Spencer Robinson - Everything

Review

Psych Doom/Stoner Metal solo act Into The Valley Of Death return with their new single Paint The Ground Red and sees Spencer Robinson play a more distorted bass heavy sound compared to their previous releases. The song has a nasty Sludge Rock/Metal sound with a 90’s Grunge attitude with the harsh Psychedelic background becoming more Drone based as time passes by.

There’s an unflinching style of Shoegaze atmospherics especially with the bass guitar leading the instrumental charge which draws upon bands such as TAD, The Melvins and Soundgarden. Into The Valley Of Death offers moments of long drawn out grooves with Spencer’s vocals slowly despairing into bleak cynicism which more than matches the mood of the ugly mood of the title track. There’s a world-weary style of Stoner, Doom and Fuzz that’s played at a down-tuned and slow-paced style which soon picks up momentum towards the closing stages of the track.

The second track Choking is a more a Sludge Punk based track with more kinetic sounding guitars dominating the 1980’s Post-Punk or Noise Rock landscape that Spencer offers here. The song still contains a thrilling Doomed Out sound but with an essence that reminds of Type O Negative performing with that Post-Punk groove rather than their trademark style of Gothic Doom Metal.

Paint The Ground Red is another interesting release from Into The Valley Of Death which shows a different side to previous releases. However, this is still a highly accomplished release from Into The Valley Of Death with impressive production values which bodes well for their next drug-fuelled and nightmarish release.
