Review

Angolan Heavy Metallers Kishi return with their new EP Khoas and sees the band bring a more extreme approach to their stylish blend of Doom Metal and Stoner Metal. Throwing in elements of Thrash, Punk, Death Metal and Sludge Metal. Inspired by bands such as Sepultura, Metallica and Slayer but given a Doom/Stoner Metal makeover with furious break-beats and subtle hints of Melodic Rock which is ever present within the opening song 69 Feiticeiros e 14 Bruxas.

Quite surreal and odd in places but ultimately satisfying with its groovy style of different Hard Rock and Heavy Metal themes. I can’t comment on the lyrical content as the band sing in their own language for this track but the vocals are on the harsher side of life but Mankav puts in a fine vocal performance which can be more Punk based on certain stages of the track.

Second song Dead Last Rumbled is a more Punk Rock/Death And Roll variation of Sludge/Stoner Metal with a mighty gloomy atmosphere with spiky vocals leading the way. The song does have a serious tone with the lyrics the band have written for this track and the switching from Extreme Metal to the more recognisable Stoner passages is quite exciting to hear.

Third song Kill The Beast When It’s Wounded has more of a Sludgier and Psychedelic sound compared to the other tracks of the album with Kishi also focusing upon their Doom Metal aspect of their music. Throw in the Thrash Metal aesthetics and Kishi offers the most straightforward and perhaps the standout track on the album. When the band starts playing a more riff-centric style of music then Kishi became quite an exciting band in their own right.

The final two songs Pornographic Strategy and Mona Caxito allow Kishi the chance to flex their Doom Metal creative talents for a meatier and aggressive sound where the guitars offer plenty of RIFFS and HOOKS that move effortlessly between the boundaries of Extreme Metal and Underground sounds for a more catchier style of music.

Khaos offers a welcoming and refreshing change of pace and style for the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal underground scene with its unapologetic style of grooves and richly fascinating creative sounds as well.

This is one mighty fine trip into the heavier depths of the underground scene and I’m excited to hear more from Kishi in the future.
