Review
The Cimmerian debut full length album An Age Undreamed Of… which is an aggressive onslaught of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal with classic THRASH METAL vibes which combines High On Fire riff-wizardry with overtly fantastical storytelling themes for a record that’s quite primal throughout. The record never loses its primal soul with an understated use of down-tuned passages and aggressive Speed Metal grooves that come fully into focus on the excellent opening tracks of Shadow Kingdom and Neckbreaker Of The Mountain.
If you ever wondered what Matt Pike would sound like if given a slightly Death Metal/Hardcore makeover then Nicolas Rocha (Septik Onslaught and ex-Deathkings) has a similar type of vocal gravitas which leans heavily into the “PISSED OFF” delivery of vocals with a sublime style of Thrash Metal that’s been spliced with MOTORHEAD type energy. The CImmerian use of FANTASY folklore such as CONAN and LORD OF THE RINGS allows the band to run free with their own epic blend of creative storytelling with some of the songs being quite FOLK obsessive along the way which is a good thing for an album such as this.
However, the majority of the record allows The Cimmerian to conjure up a wickedly entertaining style of different Psychedelic and weirdly melodic beats when they’re not focusing on bringing THRASH/SPEED METAL carnage to the realm of the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal underground scene. The collection of tracks that make up An Age Undreamed Of.. have a masterful storytelling element to them with superbly instrumental passages and solos that add a level of Progressive heaviness to the mix.
When The Cimmerian opts for a despondent style of Prog Metal on tracks such as Silver And Gold, Darkwolf, Deathstalker and Monarch the whole flow, sound and vision of the record becomes quite cinematic and dominated by HEAVY METAL themes and imagery.
The vocals from Nicolas helps to fully sell this fantastical illusion with his intense bass guitar as well. David Morales on Drums and David Gein (Septik Onslaught, The Scimitar and ex-Black Pyramid) are perhaps considered the real muscle within The Cimmerian with their powerful drum beats and frantic sludgy guitars that build upto stunning levels of audio devastation.
An Age Undreamed Of… has a deeply unapologetic and unforgiving classic metal vision which screams pure 1980’s RAWK & ROLL EXCESS but dragged kicking and screaming into the 21t Century with the band’s excellent use of modern day Sludge/Stoner Metal sounds. This allows the album to be one of the most fast-paced and deeply engrossing FANTASTICAL records I’ve heard in quite some time.
