Review

Finis Temporum is the the seventh album from legendary Stoner Metallers Cowboys & Aliens which is perfectly timed to celebrate the band's thirtieth anniversary since forming in 1996. This is the band’s first album in over four years with Cowboys & Aliens delivering their heaviest and most confident record to date. They’ve leaned quite heavily into the arena of Post-Grunge, Doom and Sludge Rock for this album which still maintains the band’s trademark style of gritty sounding Desert Rock, Psych and Stoner Metal atmospherics. 

The whole record is full of classic Stoner Rock/Metal swagger which comes across superbly well within the opening track of Life Tree which reminds me of KYUSS, FU MANCHU and DOZER with the band now easily being compared next to those legendary bands. The music is very fast-paced and highly aggressive with the mood showcasing some mighty fine Nineties groove oriented Spaced Out elements with Henk’s undeniable vocals holding everything together. 

Finis Temporum is quite compact, clocking in around thirty three minutes across six great tracks with Cowboys & Aliens playing a turbo-charged style of music that’s packed full of great melodies and psychedelic landscapes.

The spiky lyrics are quite grounded, touching upon some highly emotional themes with the record still having that “SPACE ROCK” vibe which you can tell by the cover and the band’s previous albums especially on tracks such as Rabbit Hole,  Vengeance Of The Weird and Icy Grip. Cowboys & Aliens expand their delicious levels of FUZZ ROCK attitude with intense musical ferocity that’s provided by Tom Neirynck (Bass), Peter Gaelens (Drums) and John Pollentier (Guitars) throughout the whole album.

Another unexpected surprise is with the final song of Asteroid Blast which the band originally recorded on their landmark second album A Trip To The Stonehenge Colony. This time round the band have reimagined the track which has also been rerecorded, remixed and remastered compared to the original version. It’s a great modern version of one of their most well known tracks and the 2026 version stands on its own creative merits.

This ends the album in the best way possible with Cowboys & Aliens feeling refreshingly modern and still being one of the most essential acts the Stoner Metal community has right now. 

Finis Temporum should be considered a celebration of Cowboys & Aliens musical legacy whilst hopefully allowing them to endear themselves to a new generation of fans looking for their new favourite band. This is Cowboys & Aliens best record in years and proves once again why they’re Belgium’s premier Stoner Metal act in the world right now.

POLDERRECORDS is proud to announce the release date for Cowboys & Aliens 8th studio album "Burn!": Friday November 25th, 2022

Cowboys & Aliens started their career way back in 1996 but entered Europe’s stonerrock highest division with their second album ‘A Trip To The Stonehenge Colony’. Soon after ‘Love Sex Volume’ followed, and brought the band on stage with the likes of Monster Magnet, Queens of the Stone Age, Karma To Burn, Vista Chino, C.O.C, Danzig, Deep Purple,…Unlike most bands of that era Cowboys & Aliens never stopped developing and after a short hiatus every new album they made unveiled another part of their rich musical background showing metal, stoner, grunge, doom and good old rock ‘n roll can easily fit under one roof.

Today, the Belgian powerhouse is back with their eight’ studio album BURN! Once again the boys did not shy away from wilfulness and produced a dark, hard hitting yet very melodic album that will stand out easily in any heavy rock record collection. The new album allows you to discover new elements every new spin and leaves you with the impression a good old friend is covering your back every step of your journey.

The story behind the artwork of BURN! by Henk Vanhee:

"As BURN! is a record that was almost completely written in full lockdown by John Pollentier and Henk Vanhee exchanging demos online, the songs and the atmosphere are a bit soaked in the uncertainty and the plain darkness of that period. Henk wrote all the lyrics which would make it obvious to be the guide for the artwork. The general idea was to create an image of these dark, troubled and threatening times. Working with images and layers resulted in our very own crowned, skeletal ‘Eddie’ carrying a curved beautiful yet bizarre body out of the flames as a symbol of hope, love, reliability and strength. BURN! became the simple title as an alternative reference to Dylan Thomas’ Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night. As if we were to say: If you have to leave this place, do it with passion and show some love in the process!"

Release date for digital and CD: November 25th, 2022 - Vinyl will ship around that same time, but is still in production.

Review

Cowboys & Aliens return with their 5^th album – Horses Of Rebellion. This album sees the legendary Stoner Rock band add a more thunderous Alternative Rock groove to their classic Stoner based sound. The album is more aggressive compared to their previous albums and it’s good to hear the band trying something different instead of releasing the same album over and over again.

The album never stops with it’s fast-paced aggression from the opening song – Soaking – for the majority of the album. Cowboys & Aliens will please not only long-time fans of the and but also the casual observer or first time listener. As this album ticks all the right buttons with melodic psychedelic Desert/Stoner Rock sounds that bands such as Kyuss and Monster Magnet made famous back in the day. Though please remember this band has been going strong since 1996. Well they did have a brief 5 year hiatus from 2006 to 2011. The fact remains that it’s still great these guys are still around making great music such as Horses Of Rebellion.

Horses Of Rebellion has it’s fair share outstanding songs such as: Soaking, Two Time A Man, Sheep Bloody Sheep, Horses Of Rebellion, Morning Again, Hollow and Release. The only weak part of the album is the final song – Splendid Isolation. As the song doesn’t really go anywhere and leaves you wanting more. Maybe it was best to end the album with a different song.

Apart from that minor complaint, Horses Of Rebellion is a great album and sounds excellent from the start. The production is first-rate and this allows the album to flow at such a natural and addictive pace. If you’re in the mood for a heavier and different style of Stoner Rock then Horses Of Rebellion has you fully covered and proves once again why Cowboys & Aliens are one of the best Stoner Rock bands the European scene has to offer.

Album Release News: COWBOYS & ALIENS Announce New Album - HORSES OF REBELLION

POLDER RECORDS is happy to announce the signing of Belgian’s finest stoner rock legends for their 5th full-length album ‘HORSES OF REBELLION’ out March, 2019.

Cowboys & Aliens is a four-piece stoner rock band from Bruges, Belgium. Formed in 1996, they released 4 full studio albums before falling into hiatus in 2006. The band reunited with the original lineup from ‘’ in 2011 with a brand new EP: “Sandpaper Blues Knockout” and gave a hell of a show at DesertFest Antwerp and opened up for Deep Purple (for the second time) at Vorst Nationaal. 

After playing countless festivals around Europe they released another EP in 2014: “Surrounded by Enemies” that took them once more to numerous stages in Belgium, Holland and Germany.

Now the time has come for their 5th full album: HORSES OF REBELLION to be released March 15th on POLDERRECORDS. The album was recorded and mixed by Pieter Nyckees at Shellshock Studio and mastered by Uwe Teichert at Elektropolis Brussels.

‘HORSES OF REBELLION’ is a classic guide on how to mix different styles into a breathtaking heavy cocktail. It’s all about melodic guitars and classic vocal harmonies, maintaining the riff-loaden grooves and ponderous rhythms Cowboys & Aliens are so well known for.
