Review
Psych/Prog/Stoner Metallers The Dead At Sea return with their new album Reemergence which has a subtle Post-Rock and Post-Doom score hidden beneath the surface of their Progressive Stoner Rock sound. The album floats between Ambient textures and subtle heavier flows of Stoner waves which you can draw comparison to bands such as Pelican, King Buffalo, ELDER and Weedpecker whilst being fully instrumental.
The Dead At Sea become quite soulful and at peace with themselves with the epic opening track Reemergence which sets the main creative Aquatic theme the band use for the whole journey of the album. This allows The Dead At Sea to draw upon quiet Post-Rock interludes with heavier Post-Metal grooves appearing whilst the whole thing being eerily Psychedelic and uplifting the whole time. The instrumental sounds are varied, different and plentiful with the band playing totally different sounds that their hometown of Birmingham (UK) are infamously known for.
Second song Countdown To Doom is a more despairing Post-Metal track that offers a gloomier composition than the opening track with the slow sludgy grooves representing the dangerous waves of the ocean slowly consuming everything around you. The Dead At Sea have a great way of bringing a sense of danger of calm to their music thanks to the change of tone and direction of their music from Post-Rock to Post-Metal which becomes more ethereal and sudden towards the later stages of the track. This song does have a slight orchestral feel which allows the album to have a more grounded outlook along the way.
Third song The Northwest Passage offers a reflective Post-Stoner sound with traces of Ambient sounds and intricate Post-Rock grooves slowly transforming into a heavier Sludge backdrop with the swirling aquatic elements being created through the sonic instrumental moments that appear abstract for the most part. The Dead At Sea play a free-flowing style of Prog Rock/Metal extended jams within this track which happens more often for the remainder of the album.
The second part of the album sees The Dead At Sea continue their journey into the heavier depths of the Aquatic world they’ve masterfully created for Reemergence with the epic based tracks of The Eastern Promise and Sea Fog III being the most dramatic, trippy, dreamlike and adventurous parts of the record.
Though, the exquisite fourth track Phantom Ship allows the listener to catch their breath with a beautifully played and soulful Psychedelic interlude before the final and heavy crushing section of the album appears.
Reemergence is all about the “JOURNEY” and “DESTINATION” where The Dead At Sea take you upon. With richly observed and superb production values, Reemergence is quite the “POWERHOUSE” album from The Dead At Sea. With a deeply emotional story and sublime instrumental grooves and ambient sounds throughout, this is a first rate album to add to your collection right now.
