Review
Under The Blood Moon is the second album from Doom/Stoner Metal riff-specialists Mother Iron Horse and continues the themes heard on their 2019 debut album but with a more sleazy and direct vibe. The high energy classic hard rock grooves and kick-ass vocals are back with attitude sprawling through the album. Where the debut album featured grooves sounding like and inspired by bands such as Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath, Uncle Acid and even High On Fire. This record sees the band starting again with a new found creative approach with a sound that’s very much of their own doing and this allows the band to ultimately release a much more satisfying album compared to their debut album which I rate very highly indeed.
The eight songs held here follow the same template to each other but it’s still an exciting blend of Sludge based Doom/Stoner Metal with Sleazy backdrops and a twinge of Occult Rock. The grooves are bang on point with meaty aggression heard throughout the excellent three opening songs - The Devil’s Work, The Witches and Old Man Satan leaving a fantastic Psychedelic Doom Rebellion amongst the standard Occult Rock sound. The vocals are loud, aggressive and downright mean in places but still with a warm presence to gain an emotional connection to the album.
The lyrics are most DEFINITELY Doom based while the music flirts between Sludge/Stoner Metal DOMINANCE with a powerful drive allowing Mother Iron Horse pay huge respect to Black Sabbath with the “SABBATH” vibe in mighty attendance on the later stages of the album. There’s a lot of AMPLIFIER DISTORTION that will give your hearing a POUNDING.
Other standout tracks are: Nocturnal Eternal, Samhain Dawn and Mass At Dungeon Rock.
Under The Blood Moon is the band’s first release for the mighty Ripple Music as Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rob Blasko signed them to the label. So it’s good enough for Rob and Ripple Music then it should be good enough for you all to check out. Being signed to Ripple Music is a sign of quality. You know what you get when it’s a Ripple Music release.
Mother Iron Horse have released an album that’s packed with creative flair and delicious heavy grooves to make them stand out from the crowd.
Excellent and Highly Recommended.
