An Interview With Doom/Stoner Metal Amphibian Overlords FROGLORD

Doom/Stoner Metallers FROGLORD has one of the most intriguing and interesting creative story lines within the whole scene. Their acclaimed and highly original "Tale Of The Froglord Saga" has seen them release acclaimed albums since their inception in 2020 and a legion of followers within the underground scene. Their 2025 album "Metamorphosis" was perhaps their most outlandish and acclaimed record to date with Froglord drawing a close to this aspect of the "Froglord" saga.

Now the band have taken a step back from that saga to release their sixth album LOWER & SLOWER on March 06th 2026. Recorded live in a single studio take, Lower & Slower re-imagines six fan favourites from across the band’s catalogue in crushing, funeral-paced form. Everything is tuned deeper, slower and heavier a raw, immersive descent into the swamp.

Froglord revisit tracks such as They Came From Saturn and Green Inferno, culminating in a colossal, sludge-soaked rendition of Black Sabbath’s Iron Man.

Importantly, this release carries a strong charitable focus.

• 100% of digital proceeds
• 50% of physical and merch profits

will be donated to the Waterfowl & Wetland Trust (WWT), supporting their mission to restore 100,000 hectares of wetlands by 2050. Environmental advocacy has always been woven into Froglord’s mythos, and this release channels that ethos into direct action.

I always wanted to interview FROGLORD for a long time and I've finally caught up with the Amphibian Overlords of Doom/Stoner Metal.

Read on for a great interview.

Hi guys. How are things with you all today.

Smashing thank you, Spring is upon us and the swamp is coming alive once again, for another exciting year.

For people not in the know, can you give a brief history of how the band came together and where it is today.

The project began in 2020 in the early days of the lock-down era, birthing as a one-frog endeavour. It stayed like this for the first couple of years, then after migrating to the swamps of Bristol, I crossed paths with 3 swamp priests who all conveniently happened to play guitar, bass, and drums. At which point we began performing our swamp rituals live, touring across the UK, and on occasion across the swamps into Europe.

Why did you call yourselves Froglord.

The Froglord is an amphibious deity, that rises from the mystic swamps every 10,000 years to restore the earth to its natural balance. We pay homage and offer reverence to his name.

Where did you come up with the overall idea for your acclaimed "Tale Of The Froglord Saga"

The ancient text of The Book of Amphibian has been guarded closely by the swamp cult for timeless generations. We have interpreted its words and prophecies into the sonic format presented today.

How many records is the saga spread across and are there more parts of the Froglord Saga to be released in the future.

Currently the saga has seen 5 instalments. With the first 3 records – Amphibian Ascending, The Mystic Toad, & Army of Frogs – presenting the original tale, telling of the Froglord's return during the modern era and subsequent war against the humans upon seeing their tyranny of environmental destruction. The following records act as sort of prequel to this story, which will ultimately see the story come full circle as we bare witness to the birth of the amphibious diety.

We're here to discuss your new album "LOWER & SLOWER" What can people expect from that record.

In Lower & Slower we revisit several songs from our back catalogue, presenting alternate maximum doomier versions. As the title would suggest, these are all played lower & slower than the originals. The record was recorded as “live in the studio”, as a full band in single session, this was to try create something that would feel akin to the live Froglord experience.

How did you decide on what classic tracks to include on the record.

There wasn’t too much deliberation in it. I think we already knew which tracks would lend themselves better to be interpreted the sound and vibe we wanted to achieve with this record. Of course there are a several tracks which are definitely some of our more popular tracks such as They Came From Saturn and Green Inferno, but we also wanted to give a new light to some of our favourite ones to play live that perhaps don’t get quite as much love, such as Road Raisin or Die By The Slime.

Was this a hard choice for you to include these selection of tracks and do you wish you could now include somewhere.

There's a very good reason that the record's title as “Vol. 1”. There's many more that we would love to re-imagine as Lower & Slower tracks in the future!

Your epic cover of the classic Sabbath track - Iron Man is brilliant. Why did you choose that cover. Any particular meaning.

It was certainly daunting to cover one of metals biggest songs, present that through the eyes of the swamp, and then have that track as one of the albums singles, but being a doom band we would be nothing without Sabbath and we thought it only right to pay tribute in this way. There are also some parallels between the Iron Man's tale of wishing to protect the earth only to be shunned by humanity; and that of The Froglord’s plight.

It's brilliant how you're donating 100% of digital proceeds and 50% of physical and merch profits to the Waterfowl & Wetland Trust (WWT). Obviously with your name being FROGLORD, this is a very important cause to you all. Did you have any other charitable organisations in mind or is this one quite close to you personally.

We’ve also been an environmental band at our core, in order to appease the wrath of the mighty Froglord hen he reawakens from his slumber. We’ve done work for Save the Frogs! In the past, most notably in our 2022 EP Save The Frogs. However on this occasion we wanted to do something closer to home. Being Bristol-Based we are blessed to have WWT Slimbridge only 30 minutes up the road from us. It is an incredible site and one I have spent countless hours wandering around and bathing in the peace of the many bird hides.

What is the creative process or setup within the band? Do you write the music together or do certain people within the band do that.

I (Froglord) still do the bulk of the writing myself, our guitarist Caudata is increasingly contributing to that process. Oftentimes he will come to me with a riff, and I will work that into the full track. It would be a disservice to them all however, to say that they have not all contributed and shaped that writing process quite significantly. They are all incredible musicians, and I am very lucky to have them here in the swamp.

Did your daily struggles, challenges and uplifting moments in life shape up the creative outline for the whole Froglord saga.

I have fairly extensive background working and studying within some facet of an environmental framework. Froglord was another manifestation of that work so far.

You're from Bristol, UK. What is the local Hard Rock and Heavy Metal scene like there? Is there a thriving gig scene and community that allows you to perform regularly or do you have to travel further afield to perform on a regular basis.

I have been lucky to live all over the UK, and can safely say the Bristol has one of the best metal scenes the UK has to offer in my personal opinion. I wouldn’t suggest we play in Bristol overly regularly. As with any other city, over saturation is something best avoided. But we are very busy frogs and have been performing all over the UK and beyond, pretty tirelessly and extensively for a few years now.

What future gigs have you coming up and will you be promoting the album more this year

We have a big list of exciting shows this year coming. Firstly our headline tour around the UK with Space Pistol over April. July will see us on the road supporting Bat Sabbath (the alter egos of Cancer Bats) for two weeks. Plus we’ve got some amazing festivals coming, not least to mention Bloodstock Festivals. Then between all of that there’s also a bunch of shows planned! It’s a lot to keep up with, but folks can find the full list at any of socials and buy tickets from www.Froglord.org. As for the rest of the year, time will tell if there is more in store!

What are your favourite venues when you have toured in the past. Any particular venues or locations you always look forward to when touring.

Exchange in Bristol is in many ways our ground zero. It’s where we things really started happening for us after winning Bristol M2TM there in 2024. So it’s always a joy to play there, especially as it’s our home swamp. There's several great venues that we always try come back to, but some of our favourites are Signature Brew in London, Corporation in Sheffield, and Dead Wax in Birmingham.

How would you describe the live FROGLORD experience.

To see Froglord live is to wander through a murky endless swamp in the heart of dusk. In the distance you follow the sound of drums where you find a crazed cult of swamp dwellers deep in ritual. Guide by plumes of smoke, you stagger into their ceremony. Before you stands the might and terror of the great amphibious lord himself. By the time you come to round from the haze and delirium, the swamp is empty again and you are left wondering whether any of it was real

What bands or artists influenced you to pick up an instrument and to become a musician.

When I was a tadpole my first major influence to pick up and instrument was watching Angus Young play guitar for AC/DC. Shortly thereafter, the first band I saw live was Turisas, as they were opening on tour for Dragonforce. To this day Turisas’ Varangian Way album is still in my top 10 albums of all time, and I think has played a massive role in my gravitational towards concept albums.

Do you have any side projects that folks can check out.

I’ve released a number of one-man black metal projects over the years. Definitely my favourite of the bunch however was an EP called I Hate Stuart Little. As they tittle suggest, I hate him.

Before you go, do you have any words of wisdom for your fans currently out there

Stay hydrated and go visit your local wetlands.
