Exclusive Album Premiere Of Doom/Thrash/Stoner Metallers CALLUS New Album GRAVIS DECENNIUM Released This Friday

Trepanation Recordings are delighted to be working with CALLUS to release their third album ‘Gravis Decennium’ on 10th May.

Preston, UK based CALLUS play down-tuned stoner metal fused with Thrash, Sludge and Doom elements forming a truly obnoxious, quite furious and outright terrifying sound.

The third studio album by UK heavy band CALLUS.

Gravis Decennium presents a tenth anniversary speciality of earlier material fully re-recorded with crushing new production to celebrate a whole decade of CALLUS.

From CALLUS:

This album is a collection of handpicked tracks from previous early releases, fully re recorded, heavier and more sonically dynamic than we ever thought possible. It's been a labour of love for the past "Heavy Decade" of this band and our lives... Play it fucking loud, we hope it brings you as much joy hearing these tracks as it has done for us re visiting them.'

We're beyond excited to premiere the whole album in full thanks to the awesome folks over at Trepanation Recordings.

Review

Doom/Thrash/Stoner Metallers CALLUS third album Gravis Decennium sees the band continue with their obsessive down-tuned journey that fuses a more intense Heavy Metal sound with the band becoming quite intricate with their multiple styles of different sounds. The album is quite unforgiving with it’s THRASH beats and breakdowns whilst keeping mostly in line with their Stoner Metal identity. CALLUS do generate some classic sound THRASH grooves that have echoes of Lamb Of God, Pantera and Metallica in places.

Gravis Decennium allows CALLUS to present a tenth anniversary speciality of earlier material fully re-recorded with crushing new production to celebrate a whole decade. So even though these songs have been released previously, they haven’t been heard like this before.

This feels like a different sounding CALLUS compared to their previous celebrated 2021 release A Breath Of Fresh Air. The vocals are Doom/Thrash based with a slight James Hetfield swagger to them whilst the music becomes more aggressive and fast-paced on the excellent opening batch of tracks Yog-Sabbath, The Primordial and Infinite Beef Machine. Clean vocals and harsh growls are part of the main course of destructive quality with the filth and dirge ridden lyrics that gives Gravis Decennium a menacing appeal.

However, there’s some fantastic and black pitched humour that appears within the record that showcases CALLUS are happy to have some demented fun with their music.

Other great tracks to check out are:Cycloid, The Dulwich Horror, The Root Of All Evil and Dreameater.

Gravis Decennium does feel like a brand new studio full length recording with the new production values and techniques compared to the original versions. The tracks are way more Psychedelic compared to the originals with a buoyant SONIC attitude heard throughout the album.

If you’re new to CALLUS and want the right introduction to the band then Gravis Decennium is the perfect way to do this. As this record is an excellent album full of brutal Doom/Stoner Metal grooves that has a vicious Thrash/Groove Metal identity to standout from the crowd with.

Excellent and HIghly Recommended.

Review

UK Doom/Stoner/Sludge Thrashers CALLUS are back with their 2nd album A Breath Of Flesh Air with a brutally entertaining slice of modern Heavy Metal spiked with violent attitude to match. An interesting combination of Doom, Sludge and Stoner elements but all wrapped in a Thrash Metal environment. This reminds me of Metallica playing Stoner Metal but with harsh vocals.

The album runs for 30 minutes and the songs have a slight Punk vibe especially the shorter songs such as Ka-tet, Cinderstella, Sorrow’s Bane and Sludge Guzzler but I’m getting away ahead of myself with the album opening up with the excellent almost six minute track Molar Crown. This is a great song to start the album with as CALLUS bring a heavy onslaught of lean, mean and very slick modern  vibe with the Thrash Metal sound allowing CALLUS to bring a more extreme sound to the usual Doom/Stoner Metal sound.

There is a high amount of technical ability to CALLUS music especially when they switch genres round at the drop of a hat and I loved the slightly warped attitude on Ka-tet. The guitar solos are plentiful on this record and CALLUS don’t skimp on that part of the album. The record has a wonderful free-flowing attitude where the songs all superbly lead into each other.

Add the excellent production values from CONAN legend and all round Production Genius that is Chris Fielding then you know the record sounds awesome from start to finish. The music is crisp with the whole sound of the album being wonderfully modern.

The songwriting is another impressive feat from CALLUS where it holds your attention especially on the later stages of the album.

A Breath Of Flesh Air is exactly that. It’s good to hear a band that gets back to basics and leaves the progressive theatrics behind and just aim for “PURE FUCKING METAL” even with this album containing the 10 minute epic Fatberg which is no doubt the standout song on the album.

Yeah, I absolutely adore this record. The album has the right mix of throwback Heavy Metal vibes with the modern Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal grooves leaving you wanting more. Shame it only lasts 30 minutes as I wanted to experience more of what CALLUS had to day. Maybe on future releases they could aim for something longer. Anyway, this is a must have record that will keep fans across the whole Hard Rock/Heavy Metal community entertained for many months to come.
