Review
Self proclaimed Gonzo Surf Sludge Metallers Godchilla return from their cosmic domain to bring another warped and varied slice of heavy WEEDIAN riffage. It’s been over eight years since the band released a full length album and three years since they released their last single Falling back in September 2022. Their new album Psionic Dreams comes across like Mastodon, The Melvins, FU MANCHU and UFOMAMMUT having one massive extended jam session which goes into all sorts of freaky distorted dimentions.
Godchilla feels more inspired by DARK STAR rather than 2001 A Space Odyssey on this record alone but with some Philip K. Dick inspired lyrics to help solidify the crazed surroundings that are felt with the majority of the tracks. The band do feel they go into about a thousand different directions with the focus being fuelled by Psychedelic Trance Beats and their trademark GONZO SURF based appetite.
The whole sound can be quite chaotic but there’s method to their madness as it’s highly addictive with their COSMIC sound being quite original and superbly frantic at the same time. Godchilla play with a highly experimental style that’s most influenced by THE MELVINS and BORIS in places especially on tracks such as Donksmoker, I Love You, Eyes Eyes and Holiday Club. Psionic Dreams can be very hard to define with the varied and dizzying areas of overlapping sonic experimentation which maybe a tough listen for the casual listener.
Godchilla have never played by the rules and it’s this creative philosophy that makes them play such a brilliantly deranged sound from start to finish. There’s a whole ton of different Ambient noises, Electronic beasts, Industrial glitches and flashes of subtle Sludge Metal progressive energy fully dominating how the album plays out on the second half of the album.
The whole record has a fantastic TONGUE IN CHEEK attitude which makes it even more outlandish when the band decide to play a JAZZY outlook with their whole sound especially with the vocals that become quite nightmarish on tracks such as Work Sux, After Hours, Psionic Dreams and the epic final track of Falling.
Psionic Dreams is a hypnotic and completely fucked up journey worth taking. The grooves and multi-dimension sounding landscapes can be too OUT THERE at times but Godchilla knows how to inject some truly out-of-this world heaviness that leave you wanting to hear more. The album may not make much sense when you first listen to this as it’s very complex and multi-layered but once you’ve aligned to Godchilla’s way of thinking then you’re in one of the most crazed and warped Psychedelic experiences you’ll hear this year.
Excellent and Highly Recommended.
