Review

Heavy Rock/Space/Stoner Rockers TurtleJet arrive from the German Stoner Rock scene and they have a rich and highly confident sound on their debut self titled record which can be quite classic sounding at times but with a cool contemporary feeling. The constant Space Rock grooves have an almost “SOUNDTRACK” based delivery which can be quite Progressive which is superbly delivered on the opening tracks of Prologue, Cosmic Fire and Brittle.

TurtleJet could also be considered quite RETRO but with an Alternative vibe heard within the heavier moments of the record. The vocals are melodic with an Indie Rock feel at times but there’s a bombastic STONER edge to them when the band sing about the far reaches of SPACE and the COSMOS. The grooves are subtle and have a sense of aggression appearing even within the quieter moments of the record which drifts eerily into movements of Post-Rock and Post-Stoner environments.

The band show their HEAVY METAL or STONER METAL credentials within the standout track of Drag Me To Hell where the vocals show a sinister side to TurtleJet and the music easily transforms into a ferocious style of Doom Metal and Grunge which was a really pleasant surprise. This shows that TurtleJet can deliver a more threatening style of music whilst keeping their peaceful Post-Rock attitude.

The other standout tracks on the record include Ready Set Overkill and First Day which sees TurtleJet once again deliver the heaviest grooves and sounds on the whole record with deft touches of Psych Rock and Post-Stoner melodies.

Production is handled superbly well with a highly confident and allows TurtleJet to deliver a superbly realized and thrilling debut release that should gain the band some cool attention with the Stoner Rock/Metal underground scene.
