High Downer Rock Duo BURNING SISTER Return With New Song/Video For "SWERVE (DEAD STARS)” From Upcoming New Album "Ghosts"

Here's the excellent new song / video for Swerve (Dead Stars) from Doom/Stoner Rockers BURNING SISTER.

The track is from the highly anticipated new album GHOSTS

About Burning Sister:

Now operating as a bass and drum duo for the first time since 2019 when the band was merely a seed of an idea, Denver, Colorado’s Burning Sister are set to unleash their sophomore full-length, ‘Ghosts.’ Since much of the material found on ‘Ghosts’ was initially conceived with a three-piece in mind, the band was tasked with reconceptualizing their approach to songwriting and performance.

Despite the challenges and limitations of a two-piece configuration, Burning Sister looked to other pioneering duos for technical inspiration such as Godhead, Silo, Big Business, and Royal Blood. With a formidable arsenal of bass and guitar amps chosen for their potentiality and tone, an array of effects pedals and ABY boxes, the band was able to embrace and exceed their limitations.

At its heart, the sound of ‘Ghosts’ delves deeper into the narcotizing haze hinted at on ‘Mile High Downer Rock’—the same haze occupied by space rock veterans Bardo Pond or John McBain-era Monster Magnet. The band’s affinity for doom, noise rock, shoegaze and classic rock heavily informs the six tracks that comprise ‘Ghosts’ as does the repetition-as-psychedelia of “trance rock” greats Loop and Spacemen 3. Burning Sister continues to refine and push their brand of psychedelic downer rock into new and varied dimensions.

Shoegaze Duo SOFTSUN (with Yawning Man guitarist) presents new video "Sacred Heart"; "Eternal Sunrise" out November 7th on Heavy Psych Sounds

Californian and Norwegian shoegaze and post-rock duo SOFTSUN share a dreamy new track and video taken from their forthcoming sophomore full-length "Eternal Sunrise" on November 7th, and present the first track "A Hundred And Sixteen" today.

Watch new video "Sacred Heart" via The Sleeping Shaman

SoftSun is the result of a divine collaboration between visionary musicians from opposite sides of the world: Yawning Man guitarist Gary Arce from the Californian Mojave Desert and vocalist and bassist Pia Isaksen from the cold and ever-inspiring grounds of Norway.

Their environments are nearly palpable in their beautifully heavy yet ethereal sound. Arce’s trademark cinematic guitar soundscapes provide a stark contrast to Isaksen's heavy and melodic compositions, as her ethereal vocals elevate the sound to dreamy shoegaze realms. This second offering and Heavy Psych Sounds debut dives deeper into the duo's dusk-to-dawn reveries, resulting in a masterful and moody exploration, at once beautifully experimental and utterly organic, pushed by the gentle percussions of drummer Robert Garson. Experience the magic with their latest single A Hundred And Sixteen!

New album "Eternal Sunrise" - Out November 7th on Heavy Psych Sounds

SoftSun was formed in 2023 by Gary Arce and Pia Isaksen after they had been wanting to make music together for several years. It all started in 2020 when Arce played guitar on the first album of Isaksen's solo project Pia Isa. Discovering how perfectly their musical expressions fit together, they knew they really wanted to create more music together. With Arce's unique and beautiful guitar melodies and sounds, Isaksen's heavy bass and haunting vocals, combined with Dan Joeright's perfectly patient drumming, SoftSun delivers heavy, mellow, and dreamy music with its own sound.

After a few years of collaborating on two of Pia's albums from opposite sides of the planet (Moss in Norway and Yucca Valley in California) and becoming good friends, Gary and Pia finally met in person in late 2023. They instantly became inseparable and started planning their musical project.

Released in the fall of 2024, their debut album “Daylight in the Dark” on Ripple Music is a profound journey into shadowy, expansive soundscapes. Hailed as “a truly majestic work of art” by UK website Outlaws of the Sun, the record masterfully conjures a vibe where dark and atmospheric psychedelia feel like reverberating out over the desert at nightfall — an immersive experience that creates “something that will haunt you long after you step away from these tracks,” as stated by Joshua Tree Voice.

Pia Isaksen - Bass and vocals

Cavernous - Primordial Ooze (EP Review)

Release Date: September 17th 2025. Record Label: NCP Records. Formats: DD

Primordial Ooze - Tracklisting

1.Voyage Through Orbs and Valleys 13:29

2.Dark Apostles 04:55

Review

Primordial Ooze is the latest EP from Psych/Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Cavernous who already released their superb debut album Ancestral Thrones in Feb 2025. The album received a lot of attention from the underground scene and it’s not hard to see why. Cavernous play a down-tuned and aggressively FUZZ METAL style that draws in areas of Psychedelic textures which is AMPED upto the max on this EP.

The EP is two tracks long with the centrepiece being the opening thirteen minutes track Voyage Through Orbs and Valleys. The song is a mixture of long drawn out distorted sludgy guitars and weighty  FUZZ passages that are surrounded by harsh vocals and loads of WEEDIAN REVERB being added for a spicy mix of COSMIC DOOM.

This is the type of music that will appeal to the likes of CONAN, SLEEP, UFOMAMMUT, SLOMATICS and SHRINEBUILDER with how Cavernous explores that heavy DOOMED OUT musical galaxy those great bands continue to conjure up. Though, I do fully appreciate how the band play fast-paced melodies to a more LOW  & SLOW droned out perspective which becomes more violently addictive at the same time.

The final track Dark Apostles may be slightly shorter but that doesn’t stop Cavernous continuing to conjure up WARPED and DISTORTED sludgy guitars but perhaps focused on a leaner, aggressive and direct Space Rock approach compared to the excellent opening track. It’s quite minimalistic with the Electronica beats and haunting Synth Rock/Metal approach. Perhaps more suited to VIDEO GAME SOUNDTRACK territory, this shows how vividly inventive Cavermous can actually become.

Primordial Ooze is an absolute COSMIC TRIP with Cavernous firing on all cylinders which definitely leaves you ultimately fulfilled despite the short runtime of the track.

Excellent Stuff. End Of.

Review

Hooded Menace continue their journey into the depths of Extreme Meal with their trademark style of Death Metal and Doom Metal combining for a punishing round of CLASSIC HEAVY METAL and pulsating melodies within the seventh full length album Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration. There’s something for everyone with Hooded Menace playing strands of Melodic Death, Psych, Prog, and Groove Metal which sees them perhaps deliver their most commercially appealing record to date but still keeping their legendary status of Death Dealers of the highest order intact.

The seven tracks on offer here allows Hooded Menace to play that intense style of NWOBHM guitars that reminds of bands such as IRON MAIDEN and METALLICA in places but with a unique style of Death Metal keeping everything firmly on the right side of darkness. The technical riff-wizardry is beyond spectacular which appears very early on the record after the superb opening instrumental track of Twilight Passages. After that song disappears, Hooded Menace transform into riff-hungry MONSTERS delivering an excellent blend of Progressive and Theatrical passages on tracks such as Pale Masquerade and Portrait Without A Face.

Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration does feel that Hooded Menace are going back to their roots while embracing a more vibrant Post-Doom charge with the flashes of psychedelic surroundings. The vocals are mostly Death Metal based but they’re easy to fully understand with Harri’s own spectacular form and putting in a committed and commanding performance.

The record works at its best when Hooded Menace lean into a softer and laid-back style of music which allows the more highly technical aspects to be more grounded and quite accomplished which the band have become experts at over the last couple of records they’ve released. Up next is the the tracks of Daughters Of Lingering Pain and Luguburious Dance which sees the Death Metal charge take complete control with the hidden levels of Doom & Gloom conjure up warped melodies once more but with quite an emotional kick. The music moves from classic Eighties Heavy Metal right upto modern day Blackened Death & Roll attitude with thrilling orchestral music being played along the way.

The biggest surprise from the record is the band’s surprising choice of cover with Hooded Menace selecting the DURAN DURAN classic track Save A Prayer. This is wholly different to the original as it’s full on Death/Doom Metal makeover that’s complete with fast-paced technical beatdowns and grinded rhythms though it’s the work of  Lasse Pyykkö (Guitar, Bass, Keyboards) and Pekka Koskelo (Drums) that steal the show here. As they transform a new wave/synth-pop classic into a thunderous Doom/Death Metal anthem. Harri’s vocals add their own unique spin compared to that of the legendary Simon Le Bon.

The final track of Into Haunted Oblivion is classic HOODED MENACE through and through which is the most “old-school” track on the whole album with the band playing an almost ten minutes epic that is one of the standout tracks on the album. This is the type of music that the band made their name with and it’s an epic conclusion to an outstanding record with the heaviest and insanely fast-paced grooves on the whole record.

Lingering Pain and Luguburious Dance is another huge sounding and essential record from Hooded Menace which sees them firmly establishing their “LEGENDARY” status within the Death/Doom Metal scene and they still have the power to surprise fans of their music once more.

SuperCollider - Soundwaves (EP Review)

Release Date: September 17th 2025. Record Label: Self Released. Formats: DD

Soundwaves - Tracklisting

1.Flee 07:42

2.Ride the Soundwaves 07:36

3.Clinically Insane 07:21

4.Inhumanity 04:51

Review

Fuzz/Stoner Rockers SuperCollider reside in the same world as the likes of KYUSS, FU MANCHU and TRUCKFIGHTERS with their music moving from areas of classic sounds of the Desert Landscape. Their debut EP Soundwaves is one that relies on heavy distortion and cosmic waves of Space Rock for the most part. This allows the sound to be quite vibrant with layers of aggressive FUZZY melodies developing from the very start of the superb opening track Flee. The vocals allows SuperCollider to have a more melodic and harmonic quality to their music that reminds of KING BUFFALO and HOWLING GIANT in places.

The EP runs for around thirty minutes and could be considered a “mini-album” as Soundwaves has a grand musical vibe throughout with fine amounts of catchy instrumental melodies. This allows SuperCollider to branch out into the heavy arena of “STONER METAL” for some parts but mostly it’s classic Fuzz/Stoner Rock sounds that first originated over thirty five years ago.

The next couple tracks of Ride The Soundwaves and Clinically Insane sees a deeper and progressive sound appearing with multi-layered vocals which offer a slightly warped digitised and electronic feeling. The music drifts into Post-Stoner and Post-Doom surroundings. The sound could be slightly claustrophobic within Ride The Soundwaves but it gives SuperCollider’s sound a heavy apocalyptic energy. SuperCollider moves at a sublime slow-to-mid pace which allows the lyrics to really standout and delicious FUZZY guitars allowing the rhythm section to be quite melodic that perhaps leads into the more interesting melodies developing.

There is an “ice-cold” atmosphere developing once more within the heavily digitised vocals which gives a more deceptive “DOOMED OUT” feeling to the record. You can hear other influences such as Alice In Chains appearing which was another nice touch for classic grunge fans like myself.

The final track of Inhumanity follows a similar path to the previous tracks but within a tighter and shorter runtime with SuperCollider being more low-key with the lyrics and their music in places. This still allows the EP to end on a highly satisfactory conclusion with an over the top approach to the storyline of the EP that takes a step back to SuperCollider’s Desert Rock/Fuzz Rock riff-wizardry which explodes into some epic instrumental solos that’s perhaps some of the best parts of the whole EP.

Soundwaves is a great way to introduce yourselves to the Stoner Rock scene. As it’s bursting with classic sounds of the genre but also allowing themselves every perfect opportunity to inject their own personality into the mix.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Psych/Sludge Metallers November Fire return with 2025 a new two-song EP which was originally written back in 1991 and only recorded very recently. The second track was originally written back in 1992. with both tracks showing the influences of their time. It’s a thrash metal release compared to the band’s usual style of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal that they released with last year’s album Through A Mournful Song.

2025 is meant to be inspired by Sepultura and other Thrash Metal bands of the era but there’s a haunting Psych Metal and Old School Doom-Metal attitude that’s still relevant as it is today. The vocals are abrasive and quite ugly at times but November Fire employs some freakish Psychedelic melodies that still linger and influence the scene upto this very moment.

With 2025 having a cool “throwback” element through it all, the song is vicious with massive amounts of aggressive energy bursting at the seams.

The second track of Somnia is more restricted with the track moving between Occult Rock, Grunge and Psych Rock pastures with a twinge of Americana being developed within the quieter moments. You could even say some parts resemble Drone and Post-Metal places and this is perhaps the most interesting song held on the EP for myself. As November Fire showed “maturity” beyond their years if the track was indeed written back in 1992.

2025 is a cool little EP for November Fire for their fans to experience and if they have any other early demos or unreleased tracks as this superb release then I would be all for it.

Check out when you can.

BEASTWARS: Watch the Official Video for 'LEVITATE' | New Album THE SHIP // THE SEA Out in November

Like bearing witness to a world sliding headlong into the abyss, Beastwars are no strangers to soundtracking times of war, disaster, and collapse – when half-truths and hidden agendas lurk behind every act of the world’s eroding empires.

From the very beginning, their music has embodied the apocalyptic feeling of these end times: primal, hypnotic, and relentlessly heavy. Their 2011 self-titled debut declared as much, and tragically, feels more relevant today than ever. Fourteen years later, the world has only grown harsher and Beastwars’ sixth record, The Ship // The Sea, distils that darkness into one of the most intense and cathartic albums of their career.

In 2021 and 2023, the band toured their first two albums in full. Revisiting that early material reignited the raw energy at their core, inspiring them to strip back the progressive flourishes of recent years and reconnect with the heaviness of their origins. The Ship // The Sea channels that spirit into towering riffs and unflinching emotion, unfolding like a sequence of hellish headlines. Mute the endless stream of calamities on your screen. Beastwars’ heavy howls create an eerily apocalyptic soundtrack for the present day.

“Life has become a marathon for most people,” says Hyde. “How can we not see the injustice, the cruelty of the world? Our new album is like Picasso’s Guernica - a reflection of war and horror, of endings and upheavals. It's the sound of a ship adrift on a cruel sea.”

Water runs as the central motif throughout the record, the ship representing the body and the sea symbolising life. Lyrically, the songs traverse survival, purification, wisdom, and healing, always with an undercurrent of danger and the fight to endure.

To capture this vision, Beastwars decided that they needed to record by the ocean. They decamped to Studio 11b near the beach in Mount Maunganui then completed the album back in their hometown of Wellington, once again working alongside longtime collaborator James Goldsmith.

Having co-produced the band’s last three albums and engineered their live shows, Goldsmith was the ideal partner to harness their ferocity with heightened intensity.

As ever, the music is paired with artwork by Nick Keller (Weta Workshop: Narnia, Avatar, The Hobbit). His vast oil painting for The Ship // The Sea is both terrifying and transcendent, an otherworldly vision that mirrors the sound within.

The Ship // The Sea will be released Friday 7th November 2025 via Destroy Records on LP and digital formats, with pre-orders available now at www.beastwarsband.com. The band will also tour Australia and New Zealand this November in support of the release.

Review

Bear The Torch is the third full length album from Progressive Stoner Metallers The Isosceles Project which is also their first release since 2012. The band received some minor critical acclaim back in the day with their first two albums before going on indefinite hiatus back in 2012. The band play an instrumental style of Prog Metal which branches into areas of Psych, Post-Rock, Doom, Sludge and Post-Metal which adds a twisted level of Jazz and Fusion Rock along the way.

Think Pelican, Mastodon, CAVE-IN, REZN and The Mars Volta have one supergroup extended jamming session and you’re almost there with the music they create on this record alone. Everything does feel out of place at times when you first listen to this with The Isosceles Project projecting a loose and free narrative which manifests into different places on the whole album. Screeching sound effects are added for good measure with that MASTODON influence being heard quite a lot within the first half of the album.

The opening two songs as Terminally Regressed and The Unicorn allows The Isosceles Project to play a stunning and fast-paced blend of freakish and heavy psych based grooves with a backdrop of sludgy beats moving the record to its next exciting chapter. The album really starts cooking and bringing the freshest sounds within the next two tracks of Jagannath and Your Setting Suns fully exploding into a vibrant Space Rock atmosphere with bursts of melodic energy.

This sound can be quite choppy, intense and very direct but all done for the best reasons possible with The Isosceles Project levelling the play field for BIGGER, HEAVIER and THRILLING instrumental passages to punish your AUDIO senses with. I admire how The Isosceles Project always allow themselves to go slightly off script for spellbinding and highly unconventional sounds that dare to be quite different on the final two tracks of Division Helmets and Celestial Hues where a prominent Grunge and Shoegaze identity forms which should appeal to fans of the legendary HUM.

Bear The Torch is not your standard Instrumental Stoner Metal record as The Isosceles Project dare to be different and inject their own creative personality into the mix which allows their music to be more emotionally powerful and superbly grounded than you initially realize.

This is outstanding stuff from beginning to end that’s topped up by excellent production values that will have no trouble finding a dedicated following and cult audience within the underground scene.

Review

South Korean Doom/Sludge Metallers GAWTHROP finally release their debut album Kuboa and it’s an extremely heavy, gloomy, nihilistic and filthy release which should appeal to fans of GRIEF, Corrupted, THOU, PRIMITIVE MAN, EYEHATEGOD and Noothgrush. There’s no uplifting passages to lighten the mood as GAWTHROP invites you kicking and screaming into the violent darkness that Kuboa ultimately holds.

The levels of absolute fine delete to their "FUNERAL DOOM" aspect of their music just adds another level of EXTREME heaviness before the first song of Bulbocapnine completely ends just shows you how brutal this record is going to be.

The record has a menacing down-tuned and stripped back approach with lo-fi sludgy guitars with Sunggun’s violent vocals portraying a world of decaying death metal atmospherics. The music is constantly maneuvering around the violent distorted feedback instrumental mechanics that GAWTHROP fully sells their chaotic and horrifying sound that fully sells their DOOM & GLOOM outlook.

There are only a handful of Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal bands from South Korea with the likes of The Holy Mountain, Varim and Leper Temple that I’ve experienced over the last few years. However, GAWTHROP are the most bleak, violent and brilliantly impressive band I’ve heard from South Korea to date. This album proves that with thrilling grooves, brutal soundclips and violent vocals make this quite a brilliantly punishing record to fully listen to.

The songs that make up Kuboa all contain the same sense of nihilistic and down-tuned approach with flashes of extended Drone Metal and Extreme Metal musical interplay between all the band members. There’s some subtle flashes of Psychedelic energy appearing but this is drowned out by that droned FUZZED METAL destructive appetite that sees GAWHTROP transform into full-on DEATH METAL storytellers on tracks such as Hogweed, Granfalloon, Jumbo and Jimmy.

Kuboa isn’t for the faint hearted as this record shocked me with how brutal the record actually becomes with the down-tuned and low & slow aggression that’s helped via the excellent DIY production values. This allows GAWHTROP to have a fearless attitude where the EXTREME METAL part of their creative persona easily wants you to stay around for more violent punishment long after the thirty six minutes run time has run its course.

GAWTHROP may not be everyone’s cup of tea but if you’re a long dedicated follower of Death Metal and Extreme Metal but laced with Doom/Sludge Metal attitude then this is the place to be. As Kuboa is a highly complex, challenging and unforgiving listen that ranks as one of the best “EXTREME” records this year.

Mathcore/Sludge Metallers OLD DEER Premiere New Song/Video For MAELSTROM From Upcoming New Album.

Following their crushing 2024 debut EP of sludge, noise, and mathcore “Something in the Water”, Colorado quartet Old Deer return with a vengeance, pushing their sound to new extremities with first full-length “Someone in the House”.As the title suggests, there is danger within Old Deer’s latest work. An unpredictability of what new sonic violence lurks around the corner, be it the piercing saxophone hidden with “The Hatch”, or the pit-inducing madness and crush of “Take it All”.

Drawing from a wide swath of heavy sounds, the corners of “Someone in the House” hold notes of sludge, doom, and post-metal, woven into foundations of blistering mathcore, noise rock, and post-hardcore.

Chameleon vocalist Matt Conlee delivers harrowing, ear-shredding screams, weaponizing his vocal cords for visceral impact one moment before laying down deep, melodic cleans the next.

In similarly shape-shifting fashion, the guitars and drums reel between brutal hardcore pummel and dizzying, spidery progressions owing as much to jazz as to math and noise.

Old Deer have concocted a heady, frightening brew of dangerous sonics and ill intent on “Someone in the House”, and dare listeners to take refuge within. The LP drops November 7th, and first single “Maelstrom” will storm the gates on September 19th.

To get you in the mood we have the exclusive premiere of their brutal new track MAELSTROM which you can listen to below thanks to the great folks over at Good Boy PR.
