Review

One of the finest Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal bands from the underground scene Vinnum Sabbathi return with Intersatelital which focuses upon the following:

Back in 1985, two satellites (Morelos I & II) were put in orbit under the NASA missions STS-51-G and STS-61-B. These satellites became crucial for advancing communications in Mexican territory and were controlled and monitored by Mexican engineers in the heart of Mexico City.

Mission STS-61-B also featured the first-ever Mexican astronaut, Dr Rodolfo Neri, who set several experiments in orbit as well as taking photo documentation of the country from space, and, with all of this, Mexico entered a new era of technology and communications.

A sonic testament of the intricate human-machine comradeship from the last century.

The EP itself once again sees Vinnum Sabbathi explore the heaviest areas of Spaced Out Doom but always bringing a sense of harsh reality to the mix which allows their music to be classed as Science Fact rather than Science Fiction. This hugely talented collective delve into realistic possibilities and craft an entire WORLD full of intense melodies that holds the right amount of Doom, Sludge, Stoner and Psychedelic passages which has seen them as perhaps one of the most dominant and important Cosmic Doom bands within the underground scene.

The music is constantly evolving and changing the way of the underground Instrumental Rock/Metal music for the better as Vinnum Sabbathi injects a highly original way of playing synths, sound effects and sludgy rhythms into the greater Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metal vortex. Intersatelital is a genuine work of art especially on the standout lengthier tracks of Sistema de Satélites Morelo and Rodolfo Neri Vela.

This release allows Vinnum Sabbathi to create a more reflective and stripped back sound which is also perhaps their most personal record to date with them focusing upon their beloved homeland of Mexico as its main focus.

Vinnum Sabbathi once again conjures up intense Psychedelic rhythms and Cosmic surroundings that’s fuelled by a highly intelligent use of modern day of Progressive Stoner Metal which is an absolute joy to listen to. The EP is superbly produced and despite its short running time offers more action packed moments than some full length albums I’ve heard recently.

After all is said and done, Intersatelital sees Vinnum Sabbathi at the top of their creative game and cement their reputation as one of the true greats of the underground scene.

Words by Steve Howe

REZN and VINNUM SABBATHI to release collaborative album "Silent Future" on August 11th via Blues Funeral Recordings; stream first single!

Blues Funeral Recordings present the next chapter of their acclaimed PostWax series, with a fully collaborative album between Chicago avant-garde doom outfit REZN and Mexico City instrumental cosmic metallers Vinnum Sabbathi. "Silent Future" will be released worldwide on August 11th, with preorders and the first single available right now!

Listen to REZN and Vinnum Sabbathi's new track "Hypersurreal"

On Silent Future, Chicago atmospheric psych-doom outfit REZN teams up with Mexico City cosmic conceptualists Vinnum Sabbathi for a true union of heavy exploration. Allowing themselves a fluid, open canvas to experiment, members of both bands contribute equally to create an album of lush, hypnotic and frequently megalithic ambiance, yielding an utterly cohesive trip into the riff-drenched astral reaches.

About this collaborative album, REZN comments:  "Ever since we played a show in Mexico City with Vinnum Sabbathi, we knew we wanted to find an opportunity to incorporate their cinematic style within the REZN soundscape. The Postwax creative concept helped guide us into making an album that stands out from the rest of our catalog, which was a really refreshing challenge for us. After the songwriting flowed freely, we intentionally left space so we could collaborate together on each song and explore the many shades of psychological cosmic horror.

Vinnum Sabbathi adds: "We feel honored to be part of the Postwax series with this special collaboration with our Friends Rezn, the creation of “Silent Future” gave us the opportunity of experimenting with new ways of composing and recording, but also adding our own touch to the concept with the use of samples and this is very well represented in the first single “Hypersurreal”.

The fluidity with which REZN and Vinnum Sabbathi collaborate is unlikely, yet inarguable. Strong nuclear forces conjoin sections as alternatingly ethereal as celestial light and dense as a black hole collapse.  Ultimately, the endeavor is never limited to being one thing for long, any more than it is limited to being the work of a single band. More than a listening experience, Silent Future’s vitality extends beyond the aural. This is the work of two groups pushing themselves further than they’ve gone before, each answering the other's question of how far they can ultimately go. As heavy as Silent Future gets, as distant as it may range, one cannot regard this righteously thick, molten-tempo journey into the unknown as anything but breathtaking.

"Silent Future" will be released worldwide on August 11th in various vinyl formats, limited digipak CD and digital. The ultra-limited deluxe vinyl edition will be shipped in June to PostWax Vol. II subscribers. Preorders are available now on Blues Funeral Recordings.

The seed for Chicago quartet REZN’s megaton riffs and psychedelic journeys was planted when guitarist Rob McWilliams and bassist Phil Cangelosi began jamming at age twelve in the DC commuter town of Leesburg, Virginia. Relocating to Chicago in 2015, the pair recruited local sound engineer Patrick Dunn to bash on the drums, and, after playing just three shows together, set about recording their molten amp-worshiping debut LP, also inviting their friend Spencer Ouellette to round out the bottom-heavy sound with the hum and squall of modular synth.  Several albums and experimental releases later, REZN has forged a unique style of heavy music by molding disparate textural and musical elements into a shimmering, pummeling cohesion of crushing mass, cosmic weightlessness and lysergic calm.

Formed in 2012 in Mexico City, Vinnum Sabbathi merges loud, slow and distorted riffs with samples from science fiction and science fact, transmitted to listeners through heavy jams and hypnotic transitions. Across two EPs, four split releases, two albums and a live session, this hyperdimensional foursome's singular goal is to create powerful interstellar soundtracks to both earth-originating and space-born cosmic events, via both studio recordings as well as live outings across Mexico and Europe.

Blues Funeral Recordings announce REZN and VINNUM SABBATHI for new PostWax Vol. II series; Kickstarter for subscription signups live now

Hot on the heels of the Acid King and Josiah announcement, Blues Funeral Recordings reveal Chicago's REZN and Mexico City's VINNUM SABBATHI as the next two bands to take part in the second volume of their PostWax vinyl subscription series, this time for a special collaborative release.

The joining of REZN's gargantuan heaviness and lysergic dreamscapes with VINNUM SABBATHI's hypnotic and jammy superscience soundtracks is the exact type of aural mind-meld that PostWax was conceived to present. These two avant-garde outfits will deliver one massive and ground-breaking effort, one that has chance to make an impression among heavy music lovers and beyond.

REZN guitarist Rob McWilliams elaborates: "Our intention is to give this collaboration a solid REZN foundation with Vinnum Sabbathi providing the cosmic textures and atmosphere to align it all under the same sonic storyline. We've been talking about doing something together for a little while now, since our bands are a great match sonically and already sync up in a lot of ways. In the end, we'll have a roasty REZN dish with a decadent Vinnum Sabbathi glaze."

VINNUM SABBATHI guitarist Juan Tamayo adds: “For us, this collaboration with REZN is very special. From the day we played with them in Mexico, we knew we wanted to create something together, and being able to do it with Blues Funeral for the PostWax series is a great privilege. We can't wait to make something truly unique by adding a story to the sonic landscapes, and all the fans are in for some cosmic epicness.”

About REZN

The music churned out by Chicago quartet REZN somehow manages to convey both crushing mass and cosmic weightlessness. The seed was planted when guitarist Rob McWilliams and bassist Phil Cangelosi began jamming together at age twelve in the DC commuter town of Leesburg, VA. They relocated to Chicago in 2015, recruited Patrick Dunn to bash on the drums, and set about recording their debut album 'Let It Burn' after playing just three shows together. Spencer Ouellette rounded out their bottom-heavy sound with the hum-and-squall of modular synth, and the added textural component immediately became a key facet to their sound. REZN quickly established their footing in the heady-and-heavy Chicago rock community, playing with esteemed riff barons like Bongripper and Oozing Wound, as well as landing coveted slots for Conan and Acid King. The 2018 sophomore album 'Calm Black Water' continued the band’s penchant for molasses-thick guitar-and-bass punishments with soaring minor key vocal melodies, but Ouellette further pushed the dreamscape envelope by supplementing the synth duties with blissed out saxophone passages. REZN’s newest offering 'Chaotic Divine' continues their melding of gargantuan heaviness and lysergic calm, as well as the band’s penchant for tying the music to a visual landscape.

About VINNUM SABBATHI

Formed in 2012 in Mexico City, Vinnum Sabbathi merge loud, slow and distorted riffs with samples from science and sci-fi to create a unique sonic experience. From 2013 to 2016, the band released two EPs and two split albums, but it's their 2017 debut album 'Gravity Works' (LSDR Recs) that really caught the international scene's attention. Their space-themed doom traveled from Mexico to the Old Continent's shores, leading them to play at Bristol Psych Fest, Doomlines and Sonic Blast Moledo. Between 2018 and 2019, the band released two more split records including 'The Good Earth is Dying' with Cegvera, also playing shows with Red Fang, Rosetta, Rezn and Truckfighters. Early in 2020, their sophomore album 'Of Dimensions & Theories' sees the light of day and slowly but steadily proves that science, space and riffs belong together, leaving an elephantine trail for their works to come.

Blues Funeral Recordings is an independent label created by the founders of MeteorCity and Lowrider, and releasing music from luminary artists in the heavy/stoner/doom/psych ecosphere. While issuing stellar albums from Domkraft, Howling Giant, Lord Buffalo and Somnuri, the label has also gained attention through PostWax, a groundbreaking subscription-style series of lavish custom releases featuring exclusive music from Elder, Daxma, Spotlights, Lowrider, Besvärjelsen, Big Scenic Nowhere and Domkraft.

Review

Vinnum Sabbathi new album – Of Dimensions And Theories – (ODAT) – continues the journey that Post-Doom/Sludge Metal Instrumentalists – Cegvera – started with The Sixth Glare. As this ambitious two-part concept album told through different bands now goes into outer space with Vinnum Sabbathi telling the next thrilling chapter that The Sixth Glare ended upon.

Whilst The Sixth Glare focused upon the almost end and complete destruction of humanity, this sees the last remain of the survivors journeying into space and the perilous journey they end up taking.

As with Cegvera new album. Vinnum Sabbath excel themselves with their new record. As ODAT is full of rich ideas that could leave people confused especially if you haven’t heard The Sixth Glare. As the album is spliced with little bits of information from that album but with a more cosmic and spaced out vibe.

If you’ve heard of Vinnum Sabbathi’s previous records, then their trademark Psychedelic Doom and Spaced Out Stoner Metal grooves are still there but played at a heavier level and perhaps even more progressive than ever before. The ever-present audio soundbytes make a welcome return and drive the story along through it’s natural, bleak and heavy conclusion.

The album is split into two parts. The first part is the four epic songs (In Search Of M-Theory, Quantum Determinism, A Superstring Revolution I and A Superstring Revolution II) represent the “Dimensions” part of the album with the focus primarily being on the Space Exploration of the story.

The second part represent the “Theories” part of the album with two shorter songs (An Appraisal and Beyond Perturbative States) representing the public’s view of the current situation on the planet.

Vinnum Sabbathi take different approaches with all of the songs on the album and perhaps at their creative best on the “Theories” part of the album. As the soundclips used against the Ambient Post-Rock sounds add a more depressing feel to the overall sound of the album.

I may have gone slightly deeper than I would have liked with this review and I make no apologies for that. As the story is equally as important as the music itself. Though, the music is equally as powerful with Vinnum Sabbathi continuing with their distinctive blend of Prog Metal, Psych, Doom, Stoner and Sludge Metal combining for a more cinematic style of music.

The standout songs are perhaps the “Dimensions” part of the album with Vinnum Sabbathi bringing the best and heaviest sounds on that part of the album. The instrumental work can be distorted at times and the use of Electronic Sounds add an extra layer of intelligence to the overall story of the entire album.

Of Dimensions And Theories is a complex and multi-layered album that’s just as accessible as their celebrated debut album but the band deserve credit for going down a different route for this album. If you’re not bothered about the story and only here for the riffs and that’s fine too. As Vinnum Sabbathi have you covered on all fronts with a wide range of different genres within the Heavy Rock spectrum.

This album like The Sixth Glare is an Album Of The Year contender for myself. The hardest part for myself will be deciding which one is the better album. At this moment in time, I can’t decide and they’re equally as brilliant as each other. If you’ve already own The Sixth Glare, then Of Dimensions And Theories is an essential purchase.

Review

Acclaimed Instrumental Doom/Stoner/Spaced Out Astronauts - Vinnum Sabbathi - return with their eagerly awaited debut album - Gravity Works. Vinnum Sabbathi have been releasing a string of acclaimed singles and EP's over the years which has seen them become one of the genres best undiscovered bands. Vinnum Sabbathi play a progressive style of Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal with the concept being firmly set around the dark reaches of Space. Gravity Works is a concept album with the music built around an intriguing story which is explained below:

Gravity Works describes the relationship between gravity and human exploration, from the state of weightlessness experienced and recorded by astronauts and the historic achievements of Russian and American scientists during the Space Age to the ultimate collapse of the entire Universe described by Asimov in "The Collapsing Universe".

The album feels like a training manual of sorts especially with the voiceover advising the listener with the many different elements and dangers of being in space. It's an exciting way to create an album as Vinnum Sabbathi make you part of the journey from the very start. Opening track - Weightlessness - is a trippy and psychedelic tale with moments of heavy doom/stoner riffs as Vinnum Sabbathi creates haunting and original sounds of their own.

Second track - Early Works - carries on with the instruction manual style voiceover. With the riffs being played at a slow distorted pace. This song has quite a cold and subtle doom and gloom approach as the song stays sombre throughout. It takes some time for the heavy moments to appear though that's down to the overall concept of the album. Vinnum Sabbathi has done their homework as you're experiencing an album that feels it's steeped in both Science Fact and classic Science Fiction.

The album is first and foremost a Doom/Stoner Metal album and Vinnum Sabbathi never forget that fact as they create some stunning riffs that pay homage to legendary bands past and present. It may take you a few listens to fully understand and appreciate the album. As you can be distracted from the distorted sounds and voiceovers spliced throughout the album.

The other tracks on the album - Gravity Waves, Loop Quantum Gravity and The Probe B - follow the same path as the opening two tracks but perhaps with more a ferocious style of Doom/Stoner sounds that sees Vinnum Sabbathi venture into heavier Sludge based grooves. The Probe B is the standout track on the album as Vinnum Sabbathi play the heaviest and fastest moments on the album. It’s a song that shows you the full power and creativity of Vinnum Sabbathi.

The production is superb as Vinnum Sabbathi build a cosmic wall of sound around you. If you're new to the world of Vinnum Sabbathi then get with the program and download this now. Gravity Works is perhaps the first must have Doom/Stoner Metal album of the year. Don't be too surprised if you see this album on a few best albums of lists come the end of the year. This is an unmissable album.

Words by Steve Howe

Gravity Works is available to Buy/Download on BandCamp now. CD will be released via LSDR Records and Vinyl will be released via Aim Down Sight Records later in 2017.
