Recorded at home during this cursed summer heat—which grows increasingly oppressive—the EP was crafted to capture the sense of suffocation and faintness felt beneath the scorching sun of a season that is becoming ever more unbearable for humankind.

Review

Drone/Doom/Sludge Metal collective Void Sinker leaves the comforting sounds of the ocean that we experienced on their last album and returns to the cold, desolate and harsh realities of the Cosmic Void. Their new album Cycles fully embraces the Drone folklore and mythology with heavy monolithic tones that are quite slow-paced in nature. As before, Void Sinker emits creative themes influenced by the likes of SUNN 0))), BONG and CONAN though sticking closely to their own rules they’ve created with previous albums released under the Void Sinker name.

The record lasts around fifty three minutes and is perhaps Void Sinker’s most sprawling and deliberately slow album to date. The tone is quite monolithic with deep instrumental passages having a dark pretence and essence to them. Sounds have a weighted grounded approach with that burgeoning thick AMPLIFIER sound perfectly tapping into the LOW & SLOW environment with the stunning opening track of Hanged. There is a down-tuned progressive theme which allows creative mastermind Guglielmo Allegro once again explore the bleak Ambient leaning Post-Doom and Post-Metal surroundings that manifests into some nightmarish style of Stoner Metal soundscapes with layers of FUZZ METAL feedback coming at you from all angles.

Void Sinker expertly taps into the Post-Industrial theme on tracks such as Cycle, Isolated and Dreadful that taps into the gloomy theatrics of a classic Science Fiction movie soundtrack such as the “ALIEN” franchise. There is a sublime “HORROR” and “SCIENCE FICTION” element that fully comes into play on tracks such as Cycle and Isolated where I feel that Guglielmo may be inspired by certain soundtracks that he grew up with or was inspired by. The sudden sharpness of the down-tuned and drone energy does move into heavier, faster and aggressive waters along the way with the album having some intense and crisp production values especially with the haunting sound effects appearing in the background.

Cycles can be quite solitary with the sludgy movements of certain instrumental passages and how Guglielmo delivers the whole flow of the album. Sometimes it’s not very subtle but it’s how Void Sinker plays out the musical momentum that pays homage to some real grounded characteristics of the Doom, Drone and Sludge Metal underground scene. With a wonderfully observed psychedelic and kinetic energy developing within the later stages of the album, Void Sinker allows the album to breathe organically especially when the heaviest and droned out sounds appear on the album.

Guglielmo Allegro has got his creative mission statement developed down to a fine art with his “Void Sinker” persona but it’s always great to hear him try new things and fully challenge himself with each album he releases either under his Void Sinker or Nightscape personas. Cycles is a gloomy and highly claustrophobic release that demands your full attention that will surely put you through a punishing regime of intense Drone/Doom Metal once more.

Review

One man Drone/Doom wrecking crew Void Sinker returns with their sixth full length album Depth which continues with creative mastermind Guglielmo Allegro’s deep fascination with the ocean and aquatic world that’s dominated his musical landscape of the last couple of years. The sound once again is haunting with brooding Drone textures developing with the darker depths of the ambient surroundings that Void Sinker purposely takes a slow time to deliver. However, this is the style of music that Void Sinker has used for the majority of their releases. Guglielmo does change musical direction with a lo-fi brooding style of Doom Metal that has elements of SUNN 0))), CONAN and ELECTRIC WIZARD.

Depth lasts for around eighty minutes in length spread across four tracks which gives Guglielmo plenty of opportunity to challenge your patience for long drawn out DRONE METAL passages. With a neverending style of down-tuned and amplified DRONE heaviness, there’s an undercurrent of bleak progressive elements forming very early on within the epic opening title track. The later stages of the track become heavier, aggressive and even stripped back with Void Sinker allowing the listener to explore the dark undercurrent of Sludge/Stoner Metal melodies forming quietly into the distance.

Void Sinker does play with a cold and highly calculated precision where the music could even be classed as methodical which becomes more part of the action on tracks such as Dragged, Drowned and Dredged. Guglielmo perfectly captures the bleak experience of reaching the bottom of the ocean and not knowing if you’re going to make it out alive. That sense of fear transfers over to real musical mention with Void Sinker developing heavier, progressive and emotionally charged sounds that delves further into the DRONE METAL abyss. 

There are moments with Void Sinker playing with a more riff-centric sound with eerie shadows of Ambient Metal, Post-Rock, Stoner Metal and Blackened Sludge starting to fully emerge. The standout tracks on Depth are most definitely Depth and Dredged. As this is where Guglielmo creates the most interesting ideas and themes on the album though the other tracks perhaps the heaviest and distorted grooves on Depth. As with previous Void Sinker releases, this can be a tough and challenging listen but this album is perhaps more about endurance with the record running for around eighty minutes in length.

Void Sinker once again has delivered a brutally tough and emotionally destructive record that brings some of the most thrilling Droned Out Metal sounds around from within the underground scene.

Review

Creatures is the new EP from Drone/Doom/Stoner Metal collective Void Sinker and follows the same sonic trajectory as their recent album Echoes From The Deep. The sound is perhaps heavier and riff-orientated with elements of Sludge and Post-Metal making an aggressive appearance on different stages of the EP. The EP lasts for around forty five minutes spread across two tracks which allows Guglielmo Allegro to spread his Drone Metal creative ideas and thoughts against a backdrop of murky rhythms and aquatic vibes that holds everything together.

The added use of Ambient and Oceanic sounds is most definitely influenced by Void Sinker’s previous record with a fast-paced narrative leaning into some heavy thick SLUDGE METAL grooves with a distinctive Psychedelic rhythm emerging from behind the scenes. Both tracks of Kraken and Naga are superbly constructed and played throughout with different levels of distorted sounds and aquatic soundscapes perhaps inspired by the likes of SUNN 0))), Mastodon and Neurosis for that extra level of Prog Metal heaviness.

The production values have a stripped back appeal which is quite different to Void Sinker’s previous recorded efforts. Everything sounds more urgent with the overlapping sludgy guitars perhaps being too soulful at times though the Drone Metal passages is where the real power lies for Guglielmo Allegro to prove once more why he’s one of the underground scene’s most impressive creative minds currently out there. 

The last record was quite a bleak and pitch-black affair but Creatures returns to a more action packed sound first heard within Void Sinker’s earlier releases. There are moments of Post-Black grooves that merge the areas of Doom Metal and Sludge Metal into a more ethereal and monolithic tone that is simply beautiful to fully witness at times. If creating SONIC and AMPLIFIER DISTORTED melodies was ever considered an art form then Void Sinker would be in a league of his own.

Creatures is another epic sounding record and stylish effort from Void Sinker that should allow Guglielmo Allegro to expand his “CULT” appeal even further within the underground scene.

Review

Echoes From The Deep is the fifth full length album from Instrumental/Sludge/Drone/Doom entity Void Sinker which takes the listener into another lengthy epic trip into a sense of gloomy despair. Guglielmo Allegro the creative mastermind behind Void Sinker once again demonstrates another exercise in minimal atmospherics with pounding Ambient movements.

The album lasts seventy minutes across five epic tracks with the shortest being on for under ten minutes in length. This record is for the serious Drone Metal connoisseur as nothing changes suddenly with Void Sinker keeping in the same creative line as bands such as BONG and SUNN 0))). There are echoes of gloomy vocals that add levels of mysterious movement behind the more abstract and abrasive parts of the record on each passing note. 

Void Sinker does add moments of downbeat Cosmic surroundings where the tone has a creepier and highly volatile style of Ambient and Psychedelic sounds being played at a very slow pace. The overlapping instruments create a sombre tone with the distorted sludgy guitars allowing this to be one of the most distinctive and possibly “LESS IS MORE” based records that Guglielmo Allegro has released to date.

Opening tracks Cetus and Serpens convey a sense of personal freedom where there’s minimal upbeat movements with Void Sinker more than happily staying within the darkness of Drone Metal and the seedy Post-Black Metal flourishes that constantly take absolute control. It’s beautifully played but one that’s violently opaque and morbid at the same time. Though, the level of dedication that Guglielmo puts into his musical craft has to be commended.

Third track Hollow is aptly named as the song is very one note with a singular course of action for the most part with music switching from Ambient, Drone and Post-Rock but over a very long time frame. There are shades of psychedelic imagery trying to creep through but Void Sinker sticks firmly to his minimal and bleak sounding mission statement.

Void Sinker springs into life and snaps out of his Drone Metal solitude with the best tracks on the record with Lacerta and Andromeda embracing a heavier, simpler and riff-centric style of music whilst keeping within the overall Drone context the first half of the album settled for. There’s a lot more aggression and recognizable melodies here with Void Sinker showing a little more “LIGHT vs DARK” momentum which made me appreciate the album a whole lot more.

Echoes From The Deep is quite a hard album to fully admire and appreciate with this perhaps being Guglielmo Allegro’s most difficult record to date. And that’s a good thing as it shows Guglielmo’s not afraid to mess around with his music even if it means a mixed critical reception or defying his fan base expectations. He’s fully in control as VOID SINKER and this is perhaps the most dangerous side of his creative persona that I’ve heard to date.

This is an excellent record to experience if you’re in the mood for a challenging listen which even I struggled with at times but I’m glad I’ve listened to the album and I’m still looking for the next bleak, surreal and challenging musical odyssey that Guglielmo will release under the banner of VOID SINKER.

Excellent and Highly Recommended though only for dedicated followers of the DRONE METAL scene.

Review

Solaris the third release from Drone/Doom Collective Void Sinker this year with creative mastermind Guglielmo Allegro on inspired form. Nothing much changed with Void Sinker’s creative delivery on Solaris with the music being quite dense, progressive and drawn out which is the same journey as the other records that Guglielmo has released this year. Though, I will give Void Sinker credit for portraying a more progressive, denser and aggressive approach with the sound being quite morbid despite the trippy cosmic surroundings being at the forefront of the record.

The EP is made up of three lengthy compositions with Solaris, Lowering and Boiled running near to thirteen and fifteen minutes in length. The music is quite abstract and fast-paced especially when Void Sinker pays homage to bands such as CONAN, UFOMAMMUT and SUNN 0))). The industrial landscapes appear very early on within Solaris that builds an eerie world building atmosphere where the end of the world is never too far behind. Production values are quite sharp but with a slight underdeveloped DIY vibe which matches the whole one-man band aesthetic that Guglielmo brilliantly surrounds himself with each Void Sinker release.

There’s a neverending supply of ambient themes, tones and ghoulish soundscapes appearing from time-to-time that could be considered as vocals from the darkest depths of space trying to make contact with humanity. It’s an impressive mix of different sounds, tones and highly atmospheric melodies which one again transforms into a more riff-centric style on the later stages of each track especially within Lowering and Boiled.

Solaris once again allows Void Sinker to project his darkest DRONED out desires into a massive wall of Doom/Sludge Metal instrumental heaviness that leaves you wanting to hear more. This is perhaps Void Sinker’s most abstract release with the music not being quite as HEAVY compared to previous records but that doesn’t stop this being an outstanding slice of Drone/Doom Metal from one of the best creative one-man bands currently within the scene.

Review

Oxygen is the first full length album from Instrumental Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal artist Void Sinker and his eighth overall under the Void Sinker name. The record follows a similar destructive pattern to their 2024 release Stuck and is perhaps considered a spiritual successor to that record. I wouldn’t call it a sequel as Oxygen is populated by heavier and thicker slabs of Drone Metal amongst the crazed Instrumental Sludge/Stoner Metal sounds. With Guglielmo leaning heavily into the Cosmic Doom style of music that’s inspired by the likes of CONAN and SLOMATICS yet again. 

There is a sense of bewilderment within Oxygen which allows Void Sinker to steady the ship with longer drawn out sounds, noises and trippy effects with the music still being superbly HEAVY which comes into focus on the mammoth opening track of Satellite. The track is very slow going with a harsh DRONE backdrop of overlapping guitars, pounding drums and subtle Psychedelic mid-tempo changes which allows the Space Rock effects to make themselves known. 

The later stages of Satellite veer into the darker stratosphere of Drone Metal which leaves you questioning your sanity with that feeling lasting well into the rest of the album. The other tracks held on Oxygen do become quite OPAQUE and heavy handed with Guglielmo perfecting his own blend of CAVEMAN DOOM or COSMIC DOOM when the spaced out interludes of down-tuned Sludge, Doom and Drone formulate for another Progressive style music. The music is played at a devilishly slow-to-mid pace with the record having sudden outbursts of slightly faster grooves which is quite satisfying to hear.

The other standout tracks from Oxygen are Collision and Abyss which sees Void Sinker continue with his destructive style of music with a cold desolate attitude being quite intense and melodies. There are gloomy synths and nightmarish psychedelics to match the cold winter months this time of year ultimately brings. With AMPLIFIER DISTORTION being one of Void Sinker’s main creative tools to delight and scare listeners with, this record does have a certain BONGRIPPER flow and influence which I’ve just noticed after repeated listens. 

Oxygen is another worthwhile and superbly produced album from Void Sinker. I still prefer Stuck as the most definitive VOID SINKER record but Oxygen isn’t too far behind. This one has a more “riff” friendly attitude even if the music is violently passionate with the neverending onslaught of nightmarish COSMIC themes.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

One Man Instrumental Doom/Sludge Metal wrecking crew Void Sinker return with their new album Stuck which is way heavier and more threatening than their last album Sunless. Taking a solemn Drone Metal attitude for the album that is set across three tracks running past the fifty minute mark. Void Sinker takes their time in exploring heavy volumes of Drone, Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal pastures.

The journey is quite slow paced at times with Guglielmo Allegro once again providing a masterclass of AMPLIFIER DISTORTED HEAVINESS and seedy GUITAR REVERB with a slow pounding bass only adding to nasty volume levels which has become a major part of Guglielmo’s work especially over the last couple of record he’s provided under the guise of Void Sinker.

If you’re a fan of Electric Wizard, CONAN, Slomatics and UFOMAMMUT then Stuck is perhaps Void Sinker’s most accessible record to date going by the dangerous FUZZED UP grooves contained within the excellent opening track of Cold. 

The song COLD slowly builds up a heavy destructive rhythm where FEEDBACK is king and the instrumental attitude draws in bands such as SUNN 0))) and Bongripper. There’s a more caustic COSMIC vibe emitting from the airwaves with Void Sinker playing long drawn out notes and intense down-tuned passages. There’s riffs contained within COLD but their buried under a ton of FUCKED UP monolithic sounding movements which has an essence of Blackened Doom lurking in the background. 

Second track Stuck adds a gloomy apocalyptic measure to the forefront of the heightened down-tuned grooves that slowly emits dangerous COSMIC energy to the masses. With the drumming becoming ever more present on this track that forges a constant battle with the sludgy guitars that brings a powerful and creative dynamic that’s very hard to describe.

Channelling the dangerous influence of SUNN 0))) once more, Void Sinker decides to add a slightly faster sound into the mix before venturing into a heavy industrial movement which allows the record to be considered one of COSMIC HORROR or perhaps a record with an unforgiving destructive nature yet again. 

The final track of Repel sees Void Sinker experimenting with various Psychedelic measures on the later stages of the track which reminds me of the sound that the legendary UFOMAMMUT created with their landmark album EVE though this time is more slower and possibly stripped back. This track is the heaviest part of the album and perhaps the most riff-centric style of music that Guglielmo has ever delivered. 

Stuck is another outstanding slice of underground Drone based mayhem from Void Sinker who once again delivers the goods with his own original style of ear-shattering and planet destroying based Doom, Drone, Sludge and Stoner Metal that leaves you wanting to hear more.

Instrumental Doom/Drone/Sludge Metal solo project Void Sinker releases their new EP Sunless which is their sixth release since Oct 2023. This is the first time I’m reviewing one of their releases but I do own quite a few of their releases with Sunless the one that has impressed me the most. Void Sinker is inspired by the likes of CONAN, SLOMATICS and BONGRIPPER with a dangerously LOW & SLOW blend of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal filtered through a dark avalanche of DRONE textures.

The music is constantly full of dread and bleak monolithic volume which could have easily come from the SUNN 0))) playbook of DRONE sounds. Void Sinker adds an eerie Post-Black metal tone to the stunning opening track of Sunless which superbly brings in a depressing opaque outlook to the whole musical climate. The long drawn out sounds and multi-layered doomgaze guitars work effortlessly against the Ambient rhythms and Progressive SONIC textures.

Sunless does have an orchestral quality coming from the aggressive sludgy guitars that brings a Psychedelic and Ambient nature to the forefront that Guglielmo Allegro (the creative mastermind behind Void Sinker) is always feels like he’s five steps ahead in front conjuring up more dark depressing DOOMEDELIC forces. 

The EP does have small amounts of extended instrumental beats lurking in the background where I do wish they would become slightly more prominent where I get my wish fully granted within the standout second track of Moonless. A track that’s perhaps more Doom/Stoner Metal orientated whilst keeping within the creative boundaries of the epic first track which shows a stark and different contrast to each other.

Sunless has an air of brooding mystery throughout which has become quite a dominant theme of the last few Void Sinker releases that I’ve noticed. The production values are excellent and is perhaps Void Sinker’s strongest record to date. 

Void Sinker are without doubt one of the heaviest and most interesting SOLO METAL acts working within the underground scene today. Perhaps not as prolific as similar acts within the underground scene, however he’s miles ahead of the competition on technical ability and creativity which Sunless proves beyond doubt.
