Review

Z-Cocoon is the solo project by Marc Zolla. A multi-instrumentalist from Montreal, Quebec who is quite a talented musician with a flair for creating riff-driven music. Especially if you dig genres such as Grunge, Hard Rock, Classic Rock and Stoner Rock.

Z-Cocoon new EP – Dark – feel influenced by Alice In Chains especially on the excellent opening song It’s No Fun. The track offers 3 minutes of classic sounding Alice In Chains ideas and riffs with a Stoner Rock drive appearing on certain stages of the song. Marc does show his appreciation for other areas of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. This all builds up to an adventurous and riff-driven style of music that has a lot going for it.

Second song – Just Tell Me – has an “Audioslave” quality to it with Marc’s vocals and some of the music that appears at the start. However, Marc switches things up a bit and plays some classic “Hard Rock” melodies and superb vocals for the standout song on the EP. The song is a mixture of Grunge, Psych Rock and Stoner Rock sounds and will impress fans who dig those genres of music.

Third song – Wasting My Time – is a more Blues Rock and Funk based offering with Marc switching creative gears yet again. It’s a very cool song but doesn’t have the blistering hard-rock energy of the previous songs but it’s good to see Marc offering something different and I did enjoy his vocals more on this track.

Overall, Dark is another hugely entertaining release from Z-Cocoon and I’ll be excited to hear what Marc has in store for us all on his next release.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
