intent and purpose which allows I Have No Name to become a highly unmissable record especially if you're a dedicated follower of the EXTREME METAL scene. Cult Of Occult have once again delivered the goods with a spectacular record that can only be described as “ESSENTIAL LISTENING”.

Review

DevilsHarvest releases their latest twisted and violent creation est.IV:XX which is a fusion of evil sounding Doom, Drone, Sludge, Black Metal, Crust and Stoner Metal sounds. The main creative force behind Devil Harvest is Johnny Rumble is joined by some of his famous friends from the underground scene with the likes of Emanuel Portelli (Hemplifier, Thy Legion), Hiroyuki Takano (Sithter, ex-Church of Misery), Hyo Kagawa (Sithter) and Fight Lintner (Hollowed) who all lend a helping hand creating violent fucked up sounds throughout.

The album opens up with the epic first track 魔煙の奥底で散れwith Hiroyuki Takano and Hyo Kagawa and this is slow-to-mid played track that focus upon the more Blackened style of Drone, Doom and Crust Punk with the eerie distorted levels of amplified heaviness giving a more sinister vocal style throughout the song. The song can be quite slow-paced and brutally stubborn but you have to admire the bleak atmospherics that Johnny, Hiroyuki and Hyo have created here. This is perhaps my favourite track on the album as it showcases the most demonic themes on the whole album. There is also a blistering Stoner Metal riff-driven sound that appears towards the final stages of the track which showcases a different musical philosophy without losing all the nastiness or violent sounds that’s been built up previously.

Second track Tombstone Tourist is Johnny Rumble left to his own creative devices and this is a less aggressive and violent approach compared to the previous track. The song is still dominated by a violent Droned Out Fuzz attitude which aims for the top level of AMPLIFIER DISTORTION and MULTI-LEVEL FEEDBACK. The song is quite slow-paced yet again which does take time to fully find its groove. However, this is still a highly intriguing song to cause listeners nightmares with. DevilsHarvest conjures up an oppressive environment with overlapping droned instrumental passages that have a powerful “CHAINSAW!” and “INDUSTRIAL” effect.

Third song On the Devils Playground features Johnny joining forces with Fight Lintner & Hyo Kagawa for another round of crust punk aggression. The violent HARSH vocals appear once more for a song that has a slightly more chaotic and fast-paced direction with traces of Thrash Metal and Speed Metal appearing. This is a song built on nightmarish visions and distorted melodies with the whole journey becoming superbly evil with each passing second. There’s not much sense of melody on this track with DevilsHarvest focusing upon a sense of BLUNT WOUND TRAUMA style musical delivery.

Fourth track Daughter of Horror sees Emanuel Portelli joining the creative ranks of DevilsHarvest which opens with an Occult Doom soundbyte before settling down for an original style of Crust Punk, Doom Metal and Sludge Metal surroundings. This is quite an intriguing concept with the OCCULT and HORROR influence with DevilsHarvest playing different styles for Drone and Doom which makes this another of the standout tracks on the album. The song is slightly long at almost fifteen minutes in length but when the HEAVIER DISTORTED grooves take complete control then there is not stopping Johnny and Emanuel generating another FUCKED UP slice of ugly melodies of the highest order.

The final three tracks of AsMadAsHell, Indica//Sativa and Frequently sees Johnny Rumble on his own without his famous musical brotherhood to help him out and he pulls this off violent charm especially on tracks AsMadAsHell and Indica//Sativa. The PISSED OFF soundclips and depressive DRONE sounds just pushes the EVIL menacing instrumental passages into a surreal level of extreme darkness for the listener to fully survive from.

DevilsHarvest have released an exquisite record that is a brutally violent and surreal musical adventure that will SCARE you for a long time to come.

Review

The Past Melts Away With A Sneer is the fourth full length album from one-man Blackened Doom/Sludge Metal collective Doubsower and this is my first experience with Matt Strangis’s highly disturbing and nihilistic creative alter ego. This record is full of gloomy visions and harsh sonic landscapes that moves within the areas of Industrial Metal, Funeral Doom, Post-Metal, Post-Rock and Horror Movie Soundtracks for an album that is highly unusual and brilliantly eclectic at the same time.

Doubtsower has gained a lot of great praise from the musical underground scene and it’s not hard to see why as Matt is very passionate about making music across the wider musical spectrum. As Matt plays bass in doom merchants "Pantheist", and also produces experimental electronic music under the alias "Kyam". The whole atmosphere is creepy with Doubtsower playing heavy amounts of warped FUNERAL DOOM soundscapes that’s wrapped around a ton of disturbing ELECTRONIC beats which does take time for the “REAL” metallic movements to appear. 

Matt teases and scares the hell out of the listener with expertly placed soundbytes and sound effects that amps up the tension. Doubtsower feels inspired by the highly controversial and deeply uncomfortable horror movies of European and Asian cinema. This record isn’t watered down by any means with the slow-paced Black Metal grooves merging into heavier slices of violent ELECTRONICA and INDUSTRIAL beats with extreme vocals to match. 

Though, Matt does show a keen sense of melody within the more restrained Post-Rock and Post-Metal passages that appear from momentarily within the album. The record’s main strength is it’s gloomy and highly unapologetic production style which has a real core DIY PUNK ethic running throughout and with the amazing Greg Chandler (from legendary funeral doom band Esoteric) handling mastering duties, this is one record that not only dares to be different within the realm of Funeral Doom but actually rewrites the rule book.

This is a singular forty nine minute track with Doubtsower showcasing one of the best extreme records to emerge from within the UK and WELSH underground metal scene in quite some time. The level of dedication and technical ability that Matt plays on this album is simply astonishing to listen to and to make me emotionally invested for an album such as this is no small feat.

Expect The Unexpected with The Past Melts Away With A Sneer as this is as close as to perfection you’ll ever hear in the world of Experimental Doom Metal.

Doom/Sludge Metallers Tumanduumband return with their latest album Hail Satan, Triumph Awaits which is another lo-fi, miserable and minimalist sounding adventure full of DRONE textures, creepy soundbytes and a SHIT TON of down-tuned misery for the underground masses. This time round Tumanduumband taps into the bleak early sounds of ELECTRIC WIZARD and matches a lo-fi aesthetic where the whole journey is more SPACED OUT with fully formed storylines being told through their excellent use of sound clips and creepy sound effects.

Hail Satan, Triumph Awaits is a worthy follow up to their 2023 debut album with Tumanduumband playing longer strands of music across three epic tracks with two of those running over at eleven minutes and eighteen minutes. The minimal style of emotionally charged melodies remind me of FALL OF EFRAFA at times with Tumanduumband exploring multiple different areas of Drone and Post-Black Metal whilst continuing to develop their main Doom/Sludge Metal approach to the album.

The three tracks on offer here have different levels of heaviness warped in bleak mystery and misery with Tumanduumband creating challenging pieces of music to listen to. The album is wholly instrumental with the reliance of sound clips to tell an intriguing story full of classic OCCULT HORROR themes which come across brilliantly well on Consulting The Haruspex and Alive In Death perhaps being the most theatrical and dramatic of the whole album.

You can picture Tumanduumband playing the whole album in full within a small, compact and gloomy live venue with scenes of classic horror movies being projected against a small screen. Yeah, tons of bands have done that over the years but Tumanduumband have managed to capture that eerie vibe throughout this stunning album.

The harsh DRONE textures and groove orientated Doom/Sludge passages sets the stage for an exciting finale within the standout final track Hail Satan, Triumph Awaits where Tumanduumband demonstrates a more heavier and highly atmospheric style of down-tuned aggression that also has a sense of filth and decay building up behind the amps to fully consume your souls with.

Hail Satan, Triumph Awaits is another superb record from Tumanduumband that sees them deliver a much better record to their debut album which I’m a huge fan of. This feels more fully fleshed out with a much better creepier narrative that sells the whole dark and twisted vision that Tumanduumband have ultimately excelled themselves with.

Coltaine are back with their latest offering Brandung and whilst the songs maybe shorter than the ones held on their previous release that doesn’t mean Coltaine are cutting corners with the emotionally charged grooves they’ve made their name with. Far from it. As Brandung is an emotionally charged release that transcends multiple genres, themes, sounds and delicate ambient passages for a record that’s musically complex but also emotionally rewarding throughout.

Coltaine are perhaps defined as a Post-Doom/Post-Metal collective with flashes of Black Metal, Psych Rock. Post-Rock, Drone and Orchestral sounds for a bold, grand and musical statement that has influences such as Chelsea Wolfe, Wolves In The Throne Room, Godspeed You Black Emperor helping their creative cause.

The music is stripped back to its rightly cold hearted score which is also helped by the excellent recording duties and production values contained on the record. I was quite surprised to see my Jan Oberg (EARTH SHIP and GRIN) on mixing and mastering duties on this album. He pulls out all the stops as usual making Coltaine sound absolutely unique with a fresh spin on the whole Post-Doom/Blackened Post-Metal sound. Credit must also go to recording engineers Gregor Rieth & Amin Bouzeghaia as well. So production values get a major THUMBS UP from me.

Now back to the actual album itself with Brandung being quite a highly original style of evolving Post-Metal sounds with that ice-cold Blackened Metal drive with Julia Frasch’s vocals being beautiful, dynamic, aggressive and quite destructive within the heavier moments especially on tracks such as Memories Of Ice, Keep Me Down In The Deep, Above The Burning Sand and Brandung.

The album itself feels like one lengthy song broken down into individual chapters with each offering haunting melodies, ice-cold lyrics and captivating storylines to show how Coltaine have evolved brilliantly ever since their inception back in 2022 though some members were part of the much missed WITCHFUCKER. The excellent use of different musical instruments adds a sublime ETHEREAL vibe that appears within the shorter tracks of Tiefe Wasser, Black Coral and Wirbelwind.

The shorter tracks are perhaps the most dominated by Orchestral and Post-Rock movements which adds a sense of CINEMATIC sounds to the whole album. Though, Coltaine does add “extra” spice to the mix within the shorter tracks with outbursts of Julia’s intense screams and sudden shift into Psychedelic paranoia laced with Post-Black Metal intrigue. 

Brandung is a richly observed and emotionally charged album with Coltaine breathing new life into the whole Post-Doom scene with complex rhythms, vocal harmonies and epic Post-Metal soundscapes combining for one of the most intense and beautifully realized records you’ll hear this year.

Your Mother’s Disgusting Window debut self-titled album opens with a soundclip from the classic 1990’s film HEAT directed by the legendary Michael Mann which sets the tone for the whole album. As the scene in question is perhaps one of the nastiest and sinister clips from that amazing film. Your Mother’s Disgusting Window is primarily the work of Darlene Aaron who has been part of the Australian underground musical scene for the best part of two decades. 

This record is a violent record through and through with Your Mother’s Disgusting Window fusing Drone, Psych, Punk, Doom, Black Metal, Noise, Sludge, Stoner and Industrial. With a despairing level of ELECTRONICA vibes which can be quite unsettling to fully listen through at times. However, the record does have its fair share of sublime grooves, riffs and extended instrumental passages.

The band is influenced by the likes of SUNN 0))), Corrupted, Grief, EYEHATEGOD, SLEEP, BLACK SABBATH, THE MELVINS. SWANS and BORIS. If that amazing line-up of bands intrigues you then be prepared for an Avant-Garde style of nightmarish sounds, brash vocals and heavy industrialized moments.

The opening song of Untitled is the speech from the classic film of HEAT before the album truly begins with the terrifying Spree Killing. A song so nasty and vicious with Your Mother’s Disgusting Window fully selling their nightmarish creative attitude that feels like Nine Inch Nails, Ministry and SUNN 0))) vying for control of your immortal soul. The sounds are nihilistic, progressive and quite long but one that leaves a great impression of how daring the record actually can be.

Third track Grim Reality adds a subversive Sludge Metal and gloomy Post Punk identity to the record that allows Darlene to fully sell the “outsider” vibe that the record contains. I don’t know why but listening to this track reminded me of classic films by David Cronenberg and the TETSUO films. The tone is once again grimy and beautifully fucked up at the same time, The slow paced mechanics allows the desolate melodies and twisted guitars to build a destructive level of DRONE to force people into actual submission. Perhaps one of the most violent offerings of Blackened Sludge Metal and Noise Rock I’ve heard in quite some time.

Fourth track Kill Me does at least try to aim for a more straightforward riff-centric style of melody but still with twisted amounts of primal Drone and Black Metal. The electronica based beats and industrial glitches add a surreal sense of survival where carnage and chaos reigns supreme. There’s a twisted aura of AMPLIFIER FEEDBACK and LOW & SLOW atmospherics struggling to break out at times but Your Mother’s Disgusting Window always keeps the twisted Drone Metal / Industrial mechanics firmly in control.

Fifth track Pig World follows the same creative path of Kill Me with a less abrasive and violent approach though everything is still catastrophically demonic at heart. This is one of the standout tracks on the record with Darlene laying down twisted melodies of the highest order. 

The final track of Obliterate is a lengthy twenty minute plus number that sees Your Mother’s Disgusting Window just go all out for a final epic assault on the senses. Darlene is joined by Black Metal/Blackwave legend Sin Nanna (Striborg, Sunn o)))) on this number who provides ruthless vocals to this masterclass of SONIC based terrorism that will leave you having nightmares for a very long time to come.

Your Mother’s Disgusting Window is perhaps the most violent and twisted record I’ve heard this year. It has a fearless attitude and violent creative energy you just don’t come across much these days. This isn’t a record you can listen to over and over again. This did take me a few weeks to write this review as it left me a shivering wreck which I’m not afraid to admit to. However, this is an astonishing record to devour especially if you’re a dedicated follower of the EXTREME METAL scene.
