Review
Duskhead started in 2013 as a side project of TANK86 drummer Rogier Berben and bassist Jochum van Weert, who sought an outlet for some of their more accessible heavy rock material that didn’t fit the heavy instrumental aesthetic of TANK86. After releasing two EPs and playing several shows in the Dutch underground in 2013 and 2014, the focus shifted back to TANK86 and Duskhead went on hiatus.
The band has now re-emerged as a power-trio with Elmer Meijers (The Grand Astoria) taking up guitar duties
The Messenger is the latest EP from Psych/Sludge/Stoner Rockers Duskhead which offers a good old fashioned blast of grooves inspired by the likes of CLUTCH, KYUSS and FU MANCHU. There’s a slight rebellious and outlook attitude to Duskhead which allows them to tap into that popular style of FUZZ, DESERT ROCK and BLUES ROCK with a certain Heavy Rock swagger which allows the first half of the EP to feature the the two best tracks of the EP with Two Head and My Guitar Will Save The Day.
Duskhead offers more melody and stoner rock aggression with its mighty throwback style of music though the title track of Kill The Messenger perhaps contains the heaviest sounds. The EP is unashamedly retro and modern sounding at the same with Duskhead enjoying both musical eras with Jochum van Weert’s vocals continuously impressing.
This is very much a riff-centric and groove driven record and whilst it’s been done a million times before, Duskhead show why they matter where it counts with a non-stop style of classic Hard Rock riffs that allows The Messenger to be classed as dynamite entertainment despite the short fifteen minutes running time.
The Messenger even has wicked moments of Alt Rock wrapped in a heavy Fuzz Rock atmosphere which appears mostly within the final parts of the EP that perhaps will endear them more to the Stoner Rock community compared to the first half they play on this great record.
Have a listen for yourselves and you’ll be rewarded with a superbly entertaining EP.
