Review
Firstly,
I most issue my apologies to Sonic Wolves as I promised the band this
review a couple months ago. I got sidetracked with other things and
then I took an extended hiatus during October. So now it’s time to
correct that little mistake with my review of their new album.
Sonic
Wolves is the band that features Kayt Vigil (Pentagram, Primeval
Realm and Syzslak) and Vita from legendary Psychedelic Doomsters –
UFOMAMMUT. So this is a band who know what they’re doing. What may
surprise you is the style of music that the band play. As Sonic
Wolves play a style of Doom Metal, Stoner Rock, Garage Rock, Psych
Rock and Classic Rock.
Their
new self-titled album is a breath of fresh air with the band playing
a wide amount of different songs that only leave you wanting more.
The music is played at a fast pace with Vita’s legendary drumming
being one of the albums main strengths and highlights. However Kayt
steals the show with her soulful vocals and heavy bass riffs.
Standout
songs include Stonefaced General, Ascension, Grim Reaper, Red Temple
and Heavy Light. These songs are where Sonic Wolves impress the most
with hard-hitting melodies and great doom-based lyrics as well. Sonic
Wolves are
perhaps more influenced by the 70s Hard Rock/Metal sound on this
album but the band still manage to include a few modern based grooves
along the way.
The
atmosphere can be quite seedy and downright dirty at times but Sonic
Wolves have a majestic and addictive sound that’s hard not to be
moved by it all. This is an epic sounding album and the production is
so damn good. I’m a huge fan of the band’s previous album, Before
The End Comes. However this album is a much better album as Sonic
Wolves vision is more progressive and has a clearer vision.
Overall,
this album is an excellent album that ticks the right boxes
especially if you’re a fan of the Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Rock
scene. Just be prepared for a few cool surprises along the way.
