SILVERTOMB release new single and video for “Graves In The Sky” From Upcoming New Album

Doom Metal masters SILVERTOMB released their new single and video today. The song "Graves In The Sky" is also included on the upcoming studio album "The Interpretation Of Nightmares".

Guitar player and singer Kenny Hickey: "“Graves in the Sky” was a piece that was written from acoustic guitar and piano-a different creative approach for the band that yielded a new texture for the music, blending acoustic guitar, strings and distorted guitar along with piano. I felt I was coming close to death at the time of writing this song and the lyrics deal with that reality!" .

DRUIDESS announces UK tour with Morag Tong

Following their performances on the Sunday of this year's Masters of the Riff festival, two of the UK Doom Underground's standouts are going on tour together this October.

Morag Tong have been staples of the heavy music scene for a decade now, with their latest album released through Majestic Mountain Records. Drawing on a wealth of influences across the psych, sludge and doom landscapes with lyrical themes of existential wonder and the natural world.

Support for this run comes from fast-rising Newcastle Proto-metal quartet DRUIDESS, whose debut album 'Trip Meadow' has garnered strong reviews from the likes of Metal Hammer and Classic Rock.

HIPPIE DEATH CULT has steadily become one of the most exciting bands in the modern heavy music scene, pairing massive riffs, deep grooves, psychedelic textures, thoughtful lyricism, and hypnotizing melodies into a sound that feels both classic and contemporary. Formed in Portland, Oregon, the trio — guitarist Eddie Brnabic, vocalist/bassist Laura Phillips, and drummer Harry Silvers — has earned a reputation for delivering dynamic, emotionally charged songs and electrifying live performances that showcase their distinctive sound, transcending traditional genres and captivating fans worldwide.

Since their early releases with Cursed Tongue Records and Heavy Psych Sounds Records, the band has built significant momentum. Their 2019 debut album, 111, and its 2021 follow-up, Circle Of Days, received strong praise from critics and listeners alike, with both records topping the Doom Charts and numerous “Best Of” lists, solidifying HIPPIE DEATH CULT as a standout name in the underground scene.

Following these releases, the band‘s evolution into a power trio marked a turning point, with Laura Phillips stepping into lead vocal duties and infusing even more identity and force into the group‘s sound and chemistry. This progression came fully into focus on Helichrysum, the band‘s first full-length studio album featuring Phillips on lead vocals. Released in 2023, the album was widely praised for its stronger songwriting, greater dynamic range, and the chemistry of the new lineup, becoming their most successful release to date in terms of streams and sales.

The band supported Helichrysum with over 250 shows across North America and Europe, including performances on major festival stages and headlining spots, further showcasing the raw power and intensity that have made their live shows a must-see.

Now signed to Blacklight Media and Metal Blade Records, HIPPIE DEATH CULT is entering a new phase with the most reach and momentum of their career. With a growing international fanbase, an increasingly refined sound, and a new release on the horizon, the band is poised to take the next leap forward. Stay tuned for a new full-length in 2027.

The band will be roadbound for the remaining weeks of Summer and much of the Fall beginning with a US tour that runs from August 14th through September 12th. HIPPIE DEATH CULT will head to Europe and the United Kingdom on September 30th for another stretch of live dates through November 1st.

Review

Druidess have already built a fearsome and well deserved reputation supporting the likes of Castle Rat, Slomatics, Dopethrone, Margarita Witch Cult, Josiah and Saint Karloff over the years. They released their debut EP Hermits and Mandrakes back in 2024 which I rated quite highly. Fast forward to 2026 and Druidess have completely reworked their debut EP which makes up the crux of their album. However, this is no mere cash grab with Druidess re-working almost every aspect into a completely different sound with a clearer creative vision and heavier grooves being applied for the album.

Trip Meadow which only expands their heavy blend of Psychedelic, Doom and Stoner Metal. Druidess play areas of Blues Rock, Occult Rock, Proto-Metal and Prog Rock into their music with a slight Sludge Rock undercurrent coming from the excellent guitars supplied by Daniel Downing.

Front and centre of all the action is the highly talented and extremely versatile lead vocalist Shonagh Brown who brings a classic style of Doom Rock merged with a soulful Blues Rock attitude. The vocals are at the forefront of the record for the majority of the record with the rest of Druidess building an epic Doomed Out platform for Shonagh to perform on. The band play closely to the likes of Black Sabbath, Windhand, Hippie Death Cult, The Doors, Green Lung and Monolord. 

Druidess aren’t afraid to go for an OVER THE TOP sound that allows other great instrumental sounds to appear such as Organs, Keyboards and Saxophone. I’ve said before but I’m not the biggest fan of Saxophones being included within Doom and Stoner Metal music. but Daniel Downing puts in a great performance which even I admired leaving me wanting to hear more.

Trip Meadow can be quite TRIPPY and SPACE ROCK heavy where Druidess leave their “Retro Rock” surroundings for a heavier modern day sound with that gloomy Post-Doom sound holding everything together. Though, the sounds of Seventies Proto-Doom and Hard Rock is never too far behind which allows the record to be so damn original throughout. 

Shonagh also provides Bass which she puts in a commanding and aggressive performance with Sam Armstrong helping out on drumming duties where they combine for a massive rhythm section for Druidess to fully operate from. James Hill on keyboards feels like he’s been fed a steady diet of Seventies Prog Rock and Proto Doom albums with the amount of different directions his keyboards actually move into. 

The lyrics have a great classic theme which fully sells the DOOMED OUT aspect of the record especially on tracks such as The Hermit Of Druid’s Temple, Trip Meadow, Knightingales and Witches Sabbath being the main highlights. With a neverending supply of gloomy sound effects and superbly played organs, Druidess have delivered a record that should easily allow them to receive widespread attention that the mighty Green Lung achieved with their first couple of albums.

Trip Meadow is a quality sounding album that is not afraid to move into the darker depths of Classic Doom and modern day Stoner Metal that will leave you completely satisfied when everything is said and done.

Doom Metallers MESSA Unveil “The Dress” Video/Single From Forthcoming New Album The Spin

“The Dress” is the latest single from Italian doom metal conjurors MESSA. The stunning new track, which includes a trumpet solo by Michele Tedesco, comes off the band‘s forthcoming new full-length, The Spin, set for release on April 11th through Metal Blade Records.

Sailing past their tenth anniversary in 2024, MESSA takes another step towards legendary status with their majestic fourth album The Spin, which takes its listeners on a breathtaking journey across the wide-open skies of their creative imagination and over a compelling landscape of moods, twists, and styles. Based in the band's eclectic, self-defined “scarlet doom” sound, The Spin rises, falls, broods, bites, comforts, and destroys, all the while resounding with both instinctive magic and obsessive, concerted hard work. After lighting up the underground with a triptych of increasingly distinctive and wondrous records – 2016's Belfry, 2018's Feast For Water, and 2022's Close – MESSA is audibly equipped for the proverbial big leagues.

Comments the band on “The Dress,” “This song comes from the darkest place and the unfathomable void of oneself. Pain circles around, emerging violently and then drowning again in the depths. This is reflected in the riff: the descent scale keeps coming back and circles repetitively. The dress, in this case, is the gateway to a personal crucifix built with self-hatred and mirroring despair.”

MESSA's signature sound absorbs influences from jazz and blues, punk and prog, and black metal and dark ambient, but their restless experimentalism has extraordinarily smooth and assured results. The Spin incorporates another new element, interpolating an ’80s goth rock vibe in typically full-blooded fashion. "We don‘t like to repeat ourselves and we constantly try to find a new language to express while keeping our identity," stresses the band. "This time we delved into the decade of the 1980s. We are not part of the ’dark scene‘ in any way. The influence for this record looks back to the early goth rock/dark wave rather than the later emanations of the genre." In addition to Sisters Of Mercy and Virgin Prunes, the band cites records by Killing Joke, Mercyful Fate, Jimmy Page, Journey, The Sound, Boy Harsher, and Vangelis as impacting significantly upon the creation of The Spin.

Something that seems to get both easier and harder at the same time are Sara's remarkable vocals. With greater experience of stage and studio, her beguiling pipes continue getting stronger and more versatile; so the singing here is more assertive and confident, but the singer's concerted push to new heights comes somewhat at the expense of a healthy mental equilibrium. "For this record I gave up parts of my own sanity," reveals Sara. "I wore myself in so many different ways… You can‘t lie when you're singing. My aim was to record my parts in the most honest way possible. Mix-wise, the vocals are more on the spotlight, in true ’80s fashion. The lyrics touch on multiple topics throughout the record; destroying one‘s ego, impossible cursed love, giving up on yourself, others‘ expectations, self-sabotage, resurrection. While we were touring the US I reread some books by Cormac McCarthy. It was crucial to pave the way I wanted to express myself. I think the lyrics this time are more ’straight in your face.‘ I used metaphors like I always did, but I wanted to get more verbally naked and raw. I never spoke so clearly in our previous records about insecurity, misery, uneasiness, anguish and distress."

The Spin was partly recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered by Maurizio “Icio” Baggio and includes synth work by Andrea Mantione (Nuovo Testamento) on “Fire On The Roof” and cover art by Nico Vascellari (Uroboro, 2023. Nero Portoro marble, tire. 57 x 57 x 10 cm).

Heavy Metal/Stoner Metal crew Green King release their debut album Hidden Beyond Time and the record is a mixture of Classic Hard Rock and Heavy Metal sounds merged with the underground modern day Stoner Metal grooves. Taking cues from bands such as Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden and The Sword. This album is full of rich sounding moments that show how Green King could be a major part of the Classic or Retro music scene for many years to come but also having a refreshingly different modern sound as well.

Opening song Gates Of Annihilation is the perfect showcase for Green King to play their high-flying and twin-guitar riff worship of the past but with a thoroughly modern Stoner/Doom drive. This is first rate "fist pumping in the air" and "head-banging" material with the band playing that classic Twin Guitar sound to great effect with a highly energetic 80's Heavy Metal effect before the Psych Doom/Stoner underground vibe appears. Taking the mantle of the early-era The Sword with a catchy Thin Lizzy sound to the next level within the instrumental work on the album. Catchy and classic sounding vocals gives the listener an easy gateway to fully get on board with Green King.

Second song Godkiller carries on with the hybrid Heavy Metal/WEEDIAN sound with Green King playing excessive and extended guitar solos that shows a band within truly inspired magnificent form. The guitars have a slight "THRASH" based approach with the vocals moving into menacing Doom Rock passagess. Though, everything remains catchy and aggressive at the same time. Green King enjoy paying homage to their musical influences past and present with an epic homage to Iron Maiden on the later stages of the track. There's also a cool sounding gloomy Stoner influence that works surprisingly well with the faster paced grooves. 

Third song Prelude To Massacre is a lovely Psych Doom/Stoner Rock track with a distinctive feel of it's own. The spoken word passages are perhaps OTT but they show a different side to Green King's creative vision against the other tracks on the album.

Fourth song Steel On Ice has a sense of more urgency to it all with Green King playing a more direct sound. The music doesn't change or drift too far away from the opening two songs and why should it. Green King has hit upon a winning formula so why not only offer HEAVIER and more thrilling moments of this style of music. The song can be too chaotic at times but the excellent vocals and superb lyrics win the day for Green King to shine yet again.

The second half of the album sees Green King perhaps move into heavier and gloomier areas of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. With more of a central focus on Doom/Stoner Metal on tracks such as the Folk Rock tinged Taunter's Theme, Tervakiituri, Where Speedian Dwells and Lifetakers. All superbly written and played tracks with perhaps Tervakiituri and Lifetakers being the finest two tracks on the album.

Despite the thirty four minutes short running time of the album, Green King cover a lot of ground here which feels like the album is on much longer than it actually is. That's a good thing. As there's a ton of different sounding genres, grooves and riffs to fully appreciate on this album. 

Hidden Beyond Time is a brilliantly entertaining release and sees Green King to be a welcome addition to the Doom/Stoner Metal underground scene and should be lovingly embraced with HORNS IN THE AIR whilst HEADBANGING from start to finish.
