Review

Demonstration is the underground classic Doom/Stoner Metal album from Ladies Of Leisure. Perhaps not getting the recognition it fully deserved back in 2014 when it was released upon the world. The album is getting a long overdue 7 inch and CD physical release.

The sound is powered by Seventies Proto-Doom, Hard Rock, Proto-Metal and aggressive Stoner Rock hooks. There is a meaty sideline of Blues Rock, Psych and Fuzz Rock energy which has a great Space Rock sound that is all the range these days so this is quite forward thinking especially on tracks such as Poison, UDS 2 - Liquid Maze and Joblin’s Demise.

Ladies Of Leisure provide filthy melodies and gritty sludgy grooves which feels like The Obsessed jamming with FU MANCHU but with a ferocious Punk Rock sound that isn’t afraid to get down and dirty when the music becomes way over distorted. The whole record feels part of the underground Stoner Rock scene that was perhaps on the rise back in 2014 and it’s a damn shame that Ladies Of Leisure never received the attention they truly deserved as this album is never afraid of its Heavy Metal heritage.

The music constantly feels over-done and quite rushed at times but that’s part of the charm with Ladies Of Leisure tapping right into their Punk Rock, Doom Metal and Stoner Rock identity with a REBELLIOUS and LONER attitude generating in some pretty intense Psychedelic instrumental passages along the way.

Demonstration is an underground classic of the Doom/Stoner Metal scene and it’s about time this album should get the love, respect and admiration it truly deserves. If you’re into the likes of The Obsessed, FU MANCHU, KYUSS and MONSTER MAGNET then you need to check out these seedy OUTLAW RIFFSTERS OF THE NIGHT.

As this album is an undiscovered gem!!!.

Review

Garage/Scuzz/Stoner Rockers LáGoon return with their latest album Forget What You Heard which sees the band performing in loud and highly unapologetic fashion. The whole record feels like LáGoon have finally found their true calling in the Stoner Rock scene with their blend of Punk, Fuzz, Garage Rock, Psych, Doom and Scuzzy melodies. This is their most confident and highly entertaining record to date with some epic nods of FU MANCHU riff loving amplified worship but with LáGoon’s own great style of music still being heard.

These tracks have been released and recorded differently over the years but these are perhaps the most definitive edition of the tracks and how they're meant to sound. This is the perfect starting point for newcomers to become a fan of this great band.

Opening track Kill The Messenger has some spiky demented lyrics and pure distorted mayhem developing within the music. It’s very stripped back and has a classic Nineties Stoner Rock attitude which becomes one of the best themes from the album. There’s some Punk Rock sounds being played at an relentless fast pace which has been a staple of LáGoon’s music from the very start. It’s a great way to open the album with.

Second track You Tried (We Lied)  has a sublime MELVINS based energy with LáGoon approaching that FUZZY / Scuzz Punk attitude once more. There’s some influences from the likes of Dinosaur Jr and The Ramones emerging from the Punk Rock wastelands but it’s the screeching psychedelics and stripped back Garage Rock mechanics that makes the song work so superbly well.

Third track Draculove is a Doom Punk offering with LáGoon having some fun with the whole Proto-Metal theme of the track. It’s quite a bouncy little number with a subtle manic energy and playful lyrics that plays right into the classic “DRACULA” folklore. Maybe a bit too “radio friendly” at times but it’s refreshingly hip and quite clever with the simply played melodies that brings a huge amount of fun to the album.

The next two tracks Father Of Death and Wheel Bite sees LáGoon return to the playful surroundings of the opening tracks with a certain Sludgier environment developing with some socially aware lyrics. This is LáGoon being socially aware and having some gloomy fun at the same time especially on Father Of Death. The music has a turbo-charged appearance that’s primed to explode on musical impact. The lo-fi surroundings allows the songs to breath organically especially on Wheel Bite.

One of the main strengths about LáGoon and this album in general is how the band don’t give a fuck about Progressive themes at all. This is Stoner Rock music played in it’s purest form where the main mission is JUST TO GET SHIT DONE and leave you superbly entertained which they achieve with flying colours within the excellent two final two tracks Shake Fast, Play Loud and Smoke And Flesh.

The songs allows LáGoon to close the album playing snarling Punk Rock grooves that are almost quite anthemic with that seedy and dirty Psychedelic attitude playing some of the best music on the album.

Forget What You Heard is another great record from LáGoon who are fastly becoming one of the standout Stoner Rock acts from the infamous Portland underground Heavy Rock scene.

Problem With Dragons - Permian (Album Review)

Release Date: September 11th 2026. Record Label: Self Released. Format: CD/DD/Vinyl

Permian - Tracklist

1.Deeply Divided 02:34

2.The Age of Sin

3.And All Are Anointed by God

4.Suspended

5.Lone Rider

6.Permian 06:32

7.Thine Right Eye

8.This Will Not End Peacefully

9.Reset The Future

Review

Problem With Dragons offer another warped slice of modern Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal with Prog Metal movements on their latest record Permian. This gives the band the freedom to do whatever they want as they continue that great run of developing slightly off-beat fractured songs that have a killer FAITH NO MORE influence to them. The band add a heavier downbeat style to their music with freaky psychedelic grooves that transform into a sublime Industrial Doomed Out theme which has been a major aspect of their music for the last decade or so.

Problem WIth Dragons adds free-flowing sonic and ambient beats along the way as Permian taps right into a classic Science Fiction feel compared to their previous albums. The sludgy sounds are quite anthemic with a frightening real life focus coming into play on tracks such as Deeply Divided, The Age Of Sin and And All Are Anointed by God setting the scene for a sudden shift into real Apocalyptic surroundings.

Some sections of the album once again sees Problem With Dragons merge Prog Metal ideology against the modern Sludge/Stoner Metal melodies where things feel quite disjointed and switched off from the modern day world. The whole thing is wonderfully fucking weird which isn’t a big shock to me but it’s how dark Problem With Dragons have become with some of the yrics contained on the album and also how experimental they are with certain sound effects.

There is a frenzied and pissed off approach with how the band deliver their music as well by applying a fuzz metal structure to the album with a violent COSMIC DOOM story line becoming more real with each passing moment. However, the guys always allow the listener to be fully part of the whole experience which becomes more powerful within the down-tuned, stripped back and droned out soundscapes that offer a trippy nightmarish presence to fully emerge from behind the scenes.

The ELECTRONIC and GLITCHY beats can be quite jarring and unsettling but that’s possibly the point why they’ve been included here as Problem With Dragons create a disturbing experience within the intense riff-centric Sludge/Stoner Metal grooves that appear here. There’s also some wicked DOOM-POP and RADIO FRIENDLY METAL sounding parts included on this record which is one of my favourite aspects on the whole album.

Permian feels like a message is being sent into the COSMOS from humanity after it’s completely destroyed itself with each song telling the listener what happened. The end result is very non-linear and is perhaps down to the listener’s imagination to fully piece everything together. If you’re only here for the music itself then Problem With Dragons never disappoint in that score especially if you’re a fan of the likes of MASTODON, BARONESS, SOUNDGARDEN, FAITH NO MORE and MONSTER MAGNET.

The record is an extraordinary “AUDIO” experience as there’s not many bands like Problem With Dragons who can create different PSYCHEDELIC and SPACED OUT frequencies that are set against a backdrop of classic WEEDIAN grooves. The lyrics and vocals are equally inventive which once again has been a major part of the band’s success over the years especially on tracks Suspended, Lone Rider, Permian, Thine Right Eye and Reset The Future.

Some folks may be put off by the sheer schizophrenic nature of how the music is delivered but that's a great thing about Problem With Dragons, as they're always thinking outside the box where not many bands can possibly create or fully touch.

Problem With Dragons have delivered the goods yet again with another first rate and classic sounding record that’s full of brilliant songs from start to finish that manages to bring something cool and unique to the party.

Review

In Sanity is the debut album from Doom/Sludge Stoner Metallers STUIK who are formed with ex-members of Splendidula and Solenoid with the band influenced by the likes of Red Fang, Mastodon and KYUSS but with a gloomier Alt Rock sound. The mood is quite different to Splendidula and Solenoid but they do keep similar gloomier themes on their debut album but with more focus on a great way of delivering intense and stripped back riffs.

STUIK employ similar Progressive melodies used by the likes of Mastodon and Baroness but break out into different Psychedelic passages with KYUSS being a great influence for the band to weave that gloomy Desert/Stoner Rock sound into the mix. The use of subtle Hard Rock, Punk and Sludge Rock dimensions is applied very early on within the album on tracks such as All The Fuzz, Feel Alive and Foolishness.

There are moments of DOOM & GLOOM and Shoegaze vibes emerging within the emotionally charged vocals that are delivered by Pieter Houben and Jana Dutohlav that form a winning combination when they both appear on the same track(s) contained on the album.

With a melodic backdrop of slow-paced grooves being used sparingly and to great effect before STUIK channel that modern day Progressive Sludge/Stoner Rock into a faster style of music that gives complete focus for the band to play heavier sounds and write emotionally charged vocals to match. The whole thing never feels forced and STUIK never outstay their welcome as they develop some intriguing and well-constructed songs throughout which allows them to play aggressive soundscapes with a thumping metallic energy.

STUIK becomes ever more confident with each passing track as the harsh Desert Rock environment allows the listener to front and centre of the action on tracks such as Roots, Stilted, Loosen The Noose, In Sanity We Trust and ‘Alone and Alive’. There’s a great style of Post-Doom and Psychedelic heaviness that appear within these tracks that makes you feel that STUIK have been around for yours and not delivering their debut album.

The later stages of In Sanity does have a distinct Grunge appearance that gives this album a seedy tone whilst elevating the FUZZIER and PUNK sounds to become the most soulful of the record. STUIK could have played some faster based grooves and melodies within the quieter moments of the album. However, I understand why they took this creative choice and it does perhaps give the album a more satisfying and emotional conclusion.

STUIK have still managed to deliver a superbly realized debut album that should no doubt allow them to make a great impression within the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal scene. In Sanity is an unexpected sludgy and doomed out delight from beginning to end.

Review

A Thousand Suns is the seventh full length album from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal collective Titanosaur which is the creative project from Geoff Saavedra. Geoff has experienced a few tough years recently as he underwent a heart transplant back in 2024. Now, Geoff is on the road to recovery where he’s released his heaviest and most emotionally involved record yet. The end result is a glorious and unapologetic mix of Doom, Sludge, Stoner, Psych, Grunge and Punk with a destructive quality which fully taps into the some cosmic gloomy themes along the way.

Geoff’s vocals and lyrical insight are sharp as ever with a fast-paced narrative forming from the very start as this record has a classic Heavy Metal identity which is mostly used through the production side of things. You can hear influences such as High On Fire, Motorhead, Monster Magnet, Pantera and Metallica. The sludgy grooves come right at you at an astonishing pace which gives Titanosaur a violent riff-fuelled energy which is delivered with such ferocity where you may need a few breaks along the way.

The songs follow a similar structure to each other but you know what you’re getting as Titanosaur feels like they’re exorcising a few personal demons they’ve experienced over the last few years but also with Geoff celebrating and highlighting that he's still around to tell the tale. Despite the rough and ready exterior of the Sludge/Stoner Metal melodies, the album does have some emotionally charged lyrics hidden deep within its muscular delivery on tracks such as: My Destroyer, This Hell, Holding On To The Light and A Thousand Suns being the standout tracks on the first half of the album.

Titanosaur moves between the multiple eras of Classic Hard Rock and modern day Heavy Metal with real precision where the different DOOM & GLOOM atmospherics opens the album into different layers of real heaviness. The record works best when Titanosaur aims for a simpler musical style which forces a heavier Sludge/Stoner Metal to appear which becomes one of the albums main strengths especially on the second half of the album.

A Thousand Suns also has some deft experimental movements which Geoff has spliced throughout the album which allows for a more spaced out environment to develop for some real groove laden “HEAD BANGING” moments.

Other great tracks to check out are: Colossus, Fire In The Hole, Static and Fires Blazing.

Titanosaur once again truly delivers the goods with another superb record that proves why they're one of the most essential “solo” acts we currently have in the underground scene right now.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Scuzz n' fuzz garage doomers LáGoon announce new album Forget What You Heard, out September 18th

Coming September 18th, get your skate, scuzz, and stoner rock fix with new album Forget What You Heard, serving up seven tracks of riffs and attitude.

You'll likely recognize the names of most of these songs if you've been listening to us since the beginning. LáGoon is a heavy riffing trio from Portland, Oregon that blends elements of punk, garage rock, doom, and stoner rock. They have released a large catalog of music, but are best known for their high energy shows.

The band has toured extensively and played with a number of notable bands including Nebula, Matt Pike vs the Automaton, Duel, Wo Fat, Mos Generator, and Sasquatch to name a few.

Doomed and Stoned best describes the band as “…an odd duck, with the head of The Stooges, the fuzzed up body of Dead Moon, the feet of The Gun Club, the soul of Electric Wizard and the guts of Nirvana”.

As always, the band's next plans include playing live as much as possible. They're also already working on new music for LáGoon and their other garagegaze project, OOPSY DAZEY.

The new album Forget What You Heard drops September 18th on vinyl via Interstellar Smoke Records and cassette via Evil Noise Recordings. Dig it.

Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers Rust Lords bring a Hardcore Punk flavour to their latest EP - Suffer Eternal. There’s even a healthy dose of Crossover Thrash that gives Rust Lords a vibrant and seedy energy with their blend of lo-fi heavy grooves. The EP is superbly aggressive from the start with the Hardcore Punk vocals from Kyle Roy which has a classic Crossover influence running throughout. The music itself is superbly technical when the fast-paced melodies appear on different sections of the record.

Rust Lords like to play around with the rules and conventions of the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal scenes they closely align themselves to. As the music goes through many different transformations which gives Suffer Eternal quite a highly original approach with that great Hardcore Punk and Doom Metal sound that reminds me of Saint Vitus and Corrosion Of Conformity on tracks such as Louis, Bubba, Jack and Adrian.

The EP lasts for around twenty minutes but Rust Lords employ a great style of Doom Metal and Stoner Metal that manages to be quite playful and superbly hard-hitting along the way. When the band find their Psychedelic swagger, the EP becomes very trippy and self aware with a delicious level of FUZZ METAL that really makes the record really standout. You start to notice the fast-paced riffs even more with some fast-paced Thrash Metal beats that should appeal to fans of Motorhead and High On Fire with some great riff-centric passages moving into areas of Distorted based heaviness.

Suffer Eternal could have easily done with another song as everything suddenly ends once Rust Lords are fully in their musical element but the guys show a lot of promise here which should allow them to build a loyal following within the underground scene. Check this superb EP when you have the time and be prepared for a highly unapologetic style of aggressive Doom/Stoner Metal that takes no prisoners when everything is said and done.

4.Don't Think (Your Life Away) 05:10

7.Burning Soul 03:27

8.Whispering Winds 05:21

Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers Flamebearer return with their second album Igniter which continues the past paced sounds first heard on their 2024 debut album Brazen. That record allowed Flamebearer to spread their gospel of Stoner Metal that was full of Hard Rock, Punk, Doom and even Glam Metal. With a sound closer to the likes of Orange Goblin, CLUTCH, KISS, Black Sabbath and KYUSS that even had some FUZZ ROCK appearing to hold everything together.

Igniter sees the band sticking more closely to Orange Goblin and KISS For this record whilst developing their own action packed sound. The sound has a heavier Punk Rock vibe which develops very early on throughout tracks such as Electric Haze, Falling Down and Something Going On where Flamebearer adds a vibrant NOLA and Sludge Rock aspect to their music. The Punk Rock swagger comes mostly through the superb vocals and pissed off lyrics that’s laid down throughout the whole album.

Flamebearer music works best when they throw caution to the wind and embrace that legendary Eighties Heavy Metal spirit that ultimately rules the roost for this album to genuinely thrive which the majority of the album generates the real excitement. However, that doesn’t stop Flamebearer venturing into the Doomed Out water of Stoner Metal with a dangerous melodic attitude forming within other tracks held on the album.

The album does contain looser production values compared to their debut album Brazen but this has a more aggressive sound that gives Igniter a real Heavy Metal attitude with that rebellious Punk Rock spirit appearing on the standout tracks on the album such as Something Going On, Don’t Think (Your Life Away), Sense Of Freedom and Whispering Winds.

These tracks allow Flamebearer to be gloriously OVER THE TOP with how they deliver their music with outlandish vocals to match. There’s a devilish sense of fun being delivered through the mighty walls of AMPLIFIED AGGRESSION that should give your hearing a proper HEAVY METAL workout.

Igniter is a superbly entertaining record. It’s not the most original record you’ll ever hear but Flamebearer have delivered an album that’s packed full of great songs that should get the old-school metalheads headbanging and fists pumping in the air in no time at all.

Review

Tales Of The Wyldewood Green is the debut album of Heavy Psych Instrumental Rockers The Wyldewood Green and it’s one of the freakiest, psychedelic and far-out records I’ve had the pleasure to listen to this year. This record fully explores the legendary sounds of the Sixties and Seventies Rock scene where the band play music built upon the rhythms of Surf Rock, Heavy Psych, Funk, Punk Rock, Garage Rock, Blues Rock, Classic Rock, Proto-Rock and shades of Stoner Rock.

The Wyldewood Green music is driven by a funk driven Hammond and Organ instrumental score which allows the other areas of Heavy Psych to perfectly drift into your subconscious where the mood even transforms into pure JAZZ ROCK and LIZARD LOUNGE music. Though, the real musical weapon of choice that The Wyldewood Green band explores is classic movie soundtracks. As this record has a classic hipster sound with the jazzy beats and cool intricate psychedelic melodies that wouldn’t go amiss from a Sixties Heist Movie or even a kitschy rom-com. Though, the record does show it’s more dangerous side by employing a Classic Hard Rock style inspired by the likes of The Who, Deep Purple, The Doors and The Byrds.

With some distorted Stoner-ish guitars appearing along the way, it’s good to see The Wyldewood Green are still keen to add small snippets of modern Stoner Rock soundwaves which gives Tales Of The Wyldewood Green a heightened sense of trippy realism. The album may not be for everyone but if you’re in the mood for some great Heavy Psychedelic beats and sounds that will leave your mind feeling the effects of one of the most glorious LCD trips you’ll ever take without the need for taking that powerful hallucinogenic drug.

The songs are brilliantly written with their own highly individual identity which adds a dreamlike effect on the later stages of the record with The Wyldewood Green even deploying into calmer and soulful Post-Rock swagger. The songwriting is on another level even for an instrumental record as this album does do something different with the whole Instrumental Rock template.

Standout tracks on the album are: Spires, The Mindsplitter, Carnaby Nights, Maldedo, Tangerine Whiskey, The Queenmaker and Murder In The Electric Cathedral. These are the tracks that I found the most engaging on a personal level and which impressed how daringly heavy the record becomes despite this being quite a laid back album for the most part.

Tales Of The Wyldewood Green is an absolute revelation from start to finish with the band creating and playing sounds that shouldn’t really work so well. However, here we are with a debut album that has a great MAVERICK attitude where you can really say that The Wyldewood are true originals which their debut album proves time and time again.
