Review

Psych/Doom/Stoner Rockers Juke Cove new album Tempest sees them return with a more amplified Punk Rock sound which drifts into a Grunge based state within the seedier parts of the record. The album is rooted within a Trippy and Psychedelic mindset with the sound being surrounded by clear levels of AMPLIFIER heaviness even when Juke Cove ventures into more hallucinogenic waters especially within the opening tracks of The Path and Hypnosis.

There’s a Desert Rock core to Juke Cove’s music which has echoes of The Doors, KYUSS and Truckfighters but with an altogether more DOOM ROCK swagger with the sound being quite JAZZ ROCK based especially within the kick-ass rhythm section of Dima and Maxim on Bass and Drums respectively. Juke Cove also rely on a heavy use of Jam Rock and Improvisation which has a slight EARTHLESS influence and one that allows the band to weave Middle Eastern and sludgy guitars into the mix.

The vocals from Mateusz and Dima are from the classic Stoner Rock movement that merge with a Punk Rock style that has a wicked DIY quality to them. Tempest has a FUZZ ROCK atmosphere that drifts into heavier and laidback styles of Desert/Stoner Rock with the band never too far away from injecting a HEAVY DOOMED OUT groove into the mix.

I even admired the Alternative Rock flow that appears on the later stages of the record with some excellent “IN YOUR FACE” lyrics allowing Juke Cove to perform their own spellbinding style of Stoner Rock aggression.

Other standout tracks include: Well, Confined, Tempest, Burst and the brilliantly original final track of Tempest. These tracks see Juke Cove play different styles of Psychedelic Stoner Rock with levels of SONIC heaviness that soon merges into a more soulful mix of Doom Metal and Sludge Rock extended instrumental passages. With the band never afraid of moving into different eras of Hard Rock and Stoner Rock to get their message across to the underground masses. So don’t be surprised when you’re transported back to the 60’s Hard Rock, 70’s Proto Metal and 90’s Grunge/Stoner scenes on various parts of the album.

If you want another review to check out for Tempest, please check out the fantastic in-depth review over at the brilliant site Screaming From The Heavy Underground written by the hugely talented writer/reviewer Doomcakes.

However, back to my own review. I'll leave you with my final thoughts for Tempest. Tempest is an outstanding album on all fronts with true Punk Rock production values allowing Juke Cove to release their most impressive and riff-fuelled adventure yet.

Heavy Psychedelic Rock Trio Juke Cove Announce New Album “Tempest” and release new single: “Glow”

The Leipzig based heavy psychedelic rock trio Juke Cove announce the release of their 3rd album “Tempest” on May 3 on Interstellar Smoke Records. The album builds on the eclectic character of their previous LP “Remedy”. On “Tempest” Juke Cove skillfully blend elements of psych rock, doom, stoner rock, and punk.

“When we started writing songs for the new album, we decided not to aim at one genre, nor did we have any bands that we wanted to imitate. We wanted to let loose and see where our ideas and jamming would bring us. So, there’s a lot going on in each song, you have blues rock mixed with grunge, hypnotic doom with intense metallic hardcore or airy psychedelia with melodic punk. There are some calm moments but there are many powerful ones too. So, we felt the album has this huge chaotic, yet coherent energy, just like in a violent storm and that’s where the name comes from.” – says the band.

Listen to Juke Cove’s new track Glow here:

“Glow” is the second single from the album, after the song “Wait” which was released in February. It starts with fast paced stoner laced with thrash metal and plunges into melodic doom to smoothly transition into energetic jams in the end. Lyrically, the band addresses the feeling of impending doom: “We wrote the song after Russia invaded Ukraine, so a potential nuclear war is definitely a topic there, but so is climate change and other human-induced crises that might lead to our demise. If you listen to the song, you’ll know that we’re not entirely pessimistic though.”

Heavy Psych Stoner Rockers JUKE COVE Release New Song/Video For WAIT From Upcoming New Album

Juke Cove, a heavy psychedelic rock trio from Leipzig, Germany, drops an electrifying new single "Wait", offering the first impression of their upcoming album.

"Wait" is a musical kaleidoscope, blending stoner, desert, and psychedelic rock. The song's narrative explores themes of stagnation and change, unfolding through mellow verses, a psychedelic transition, and fuzzed-out, melodic riffs that capture the emotional turbulence within.

Watch here or below:

Wait was inspired by the feeling of getting stuck in monotony, like being in a time loop. It’s how many of us might have felt during COVID times with all the stuff shut down but it’s also inspired by personal experiences of being stuck in a job (or relationship, place etc.) one doesn’t like or feel is right. So, often the initial feeling is to kinda accept the situation and wait. But then the frustration grows…” - says the band.

Juke Cove's unique fusion of psych rock, doom, stoner, grunge, prog rock, and punk has made them a standout in the heavy underground scene since their 2019 debut. Their 2021 album “Remedy” was released in collaboration with Interstellar Smoke Records. Since then, Juke Cove have played multiple shows in Germany and Poland, opening for King Buffalo, Weedpecker, Rotor, Valley of the Sun, Mars Red Sky, and Dopelord among others. Their new album will be released later in 2024 on Interstellar Smoke Records.

Review

Heavy Psych/Stoner Rockers Juke Cove 2nd album Remedy is perhaps just that. The remedy you need to cure your Psychedelic Stoner/Doom Rock cravings. This is a gloriously hip and refreshing album with Juke Cove offering a different take on the Psych Stoner Rock sound with the band adding plenty of Doom Metal and Desert Rock spice into the mix.

The album contains 6 tracks running past the 36 minute mark and Juke Cove branches out into different elements of Psychedelic Rock with the vocals being slightly different as well. The record is consistently heavy and you feel that from the excellent opening song - Arise - with the band bringing a more darker style of Desert Rock which is set against a Post-Doom Metal landscape. The guitars are subtle and pay homage to the legendary Desert/Stoner Rock sound with Juke Cove managing to inject a more menacing atmosphere.

Second song - Swirl - starts slowly and quietly and then Juke Cove become more adventurous with their musical creative choices here with the Post-Rock grooves moving once again into heavier territories. The song becomes one of aggressive Stoner Rock/Metal sounds with the album slowly bringing in the sounds of 90s Alternative Rock/Metal and becoming a more interesting prospect because of this.

Remedy allows Juke Cove to carry on with their slightly twisted take on the Psych Stoner Rock sound with excellent musicianship from start to finish and songs such as: Remedy, Adrift and Ignite being the standout parts of the song. As the band brings a more Progressive Rock stance into the mix and makes you wonder what musical direction the album will go into next.

This is a fantastic album helped along by excellent production values and this is the type of album that will hopefully find a suitable audience within the Doom/Stoner Metal community.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
