Review

Psych/Desert/Stoner Rockers ULTRACOMBO return with their new record Season 3 which continues the great work of their previous releases of Season 1 and Season 2. This time round the band include a solid Electronic sound into the mix which gives their music a slight commercial sound that reminds of modern day QOTSA with a dash of RED FANG street level grooves for the majority of the record.

Opening track Out Of My Mind combines Grunge, Desert Rock, Psych and Stoner Rock sound with a cool danceable energy which still is quite rebellious with ULTRACOMBO moving around the Nineties and Noughties Stoner Rock platform. The vocals are excellent with a cool underground appearance being quite expressive with the band applying an almost like “PARTY GOING” atmosphere into their music but the classic Stoner Rock swagger should appeal to fans of KYUSS, FU MANCHU and TRUCKFIGHTERS.

Second track Annullamento is vastly different with ULTRACOMBO applying a Space Rock and Post-Stoner finish with maybe some Yawning Man based soundscapes appearing allowing the band to add a thoughtful trippy and trance based vibe into their music. WIth a lush sounding Post-Rock movement delves into a distorted style of Cosmic and Space Rock synths with an experimental Electronic sound being quite riff-centric which allows this to be the standout track on the EP.

Third track II pavone leans further and quite heavily into the Electronic arena with a vast array of Desert Rock, Fuzz and Stoner Rock musical surroundings transfer themselves over to the land of Drone, Doom and Sludge Rock. This part of the EP is quite abstract but sees a daring style of creativity being applied by ULTRACOMBO for a dense and heavier distorted delivery.

Fourth track Il fungo e l'universo sees ULTRACOMBO return to the classic style of Desert, Fuzz and Stoner Rock with a laid back melody slowly becoming heavier and more aggressive with each passing moment. The electronic beats are there from time-to-time but it’s the good old fashioned style of Fuzzed Out energy that allows the legendary Californian Desert Rock scene to fully shine through. The vocals are excellent with a delivery that can be quite different from time-to-time.

The final track of Un giorno come ieri once again allows ULTRACOMBO to use that classic style of QOTSA based delivery with soulful strands of Alt Rock and even Shoegaze which sees the band widen their creative identity much further afield compared to the previous tracks on the EP. When the turbo-charged and blistering FUZZY soundscapes join forces then Season 3 takes giant risks with how the music is played which leaves you wanting more.

Season 3 is a massive improvement on both musically and creatively speaking for ULTRACOMBO when compared to Season 2. The production process is handled superbly well that allows ULTRACOMBO to once again play first rate instrumental melodies that will go down a storm with the Stoner Rock underground community.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Fuzz/Alternative/Stoner Rockers WASTE A SAINT Release New Song/Video For C.M.T.L From Upcoming New Album RAVENOUS

Waste a Saint is a Norwegian band from Trondheim that plays melodic stoner rock with psychedelic touches and their sound has been compared to bands such as Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather and Spiders, alternative rock from the nineties and fuzzed bands from the late sixties.

After the release of their debut album "Hypercarnivore" (All Good Clean Records - 2022), they've toured all over Norway and played in cities like Gothenburg and Copenhagen.

In June 2023, Waste a Saint entered the Sørgården studio to record their second album “Ravenous” with Per Borten from Spidergawd sitting behind the recording console. “Ravenous” essentially picks up their debut “Hypercarnivore” left off, presenting the characteristic sound Waste a Saint has created over the years and showcases their ability to meld genres. With a foundation of melodic stoner rock, singable choruses and catchy guitar riffs, the band incorporates elements from metal, blues and kraut rock throughout the album’s eight tracks.

Line-up:

Bogey Stefansdottir - Vocals
Alexander Skomakerstuen - Guitars
Ole Nogva - Bass
Øivind Fossem - Drums

We're excited to premiere the new song C.M.T.L from their upcoming new album Ravenous due out on Friday March 1st 2024 on All Good Clean Records.

The band say this about the track: "The song is by far the most aggressive on the album, but it's also one of the songs we had the most fun creating. The lyrics are from the pov of someone who was cheated on; when the cheater regrets what they've done and comes begging for forgiveness. To make the theme really stand out, we wanted to have someone to add scream vocals and we were lucky enough to get the awesome Sondre Sørensen Brønstad from Agabas to do just that. Despite its aggressiveness, the song has a playfulness to it that reflects the satisfaction of standing your ground, making it a band favourite."

Chris Korr From Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers THE MOTH: Favourite Albums Of 2023

Chris Korr from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers The Moth selects his Favourite Albums Of 2023.

The Moth released their acclaimed new album FROST earlier this year and it's another album that's made my very own Favourite Album Of 2023 list.

Read below for some outstanding releases chosen by Chris

Obituary - Dying of Everything

Pure early 90's Death Metal. As simple as it gets. Nothing new but the real deal. For me, the best Obituary Album since The End Complete.

Calavera - Bestial Devastation / Morbid Visions

Still have the tape of the Sepultura debut Album Morbid Visions including the Bestial Devastation EP. Always thought that this stuff needs to be reissued with a better sound. And now, here it is! Awesome! It’s brutal and it sounds so good without losing roughness.

Treedeon – New World Hoarder

Third Album of our friends and label mates. Really good sludge/noise sound from Berlin. Good live band and always super nice to hang out with. Go to their shows and buy their records.

Civic – Taken By Force

OZ Power! The Saints - Radio Birdman - Hybrid with a unique own style! Damn Good.

Kurt Vile - Back To Moon Beach

Not much to say. Kurt Vile is great!

Negative Blast – Echo Planet

Great Punk/Hardcore Band from San Diego California with drumming Skateboarder Mario Rubalcaba. Every band he’s playing in is great. Unsurprisingly this Band too!

Gel - Only Constant

New Jersey Hardcore Punk with hurricanesque energy. Reminds me a bit of Trash Talk. Lots of fun to listen to it!

Slowdive - Everything Is Alive

Shoegazing – Psychedelic - Pop from the UK. I’m a huge Neil Halstead fan. I like his solo stuff and every band he’s playing in!

Wilco - Cousin

I haven't listened to Wilco records in ages. But this one ended up on my record player in 2023. Great record! Perfect for winter in Germany.

I Am Low is an Alternative/Grunge/Stoner Rock band from Umeå, Sweden. Ten years, three albums, two EPs and one line up change in 2018 later, they are now ready to release their fourth and and hopefully best and brightest album yet, perhaps heavier and slightly more psychedelic than before.

The Lowdown

'Dead Space' is the first single from I Am Low’s fourth full length album Úma, via Majestic Mountain Records, digitally on September 29th.

We formed in 2019. We got together after all our previous bands had pretty much parted ways. We knew we were all into similar music like the 90’s alternative stuff but also heavily into punk & metal.

Review

Skyggekæmper (meaning Shadow Giants) is the new album from Danish Stoner Rockers SABOTØR and this is a turbo-charged album with the vocals sung in their native language. This isn’t your typical Stoner Rock album with SABOTØR having an experimental drive to their overall sound. The album is quite fast-paced and aggressive with a slight Alt Rock and Punk Rock sound.

This isn’t going to be for everyone and if you’re not convinced by the opening song Robot then it maybe best to look elsewhere. However, SABOTØR brings a wonderful style of eccentricity to the album with the trippy noises and ambient based glitches that all merge together for an almost “Party Rock” style atmosphere. The vocals are all over the place but in a good way with a buoyant performance from lead vocalist J.R.

Second song Ro På, Danmark! Is a funk rock driven number with SABOTØR perhaps drawing on influences as diverse as Red Hot Chili Peppers on this track. Fast-paced grooves and Punk Rock sounds merge surprisingly well with the Stoner based elements heard on this track.

Third song King Diamond is perhaps the most straightforward track on the album with SABOTØR focusing primarily with one style of music and that’s Stoner Rock through and through. The instrumental work is loud and downright catchy. J.R.’s vocals continue with their wild showman attitude especially when the loud shrieks appear. Though, it’s the music that wins the day with SABOTØR playing some of the best sounds on the album. Check out the excellent guitar solos towards the end of the song.

Other standout songs include: Arbejde Gør Fri, Oprør! and Skyggekæmper

The album keeps up with its unpredictable nature as SABOTØR bring heavier grooves and creative themes to the second half of the album especially on the final two tracks of Edderkoppemor and Skyggekæmper.

I’m glad I’ve listened to SABOTØR. As this did put me out of my comfort zone at times even with this being a Stoner Rock album. The album can be quite hard to listen to at times but the album's upbeat nature can be infectious in places. Just be prepared for an experimental style of Stoner Rock fused with different sounds that you wouldn’t expect for a Stoner Rock album.

Overall, Skyggekæmper is a highly confident affair that offers a superbly different slice of Stoner Rock based madness.

Review

Departures is the new album from Psychedelic Shoegaze Rockers Filthy Hippies and they take a left-field creative turn with the normal style of Psychedelic Rock. The band have been going for over 3 years now and have released quite a few releases in this time. I believe Departures is their 4th or 5th full length album. Well according to the press release that accompanied with this album.

Departures is quite an expansive, bold, brash and wonderfully exciting album that takes many different genres and sounds which the band give a fresh spin. There are 15 songs on the record and the album runs for almost 78 minutes. So Filthy Hippies have a lot to say on this record but if you’re in the mood for a more daring, darker and “DEVILISH” style of Psychedelic Rock with glorious “POP” based hooks and grooves then Filthy Hippies demand your full undivided attention.

The band are inspired by the 60s Phil Spector sound and the 80s Shoegaze scene with that timeless Psychedelic Rock vibe that’s the main “thrust” of this album. Filthy Hippies do employ a lot of sonic distortion on this record and that’s evident from the excellent opening song – Spirit. With it’s heavy riffs and world-weary atmosphere, the band revel in their shoegaze surroundings and the vocals are the icing on the cake for a trippy dark experience.

If you’re a fan of bands such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Jesus And Mary Chain and even Slowdive for the more atmospheric parts of the album. Though, Filthy Hippies create their own blend of addictive and original music to make themselves known with.

I would love to do a song-by-song review for an album such as this but there are too many songs to consider but I will list my favourite songs to check out: Mystified, You’re The Sun, The Recipe, Among The Wire, Dethroned, and Empty Spaces.

These are the parts of the album that I enjoyed the most with Filthy Hippies impressing me even further with their wild style of music that has an almost “global” feel. One of the main strengths of this album is the “Ambient” based noises the band employ on this record. It shouldn’t really work but to Filthy Hippies credit, it moves this album into top-level Experimental Rock.

The production techniques used on the record is another highlight that seamlessly blends all the different elements held on the record.

Obviously, Departures isn’t going to be for everyone but if you’re in the mood for a challenging and complex listen then Filthy Hippies could be worth a listen. It’s an album that you need to be in a certain mood to fully listen to but when you do listen to Departures, you’ll find things that you’ve missed first time round.

Overall, Departures is an exciting record that dares to be different.

PLH Hendriks - Everything

Review

Soothsayer Orchestra new album was originally released back in May 2020 and I missed the album when it was released. Now giving a well deserved Vinyl Release courtesy of the fine folks over at Lay Bare Recordings. This album is a dark mix of Alternative Rock, Folk Rock and Americana. The album is quite gloomy with it’s overall themes and musical structures.

The album is not the easiest thing to listen to but PLH Hendriks the mastermind behind this album weaves a dark tale across 9 wickedly entertaining tracks. The album can be quite “Doom” with PLH Hendriks adapting a mysterious “Noir” based narrative for the majority of his lyrics and that opens the album to some bleak sounding Psych Rock and Blues Rock elements appearing.

Songs range from acoustic rock ballads to more energetic almost Stoner Rock grooves. The album is always constantly changing and has a deep exterior to it all. The instruments are quite varied on the record with PLH Hendriks playing everything himself.

Standout songs include: Black Velvet Deathbed, Euryale, Dead Lovers Eden, Heavenseeker and Amidst The Coiling Snakes.

PLH Hendriks makes a grand use of ambient soundscapes that was quite refreshing to hear and sets this album to be very different from the other “one-man band” albums I’ve heard recently.

Soothsayer Orchestra debut album is a mighty fine and impressive album with superb production values. The album does sound claustrophobic in places but it’s matches the dark mood and mysterious energy the album wholly contains from start to finish.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

TORUS - High Rope (Single Review)

High Rope – Tracklisting

High Rope

Review

Torus is a UK Desert/Stoner Rock Duo with a cool Alternative Feel to them. There new single High Rope is a mixture of early-QOTSA/Kyuss vibes with catchy Foo Fighters style vocals and poppy based lyrics. The song is quite addictive and shows a band with genuine promise. Torus easily capture the swagger of 90s Desert/Stoner Rock and match it with a modern Post-Grunge flow.

The lyrics are good and brings you into Torus upbeat world. Some folks may complain that this maybe too “Poppy” to be considered Desert/Stoner Rock but I would call this song a great throwback to 90s Stoner Rock with a hard-rocking Alternative Edge.

I’ve checked out the guys other music videos on YouTube and I’m impressed what the band has to offer and they have written some other excellent songs such as Hold On, The Feeling and Make You Mine which you can also check out on BandCamp as well.

I’m hoping Torus have an EP or full length album coming out in the future. As these guys have a new fan right here. So get on board with TORUS.

Review

e.t.c is a Grunge/Alternative Rock Band from Peru who ave just the 10th Anniversary Edition of their self-titled debut album. The album and band itself are primarily influenced by bands such as Deftones, Nirvana and a few other bands from the 90s Grunge Scene. The band add a modern Alternative Rock flavour and I can hear the Deftones influence shining throughout the majority of the songs on their debut record.

It’s by no means perfect but if you grew up in the 90s and worshipped the legendary Grunge Scene then e.t.c. are doing a lot of things right with this release. This is my first exposure to the band and there are some great tunes to lose yourself in with A Comenzar, Sed, Ayer, Maria, Revoluxion and Tuntún.

The vocals have a rough and ready appeal to them which matches the Grunge aesthetic superbly well. The album itself is 14 tracks long with the band adding 7 bonus tracks from that are a mixture of Demo and Live tracks. So this is quite the complete package for e.t.c. to release.

One of the more exciting parts about e.t.c. is when they venture into other areas of music such as Progressive Rock. This shows the band are not afraid to broaden their own musical horizons and you can hear bands diverse as TOOL filtering into the band’s overall sound.

e.t.c (Edición 10 años) is a welcome change from the usual Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal bands I normally review and let myself remember the good old days when I worshipped the Grunge Scene back in my younger days.

So if you’re an Alternative Rock/Grunge fan then this album is the ideal release for you and you can also discover a fantastic band from the South American Hard Rock/Grunge scene.

MELT Release New Song And Video For HELLION

Today sees the release of Hellion, the new single and video from French dark alternative collective Melt. The track is taken from the bands 2nd full length album The Secret Teaching Of Sorrow set for release on the 19th June via Mongrel Records
The band originally started as a duo when vocalist Charlotte and guitarist Olivier met in October 2007. During the first 8 years of living together they created the first Melt demos, in what can only be described as chaos. The result was a very personal combination of rock and metal: screaming - not with your guts but with your soul. The music is dark, but ironically Charlotte and Oliver formed the band in pursuit of light ad hope in the world.
In 2015 these two roaming souls met Roméo (drums) and Jux (bass guitar) - and so Melt could finally become a band, playing on every kind of stage in their area for the next 5 years.
“Hellion is a song about what Melt has always been focused on: the relationship between you and that unknown mystery that awaits you when you die. In the song it is both called ‘Night’ and ‘Sun’, the song talks about the irresistible attraction felt toward ‘Night’ and ’Sun’. Melt is about melting in them.” Comment guitarist Olivier Antoine.

Ethyl Ether have unveiled the eerie video for their track Therapy?

Cape Town based psychedelic alternative rock band Ethyl Ether have unveiled the eerie video for their track Therapy? taken from their upcoming album Chrome Neon Jesus which releases on the 15th May 2020
. The band formed just over 3 years and have been gigging regularly around Cape Town’s music venues as well as releasing 2 albums ’The Pleasure Room' and 'Museum Of Human Error' plus a live ep 'Into Chaos'.
For the new album their sound has toughened up and they’ve added a load of psychedelic textures. They explore the darker, grittier side of life and reflect their experiences and observations on everyday living.
Vocalist and guitarist Andrew Paine comments on the track, "Therapy? is a song about our inability as humans to be content with what we have...always wanting more"
The band was unable to get together to shoot a video due to a countrywide lockdown because of the current covid-19 pandemic, so they used a montage of clips taken from classic and cult horror and thriller films.
“The footage was chosen for the way it perfectly captured the menacing tone of the song and enhances the audio experience for the viewer” comments Andrew who edited the video.

Review

ULTRACOMBO released their debut record Season 1 way back in September 2019 and I’ve only recently discovered them. The band play a fast and loose style of Psychedelic Stoner Metal and Doom Metal with a modern twist. The vocals are quite fresh and varied for this record. The band feel influenced by KYUSS, SLEEP, QOTSA and Red Fang but with the FUZZ ROCK grooves of TRUCKFIGHTERS.

Opening song – The King – reigns supreme as the standout song of this EP with heavy precise grooves and heavy psychedelic overtones of fast-paced Doom/Stoner riffs with a twinge of Desert/Fuzz Rock in the background. This is a mighty confident song and ULTRACOMBO are in fine boisterous form with their aggressive lyrics and passionate vocals allow the band to impress from the start.

Second song – Sparatutto – is a more fast-paced affair with the band adding a more aggressive streak to their music. The song feels inspired driving along at a crazy fast pace along the Californian Desert. So this is most definitely a Desert/Stoner Metal song and ULTRACOMBO don’t let you forget that. The music has quite an alternative feel to it in places whilst not as polished as the opening song still offers a few thrills and spills along the way.

Third song – Gravità – is what would happen if QOTSA kept their early Desert/Stoner Rock vibe but with a modern sound. The song is quite straight forward but it’s what ULTRACOMBO do with that sound to make it such an exciting listen. The vocals are great and match the energetic guitars that are played to a fast rhythm.

The final two songs - Flusso and l momento in cui non penso – carry on the Alternative style of Desert/Stoner Metal riffs with deep flourishes of Fuzz/Desert and Psychedelic Rock being added as well. The end result is a rich and deeply satisfying EP that allows ULTRACOMBO to make their mark and impressive almost anyone who will listen to this record.

With Season 1 being over I hope there is multiple SEASONS to come from ULTRACOMBO as the band impressed me highly with their debut EP. Lets hope SEASON 2 isn’t too far away…
