Review:
Thralldom
are not a band I had encountered until I was offered the chance to
review their new record "Time Will Bend Into Horror", but
the fact that it's a side project relating to Unearthly Trance was
enough to convince me to give it a spin.
And
I'm glad I did.
That
said it definitely took me a few listens to get into it as I've
literally spent the last three months listening to nothing but Steven
Wilson records. But that's another story for another day...
If
I had to describe it (and I think we're all agreed that's kind of one
of the features of a review) I would label Thralldom as blackened
sludge. It's a term I hear a lot, and often I think it's used for
bands who just can't decide or don't feel constrained by either
genre.
Whilst
I feel the latter is true in this case the whole record to me is a
perfect mix of both styles and should appeal to fans of either. In
fact it doesn't stop there I even get a kind of punk/rock n roll vibe
in places particularly on the excellent "Dark Grey Mist"
In
all this record has a very hypnotic feel, displayed best on for me
the standout track on the album "Stars And Graves" and the
grim production (intended as a compliment) give the whole affair an
air of menace sadly lacking in a lot of releases these days.
A
great introduction to a great band and I look forward to many
continued plays of this beast of a record.
