Review
The Escapist is the second EP from Chilean Heavy Metal/Stoner Metal crew Faceless Empress whose music is inspired by the American and European Stoner Metal scenes with elements of Grunge that will appeal to fans of Alice In Chains, DOZER, SASQUATCH and Greenleaf according to the press release that accompanied the EP.
And that’s not a bad description with Faceless Empress playing their dominant GRUNGE inspired sound with a gloomy DARK presence resonating within the blend of Heavy Metal passages that transpires within the hard-hitting opening track of Death XIII. There’s a slight reliance on Groove Metal and Speed Metal within that track and it’s quite a daring style of music to open the EP with.
Second track Wrecked is more of a gloomy disposition with lo-fi Psychedelic beats slowly converging onto the Doom/Stoner Metal realm with that Grunge appetite making itself known within the haunting vocals. The music becomes more focused and heavier when the instrumental beats move up a few levels on the decibel charts. The guitars are more tuned to stylish Heavy Metal classic solos with the rest of the track aligning itself once again to the thrilling and modern way of Stoner Metal.
Third song The Escapist is perhaps the catchiest and most aggressive track on the EP with Faceless Empress playing a direct and straightforward style of music that still veers throughout the different parts of their creative influence with the Grunge aspect slowly transforming into punishing slabs of Stoner Rock/Metal. There’s a deep love of 1980’s Hard Rock and 1990’s Grunge/Stoner based attitude within this track which sees the earlier stages of the EP becoming more interesting thanks to the constant use of epic guitar solos and stunning rhythm section work throughout.
The Escapist is a refreshing change of pace and style of music from the South American Heavy Metal/Stoner Metal scene with Faceless Empress releasing another highly impressive EP to make themselves known throughout the global underground scene.
