Review
Wizard’s LIght is the fourth length album from Psych/Doom/Stoner Metallers Wolftooth and they’ve perfectly honed their musical craft with a rich level of storytelling being heard within the music and vocals. There’s a deep respect to bands such as The Sword, Black Sabbath and The Obsessed that has been a staple for Wolftooth ever since their debut album. This time round Wolftooth are creating original sounds of their own making that could easily influence this very next generation of musicians.
The album is both classic and modern sounding in equal measure with the Eighties Heavy Metal influence being adopted very early on before Wolftooth transforms into Psych Stoner Riff Wizards with blazing melodies and fast-paced catchy grooves which has an aura of Post-Doom attitude from time to time. The record is quite fantastical in places with the excellent album cover telling you what to expect if this is your first visit to Wolftooth’s world.
Wizard’s Light is pure WEEDIAN magic and trippy Psychedelic fantasy where the music is superbly aggressive but feels quite grounded with Wolftooth playing to their technical strengths. The record contains ten tracks with the majority of them following the same Psychedelic creative template with non-stop blazing grooves and the superb vocal delivery from lead vocalist Chris Sullivan. Chris has similar vocal similarities to J.D. Cronise (The Sword), WINO and OZZY throughout but still manages to deliver his own highly accomplished Doomed Out style on tracks such as Sightless Archer, Darkened Path, Sands Of Redemption, War Brigade and All Father.
Wolftooth sometimes feel they have a pure FANTASY BATTLE approach to their music where it can be quite uncompromising in places with the classic HEAVY METAL aspect sometimes fully taking control that sees Psychedelic elements being missing in action from time to time. That’s no bad thing as Wolftooth play a heavier, faster and more primal style of music that should keep the “OLD SCHOOL” Heavy Metal brigade happy for the whole record.
Wizard’s Light is a superbly played record that’s boosted by excellent production values throughout which isn’t surprising since this is being put out by Ripple Music and they always deliver the goods. However, this is Wolftooth’s chance to shine once more and perhaps deliver their most impressive album to date.
