Review

Psych Desert/Stoner Rockers Wodorost present their second full length album From The Depths with the band taking a more AQUATIC creative approach with their music. The sound is still irresistibly Psychedelic Stoner/Doom driven with a few leftfield turns added for good measure. Wodorost adds Progressive Post-Rock themes for an unsettled and claustrophobic sound which also offers a more dreamlike approach. The minimal Sludge/Noise Rock moments offer a more nuanced sound which is delivered superbly well throughout the album. However, it's the classic sounding Desert/Stoner Rock score that draws upon influences from acts such as KYUSS, Fu Manchu and Yawning Man which is put to great use on tracks such as Submerged, Depths and Temple. These tracks allow Wodorost to lay down the building blocks of the AQUATIC cinematic world that resides within this album. Ambient rhythms interact with a sludgy attitude with the vocals being more aggressive that I initially expected. The subtle Progressive moments give way to a more atmospheric style of Post-Rock and Psych Rock with little flashes of Post-Metal substance allowing Wodorost to become something wholly different compared to their debut album. Even with the sense that Aquatic or Water is the main inspiration for this album, it's actually used as a metaphor with From The Depths about recovering from depression which gives this album a huge uplifting quality despite the dark gloomy moments that are about within the early stages of the album. The record is about seventy percent purely Instrumental Rock with the remaining thirty percent being more vocal driven. Wodorost do play with more experimental droned out and ambient flavours of Doom/Stoner Rock on the later stages with the record being ever more hopeful on later tracks such as Whirl, Reflections and Dry Out. Though my favourite track on the whole album is perhaps the fourth song Visions which starts with a mellow and downtuned style of Post-Rock driven Post-Stoner melodies which soon ventures into a darker style of Sludge fused Psychedelic sounds with moments of classic sounding Desert Rock freakout extended jams. From The Depths is an absolute delight from start to finish which takes the listener into many unexpected and undiscovered styles of Desert/Stoner Rock that allow this album to be truly original with its intense atmospherics being quite a beautiful listening experience. Excellent raw-sounding production values allows Wodorost to deliver an exquisite album that will see the band gain quite a considerable following within the underground scene. Excellent and Highly Recommended.
