Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Cadaver de Cabra release their debut self-titled album which provides a filth ridden style of music populated by the likes of COUGH, Electric Wizard, Weedeater, Bongzilla and EYEHATEGOD. The music is violently heavy from the very start ith Cadaver de Cabra excelling laying down the rules for listeners to follow within the superbly titled No Rules Only Sludge. Though, the band aren’t adverse into playing down-tuned passages filled with Doom/Stoner Metal aggression. The vocals are mostly delivered by groans, grunts and chants which is part of the course for an album such as this.

Cadaver de Cabra are not shy bringing a forceful distorted FUZZ METAL attitude with a superb Psychedelic effect which comes mostly through the powerful down-tuned sludgy guitars. There’s a subtle WEEDIAN sense of humour shining through within the song titles that’s perhaps inspired by the great word play of Electric Wizard and Church Of Misery. Songs such as Ketamine Zombie, Satan Blues and Cheddar Brain also offer the loudest and classic sounding Stoner based moments on the album. Though, that doesn’t stop Cadaver de Cabra employing a wealth of different musical song structures including surprising Ambient sounds and Post-Doom effects. 

The violent vocals add a vicious Progressive attitude with the band switching up their different styles of music that results in some fantastic instrumental Sludge/Stoner Guitar passages. The music can be quite frenzied with Cadaver de Cabra developing fantastic down-tuned rhythms that can be quite melodic especially on the later stages of No Rules Only Sludge and Ketamine Zombie. 

Another thing to notice is that the album was recorded live in one actual take and Cadaver de Cabra hardly put a foot wrong. As the band say about the recording of the album below:

“No overdubs, no quantization, just the band playing live, all at once. Rather than chasing perfection, we wanted to capture the feeling of four people in a room pushing their amps to the limit.”

The record is superbly realized and has a massive grime and filth based aspect which only adds to the hypnotic and gloomy experience with Cadaver de Cabra creating massive volumes of destructive FUZZ. This soon transforms into areas of trippy Psychedelic Rock and Distorted Spaced Out sounds within the other great standout tracks on the album on: Satan Blues, Cadaver de Cabra and Cheddar Brain.

I wasn’t expecting the amount of Blues Rock or Doomed Out Blues that Cadaver de Cabra include on the album which allows them to develop seedy levels of violent AMPLIFIER based distortion which fully sells the whole LIVE RECORDING aspect even further onto greater heights. WIth a fearless attitude being perhaps their “secret” weapon to entice listeners with. As when Cadaver de Cabra decided to let fly with that filth ridden style of Sludge/Stoner Metal superiority then there is no stopping them releasing drugged out sounds, grooves and riffs of the highest order.

Cadaver de Cabra’s debut album is a one creepy hallucinogenic trip worth taking with its great mix of different Sludge/Stoner Metal themes that can be quite highly atmospheric along the way. This is a great band who I hope get the most exposure they fully deserve from within the underground scene as they have real potential to become more well known in the near future.

Review

Castle is the sophomore album of WEEDIAN Metallers Mean Green and sees the band expand their heavy filthy hallucinogenic sound even further compared to their acclaimed 2023 self-titled debut album. Mean Green have always leaned more heavily into the Sludge Metal camp with sludgy passages influenced by the likes of HIGH ON FIRE, WEEDEATER and BONGZILLA. 

The added layers of Doomed Out FUZZ allows a slight Electric Wizard and Church Of Misery vibe to slowly creep in. Mean Green allows some trippy SONIC experimentation flow through their music with shades of Classic Rock Legends such as Cactus, Blue Cheer and Saint Vitus spliced throughout this vicious sounding record. The LOW & SLOW grooves have a calculated and methodical delivery to them which sees some of the heaviest AMPLIFIED surrounding melodies developing on the album thanks to tracks such as Castle, Sludge Puppy, Employee Of The Month and Cyclone.

Mean Green have really improved their technical ability in handling their Psychedelic and Space Rock creative themes as this record is more definitely more drugged out with trippier sonic passages emerging from the down tuned catacombs that the band expertly construct. With a thrilling progressive sound allowing Mean Green to move into the Southern Metal arena with epic outbursts of NOLA aggression changing the album into a faster style of delivery which is where the real magic happens. 

The vocals from Jake Helms haven’t changed much from the band’s acclaimed debut album but they have grown up with a violent delivery that oozes confidence from start to finish. Jake feels more comfortable here and he fully owns the demented front-man role he plays with absolute demented relish here. Add his intense guitar performance which allows Alex Wierback on Bass and James Matthews on Drums to fully commit to their violent rhythm section for some of the meanest, thickest and violent sounds that they brilliantly deliver.

Castle becomes a more violent Sludge Metal based journey with continuous levels of filth keeping everything brutally real with some of the thickest sonic passages you ever want to lose yourself in. The lyrics show a real violent flair which are quite close to the likes of WEEDZILLA and CHURCH OF MISERY but it fully sells the twisted vision of Castle that even allows Mean Green to indulge some mighty fine Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metal musical solos along the way that would make MASTODON green with envy!!!

Mean Green have expertly avoided the dreaded sophomore / second album curse with Castle. As this record alone feels like a statement of intent from the band that they mean business and they’re going to be around for a very long time to come. With a non-stop supply of WEEDIAN grooves to drown your hearing with, Mean Green have come of age with this outstanding record. Accept no substitute, these guys are the real fucking deal.

Sludgers Mean Green drop new single "Employee Of The Month" and a ripping live cover video of "War Pigs"

Following lead single "Wasteland", Mean Green have just dropped "Employee Of The Month", a crusher the band hold close to their hearts.

The band states, "[former bandmate] Alex wrote this one. It meant a lot to him and us. Unfortunately he’s not playing with us for the time being, but he may return one day. This one goes out to him."

Adds guitarist/vocalist Jake Helms, "The solo that starts at 4:20 (nice) has a good story behind it. While recording the album we were away from home for a week. On the tail end of recording, one night my girlfriend who lived with me called me up and said she was leaving and taking my dog with her. The solo you hear in the song is the first take of the session the next morning straight off the dome, she’s gone but I kept my fucking dog (his name is Riff). So thanks for the inspiration behind that one Emily.”

War Pigs

Not ones to rest easy, in addition to Castle's new riffs Mean Green have also just dropped a live recording of an extra nasty cover of "War Pigs".

While on tour and wanting to pay tribute to the late Ozzy, the band put together a sludged-out take on "War Pigs". The last piece of the puzzle fell into place when roadie Logan Felder, also of North Carolina blackened crust punks VRAS, hopped on vocals, and lightning in a bottle was captured.

Review

Transilvanian Munchies is the third full length album from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Bong Wizard and it continues the great work the band achieved on their excellent second album Vulgar Display Of Flower. Bong Wizard is known to include a great mix of black comedic humour into their music which they do throughout this album which is inspired by the likes of Church Of Misery, BONGZILLA and WEEDEATER. The music itself is a mix of down-tuned and aggressive strains of WEEDIAN METAL that’s laced with some elements of Black Metal along the way though not too much as the band are still playing those “POT” heavy melodies.

There is a more aggressive level of music coming from Bong Wizard compared to their previous albums with the band drawing influence from the likes of CONAN, Electric Wizard and even The Melvins at times. The music can be quite frantic with Bong Wizard changing to a Punk Metal style especially on the shorter tracks such as Spellbound By The Devil’s Lettuce for one.

Sometimes Bong Wizard can even be quite progressive with their music by playing longer instrumental passages which gives their music a heavier, distorted and gloomy sound but still packing those classic levels of evil FUZZ building up from the speakers. The album really shines when Bong Wizard includes some classic Proto-Doom along the way which just amps up the creepy atmosphere with that “LOW & SLOW” musical delivery offering violent thrills and spills along the way. 

Some folks may complain that there’s nothing really groundbreaking to this album and we’ve heard this all before. That may be true to a point but that hasn't stopped thousands of other bands releasing similar themed albums over the years and still achieving critical and commercial success along the way. Bong Wizard are fucking excellent at what they do and they deliver that time and time again on tracks such as: Bongblåst, Spellbound By The Devils Lettuce, Transylvanian Munchies, Inno A Sativa and I Am The Bong Wizards.

You have to give the band credit for taking the titles of some well known BLACK METAL tracks and giving the whole thing a STONER METAL makeover with great lyrics to match. The lyrics are superbly funny throughout with Bong Wizard exploring the folklore of the BLACK METAL and WEEDIAN METAL scenes with genuine love and affection. The music maybe brutal at times but the razor sharp wit comes straight from the heart.

Transilvanian Munchies is a record that also has a deeply unflinching side and that’s thanks to the amazing vocals that’s contained throughout. These vocals are violent with guttural screams being provided by Justin Liles and Ronny Spera as they deliver with a nightmarish intensity that would make this a great album to be released closer to the HALLOWEEN season. 

Bong Wizard also makes great use of different sound effects, trippy soundscapes and vivid distorted themes which taps into the HORROR and OCCULT aspect of the DOOM METAL scene. There’s a seedy Seventies “GRINDHOUSE” attitude appearing which elevates the levels of volumes into dangerous territory that will sure give your HEARING and SPEAKERS a brutal workout from start to finish.

Transilvanian Munchies is a superbly produced album where you know it could only arrive from the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal underground scene. With a never-ending supply of DANK based grooves, Bong Wizard provides a masterclass of WEEDIAN and DOPE METAL grooves which will have you coming back for more. This album has easily claimed a place on my “BEST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR” and it’s not hard to see why.

Review

Funeral Wounds is the debut release from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Ganar Fvzz who take influence from the likes of Church Of Misery, Electric Wizard, BONGZILLA and WEEDEATER with a fast-paced violent FUZZ METAL energy being present throughout. This isn’t the most original music you’ll hear but if you’re a dedicated follower or practitioner of the LOW & SLOW and DISTORTED AMPLIFIER movement then you’ll find much to enjoy here.

There are some epic sludgy grooves that edges Ganar Fvzz to the likes of High On Fire in places which you can hear on the superb opening tracks of Burn The Badge and Cult Shit. The EP is quite forthright with the song titles and Doom Metal imagery that appears within the lyrics which is made even more threatening by the excellent lead vocals.

The vocals are quite harsh but very easy to understand. The seedy Sludge/Stoner Metal landscape soon goes fully into WEEDIAN territory where the music becomes heavier, aggressive and faster which allows everything to flow with a more dominant DOOM & GLOOM energy on the later stages of the record.

Funeral Wounds is quite a nasty record but it’s one with the usual Stoner Metal charm where the music is quite direct with a sludgy and fuzzed up metal attitude allowing the band to generate some epic riffs that fill the atmosphere with pure OCCULT based tension. The LOW & SLOW approach wins the day though especially on tracks Under The Curse, We Gonna Die and the sublime title track which allows the EP to end on a quite dramatic and droned out finish.

Funeral Wounds is a solid and highly satisfactory EP from the Indonesian Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal scene and I’m hoping to hear more great records from that part of the world especially if they’re musically and technically impressive as Ganar Fvzz.

The record is a punishing and heavy melodic mix of Psych, Doom, Sludge, Stoner, Fuzz and no fucks given melodic attitude. TONS have really transformed into a more mature and trippy style of WEEDIAN flavour compared to their previous albums. However, their trademark style of black comedic humour is still reigning amok in the background that generates huge laughs along the way.

The music itself is once again powered through heavy down-tuned instrumental psychedelic and fuzzed up drugged inducing passages which sees slight influences such as Church Of Misery, WEEDEATER and BONGZILLA being heard from time to time.

The opening track of Shirley Temple Ball is a drug laced musical odyssey with harsh vocals and music that’s been filtered through the eye of a rusty and sludge induced needle with a frantic Hardcore Punk and Spaced Out attitude being the creative glue that holds everything together. The atmosphere and attitude can be quite vicious which allows the record to fully stand on its creative merits especially when TONS start using classic movie soundclips for the first time on the record. 

You can expect soundclips from the likes of Big Trouble In Little China and Top Secret within the album with a few cool more being added along the way. TONS start moving between LOW & SLOW grooves to a more fast-paced Sludge Metal onslaught on the majority of the tracks. There’s some fantastic social satire being laid down within the excellent lyrics which TONS have been complete masters at especially on tracks on Hangover The Top, Lost In Plantation and The Bing Bong Theory. 

You can see from the brilliantly titled song titles there’s some great word play which will only endear the band even more to the listener. The music always moves to the caustic style of Thrash, Sludge and NOLA based energy whilst TONS always manage to find a way to move themselves closer to the Space Rock and Psych Rock astral planes that comes within the most unexpected of places.

Stoned Villains is brilliantly outlandish and surreal the best times which TONS make no apologies for. This is their fourth album and the band have perfected their own great flavour of WEEDIAN METAL that you can easily be considered MASTERS of the actual scene now along with WEEDEATER and BONGZILLA.

TONS never take themselves too seriously and just have fun with their music where the message maybe completely lost under massive amounts of green smoke. The music has some classic Hardcore Punk influences and musical vices bursting from the seams which keeps everything grounded. TONS have a great storytelling narrative running throughout Stoned Villains which does allow the listener to shout angrily at the world in perfect unison which you’ll be doing along the way like I did.

The production is top-notch with this record being TONS strongest recorded effort to date especially within the final two tracks of Darth Vaper and Rollercoaster Diet Bombo. These two tracks perfectly capture TONS at their most outrageous, grounded and completely free with some of the heaviest, freakiest, dirtiest and heaviest sounds on the whole record. Though, Stoned Villains as a whole is a brilliant experience that takes you into some highly unexpected places that leave you wanting more and then some. Though, that could be the “MUSICAL MUNCHIES” kicking in!!!!

TONS have once again released another ALBUM OF THE YEAR contender with Stoned Villains and with this being released on Heavy Psych Sounds then you have one of the most complete and perfect “WEEDIAN” musical packages you’ll experience all year.

Exclusive Song/Video Premiere For Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers TONS Explosive New Song LOST IN PLANTATION

Your favorite weed sludgers are ready to come back with their fourth studio album, the aptly titled "Stoned Villains," out in April on your beloved Heavy Psych Sounds Records. The band's distinctive sound emerges immediately after the first listen: seven tracks of heavy, sulfurous doom-sludge, with influences ranging from the '90s to Turin-inspired hardcore punk, the scene in which our "villains" were formed and raised. Heavy and cutting guitars, a seismic rhythm section, and Gingerzilla's voice barking out ungraceful tales of weed abuse and uncontrolled eating. The song titles perfectly describe Tons: a band that doesn't take itself too seriously and uses irony as its strong point. "Stoned Villains" was recorded and mixed in Turin by Danilo "Dano" Battocchio at Deepest Sea Studio and mastered by James Plotkin. Enjoy!

The Lowdown

Forged in 2009 by members of the Turin hardcore scene (The Redrum, Lama Tematica, NoInfo), Tons deliberately traded breakneck speed for a colossus-sized, slow-motion onslaught — sludgy-as-fuck, caustic and laced with wry weed wisdom and local esoteric mystique.

From their 2012 debut, Musineè Doom Session, Volume 1, to the punishing Filthy Flowers of Doom (2018) and the evil and acerbic Hashension (2022), Tons has never taken a single prisoner. The unstoppable foursome has shared stages with iconic acts such as Bongzilla, Unsane, Napalm Death and Church Of Misery, and relentlessly stormed festivals across the continent (Desertfest, Sonic Blast, Frantic Fest, Venezia Hardcore, HPS Fest).

Blasting forth with a new player behind the kit, Tons is ready to crank it up to maximum sludge levels again with their fourth album Stoned Villains, due out in the spring of 2026 and followed by a promotional Japanese tour in May. 

The album was recorded and mixed in Turin by Danilo "Dano" Battocchio at Deepest Sea Studio and mastered by James Plotkin, with artwork and graphics by Steuso.
