Review

Italian Psych/Desert/Stoner Rock explorers Desert Collider release their debut album Generation Ship Endless Drift through Infinity and just like the name of the album itself, their riffs and cosmic themes are MASSIVE which take you on a transcendent journey through areas of Cosmic Rock and Space Rock throughout the epic one hour run time of the album.

Taking a creative stance similar to bands such as ELDER, Monster Magnet, KYUSS, Lowrider, Yawning Man and Weedpecker, the band add a touch of Progressive Rock and Post-Punk energy to their music which does take to evolve and appear within the album. For the most part, Generation Ship Endless Drift through Infinity is a classic style of 1990’s Desert Rock and Stoner Metal melodies with an unforgiving modern day Post-Doom or Post-Stoner based attitude which allows the Spacier elements of their music to fully form and take hold for quite a destructive attitude.

The opening tracks of Orphans of the Sky Part I: Generation Ship, Floating Space Hand and Sonic Carver offer almost twenty minutes of finely tuned Space Exploration with an Ambient style of storytelling with intelligent vocals and sublime sounds. The narrative of the album seesDesert Collider inspired by Science Fiction lore such as DUNE, Star Wars and Star Trek for moments that appear within the lyrics the band have written here but that could be my own fantastical views coming through.

Desert Collider employs a highly adventurous style of Psych Rock that allows the abstract Post-Punk vision of their music to add a sense of grounded realism straight from the legendary Californian Desert/Stoner Rock scene. It’s to Desert Collider’s credit they keep the mood brilliantly fresh and highly invigorating throughout the mammoth runtime. There’s a deep sense of Prog Rock world-building within this album which becomes quite dominant on tracks such as: Orphans Of The Sky Part II: Disembark, ThumpeRRR and Far Centaurus: Drifting without Guidance through Interstellar Space.

There are quieter moments of the album where Desert Collider keep their cards close to their chest on where the heaviest sounds will appear next. This is quite a considerable change of pace but one that is also welcome as it shows a more caring side to the band before returning to their heavier destructive ways. The added use of synths, ambient noises and acoustic instrumental passages highlight a band not afraid to take BIG and BOLD creative risks with their music that hits the target every single time.

Generation Ship Endless Drift through Infinity is an adventurous and brilliantly heavy journey into the far reaches of modern day Psych Stoner Rock/Metal that you’ll find very hard to beat. This is another album of the year contender which has made me rethink my whole favourite albums of the year list even this very late in the game.

This is a must have album and could do wonders allowing Desert Collider to build up a formidable reputation within the Stoner Rock/Metal community.
