Review

Silver Veins is the third full length album from Psych Stoner Rockers Bentrees who push their musical and creative boundaries even further into areas of Post-Rock on this record. The album has a catchier and aggressive melodic sound compared to their acclaimed first two records. Imagine the classic Desert Rock swagger of Yawning Man, the legendary sounds of FU MANCHU and KYUSS that’s matched against a subdued King Buffalo based Post-Stoner energy. That’s the type of sound that Bentress aims for within the excellent opening track The Sky Never Dies.

The sound is quite grounded with a Progressive energy channeling a lovely Blues Rock vibe within the quieter moments of the track. Riccardo Podda’s vocals tap superbly into the Desert Rock/Stoner Rock scene with flashes of John Garcia-esque vocals. The music becomes one more with Post-Doom and Classic Rock before the song naturally closes with a highly dominant musical performance from both Riccardo Podd on Guitars and Mauro Cocco on Drums.

Second track The Sea contains a cool “AQUATIC” energy despite this being a thoroughly modern Desert Rock number but the “OCEANIC” energy that Bentrees inject into this track is superbly emotionally pitched in all of the right places. Drifting from Post-Stoner vibes to a sullen Post-Rock atmosphere allows the band to play a multitude of different flavours from the “Post-Whatever” world whilst continuing to project an intriguing story at the same time. The song starts deliberately quiet before exploding into almost Stoner Metal textures with a thrilling Post-Doom and Fuzz Rock attitude. Everything is dominated by that slightly fuzzy and distorted environment which allows The Sea to be one of the standout and most creatively interesting tracks on the whole record.

Third track Away is the most cinematic and musically diverse track on the album with Bentress bringing moments of Ambient Rock and Shoegaze with slightly Prog Rock elements into the mix. The song is still part of the Stoner Rock world with the “AQUATIC” theme being drawn upon yet again. Things start quite slow with Bentrees setting up the creative building blocks for a LOUD AREA of noise to develop that slowly transforms into a soulful and deeply engaging Post-Rock sound with subtle flashes of Psychedelic energy leaving you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside. This is Bentrees playing music on a grand adventurous scale with the right balance of LOUD vs QUIET instrumental dynamics contained within.

The second half of the album sees Bentrees continue with that musical journey but one that’s more personal and reflective with Bentrees relying on Post-Stoner and Ambient Rock deliveries more than anything on the tracks of Alienated, Beyond The Mind and Silver Veins. Bentrees play with a heavy Sludge Rock and Grunge based attitude on this part of the album which is where the heaviest instrumental passages and sludgy soundscapes appear with Alienated and Silver Veins being the other standout tracks of the album.

Silver Veins is a thrilling, bold and highly adventurous record that allows Bentrees to explore new musical avenues that ride off huge waves of originality that are simply beautiful and brilliantly majestic. Even this late in the game, Bentrees have released a definitive ALBUM OF THE YEAR contender right here.
