Review

Grunge/Doom/Stoner Metallers Lamassu refined their hybrid “GRUNGE” sound on their stunning 2023 album Made Of Dust. The record was quite bleak and opaque with the band leaning into their Post-Doom and Post-Metal creative persona which allowed the album to be quite uncompromising whilst still maintaining a kick-ass STONER METAL attitude.

Lamassu have returned with GUNS, the new song from their upcoming “untitled” new album which dials back the Post-Doom perspective and offers a more classic GRUNGIER attitude that fans of Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, HELMET and Stone Temple Pilots will truly appreciate.

The small bursts of Doomed Out Stoner Rock/Metal energy works amazingly with the solid and epic sounding SPACE ROCK foundations that allows Lamassu to build up an impressive array of Sludge Rock attitudes which can easily be comparable to CAVE IN for small moments on the later stages of the track.

Guns does see Lamassu operate with a LESS IS MORE attitude throughout with the song being quite slow-to-mid pace which is one of the main outstanding aspects of the whole track. Lead vocalist Chris Fisher did advise me a while back that their new sound has gone into a slightly different direction and he wasn’t wrong. However, on this track alone, Lamassu could have something wholly spectacular and exciting for their upcoming new record.

Guns is absolute DYNAMITE entertainment and offers one of the best GRUNGE tracks I’ve heard this year alone.
