Review

Stoner Rockers Sons Of Arrakis are back with their new album Volume II which continues the Heavy Psychedelic passages heard on their acclaimed 2022 debut release though this time round the music has a more Classic Rock and Doom Rock focus. Once again the album is inspired by the legendary science fiction novels of DUNE.

Though, you don’t need to know much about the lore of DUNE to enjoy this album as Sons Of Arrakis have created sounds that drift between the classic and modern based Stoner Rock worlds with the music having quite a warm hearted sound to entice listeners with.

The music is quite HEAVY and DYNAMIC which sees the band drifting further into the Stoner Rock universe inhabited by the likes of ELDER, Howling Giant and King Buffalo especially within the superb opening tracks Scattering, High Handed Enemy and Beyond The Screen Of Illusion which builds the creative template for Sons Of Arrakis showing deft touches of classic sounding Twin Guitar energy appearing. The band show their fondness for classic sounding Twin Guitar attacks reminiscent of Thin Lizzy at times with superb vocals to match.

The one thing that surprised and impressed me the most is how deeply melodic and atmospheric the record can actually be with some intense thought provoking lyrics to add “SPICE” to the whole album especially on Retaliation, Metamorphosis, Blood For Blood and Burn Into Blaze which are my favourite parts of the album. Sons Of Arrakis adds Progressive energy into the later stages of the album which wields impressive levels of technical ability which prove that Sons Of Arrakis are hugely talented musicians in their own right.

Volume II is a record that is bigger, better and bolder than its predecessor with Sons Of Arrakis bringing a fresh perspective to the DUNE legacy that is quite CINEMATIC especially when the worlds of Doom, Psych, Stoner, Prog Rock and Classic Hard Rock collide to bring a first rate musical adventure that’s packed full of highly original grooves throughout.
