Review

Doom/Grunge/Stoner Rockers Daever are really cooking on gas with their exquisite and beautifully heavy third full length record Sub Rosa which comes a year after their celebrated second album Amber Eyes. Daever have aligned themselves more closely to the Grunge musical cause for this release with the music being influenced by the likes of Alice In Chains and Soundgarden in places. Lead vocalist Pardis Latif is on truly inspired form hitting all the right emotional notes which shines superbly throughout the whole album especially on the excellent opening tracks of Catcher In The Rye and Siren Song.

The first part of the album feels like a mixture of WINDHAND and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS with abstract melodies and subtle Grunge sounds with a sense of dirt, dirge and complete angst hidden within the lyrics. Daevar add a sense of classic FUZZED OUT heaviness which allows their sludge based dynamics to shine through that develops into a collection of all out heavy atmospherics.

Sub Rosa does allow the band to expand their Sonic / Psychedelic delivery which was used sparingly on their previous records but Daever have developed this part of their music into a more important part of their creative arsenal which gives the record an unexpected Spaced Out element. The music is played at a spectacular and aggressive fast-paced at times with Pardis’s bass adding a level of grimy heaviness with Moritz Ermen Bausch’s drumming and Caspar Orfgen’s guitars adding the final powerful slab of destructive sludge force that expands into some outstanding instrumental soundscapes, melodies and grooves that have a life of their own.

Other standout tracks from the album are:  Wishing Well, Daughter, Forgotten Tale and WSMD.

Sub Rosa is at it’s most strongest when Daever focuses on a primal style of music with intense amounts of classic DOOMED OUT FUZZ with a resemblance to 90’s Alt-Metal, Grunge and Stoner Metal. The sounds can be quite emotional and abstract which sees Daevar having a maturity way beyond their years despite only being together as a band for only three years. It’s simply incredible to see what Daevar has achieved in such a short space of time by releasing three outstanding records in close proximity to each other. However,  each record has been better than the last and that’s quite a hard thing to accomplish.

The record can be quite upbeat and highly emotional when the mood needs this to be with Daevar’s masterful songwriting and storytelling skills being there for everyone to fully experience. With the band teaming up with The Lasting Dose Records and underground mastermind Jan Oberg (Earthship and GRIN) once again on recording, mixing, engineering and mastering duties then is it any wonder why Sub Rosa sounds superb throughout.

The record has the feel of a classic underground record with the right aspects of wider commercial surroundings that allows Daevar to fully breakout onto bigger and better things with this record alone.

Yeah, Daevar are without doubt one the coolest and highly talented bands to emerge from the Doom/Grunge underground scene in recent years. Sub Rosa is a definitive ALBUM OF THE YEAR contender. No question.

Cologne Based Grunge/Doom Metallers DAEVAR Announces New Album "Sub Rosa" via THE LASTING DOSE RECORDS

Deavar, the Cologne-based trio, kicks off 2025 with their third album, SUB ROSA, evolving their Doom Grunge sound with melodic uptempo bursts and lo-fi textures. Building on their previous releases, they capture the raw energy of the 2020s with intense and rat-drenched riffs, unapologetic lyrics, and a relentless DIY spirit.

While kicking off 2025 as their third year in their band's history, the Cologne-based trio Daevar announces their third studio album, SUB ROSA. Never slowing down in their musical output and live performances, Daevar continues to redefne their sound in the so called pocket of Doom Grunge. With SUB ROSA, the trio expands their cloudy lo-fi soundscape with fresh invigorating uptempo bursts and bountiful, melodic songwriting.

Building on their previous releases Delirious Rites (2023) and Amber Eyes (2024), Daevar has shaken up the stale pouch of traditional stoner doom structures by capturing the empowering and brutally honest zeitgeist of living in the 20s.

This vibrating, spinning era serves as a catalyst for the swirling melodic riffs and soaring, expansive vocals that defne the seven anthems of SUB ROSA. With Pardis Latif's blunt, unapologetic lyrics addressing crushing inequities, grotesque inhumanity, and the growth of independence—especially inspired by J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye- Caspar Orfgen elevates his riffs to a more frenetic and melodic level, while maintaining his gritty, rat-drenched roots and razor sharp, cutting solo sound. All of this is framed by the Grohl-esque drumming of Moritz, who guides you like a steady, weathered hand through the raw atmosphere of SUB ROSA, capturing the anxiety of the 2020s.

This hook-laden time capsule of SUB ROSA was once again produced and recorded by Jan Oberg at Hidden Planet Studio and released by The Lasting Dose Records. Oberg’s studio has evolved into Berlin's own "Space Needle" for the young trio, which blends the feverish grunge drive of Nirvana with the dark, brooding essence of doom.

This whole project of Daevar performing and writing music is build upon love and compassion to the friendship of Pardis, Moritz and Caspar. It goes without saying that this enthusiasm is fueled by a true workaholic mindset and a strong DIY ethic. While Caspar handles the design of all the striking artwork for their releases and merchandise - Moritz creates the visually arresting and atmospheric video content for the music videos and live visuals, inspired by Pardis' captivating lyrical storytelling and the ethereal, moodsetting, lullaby-like atmosphere the trio crafts with their music.

Teaming up with the booking agency Sound of Liberation in 2023, Deavar played the crème de la crème of genre festivals in 2024, including Freak Valley Festival, Desertfest Berlin & Antwerp, Up In Smoke, Keep It Low, Stoned From the Underground and so on.

They also seized every opportunity to perform in intimate clubs, embarking on an extensive, whirlwind tour and playing their frst international shows. In 2025, Deavar will be hitting the road once again with two European tours and appearances at festivals across the UK, Portugal, Poland, and beyond, further solidifying their reputation as one of the hardest-working and most ambitious acts in the doom pocket.

Review

Psychedelic Doom/Grunge/Stoner Metallers Daevar return with their second album Amber Eyes which has arrived quite quickly after their acclaimed debut album Delirious Rites was released back in Jan 2023. This time round, Daevar delves further into their Grunge roots for a more mature and fuzzed up offering. The album is quite dense with Sludgy Psychedelic passages and thumping bass line courtesy of vocalist/bassist Pardis Latifi.

With a more central 1990’s Shoegaze/Grunge creative attitude appearing quite strongly within Lilith’s Lullaby and Pay To Pray allowing the music being closely aligned to bands such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and A Perfect Circle with emotionally charged vocals being played against aggressive Doomed Out Stoner grooves. The sound is quite gloomy and full of bleak romanticism within the darker depths of their music which is given extra weight by the intense drums of Moritz Ermen Bausch and the bone-crunching guitars played by Caspar Orfgen.

Amber Eyes sees Daevar slowly start to add distorted levels of Doomgaze with echoes of WINDHAND appearing along the way but still allowing Pardis to deliver passionate, bewitching and intense melodic vocals. The spirit of 90’s Seattle is buried within the creative DNA of the band’s music with the contemporary Sludge/Stoner Metal heaviness the underground scene is known for.

Other songs on the album become more Progressive and dominated by first rate storytelling elements on track such as Caliban And The Witch, Amber Eyes, Lizard Eyes and Grey In Grey. These tracks show a different side to Daevar compared to their debut album, as the mood is dominated by a Post-Gothic or Post-Doom drive with heavy moments of Doom/Stoner Metal which has an almost classic Paradlise Lost flow to the album.

The album once again like their debut album has been engineered, mixed and mastered by Jan Oberg of EARTHSHIP, GRIN and Slowshine fame. Jan is also releasing Amber Eyes through his very own label - The Lasting Dose Records. The whole tone and sound of the album is an absolute joy to experience with Amber Eyes having a classic vintage sound whilst switching to a warmer and heavier sound when the Psychedelic Stoner parts appear.

Amber Eyes is another exquisite and thrilling record from Daevar that allows them to fully explore new creative and exciting opportunities in the future and lay the groundwork for future releases. Daevar may have earned themselves the right to possibly play on some of the bigger stages within the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal scene. Daevar have truly arrived with Amber Eyes.

This is another Album Of The Year contender from Deaver. Watch them soar with this release.

Doom/Grunge/Stoner Rockers DAEVAR Release New Song/Video For AMBER EYES From Upcoming New Album

With "Amber Eyes", the Cologne-based doom grunge trio Daevar recasts Nirvana’s trademark loud-quiet dynamics into slow-burning soundscapes, complemented by blistering guitar solos. Recorded through vintage cabinets and enriched by Pardis Latifi’s sultry vocals, these six compositions offer a captivating immersion in the warm gaze of a primordial she-demon.

Following their sold-out debut album, the doom grunge trio Daevar shows no signs of slowing down with their sophomore release, "Amber Eyes". Melding melody-oriented songwriting and swaying rhythms of grunge with the mysticism and languorous heaviness of doom metal, this Cologne-based trio combines the best of both worlds to forge a mesmerizing experience in their quarter-hour of music.

Since releasing their debut EP last year, Daevar has been honing their distinctive style of slow, sinister rock music. Their debut, "Delirious Rites", was praised by Metal Hammer for its mature songwriting and was characterized by a carefully constructed lo-fi dynamic. With "Amber Eyes", Daevar shifts gears, reinterpreting Nirvana’s trademark loud-quiet dynamics with slow-burning soundscapes and incendiary guitar solos.

Characterized by swaying rhythms, punchy riffs, sultry vocals, and searing guitar solos, Amber Eyes is yet another unique foray into the slow and moody for the Cologne-based doom grunge trio. Produced again by Jan Oberg at his Hidden Planet Studio in Berlin, Amber Eyes was recorded using vintage cabinets once played by the German rock legend Udo Lindenberg’s Panikorchester. This results in a warm, vintage tone that envelops the listener throughout these six extended compositions. Rarely dipping below the six-minute mark, these songs methodically enchant and beguile, drawing you into a world that spans from Tehran to Berlin and Seattle.

Driven by Moritz's economical drumming, full of Grohl-isms, and Caspar's guitar work, reminiscent of classic death-doom acts like Paradise Lost and Katatonia, these songs possess a distinct retro vibe that harmonizes perfectly with Pardis' warm, sultry voice.

We are excited to host the UK Premiere of the stunning title track Amber Eyes from the upcoming album of the same name due out on CD/DD/Vinyl via The Lasting Dose Records from March 22nd 2024.

Cologne-based heavy doom trio DAEVAR are now streaming their crushing debut album „Delirious Rites“ in its entirety!

Out on January 27, 2023 through The Lasting Dose Records!

DAEVAR are here to shake up the stoner/doom-metal scene with a menacing lo-fi sound and a fresh set ideals. Somewhere between Sleep and Paradise Lost this mysterious trio have found a pocket that is completely their own. Like a ghostly transmission through the snowy static, Delirious Rites sees the mysterious hand of DAEVAR reach out to grip the soul of whomever is ripe for the taking.

Fronted by the enigmatic Pardis (bass, vocals) and completed by Caspar (guitars) and Moritz (drums), DAEVAR serve up moody anthems inspired by what really happens in the world, rather than singing about the sweetness of the leaf or spreading eternal gloom. The young trio from Cologne have recorded five atmospheric slow-burners at Hidden Planet Studios with Jan Oberg (Grin/Earth Ship), who oversaw production and helped the band create a deceptively complex sound. Washed in an ocean of crunchy fuzz, Delirious Rites drowns the listener in a raw conflation of gritty textures and exalting melodies.

Album opener «Slowshine» is an astonishingly raw punch to the ears, ripping open the carefully produced atmospheric opening with the crushing sound of bass and guitar merging together in a haze of lo-finesse. «Leviathan» gives further insight in the intricacy of the DAEVAR sound, opening with a lone crusty guitar glued together by feedback to elementary tribal drumming of Moritz. Then, like flesh enfolding the talons of an eagle, like a hand clenching the hilt of sharpened sword, the fuzzy bass grips around the raw and gritty guitar, reinforcing it and rendering it powerful.

Driven by this punchy guitar and bass-combination, DAEVAR plough through five moody stoner-doom anthems dissecting consequential themes like enforced disappearance, sleep paralysis and female empowerment. The depth of Delirious Rites is ready to unfold itself with songs inspired by the work of political philosopher Thomas Hobbes and quotations from Iranian psychedelic rock anthems from the 70s.

"Delirious Rites“ will be available on CD and Digital formats on January 27, 2023, with a Vinyl release to follow soon.

Review

Delirious Rites is the debut album from Psych Doom/Stoner Metallers Daevar and sees the band echo the dark creative path of bands such as WINDHAND, Electric Wizard and Black Sabbath. There's a sense of emotional gloom and WEEDIAN appetite on this album that Daevar navigates with full conviction with the heavy FUZZ based Doom/Stoner grooves. The music can be slightly seedy in all the right places with the glorious vocals from lead vocalists/bassist Pardis Latifi who does bring a sassy and world weary attitude to the album.

Opening song Slowshine offers a Doom/Stoner Metal song overflowing with 90's Alt-Rock and Gothic attitude with the music still being modern by today's underground rock/metal standards. The muffled guitars have a low key effect at first before exploding into areas of LOUD sludgy attitude with the genre's use of LOW & SLOW melodic dynamics allowing Daevar breathe new life and energy into the standard DOOM & GLOOM sound. Quite subtle in places with Daevar bringing a down-tuned and distorted atmosphere to more powerful heavier levels towards the end of the song.

Second song Bloody Fingers has an Electric Wizard/WINDHAND approach with the band perhaps moving further slightly over to Psychedelic and Fuzzed Up sounds. Pardis vocals shine through yet again and offer a bewitching after thought with the OCCULT based lyrics. The album has echoes of classic 70's Doom Metal and 90's Stoner Metal working together for a richer and fuller sound. Add the Psych Doom element and Daevar starts to create music on their own hard hitting terms with some mighty fine screeching guitars working the way through for a more unsettling sound.

Third song Leila opens with a Monolord-esque jam before adding layers of distorted Fuzz and gloomy WEEDIAN riffs. The vocals are more in the background with the instrumental work having the stronger presence here but you can easily understand what is being sung on this track. The music is always DOOM based but highly melodic even with that level of noisy distorted sounds being played around everyone.  Leila offers a more OCCULT ROCK and Romantic side to Daevar with it's use of different styles they play here.

The final two songs Leviathan and Yellow Queen offer different and contrasting styles to each other with Daevar playing more Leviathan being the standout track on the album. Perhaps where they deliver their most original, heaviest and most exciting music on the album. Heavy down-tuned doomed guitars that have a drone based feel to them. Yellow Queen matches the earlier mood of the album where the RIFF rules supreme and slightly emotionally charged lyrics allows Pastis to impress yet again.

Credit should also be given to the other band members Moritz Ermen Bausch (Drums) and Caspar Orfgen (Guitars) who play their part in Daevar in releasing a wickedly spellbinding and superbly entertaining debut album. The band are helped on this album by famed underground musician Jan Oberg (Earthship, GRIN and Slowshine) who engineered, mixed and recorded this album. As it features Jan's trademark sound which does remind myself of GRIN in places. Jan's label (The Lasting Dose Records) are also releasing Delirious Rites.

Daevar have delivered the goods with Delirious Rites and no doubt the underground Doom/Stoner Metal scene will give this the love and attention it fully deserves.
