US Doom Metal Giants THE OBSESSED sign to Heavy Psych Sounds!

American doom metal icons THE OBSESSED have inked a worldwide deal with Heavy Psych Sounds Records for the release of their new studio album in 2027.

The Obsessed is a rock band. A fucking HARD rock band. Since their formation in 1978, they have become known around the world for their influential contribution to the origins and continued legacy of the doom metal and underground hard rock genres. The distinctive vocals and guitar wizardry of founder and driving force Scott “Wino” Weinrich has left a mark on the world of heavy music that continues to inspire.

The Obsessed gained momentum in the Baltimore/DC area of the USA in the early to mid 1980’s during the height of the hardcore punk movement. Often cited as the band that bridged heavy metal and punk together, the band gained the respect of punk heavyweight contemporaries Black Flag, The Bad Brains, and Minor Threat, to name a few. The attitude and spirit of The Obsessed have led many to regard them as “America’s Motorhead”.

Wino went on to join the doom metal giants Saint Vitus as lead singer on seminal albums including 1986’s Born Too Late. In 1990, The Obsessed came back with their eponymous debut album, The Obsessed. This album was quickly followed by 1991’s Lunar Womb and 1994’s The Church Within. All three of these albums shaped and paved the way for future heavy rock bands and the doom scene as it’s known today. Wino’s gift for prose and his never-ending search for truth and meaning allow his words to hit as heavy as the riffs he plays.

Although The Obsessed went on a hiatus after The Church Within’s release on Columbia Records, Wino’s sheer passion and prolific nature led him to pursue many other critically acclaimed projects such as Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, Shrinebuilder and various acoustic releases. Long-time fan Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) specifically asked Wino to perform on his all-star Probot album, released in 2004. In 2012, Wino rejoined Saint Vitus until the worldwide cry for The Obsessed could no longer be denied, and in 2016, he reunited the band once and for all and has been kicking ass and taking names ever since. Drummer Brian “Dawg” Costantino joined the band at this time. The band signed to Relapse Records and recorded 2017’s Sacred, an album showing The Obsessed back with pure vengeance, bringing the band back to venues and festival stages around the world.

In 2022, the band became a four-piece with the addition of Chris Angleberger on bass and Jason Taylor on guitar. They have been touring heavily since and have been seen on USA and European festival stages such as Hellfest, Freak Valley Festival, Snowblind Festival and Desertfest. The band’s latest record, Gilded Sorrow, was released in early 2024 on Ripple Music and lauded as a "must-listen for fans of the genre and a compelling entry point for newer voyagers into the world of doom" by Metal Hammer and "the best the band has ever sounded" by Ghost Cult Magazine.

The Obsessed welcomed heavy rock titan Bob Pantella (also Monster Magnet) to the lineup as their new drummer in 2025, marking a new chapter in their legacy. Now, in 2026, the band has signed to Heavy Psych Sounds and is working on their new album, which release date is yet to be announced. The Obsessed are here to stay. "IF IT AIN’T HEAVY… IT AIN’T SHIT!!!"

Frontman Scott "Wino" Weinrich declares: "We are very happy to announce The Obsessed signing with the premier hard rock label Heavy Psych Sounds! The Obsessed is currently finishing the next full-length record, which will be released with HPS. Stay tuned, and thanks to all who believe."

US Godfather Of Doom Scott "Wino" Weinrich to release new solo album "Create Or Die" on October 24th via Ripple Music; first single available!

US doom and heavy metal icon Scott "Wino" Weinrich — the voice of The Obsessed, Saint Vitus, and Spirit Caravan — rises again with his fiercely anticipated fourth solo album "Create Or Die" this October 24th via Ripple Music, and unleashes the first single "New Terms" today.

"When a friend ended a letter to me with the phrase ‘Create Or Die’, I realized that simple slogan summed up my philosophy completely. Whether it’s making music or art, that’s what I do. It’s what I live for."

Embrace the haunting Celtic vibe of new single New Terms

Legendary doom metal icon Scott "Wino" Weinrich (The Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan) strips it down to the raw essence on his new solo album. What began as an intimate, unplugged journey soon demanded the fiery pulse of drums and electric guitars, resulting in a powerful blend of haunting introspection and unshakable conviction.

These songs are personal, passionate commentaries on life, delivered with Wino’s signature grit and soul. Featuring contributions from close friends and the unwavering support of Ripple Music, this album is a testament to the creed he’s lived by: create or die. He says: "There are songs on this record that are old and new, as sometimes I carry song ideas around for years before I can call them finished. For others, when concept, music, and lyrics come together right then and there, that's what I call the divine inspiration."

About the first single "New Terms", Wino comments: "In my head, I had always heard the Irish bodhrán drum — a traditional instrument I love — on this tune. I mentioned this to my engineer and friend Frank Marchand. It turns out that for years, Frank had been the sound engineer for the enormously successful traditional yet modern Irish folk band We Banjo Three. He suggested sending the track to them and having the brothers lay down the drum and a traditional Irish banjo. They were glad to do it, dug the song, and here it is. I want to thank Frank Marchand, Fergal Scahill, and Enda Scahill for making this song shine!"

"Create Or Die" was produced and engineered by Franck Marchand and Wino. Mastered by Alan Douches. It will be issued on vinyl, CD and digital formats on October 24th, with preorders available now via Ripple Music.

WINO "Create Or Die" - Out October 24th on Ripple Music (LP/CD/digital) - PREORDER

Wino formed his first band The Obsessed in 1978, starting the reign of “heavy and slow” decades before doom grew into a flourishing worldwide genre unto itself. A few years later, he moved to California to join Saint Vitus, with whom he released the seminal ‘Born Too Late’ (1986), one of the most powerful statements in doom’s early history, with Wino’s raspy, heartfelt and punk-charged vocals booming loudly above the crowd of howling, gimmicky Ozzy copycats.

Following a reformation of The Obsessed and a brief major-label flirtation in the early 90s, which included a piledriving update of Black Sabbath's "The Wizard" alongside Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Rob Halford, Wino formed yet another influential outfit, Spirit Caravan. The new band fused his trademark sludgy churn with an increased soulfulness, beginning to lay the groundwork for his eventual exploration of acoustic and expansive songwriting. During this time, Dave Grohl also invited Wino to join his all-star Probot project alongside Lemmy Kilmister, King Diamond, Max Cavalera and other notables.

Numerous world tours with his various bands later, the creative source remained inexhaustible as Wino embarked on a new direction with the release of his solo debut, ‘Punctuated Equilibrium’, quickly followed by a second solo LP ‘Adrift’ in 2010, a series of collaborations with German folk songwriter Conny Ochs, and ‘Forever Gone’ in 2020. Wino embarked on extensive European and North American tours as a solo act, continuing to maintain his thriving solo output even with the arrival of a much-heralded and welcomed re-constitution of The Obsessed formed for the third time in 2017. The Obsessed, now a 4-piece, have toured extensively since 2020, and released their latest studio album “Gilded Sorrow” to great acclaim in 2023 on Ripple Music.

Today, Wino is respected over the world as the godfather of doom and one of underground heavy music’s most revered lifers. Worldwide festivals like Roadburn, Hellfest, Psycho Las Vegas, Desertfest, Maryland Deathfest, Rock Hard Fest, Monolith On The Mesa and countless others keep inviting Wino back through his various sonic incarnations year after year.

US Doom Royalty THE OBSESSED announces Bob Pantella (Monster Magnet, The Atomic Bitchwax) as new drummer; fall European tour announced!

Iconic architects of American doom metal THE OBSESSED announce a seismic shift behind the kit as drummer Brian Costantino steps away, passing the torch to none other than Bob Pantella—the powerhouse percussionist known for his crushing work with Monster Magnet and The Atomic Bitchwax. The band will embark on an extensive European tour including several festival appearances this fall.

As the band bids farewell to one brother in arms, they welcome heavy rock titan Bob Pantella, whose explosive energy and veteran prowess promise to ignite The Obsessed’s signature sound with fresh, primal fire. Says frontman Scott "Wino" Weinrich: “After The Obsessed drummer Brian Costantino recently stepped away from the band due to personal reasons, we are very happy to welcome Bob Pantella into The Obsessed. I have known Bob for many years and have always admired his skills behind the drums, and after our initial jam together, we are inspired and ready to rock. You may already know him from his other excellent bands The Atomic Bitchwax, Monster Magnet and Raging Slab. We are proud to welcome Bob into The Obsessed.“

The Obsessed returned last year after a seven-year absence with their acclaimed new album "Gilded Sorrow" on independent Californian label Ripple Music. Lauded as a "must-listen for fans of the genre and a compelling entry point for newer voyagers into the world of doom" by Metal Hammer and "the best the band has ever sounded" by Ghost Cult Magazine, "Gilded Sorrow" is a defiantly abrasive, crushing and straightforward album that has already left an indelible mark on the heavy music landscape. The newly forged lineup will storm Europe this fall to perform their 1994 cornerstone album "The Church Within" in its entirety, including appearances at Desertfest, Up In Smoke and Keep It Low festivals.

Scott “Wino” Weinrich is a living legend. In a way, he is the American version of Lemmy and shares many traits with the late, much-beloved metal icon. He’s always been a rebel, loner and an outsider in an outsider scene, pursuing his music without regard for popularity or acceptance. In the process, he came to be considered one of the early pioneers of American doom. All of this began when he founded THE OBSESSED back in the 70s, then pursued through his many other outfits such as Saint Vitus or Spirit Caravan. As a key part of the 80s Washington/Maryland music scene, his music earned the respect of metal, punk and crossover fans alike while often being dubbed doom metal. Looking back, it was just gritty, street-wise American metal with a cynical bent and psychedelic flair, and this is what made him the unique and timeless heavy music icon he is today.

THE OBSESSED was formed in the late 1970s in Potomac, Maryland by legendary guitarist Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan). The band spawned in the realm of musicians/artists such as Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, The Dictators, and The Stooges. The earliest lineup consisted of Wino, bassist Mark Laue, guitarist John Reese, and drummer Dave Flood. In 1983, Wino took over vocal duties and the band became a three-piece to record the Sodden Jackal EP. The band broke up in the late 80s after Wino moved to California to join Saint Vitus. At that time, a German label, Hellhound Records, and the booking agency that had signed Saint Vitus, released The Obsessed, originally recorded in 1985, prompting Wino to reform THE OBSESSED. After multiple lineup changes, the band signed to Columbia Records in 1994 to release their third and final album, The Church Within. Despite highly acclaimed reviews, they would break up following the release, seeing Wino forming Spirit Caravan (then Shine) and other projects.

In September 2011, THE OBSESSED returned to the stage at Roadburn Festival with The Church Within‘s legendary lineup of Wino, Greg Rogers, and Guy Pinhas. The band played a few more reunion shows over the next couple of years, including Hellfest Open Air in 2012 and Maryland Deathfest XI in May 2013 with bassist Reid Raley. Wino announced the full-time return of the band iin March 2016 and the band’s official signing to Relapse Records to record the follow-up to The Church Within. The new lineup originally consisted of Spirit Caravan bassist Dave Sherman and Wino’s longtime friend and former road crew member Brian Costantino (drums). On October 31st, 2016, Wino announced a new lineup change, including Bruce Falkinburg (bass) and Seraphim (guitar), making it the first time the band had been a four-piece in over thirty-five years.

In 2017, THE OBSESSED unleashed Sacred, the band’s first studio album in over twenty years, further pushing the band into the annals of heavy metal history. After a few years on the road, the lineup stabilized around Brian Costantino on drums, Chris Angleberger on bass, Jason Taylor on guitar, and Scott "Wino" Weinrich at the helm. In the winter of 2024, the iconic foursome embraced the new decade in doom with the release of their awaited fifth album "Gilded Sorrow" as part of their collaboration with Californian label Ripple Music and their return to the stage forefront through several North American and European tours and festival appearances.

Review

Gilded Sorrow is the first album from Doom Metal legends The Obsessed in seven years and the band have teamed up with iconic Hard Rock label Ripple Music for this release and it’s perhaps the most perfect match you can have within the Doom/Stoner Metal scene. There’s been a few lineup changes since their 2017 release Stranger Things with Chris Angleberger and Jason Taylor joining on Bass and Rhythm Guitar respectively.

Wino is in fine rebellious form throughout Gilded Sorrow and he takes aim at almost every aspect of modern day American life and adds troubling moments from his own life on this album. This is a different sounding The Obsessed compared to their previous album. As this album is more concise with a classic Punk Rock edge which we haven’t heard since the band’s earliest days. However, the classic Doom and Stoner Metal swagger is still there within each of the individual tracks with WIno’s trademark spiky and hard edged lyrics embracing the OUTLAW and OUTSIDER lifestyle that Wino has lived within his entire lifetime and over the last five decades of music.

The music here is delivered with aggressive confidence and with a more melodic attitude. The record even sees The Obsessed venture into Progressive and Psychedelic waters with certain parts of the album. Though, the record is at its best when Wino takes aim at modern day culture and offers his own frank and forthright views which prove too controversial for some to hear. However, Wino has never been afraid to shy away from making his feelings and views known throughout his legendary career.

Standout tracks on the album are: Daughter Of An Echo, It’s Not OK, Gilded Sorrow, Stoned Back To The Bomb Age and Wellspring - Dark Sunshine. As these tracks are the most hard hitting on the album and even sees The Obsessed playing sounds we’ve never heard from them before. You can expect to hear Distorted Sounds, Psych Doom and moments of Drone which The Obsessed blend into long drawn out Post-Doom/Post-Stoner jams on Gilded Sorrow and Stoned Back To The Bomb Age.

The Obsessed are the original purveyors of Streetwise Doom or Street Level Doom and they prove once again they’re the masters of this style of Doom Metal with that thrilling Heavy Metal quality that most bands cannot match. There’s a sly dark sense of humour that appears within the lyrics which makes the music sound more real.

Gilded Sorrow has the potential to be one of the most important and distinctive Doom Metal albums to be released this year or any that year for that matter. This is another classic release from The Obsessed and this will no doubt be regarded as one of their albums to date. Add this album to your collection as soon as possible. End Of.

Words by Steve Howe

Jason Taylor From Doom/Stoner Metal Legends THE OBSESSED - Favourite Albums Of 2023

Jason Taylor from Doom/Stoner Metal Icons THE OBSESSED picks his favourite albums of 2023.

I've been a huge fan of Jason's work ever since I reviewed his former band's SIERRA debut album way back in 2013. I've interviewed Jason multiple times over the years and I was pleased as anyone when he joined the ranks of The Obsessed.

The Obsessed are releasing their eagerly awaited and much anticipated new album Gilded Sorrow on 16th February 2024 via Ripple Music. Gilded Sorrow is a masterclass of modern day Doom/Stoner Metal and will no doubt turn heads when it's unleashed upon the world.

However, this article is about Jason's favourite records of 2023. Here's Jason's choices and the reasons why.

Mars Red Sky - Dawn of the Dusk

If it’s got big riffs, strange beautiful vocals, drama, grandiosity and a groovy vibe I’m gonna like it. This album has all of that and more. Had the chance to play with them way back when I was in other bands and a few times recently with The Obsessed in New Mexico and Spain. It’s amazing how they pull off the grandiosity of the albums live, and as a three piece. They’re a very special band and definitely one you need to see live.

I was given a copy of Dawn of the Dusk before the release date and I was blown away listening in headphones while doing the dishes. My dishes never looked so clean.

The guitar solo in Carnival Man is so full of emotion and gets me every time I hear it; much like the chorus of Hovering Satellites from the Stranded in Arcadia album. Instant goosebumps.

Baroness - Stone

The Red and Blue albums were hugely influential to me, but I never quite got into the other albums. This one got my full attention immediately and am looking forward to seeing them live at some point with the new lineup. Proggy and heavy in all the right ways and the tones are top notch.

Danava - Nothing But Nothing

Danava rip so hard. Was worth the wait for this full length.

Hippie Death Cult - Helichrysum

First seen this band at Ripple Fest Texas the year The Obsessed played. They’ve got such great stage presence and Eddie’s a phenomanal guitar player. I listen to his solos and he makes me want to pick up the guitar and play. Super well crafted songs and solos that go way beyond just soloing over riffs.

Their past albums are great, but once I heard Laura take over vocal duties with the single “Nice to Know You” I got really excited to hear an album with her vocals instead. No offense to the previous singer, but it would be great to hear those first few albums rerecorded and replaced with her voice.

Helichrysum is a killer album and I think a great place to start if you haven’t listened to them before.

Auralayer - Thousand Petals

Southern sludgy Sabbath-esque doom with a psychedelic twist. Great band and I imagine we’ll be seeing them on all the stoner/doom festivals soon. Phillip Cope mixed and mastered it, so you know it’s gonna be good.

King Buffalo - Live at Burning Man

The Burden of Restlessness is hands down one of my favorite albums. Ever. I’ve listened to it countless times and it was the soundtrack to my life while I was going through a pretty rough time. It’s cool hearing tracks off of this album being played live at a festival like Burning Man. I can only imagine how cool it must have been with the “peace & love & LSD” vibes that go around festivals like that.

About the song, frontman Scott "Wino" Weinrich says: "This song is about and dedicated to all the loud mouth keyboard warriors, and so-called "friends" who steal from you, conveniently forget about debts, stab you in the back, instigate Internet rumours, talk shit in the press, while being the first to run away from any face to face confrontations. Simply, these people and their actions suck and "It's not OK". Enough said."

In 1983, Wino took over vocal duties and the band became a three-piece to record the Sodden Jackal EP, not long after they disbanded. At that time, a German label, Hellhound Records, and the booking agency that had signed SAINT VITUS, released The Obsessed, originally recorded in 1985, prompting Wino to reform THE OBSESSED.

After multiple line-up changes, the band signed to Columbia Records in 1994 to release their third and final album, The Church Within. Despite highly acclaimed reviews, THE OBSESSED would breakup following the release, seeing Wino forming SPIRIT CARAVAN (then SHINE) and other projects. In September 2011, THE OBSESSED returned to the stage at Roadburn Festival with The Church Within‘s legendary line-up (featuring Wino, Greg Rogers, and Guy Pinhas). Wino announced the full-time return of THE OBSESSED in March 2016 and the band official signed to Relapse Records. About WITCHROT:

Formed in Toronto in 2018, WITCHROT was founded by Lea Reto (vocals) & Peter Turik (Guitar). After some international press over band disputes, betrayals, and a temporary break-up that made them the most famous band in the world (for a day...), the band re-formed with a new line-up. Together they recorded their debut full-length Hollow (2021) and this year's Live In the Hammer. More recently, Nick “Nido” Dolphin and Patrick Sherrard have joined the band on bass and keys, respectively. For this tour, the special guest drummer is Myles Deck of Cauldron.

About THE DEATH WHEELERS:

Heavily inspired by the aesthetics and ethos of bikesploitation movies such as The Wild Angels, Werewolves on Wheels and Psychomania, THE DEATH WHEELERS seek to glorify this unsung era of movie making through their sordid sounds. Taking musical cues from rock’s greats such as DAVIE ALLAN, THE CRAMPS, MOTORHEAD, THE STOOGES and GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, THE DEATH WHEELERS perpetrate the tradition of heaviness by making zero compromises when it comes to laying down the groove. Through their bare bone, stripped down, jammy approach of their very own brand of sleaze n’ roll, this instrumental Canadian quartet pushes the listeners to their deepest, filthiest carnal/sexual desires.

WINO: The Documentary (Film Review)

Release Date: May 13th 2023. Film Company Details: New Terms Productions. Formats: DD/DVD

Credits

Director/Producer/Editor - Sharlee Patches

Review

If anyone deserves to have a full length documentary to be made about them is Scott “WINO” Weinrich and this film delivers on that premise. WINO is a legend within the Heavy Metal and Hard Rock scenes with his active participation of the respective scenes coming close to fifty years now.

WINO: The Documentary is made by Sharlee Patches who provides an uncompromising and unflinching style of film-making with a Punk Rock spirit. The movie is not overly produced and matches the DIY aesthetics that WINO has been known for all of the bands and project’s he’s participated with. The film is unapologetic and highly controversial in places which the film doesn’t shy away from. As the film boldly shows a clip from 2012 where WINO predicts a man-made epidemic is forthcoming and the worldwide government plans to inoculate the population. Fast forward to 2020 and WINO still holds these views and he doesn’t mince his words.

However, I knew what to expect of WINO’s personal and political views with the many great bands and classic albums he’s released over the last fifty years or so. WINO has always been a revolutionary and a free thinker within this Heavy Metal scene. Whilst his music can be vastly dark, his music can also be very uplifting and even life affirming.

This film has contributions from famous folks that WINO has worked with over the years and famous people who are fans. You have contributions from people such as Dave Grohl, Henry Rollins, FUGAZI and Phil Anselmo stating how they’re fans of WINO and commenting what an awesome guitar player there is and pointing out WINO probably doesn’t even realise this.

However, the film truly comes alive when Sharlee interviews and features contributions from his close circle of friends, family and most importantly - THE FANS. The view of the fans makes this documentary truly work as they all state - WINO is a truly humble soul and honest wonderful human being who would give you the shirt off his back. The film showcases this aspect many times with uplifting examples from fans of WINO’s never-ending list of projects such as Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Planet Caravan and many others.

There isn’t a narrative as such for the film. As the film chronicles all the projects that WINO has been involved over the years with many of the key players who WINO played with at that time. The film is highly complimentary of the great man himself with contributions from Jason Taylor, Brian Constantino, Jimmy Bower, Dave Sherman and Bobby Liebling.

The film includes all the classic hits that WINO is known for and the soundtrack is amazing with vintage clips of WINO performing many of these great tracks LIVE. The quality of these clips varies but all undeniably showcase that a wonderful performer that WINO really is.

There are some moments that could make for uncomfortable viewing for some such as WINO’s interaction with a female fan on stage and WINO’s intake of illegal substances that took me by surprise. However, Sharlee showcases some tender magical moments with WINO enjoying time with his mother, his three children and interactions with his fans.

The documentary ends on a sombre and uplifting moment as Sharlee asks WINO why he has quit Alcohol and Drugs which he advises to live a healthier and longer health style. Which is great to hear and showcases the great man may have mellowed and is now living for the right reasons but he’s still a beacon of truth for the Doom/Stoner Metal community.

With the promise of a new The Obsessed album on the horizon, I’m grateful WINO is still here and that he’s around for a long time to release more great music in the future.

Sharlee does a stellar job in creating a beautifully raw, unflinching and highly unapologetic film that pulls no punches from start to finish. This is one of the best musical documentaries I’ve seen since Such Hawks Such Hounds. WINO: The Documentary should be essential viewing for all followers of the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal scene.

WINO: The Documentary is a true original, a bit like the great man himself.
