Time For Salvation. If You Need It Of Course. An Interview With 1968.

1968 released their new album "Salvation If You Need..." recently and it's perhaps their most daring, creative and boldest album yet. You can read my review here.

The band have been making a great name for themselves within the Stoner Rock/Metal scene since they released debut EP back in January 2016. I became an instant fan of their trippy style of Stoner Rock which merges elements of Psych Rock, Prog Rock, Hard Rock and Classic Rock into their overall sound.

It's seen the band win fans and critical plaudits for all of their records.

I wanted to interview 1968 for a while and now here is my chance....

Hi guys. Thanks for doing this interview. How are things with you today?

“We’re all OK, we’re safe, we’re back to real life now in all of our personal lives which has provided a huge wave of relief, thank you for asking.”

For people not in the know. Can you give a brief history of how the band came together and where it is today.

“The band came together in 2013 after an online meetup. We have managed to ride out the worst of the storms that can face an independent band in the current musical industry climate and produce a back catalogue and have a fair live reputation we feel.”

The band have gone slightly heavier and more doomier on your new album Salvation if You Need…. compared to your previous records. It has a seedier Punk Rock and Doomier vibe. Is that how you wanted to go for this release?

“Thank you, we opted for a different route in the recording of Salvation. We took the feedback we received from Ballads and particularly Chemtrail Blues, which we had recorded live with overdubs. We took this and ran with it, when we entered the studio, we only actually had three or four of the songs finished. In short, we wrote most of the album in the studio and recorded it live. This ended up in a kind of Stooges era sound coming through which we embraced by turning it up more and basically just had fun with what foundations we’d laid.”

Salvation if You Need…. about. As it’s quite dark but still being a thrilling RAWK record.

Yeah, it has darker moments for sure, but we aimed to have a full spectrum of colours and sounds for each track. We’re glad it’s giving out the thrills.

Why did you call the album Salvation if You Need…. - Any particular reason for this title

“We settled on Salvation If You Need… as the sessions were following the first lockdown and quite frankly, after we hung up our touring/live show boots, we were all in desperate need of some form of Salvation due to the nature of lockdown 2020. After further discussion we decided another studio album would be in order. Ballads has been out for a few years now and we felt it was time for a follow up. It was timed to be out when the pandemic ended and it feels like for once, we were on time.”

You’ve signed to No Profit Recordings for this album. How did you hook-up with them?

“We’ve worked with No Profit before as they realised the dream of getting our first EP’s pressed on vinyl. The whole team is absolutely awesome. They understand how record deals should work going forward for bands that don’t necessarily rely on others to run their craft. They contacted us first and have a keen eye for detail that not many other labels have in our experience. The deal for Salvation album ends when the vinyl is sold out just like for the 1968/Fortuna Havana album, we have album-by-album deal and it is agreed upon by both us and them.”

Did you have any other labels interested in releasing the album?

“Nothing other than a few slippery DM’s, which is likely a direct result of us burning the last contract we physically signed. C’est La Vie”

You recorded the album during the brief reprise lockdown break in Summer 2020. How was recording this album during this period? Did you have to do anything differently compared to your previous releases.

“We recorded Salvation in a completely different way to Ballads as we recorded it all in the same room and used the best of four takes to get the right one. We then added overdubs and vocals but tried to keep them to a minimum in order to capture the live feel.”

What influenced or inspired you when making this album.

“I guess we were influenced by being able to sit off with our friends when the world was in meltdown was a pretty big inspiration. I would say that our influences hadn’t changed and the fact that we had some salvation in the room together meant we inspired each other.”

What comes first for you when recording new music. Lyrics or Music.

“Definitely the music, the rest write riffs then vocals are added either during the jams or afterwards. They’re usually the last to be tweaked.”

COVID-19 has pretty much put a stop to all life as we know it for the time being. How big of an impact has it affected 1968 And how are you surviving in this stressful time.

“In all honesty, COVID-19 allowed 1968 to record. Which is something we’re usually pretty lazy with. Band members had some struggles with bereavements and travel restrictions which were heavy times but part of the deal with life. The stress was largely ignored until it was channelled into the studio”

After everything is back to some sort of normality. What does the future hold for1968. Will you be touring the record in the UK.

“Yeah, for sure, we’ll be likely playing slightly less shows than normal but we will return when normality resumes.”

The album cover for the new album is excellent. Who designed the cover and how much input did you have into the overall design of the cover.

“The cover was a bit of a strange one where an idea that resonated with us all and became a collective piece. We had seen Emily Blay post B-movie style art online which looked like an album cover to us all. We met Emily’s demands and used her photos which were then doctored by Scott Leyland. We then had artwork created by Mark Vernall for the rear of the LP sleeve, Matt Negus and James Byles provided some of the best photography of our time at the studio. We also have Jamie Jones and Fos from Heroin Skateboards providing their art to it. Basically what happened was an idea we had, initially wouldn’t work so we made it work by adding more and more art to it”

What have been your favourite records that you’ve heard this year. Regardless of genre.

“Woven Man, Revelry In Our Arms, Particularly the track, With Willow”

Thanks for doing this interview. Before you go, do you have any words of wisdom that you want to say to your fans.

“Thank you all for your support, we couldn’t do this without you all. Please stay safe, stay loud, stay positive and ignore the negativity.”

Words by Steve Howe and 1968

Thanks to Mario at No Profit Recordings for arranging this interview and for 1968 to answering my questions.

Review

Salvation If You Need… is UK Psych Stoner Rockers 1968 contribution to the 4/20 celebrations and it maybe a different style album you would associate with 4/20 but there is a lot of Hard Rock influenced Stoner based grooves with a sense of almost Punk Rock and Classic Rock rebellion. The album cover should tell you that 1968 are happy to bend and rewrite the rules for their own purposes.

This album was recorded in Summer 2020 when the UK had a brief relaxation period from the lockdown rules the country keeps going through, 1968 have delivered an album packed full of 60s and 70s Hard Rock charm but with the added bonus of modern day Stoner Rock swagger.

There’s 10 tracks on this release and the band show early signs of playing a different sound on the excellent opening track - Railroad Boogie - which does show signs of almost ZZ-Top Boogie style rock with a glorious upbeat Psychedelic atmosphere. The vocals are bang-on point with classic rock guitars laying down the groundwork for the album to follow,

Second song - Trail Of Dogs - sees 1968 up the Stoner Rock ante with an almost Doom Rock vibe coming into play but the band hold off by playing a more singular Punk Rock vibe whilst setting off against a 70s Classic Hard Rock backdrop. There is also a “grunge” element which gives an almost “Soundgarden” feel and 1968 just seem to grow ever more confident with this song.

Third song - Blackwing - contains a more lo-fi Punk based environment with cool guitars playing an almost solitary style of music. The vocals feel stripped back along with the music but still allowing 1968 the opportunity to play some excellent guitar riffs along the way.

Fourth song - Here It Lies - is where 1968 move up a gear and play the 1zt true standout song on the album where everything is played for maximum effect. Loud guitars and loud vocals remind myself of the sounds the band released on their debut album. The song moves effortlessly from one style of music to the next with the production being superb and offering 1968 the chance to play to their musical strengths with some of the best and flashiest sounds on the record.

1968 just go from strength to strength from here on in with the band bringing in a “Blues Rock” approach and writing some of the best parts of the album with the following songs impressing myself the most: Guts, Eastern Wind, Small Victories and Night Hornet.

Salvation. If You Need… is a much better record than their debut release. It may not seem that way at first as there’s a lot to take in with this release. This is a darker and more daring release with 1968 playing a blend of music that fuses the classic Psychedelic Rock sounds of yesteryear and the more hard-hitting Stoner Rock grooves of today.

Overall, this album is a fantastic slice of Psychedelic Stoner Rock which is action-packed to keep fans coming back for more.

Review

Live in Los Angeles is the new live album from UK Psych Stoner Rockers – 1968 – from their recent USA Tour which the band went down a storm with US audiences. Well, especially from the sound of this huge sounding live recording from the world famous venue - “Whisky A Go Go”. The band play a stunning set of their most well known songs such as – Temple Of The AcidWolf, Wardogs, Fortune Havana and epic sounding song- McQueen. The band include a new song – Blackwing -on this album and it’s a very good song indeed.

There are no hidden surprises on this album and you’ve perhaps heard all of the songs before. Though it’s good to hear what 1968 sound like on the live stage. This album has been Mixed and Mastered as close as hearing the band actually on stage. The album isn’t the best produced but it draws you into the murky atmosphere of the world famous venue.

1968 play a greatest hits set-list on this album. They have to especially with this being their debut USA Tour. They have to let the audience know what the band do on the live stage and they don’t disappoint. As you can hear the audience lapping up the entire show. It’s a precise 36 minute show but it succeeds in doing what a top-notch live album should do. Mainly to entertain the listener with the band’s most well known hits and playing their hearts out. 1968 succeed here with Live In Los Angeles as they leave the audience wanting more especially after the bombastic last song – McQueen – which is the best song on this album.

Live In Los Angeles is the perfect introduction to one of the best upcoming bands from the UK Psych Stoner Rock/Metal scene. Expect huge sounding Psych Rock, Stoner Rock and Classic Rock from 1968 but with a modern sound flowing through from start to finish.

The Lowdown

1968 return with their debut full length album - Ballads Of The Godless. The band released their debut EP to minor critical acclaim last year and that release showed how 1968 sound was very hard to define. Ballads Of The Godless sees 1968 opt for a more straightforward sound that merges elements of Psych, Classic Rock, Stoner Rock and Grunge. The primary influences for the band on this album seems to be Kyuss and Alice In Chains.

Opening track - Devilswine - has a twisted Kyuss Desert/Stoner Rock sound but with Alice In Chains style vocals and dark gloomy lyrics that has the band creating heavy FUZZ based sound. 1968 add a heavy psychedelic groove to their music and the album revels in it's gloriously heavy Grunge/Stoner Rock sound.

Second song - Screaming Sun - carries on the same psychedelic sound with the band adding soulful vocals that soon builds upto a more volatile atmosphere. You can hear elements of classic sounding Truckfighters style FUZZ but the band adds a more doomier feel with the bleak and reflective lyrics contained within the song.

Third track - Temple Of The Acidwolf - is where the album becomes way too trippy and psychedelic compared to other songs on the album. The band counter balance this with huge sounding Layne Staley inspired vocals and this allows 1968 to create the best song on the album. This is gloriously heavy and full of different progressive sounds that leave you wanting more.

Fourth song - S.I.D. - is an acoustic number that allows the band to play a more soothing style of music. The second half of the album follows the same path with 1968 focusing more on their Psychedelic Heavy Sound. The standout songs on the second half have to be: McQueen and Hunted - as this is where the band thrive creating a more distorted and drone based sound. You can even here elements of Classic Rock and Blues Rock being played on different parts of the album.

1968 manage to create highly original music of their own. Especially when they play a more distinctive psychedelic rock/metal groove. Ballads Of The Godless is an album that has something for everyone and one that has everlasting appeal across the whole Hard Rock/Heavy Metal spectrum.

If you're a fan of Psych, Classic, Desert Rock, Grunge and Stoner Rock then Ballads Of The Godless is as good as it gets. An outstanding record.

Review

1968 return after a two year absence with their new EP - Fortuna Havana. Whilst their debut EP was more of a Desert/Stoner Rock sound. Fortune Havana sees the band change their direction further by adding styles of Classic Rock, Grunge, and Psych Rock. The band are newly signed to Black Bow Records which is kinda cool as that label normally sign much heavier acts compared to 1968.

Opening track - Vorpal - has a classic Soundgarden feel matched with a powerful Stoner Rock sound. It's a very loud song with rich moments of sixties/seventies rock and the modern sounding vocals add a cold exterior. The Desert/Fuzz Rock grooves allow the band to play highly impressive dual guitar riffs.

Second track - War Dogs - is a heavier and almost doomier sounding track with heavy distorted riffs opening the song before Black Sabbath atmospherics appear. Lead vocalist - Jimi - is influenced by the Stadium Rock vocals of The Who and Black Sabbath whilst still creating new ground of his own. The song contains a high amount of feedback with screeching Thin Lizzy style dual guitars being played at a fast pace.

Third track - Duchess - sees the band stick with the winning formula they created on the opening two tracks though they start to play a grungier/blues based sound. This is my favourite song on the EP as 1968 finally create their own individual sound. The psychedelic moments will take you into "Transdimensional Space Goat" territory.

Fourth track - Fortuna Havana - is perhaps the heaviest track on the EP. Heavy Stoner/Grunge sound with the twinge of sixties Classic Rock still for everyone to hear. The song has a distorted fuzz based groove as 1968 are channelling their love for all things Led Zep. They aren't the first band to do this nor will they be the last. Though I have to admit 1968 are perhaps one of the best modern sounding Classic Rock bands I've heard in a long time.

Fortuna Havana sounds timeless and some of that credit has to goto Chris Fielding (Conan, Skyhammer Studios). Chris recorded and produced this EP. 1968 will be recording their debut album with Chris at Skyhammer Studios which will be released later this year. Based on this evidence, the band may have a few more surprises waiting for us before the year is out. Until then, Fortuna Havana is a must-have release for all fans of Classic Rock and Stoner Rock.
