Review

Doom/Sludge Metallers TOOMS offer their second album Karst has a lot of great talent behind the scenes bringing the band's nihilistic vision fully to life. You have the legendary Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Pelican, Russian Circles) on mixing duties and mastering handled by the masterful talents of Chris Fielding (Electric Wizard, Conan, Primordial) which makes up for a powerful and destructive combination. TOOMS themselves bring their own dynamically powerful and brutal sound that’s held together by Doom, Sludge, Death Metal, Stoner Metal, Psych and grounded Post-Metallic themes that adds a line of Prog Metal into the mix.

The album has an highly unapologetic sound with TOOMS moving away from their Stoner Metal sound they played briefly on their earlier releases. Karst feels like a band finally discovering the music they were meant to play which is full of death growls, ambient melodies and harsh backdrops that morph into something more cerebral within the stunning opening tracks of Blood Rust Of Cudgel And Quill, Lowlander and Tower Of Silence. You can hear the likes of Mastodon, NEUROSIS, ISIS, Cult of Luna, CONAN, THOU and WEEDEATER being used for creative reference but TOOMS are wise enough to play a seedy backdrop of Post-Metal surroundings which adds extra grit, dirt and pure brutality throughout the album. 

The music is at its most powerful and emotionally gut-wrenching when TOOMS play a style of modern day Post-Metal which is merged with pitch black ferocity with that Death Metal aspect fully shining through with massive amounts of technical beat-downs and psychedelic sounds developing behind the scenes. Some of the instrumental passages have an Industrial Metal and Drone Metal vibe which is laced with that Thrash Metal and Extreme Metal energy that has an ice-cold Post-Black Metal attitude not being too far.

Clean vocals do appear within the record but they’re quite violent when compared to the more extreme styles used for the majority of the album. That may sound strange but TOOMS manage to add another layer of intense violence even within the quieter aspects of the whole album.

Karst moves along at a cracking, aggressive and highly addictive pace with certain sections being quite experimental on the later stages of the record. However, TOOMS actually play a great still of riff-driven music as the album contains a high amount of wonderful instrumental passages which even allowed me to drift quite easily into full on“headbanging” mode that always leave you one thousand percent fully satisfied.

Other standout tracks to check out are: Blue Angel, Drinkvlt, Two Silver Pieces, A Release Of Tension and Physics Beyond The Standard Model. As these moments have some highly original psychedelic tendencies which moves the album into some highly unexpected musical waters you’ll be surprised to fully encounter. 

There’s some perfectly placed dark humour spliced throughout the album which shows that TOOMS know how to have some demonic fun when the time calls for this. Karst is a technically impressive album from the very start with TOOMS proving what great musicians they really are by playing a wide range of different HEAVY METAL sounds that’s mostly told through the power of the Doom/Sludge Metal underground scene. 

KARST can only be described as an absolute MONSTER that’s jam packed with brutal gigantic sounds that destroys everything within its wake. TOOMS have a vivid, expansive and highly unpredictable nature hidden within their music which allows the listener to be part of this brilliantly intense and pissed off musical journey they won’t forget about in a long time to come.

Review

Destroyer is the debut EP from Doom/Sludge Metallers Gorilla Warrior and the record more than lives up to its name with the band creating heavy and pummelling grooves from the very start. You can hear influences such as High On Fire, Mastodon, -(16)- and EyeHateGod. The violent vocals have a great violent touch which allows Gorilla Warrior to UNLEASH HELL ON EARTH from the opening beats of the excellent opening track Destroyer True. From this moment on, the music is played at a super fast pace for the most part with Gorilla Warrior expanding their musical horizons to play a sludgy style of LOW & SLOW instrumental passages within the next two tracks of Summon Ape and Slow Crawl Towards Death.

Gorilla Warrior perfect their brutal AMPLIFIED sounds with the music becoming more melodic and quite primal with small elements of Thrash and Black Metal starting to form. There’s a lot going on within Summon Ape with Gorilla Warrior expanding their own brutal musical style for a harsh destructive atmosphere. The vocals are primal growls and harsh screams but they’re quite easy to understand which is always a good thing. The record does start with small bouts of PROGRESSIVE energy which adds to the overall great mix of different styles of music the band have created here.

With a heavy alliance of LOW & SLOW sounds allowing the sickest and heaviest parts of the record to form on tracks such as Slow Crawl Towards Death and Burn The Crown. This is music perhaps better suited to the dedicated follower of the Doom/Sludge Metal scene rather than a casual listener. As the EP does throw up some EXTREME grooves along the way which I adored even more. 

The EP sounds excellent throughout with intense production values having a violent raw aesthetic for Gorilla Warrior to thrive upon. Destroyer is a superb EP for Gorilla Warrior to introduce themselves to the underground Doom/Sludge Metal community. If you want a record that is violent from the offset and never lets up with an avalanche of PISSED OFF sounds to lose yourself in then DESTROYER is the record for you.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

The Scythe Is Remorseless is the second full album from Sludge/Grind/Crust/Doom/Death Metallers Yersin and it’s quite a brutally aware assault on the senses with Yersin playing a pummelling blend of Psychedelic sounds and bone-crunching Death grooves. The music is aggressive and violently pissed off from the start with Yersin playing a no-holds barred style of Grindcore/Sludge Metal fused with Death/Doom Metal imagery with that classic Blackened Crust flavour showing small elements of Hardcore Punk.

Yersin are from Sunderland located in the North East Of England which is quite close to my hometown of Newcastle Upon Tyne. I’ve known about Yersin for quite some time and I was a fan of their 2020 debut release but The Scythe Is Remorseless is on another level. As Yersin play fast and loose with the rules of Extreme Metal and start playing their blend of highly original Grindcore grooves with that powerfully potent Doom/Sludge Metal element being heard on the early stages of the album on tracks such as: Triumphant, Mouths Like Open Graves and The Scythe Is Remorseless.

The music can be quite hard to adapt at first with the ferocious anger coming from Yersin which sees the band being influenced by heavy hitters such as Napalm Death, Fuck The Fact, THOU and Agoraphobic Nosebleed whilst offering some subtle flashes of delivering subtle and menacing moments of Doom/Sludge Metal riffs amongst the Death/Crust/Grind carnage that Yersin mostly create and play with demonic relish throughout the album.

The instrumental work is nothing short of breathtaking in places especially with massive amounts of thrash beats and grindcore blast beasts. Usually I struggle with Grindcore vocals the best of times but I have to say I fully understood lead vocalist Chris' outstanding vocals. Even when they moved into more extreme levels of harsh grunts and growls. The lyrics came perfectly clear to myself and I do struggle with vocals from the Extreme Metal world. 

Yersin plays some of the filthiest, heaviest and brutal EXTREME guitar sounds I’ve heard quite some time especially on tracks such as The Scythe Is Remorseless, Lust For Crust and Doom. The album is quite brisk running under twenty five minutes in length but that’s part of the course for an album such as this. Yersin doesn't waste a second in playing an album that will no doubt cater more to the masses of the Extreme Metal Underground scene than the normal Doom/Sludge Metal crowd I normally cater for.

However, it’s always good every now and then to leave your comfort zone and experience something that leaves you uncomfortable which is what The Scythe Is Remorseless. Yersin delve into the darkest depths of the Extreme Heavy Metal scene with elements of 1980’s Black Metal and 1990’s Grindcore allowing the record to transform into something unexpected and that’s an intelligent release that oozes violent charm and charisma throughout.

Review:

Abscission is the new album from Doom/Sludge/Post-Metal collective TORPOR and sees the band offer a combination of pitch black melodies, soaring grooves and harsh vocals that are held together by a layer of Post-Metal nihilism. TORPOR have always continued to evolve with every release they’ve created and Abscission is no different with some of their best creative output on this album alone. The record dives right into the Psyche of Progressive Sludge Metal that a first rate Post-Metal band should do with TORPOR playing similar grooves and sounds of bands such as ISIS and Cult Of Luna but with a more ferocious sound.

Opening song Interior Gestures combines Blackened Doom atmospherics with Ambient Post-Rock textures that move into the Sludge/Post-Metal arena with lead vocalist Jon Taylor’s brutal style being open and honest with a more threatening presence that is quite easy to fully understand which gives the song a more uncompromising feel. Ambient and Psychedelic instrumental parts lead the way on the later stages of the track with Lauren’s ghostly voiceover giving a more Gothic and Post-Doom vibe to the song. 

Second song As Shadow Follows Body is another mind-expanding Post-Metal epic running past the nine minute mark. Distorted sounds slowly change into nightmarish Droned Out elements with TORPOR bringing that Pitch-Black mentality to their music which feels like a never ending sense of DREAD and DESPAIR. The music sees TORPOR play a more extreme style of Post-Metal but there’s still a sense of DREAMLIKE quality to their music with the trippy Psychedelic parts that appear beneath the band’s blend of heavy and downtrodden Sludge Metal. The vocals are exquisite yet again with the different styles of harsh growls and clean vocals that appear occasionally. TORPOR starts changing the melodic tone and direction of their music with more soulful styles of Post-Rock appearing for a more Atmospheric feeling. The later stages are more violent, fast-paced and wonderfully chaotic with that aggressive metallic sound allowing TORPOR to play some of the heaviest and most technically impressive sounds on the album.

Third song Accidie opens with an Industrial sound that wouldn’t go amiss from an Author & Punisher album. This song is quite clinical with its delivery which is down to the Industrial Rock/Metal creative approach to the song. TORPOR still retains that Sludge/Post-Metal sound but everything else is given a more Doomed Out makeover that feels orchestrated by NIN in places. The world-weary Psychedelic grooves are more Doom/Post-Rock driven with some of my favourite instrumental parts of the album held within song. The vocals are more extreme but the overlapping of distorted instrumental sounds allows TORPOR to play one of the standout tracks on the album especially when the song takes a more multi-layered approach with that punishing bass driven sound.

Fourth song is an Ambient/Drone/Industrial based song with frantic and down-tuned guitars being more of the Crust Punk world with its eerie style of Industrial breakdowns and mechanically delivered grooves. With a foreboding sense of Doom that’s made possible by the use of sonically driven Synths that feels like having a bad ACID TRIP listening to 90’s Digital Hardcore. One of the most nightmarish and uncompromising tracks held on the album which is made even better by the short running time of the track.

The final track Island Of Abandonment is where TORPOR lays everything on the line with a more theatrical song which moves slowly at its own gloomy Post-Doom beat. The subtle flashes of Psych and Ambient sounds hints at a more violent sonic experience heading our way. TORPOR use that multilayered style of Blackened Doom with a thrilling Industrial edge yet again which leaves the Sludge Metal and Post-Metal aspects of their music to slowly gain traction and ultimately complete dominance of where the song fully ends up becoming. The Black Metal aspect of this track is what makes this to become one of the heaviest songs that TORPOR have released to date with incredible drumming by Simon who is also responsible for the first rate ELECTRONIC parts of the album.

Abscission is one of the most technically impressive and forward thinking releases of the UK Sludge Metal/Post-Metal scene I’ve heard in quite some time. The album has a bleak sounding MONOLITHIC tone that is very hard to ignore that should elevate TORPOR to higher levels within the global Doom, Sludge and Post-Metal scenes.

Simply unmissable. End of.

Review

Murmurations is the new album from Doom/Sludge Metallers Everest Queen and sees the band drift further into the Post-Metal arena compared to their previous album. This album is darker and more daring with the band moving between the Psychedelic Moments of the Doom/Sludge Metal grooves that appear on this album. 

Everest Queen opens the album up with Sunken Thorn. A song that is pitch-black and sees the band have a more Blackened and Progressive approach with their music. Shades of THOU and NEUROSIS can be felt here with a slightly twisted outlook being heard within the lyrical content of the song. The music is quite forward thinking in places with a twinge of Stoner Metal appearing here and there. The vocals are quite forceful and Everest Queen have a more commanding presence to them especially when the Psychedelic sounds appear that sees the riffs become quite plentiful on the later stages of the song.

Second song Of Treachery And Shadows is a more direct affair with a fantastic instrumental sound being played for the first few moments of the song. With the band adding perhaps a more mainstream metal sound that ventures between Post-Rock and Post-Metal with a cool Progressive sound giving way to the brutal harsh vocals when they appear. The song becomes ever more gloomy with the flashy guitars and frantic drumming. I easily understood the harsh growls which was an added bonus. There is a slight Hardcore flow to this song before some epic Progressive and Thrash based guitars show a more aggressive change of pace from the band. 

Third song Murmurations is a different change of pace with ambient sounds and textures merging with a semi-acoustic atmosphere. More Post-Rock compared to the aggressive sounds of the opening two tracks but showing another cool creative side to Everest Queen. There are shades of Nirvana on this track for myself especially with the subtle and powerful drumming and guitar tones.

Fourth song Dormant River feels like two different sounds with the first part being a surreal Psych Rock and Post Rock track with Ambient and Dreamy surreal sounds. The second half sees Everest Queen return to their aggressive and violent sound that flirts between Post-Metal and Blackened Sludge Metal energy. The vocals are demanding but fair with Everest Queen playing to their full creative potential on this track. This is my favourite track on the album as it shows you many different sides to Everest Queen that you wouldn't expect. 

The final two songs of Divergence and The Burial mix and match the different styles of Post-Rock, Psych Rock and Blackened Sludge Metal that evokes memories of YOB and ISIS (The Band) especially on Divergence. Both songs combine for an exciting finish for Everest Queen to impress listeners with their vast musical skills and songwriting ability.

Murmurations is an exciting chapter for Everest Queen to make themselves known with. Some fans may not like the bleak direction the band have taken with this release but this is a first rate album that's boosted by first rate production values.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Year Of Dread is the debut release from Blackened Sludge/Black Metallers Idle Death and with a band operating in such despair and misery you can expect to hear a bleak musical vision that has its roots in Doom Metal and Sludge Metal. The instrumental work moves from modern day Heavy Metal to the more extreme style of music with surprisingly clean vocals on the excellent opening song Fix Me, Heal Me. The lyrics are very hard-edged and the grooves have an alternative feel to the despite the bleakness of the music.

With the majority of the songs running past the six minute mark, Idle Death are quite progressive without actually being labelled as such. With this being a demo, the record is very rough around the edges but one that still possesses excellent production values.

The next two songs Burn Pile and Evil Is Contagious is where Idle Death impresses the most as the Blackened part of their musical vision truly comes into play with superb grooves that have GRIT, STEEL and EXTRA BITE. The cold sounding Psychedelic elements are a cool touch but Idle Death never moves far away from their dark musical background. 

There is a lot to admire on this debut demo release with one being the journey the band takes you upon. There’s nothing subtle about this release. It’s z bleak onslaught of heavy pounding riffs that have a high amount of fast beats and gigantic breakdowns. 

Overall, Year Of Dread is a welcome distraction from the usual Doom/Sludge Metal releases currently out there and showcases a band to definitely keep an eye on for future releases.

Here we have the split release between Doom/Sludge Metallars Ungraven and Legendary Spaced Out Doom/Fuzz/Stoner Rockers Slomatics. Each band provides 3 tracks with Ungraven providing the heavier and darkest moments of the split record and Slomatics being 100% themselves with their trademark style of Cosmic based FUZZ heavy Doom/Stoner Metal.

Ungraven is the new project featuring Jon Paul Davis from UK Doom Metal Heavyweights CONAN who is joined by David Riley (Fudge Tunnel) and Tyler Hodges (TUSKAR). The band are perhaps influenced by 90s Sludge Metal and Groove Metal with bands such as NAILBOMB and Fudge Tunnel coming to mind. You can hear the trademark CONAN guitars from Jon but Ungraven remains its own thing. The music is dark, gloomy and with a slight industrial feel with Jon laying down some of his heaviest vocals in years especially on the excellent opening song - Defeat The Object.

Ungraven offers a varied style of Doom/Sludge Metal which is powered along by a classic undercurrent of Groove Metal which brings a faster and more chaotic approach on the 3 songs Ungraven offer with Onwards She Rides To A Certain Death perhaps being the standout track from their side. This song is very fast-paced with Ungraven offering a more “Crust Punk” type feel with this song though the band switch gears and play a faster style of music towards the end of the song.

The final song from Ungraven is one aggressive slab of Doom/Groove Metal with the band playing a violent offering with bleak lyricism to match. The bleak cinematic tone never waivers and Ungraven remain an uncompromising band of musicians playing music they want to play and taking a no hold barred approach which ultimately leaves you wanting more.

Slomatics side of the split sees the band return to the sound of their earlier albums such as A Hocht and Estron. I was expecting the guys to play a similar style of music from their last acclaimed release Canyons but it’s more akin to their earlier albums. Though, this doesn’t stop Slomatics bringing their “A” game to the party with opening song Kaān being a progressive slab of Cosmic sounds and modern Fuzz based Doom/Stoner Rock. The music moves straight into the Spaced Out Cosmos of modern day Stoner Rock/Metal with Marty’s outlandish vocals leading the way.

Proto Hag opens with Ambient/Psychedelic noises and vocals before Slomatics come in with a heavy thunderous riff which builds up at a steady slow pace. The song builds from many different levels of Distorted Fuzz, Doom, Stoner Metal which is elevated by the twisted Psychedelic narrative the band have brought to this song.

The final song Monitors is my favourite song on the entire record with Slomatics proving once again why in my humble opinion that they’re the kings of Cosmic Doom/Stoner Metal and rightfully deserve that place at the top of the table. This song is CINEMATIC in every sense of the word with slow-pounding grooves and Marty offering a different vocal perspective perhaps influenced by 70s Prog Rock and Heavy Metal. The Psychedelic guitars from Chris and David are simply breathtaking to hear and are quite different from what I would usually expect from them.
