Review
The Hedonist is the new album from Grunge/Stoner Rockers A Forest Mighty Black who tap into the similar creative source of bands such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and QOTSA with perhaps more focus on melodic Alternative Rock. Though you have to give A Forest Mighty Black credit for not falling into the sidelines of Classic Rock / Retro Rock outfits have failed to adapt to recently. As they show a great Psychedelic swagger which has a cool sounding modern day sound.
With a record called The Hedonist, the band focuses upon GOOD vs EVIL and RIGHT vs WRONG within each of the individual tracks with soaring grunge anthems wrapped within a subtle style of Stoner Rock grooves which show a slight reliance of Blues Rock, Hard Rock and even Sludge based aggression.
The first few songs of Animals & Warriors, Birdman and Mental Maze allows A Forest Mighty Black to construct the “LIGHT vs DARK” aesthetic for the lyrical framework with the instrumental sounds becoming more daring with each passing rhythm, groove and riff which drifts between Soundgarden heaviness and the coolness of early-era QOTSA whilst demonstrating the devastating darkness that Alice In Chains ultimately delivered.
The second half of the record is where A Forest Mighty Black venture off into their own musical world and deliver epic sounds of seedy FUZZY heaviness with a raw Stoner Rock/Metal direction that becomes quite DOOM & GLOOM based on tracks such as Mantra Chant, The Night Before The Stars Went Off and Grave Digger.
The final three tracks show A Forest Mighty Black to end up in a different creative location and sound compared to where they ultimately began with. The Hedonist is a mighty fine and damn impressive record from the band which should satisfy both sets of fans from the Grunge and Stoner music scenes. The record has got great riffs, vocals and instrumental sounds throughout which should allow A Forest Mighty Black to become more well known within the underground scene.
Excellent and Highly Recommended.
