Review

Psych/Sludge/Stoner Rockers Burning Sister return with this excellent new single Sunspots which sees the band transform their great style of “High Downer Rock” even further into the realm of Alt Rock and Shoegaze. This style of music was used heavily on their acclaimed last album “Ghosts” and Sunspots could have easily fitted anywhere within that record.

There’s a seedy and delicate level of intricate Fuzz, Sludge and Stoner Metal building up behind the scenes with Burning Sister using that Shoegaze element to great effect. There’s a great use of Atmospheric Rock, Drone and Psychedelic surroundings that builds into a more fluid style of Progressive melodies that Burning Sister overlaps with Fuzz and Doomed Out passages.

The added use of Post-Rock and Ambient Rock allows Burning Sister to experiment with different styles of Sonic Distortion with an aggressive Amplified Output being added behind the scenes .The vocals, bass and synths are provided by Steve Miller with Alison Salutz providing the drums that allows Burning Sister to be quite the formidable duo. The second half of the track is perhaps where the real magic happens as the band start playing a more riff-centric style of music that leaves you wanting more.

Burning Sister have added a “LIVE” version of Sunspots which is vastly different to the studio version. As this version is heavier, denser, thicker and way more psychedelic in the heaviest moments. There’s also a stripped back Post-Rock philosophy which allows the song to move into heavier waters. The vocals from Steve are more restrained with the music being the main focus here. Dare I say I prefer this version as it’s rawer, more experimental with a killer Droned Out sound that lasts the whole musical journey.

Sunspots is an excellent song from Burning Sister that once again sees them experiment and transform their music for the better. I’m hoping they’ll release more great songs such as this but I’m still a sucker for the music they created on their amazing 2022 album “Mile High Downer Rock” and this track does offer brief glimpses into that style of music. Though, Burning Sister prove once again why they’re one of the most versatile and creative bands around within the underground scene.

Review

High Downer Rock practitioners Burning Sister with a new found sound with the band being stripped back down to a duo compared to the mighty power trio stance they took for their 2022 acclaimed debut album Mile High Downer Rock. This time on Ghosts sees the band returning back to basics with a heavier, dirtier, fuzzier and primal sound whilst also containing some of the elements that made their debut album such a great listen.

The album has a distinctive Garage Rock energy with elements of Psychedelic mystery lurking in the background. Burning Sister builds up areas of distorted fuzz and SABBATHIAN and BORIS style amplifier feedback. The record has perfectly been captured by Jamie Hillyer at Module Overload on recording and mixing duties with the legendary Tad Doyle helping out on mastering duties. Burning Sister only enhanced their “High Downer Rock” stance to include elements of Grunge, Noise Rock and Shoegaze with a certain HUM influence appearing within the opening tracks of Brokedick Icarus and Stellar Ghost.

The overlapping influence of Noise Rock aesthetics is quite primal with Steve Miller’s vocals being drowned out by an avalanche of dirty Doomed Out sound effects and gloomy synths. Alison Salutz on drums is a destructive force of nature rising against the tide of Steve’s fuzzy Bass sounds and epic synths. The whole record flows with an impressive magnetic presence with each track telling an important piece of the whole story and outline for Ghosts.

Burning Sister only become more obsessed by their gloomy Shoegaze musical direction on the other tracks of the record but still allow themselves the time to develop their classic Psychedelic Stoner Metal stance with areas of distorted Fuzz transforming into muscular slabs of Sludge Rock on the excellent tracks of No Space Or Time, Lethe//Oblivion and Dead Love.

The whole sound becomes quite murky and slightly bleak with Burning Sister capturing the heavier and gloomier side of their High Downer Rock mantle. Burning Sister are highly clinical and superbly calculated when moving into areas of twisted Psychedelic Metal that chews the overall sound into a more experimental stance but still having a rich melodic energy emitting from all corners.

Ghosts is an absolute marvel of a record for folks who like their music down and dirty whilst still having a refreshing modern sonic energy throughout. Burning Sister have done it again by releasing a stunning record that allows them to reinvent themselves for the better. Add this record to your collection at the earliest opportunity and embrace the seedier side of Doom/Stoner Rock that will leave you wanting more destructive heaviness every time you listen to the album.

High Downer Rock Duo BURNING SISTER Return With New Song/Video For "SWERVE (DEAD STARS)” From Upcoming New Album "Ghosts"

Here's the excellent new song / video for Swerve (Dead Stars) from Doom/Stoner Rockers BURNING SISTER.

The track is from the highly anticipated new album GHOSTS

About Burning Sister:

Now operating as a bass and drum duo for the first time since 2019 when the band was merely a seed of an idea, Denver, Colorado’s Burning Sister are set to unleash their sophomore full-length, ‘Ghosts.’ Since much of the material found on ‘Ghosts’ was initially conceived with a three-piece in mind, the band was tasked with reconceptualizing their approach to songwriting and performance.

Despite the challenges and limitations of a two-piece configuration, Burning Sister looked to other pioneering duos for technical inspiration such as Godhead, Silo, Big Business, and Royal Blood. With a formidable arsenal of bass and guitar amps chosen for their potentiality and tone, an array of effects pedals and ABY boxes, the band was able to embrace and exceed their limitations.

At its heart, the sound of ‘Ghosts’ delves deeper into the narcotizing haze hinted at on ‘Mile High Downer Rock’—the same haze occupied by space rock veterans Bardo Pond or John McBain-era Monster Magnet. The band’s affinity for doom, noise rock, shoegaze and classic rock heavily informs the six tracks that comprise ‘Ghosts’ as does the repetition-as-psychedelia of “trance rock” greats Loop and Spacemen 3. Burning Sister continues to refine and push their brand of psychedelic downer rock into new and varied dimensions.

Review

Burning Sister return with their latest venture into “HIGH DOWNER ROCK” territory with the new single Dead Love which features another aggressive style of smoked up FUZZY atmospherics spliced with trippy Doom/Stoner Metal melodies. This time round the band conjure up a Proto-Metal style of music with elements of Garage Rock which is quite different to their last song of Lethe//Oblivion.

The stripped back energy has a more dynamic presence with Burning Sister just being a bass and drums type of band for this current moment in time. This may change in the future if they decide to add another guitarist into the mix. For now, Dead Love allows Burning Sister to operate with seedy Psychedelics with a sound that has a slight Monster Magnet (TAB era) influence with layers of frenzied sludgy sounds.

Steve Miller’s appear sporadically throughout the song and even then their brief and straight to the point. Alison Salutz excels on drums by putting in a measured and commanding performance. Steve’s bass playing has a subtle Space Rock energy when compared to his sublime Synths that dominate the Space Rock landscape.

Once again, Burning Sister moves away from the sound they created on their acclaimed 2022 album “Mile High Downer Rock”. Dead Love has a more gloomier environment with catchy, aggressive and subversive melodies being quite progressive that sees Burning Sister drifting ever closer to the promised land of HIGH DOWNER ROCK and creating something original and special indeed.

This is another outstanding slice of Doom/Stoner Metal from one of the coolest bands currently within the underground scene and why their upcoming new album due for release later this year is perhaps my most anticipated album of the year.

Burning Sister have kindly allowed me to premiere the song in full which you can watch below.

Review

High Downer Rock Duo Burning Sister are back with their blazing new single Lethe//Oblivion which sees the band dive right into a heavy smoky atmosphere of down-tuned jams and weedian pleasures with a subtle FUZZ ROCK backdrop of hazy psychedelics. There's an extra level of distorted seediness which has a classic Grunge / Shoegaze vibe developing behind the scenes.

With a nightmarish vision starting to form, Steve Miller is in fine demented form on vocals, bass and synth duties. His vocals are quite different to previous Burning Sister releases. This does feel that Steve is coming down from a bad ACID TRIP and being revived in the real world. Though, my favourite part is the excellent drumming from Alison Salutz. In my mind, Alison delivers and conjures up the heavy rhythms that really makes the song actually come to life.

Steve’s bass is LOUD and VIVID but Alison’s drumming is absolutely essential to the whole track and this is perhaps my favourite track that Burning Sister have made yet. It’s quite seedy, surreal and psychotic but also beautifully heavy in a twisted and disjointed kind of way. This is what HIGH DOWNER ROCK is meant to be and if this is the first sign of what to expect from Burning Sister’s upcoming new album GHOSTS then we maybe experiencing a brief glimpse into something extra special from the band.

Lethe//Oblivion is simply magnificent. Plain and simple.

High Downer Rock Duo BURNING SISTER Return With New Song "Lethe//Oblivion” From Upcoming New Album "Ghosts"

Noise rock influenced psychedelic garage rock meets doom with an old school feel, modern innovation and plenty of swagger.

The band leans more heavily this time into the doom and psychedelic elements of their sound, giving us some of their heaviest music to date.

This is just a little taste to hold us all over until the band release their upcoming album, 'Ghosts'.

"Lethe//Oblivion” has been percolating since our last recordings and was almost lost to the abyss when we decided to continue on as a two-piece. As we were preparing the songs that would eventually become our upcoming album, ‘Ghosts,’ we decided to jam it a bit so it wouldn’t become forgotten to time. With the right fuzz and gain settings and a few tweaks to the composition we were not only stoked that we could pull it off in the studio, but that we’d also be able to make it work in a live setting.

“Lethe//Oblivion” leans heavily into the doom and psych aspects of the band resulting in one of our heaviest tunes. It’s the sound of letting go, exploring the regions beyond space and time, but not caring and finding comfort in the fact that you just might not make it home…

Review

Downer Rock Power Trio Burning Sister return with their new EP Get Your Head Right and this has a more freakish Garage Rock sound compared to their acclaimed 2022 debut album Mile High Downer Rock. The EP still conveys their deliciously heavy and fuzzed up sound from that album with Burning Sister on a more Post-Punk offensive with subtle shades of Heavy Psych Stoner Rock which the band are becoming increasingly better at.

With a more subtle style of delivering Fuzzed Up Grooves appearing on the opening track Fadeout with Steve’s brilliantly deceptive vocals buried under some thick heavy WEEDIAN and Psychedelic grooves that build up to moments of Stoner based FREAKOUT levels of Amplifier Distortion.

Second track Barbiturate Lizard is a more cautious Doomed Out affair with slow-paced Guitar Reverb and Fuzzy Feedback with a trippy surreal sound once again showing a different style from Burning Sister. The mood is quite sludge-fuelled that builds into a more steady confident rhythm with a gloomy Blues Rock score. The track builds up to more heavier areas of Doom/Stoner Rock with an Occult Rock vibe that throws the band into a more seedier and seductive sound especially with the instrumental sounds and extended jams appearing on this song alone.

Third song Get Your Head Right is more a straight up Stoner Rock sound that feels influenced by NEBULA at the early stages of the track. Burning Sister put their warped psychedelic creative talents into overdrive on this track with heavy amounts of FUZZY aggression and wicked Classic Hard Rock moments appearing when the time calls for it. Steve’s vocals have that playful, rebellious and gloomy quality to them with Nathan and Alison laying impressing even further on guitars and drums respectively. There’s some sonic interplay on this track with a constant Drone presence which gives Burning Sister a more demonic quality to the EP.

Fourth song Looking Through Me is where Burning Sister fully bring their “Downer Rock” persona to the party with a track that could have easily been lifted from their debut album with a more Garage Rock persona being injected into the mix. The song is easily the standout track of the EP with the most interesting sounds and twisted jams laid down for this track. Burning Sister play a deliberate slow-to-mid pace for this track but this allows the band time to play a more progressive style of music where they add different sonic effects and fuzzy effects for a bewitching and warped style of Doom/Stoner Metal.

The final track is a cover of Mudhoney classic When Tomorrow Hits. I will admit I’m not the biggest Mudhoney fan and this track in general. However, I have to say Burning Sister deliver a track that stays true to the original’s creative vision whilst allowing the band to do their own thing as well. A classic track is given the “Downer Rock” makeover with inspired results.

Get Your Head Right is another wickedly entertaining EP that offers almost thirty minutes of first rate entertainment. Whilst it may not reach the dazzling and electrifying heights of their acclaimed debut album, Burning Sister have still delivered another first rate release to make themselves more known within the underground scene.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Mile High Downer Rock is the debut album from Psych/Acid/Doom/Stoner Rock Power Trio Burning Sister and it's an album that's been entertaining the hell out of me for the past month or so. I've featured the band on the blog a few times and I was excited to hear the album. Now that it's finally here, Burning Sister have delivered a terrific blend of FUZZED based Psych/Stoner Rock with a gloomy Acid Rock sound that gives them quite a seedy realistic feel within the WEEDIAN underground scene.

Opening song Leather Mistress is quite a warped and gloomy ride into Burning Sister's world. Delicious Doom/Fuzz grooves that give way to a more Acid drenched style of Psych Stoner Rock with epic amounts of WAH-WAH Feedback and Distorted elements for a more exciting down-tempo sound. The vocals are buried under layers of vocal effects and FUZZY DISTORTED tones which are quite melodic and Burning Sister showing a keen eye for a riff-centric approach for the song and album.

Second song Acid Night Vision is a more freakier and fast-paced offering where the vocals come into play but still keeping with the opening song's style of gloomy FUZZED OUT approach. Burning Sister perhaps bring a classic 90's Noise Rock delivery to the album with this track. The song moves at an exciting fast pace with the band allowing the Distorted themes being the primary weapon to deliver their blend of modern day Psych Stoner Rock and Doom Rock that is washed down with that sublime style of Acid Rock. Parts Black Sabbath, SLEEP and Dinosaur Jr can be heard as direct influences but perhaps also from the classic era of Grunge. Which isn't too surprising since you have Grunge Legend Tad Doyle mastering the album.

Third song The Messenger is an instrumental Psych/Stoner/Acid Rock offering with flashes of Ambient Rock that is quite a cool listen despite the short two minute running time. The song briliantly leads into the next song of Cloven Tongues.

Fourth song Cloven Tongues resembles OM and Shrinebuilder in many ways and I wonder if this song is meant as a tribute to Al Cisneros especially with the sublime vocals and low-heavy bass that appears on the track. The song is still Burning Sister through and through with the distorted and AMPLIFIER WORSHIP based being the best part of the track. One of the heaviest tracks on the album with Burning Sister adapting a more Prog Rock feel to the album especially when the Spaced Out vibes appear. The album is built on PURE DISTORTION and things do become brilliantly seedy and heavy in all the right places.

Fifth song Dead Sun Blues opts for a more Blues/Desert Rock approach that harks back to the early days of KYUSS and FU MANCHU. Steve's vocals are more clearer here and perhaps have a more straightforward delivery despite the regular presence of their down-tuned style of Acid Rock/Noise Rock being perhaps even being toned down a bit. The song is superbly heavy and freaky in all the right places. The thrilling guitar solos that appear on the later stages of the track make this one of the outstanding and catchiest tracks on the album.

Sixth Song Serpahim is another instrumental oddity lasting for ninety seconds or so. A gloomy occult sound is the main order of business here but there's some fantastical long DRONED out riffs I wanted to hear more of and I got my wish with the final two tracks on the album.

The final songs S.I.B. and Stars Align are where Burning Sister go all out with their Droned Out/Acid Drenched style of Doom/Stoner Metal. Songs that actually screams out MODERN DAY WEEDIAN ATTITUDE. The vocals are bang on form yet again with the band excelling even further within the riffs department. A more flashier and progressive sound sees Burning Sister play Progressive Stoner Metal notes with a gloomy vision. Both songs contain different styles of music within its Seven Minutes plus running time but feels longer and in a good way. The Ambient/Psychedelic tones all build upto a loud and exciting finish that will leave you wanting to hear more even when non-stop extended guitar solos appear within Stars Align.

Mile High Downer Rock is an exciting collection of individual tracks that are all superbly played and written from the start. Burning Sister have delivered a brilliantly and freaky slice of modern day Doom/Stoner Metal that easily ranks as one of the best debut albums to be released this year.

Burning Sister Premiere New Song LEATHER MISTRESS

The Band

Steve - Bass/Vox/Synth
Drake - Guitars
Alison – Drums

The Lowdown

Downer Stoner Rockers Burning Sister release their new single Leather Mistress which you can hear below:

The band say this about the new song:

"Leather Mistress” was born from a random bass riff at one of our first practices dating back about four years or so at this point. Though it has been floating around in demo form and has been a live staple, this recorded version is embellished with background synth and slide guitar. As for the Leather Mistress herself?

Sure, she can be taken literally, but she also marks the idea behind the unknown, destruction without a clear sense of cause-and-effect, and rebirth…

Burning Sister Premier New Song And Video For ACID NIGHT VISION

Denver, Colorado Doom/Stoner Rockers Burning Sister made a mighty impression on me with their 2020 debut self titled EP.

The band are currently working on their debut album due for release in 2022. We are premiering their new song Acid Night Vision from the upcoming new album.

The song is a groovy, fuzzy 7:20 offering of stoner rock/doom and is the first single from the band's upcoming debut album Mile High Downer Rock. The video is equally as trippy and mind altering as the music.

Track video/stream:

Band Statement:

"Denver three-piece Burning Sister have had a busy year playing shows and recording the follow-up to 2020’s 'Burning Sister EP.' The band’s first full-length, 'Mile High Downer Rock,' will arrive sometime in 2022. “Acid Night Vision,” the album’s first single, is the culmination of three-plus years of jamming together and showcases the band’s love of groove, fuzzed-out heavy riffs, and their fondness for psychedelia."

Review

Burning Sister are a self-proclaimed “MILE HIGH DOWNER ROCK” band from Denver, Colorado. An area which has provided ourselves with many cool bands of late. This band focus primarily on 70s based Doom/Stoner Rock with elements of Psychedelic Rock and Acid Rock allowing the band to switch between classic Hard Rock and Heavy Metal vibes within their superb debut EP.

The self-titled EP has quite a rebellious feel to it all with the Power Trio perhaps influenced by the shadows of Black Sabbath and Fu Manchu but with a slightly darker Stoner methodology within the Doomier aspects of the EP. The 5 songs on offer here build up from an almost murky backdrop to an almost Spacier style of attitude which you can hear from the excellent opening song – Path Destroyer.

Path Destroyer opens the EP superbly well with the loud aggressive riffs coming to an absolute stop towards the end and Burning Sister play a more sombre style Post-Doom/Stoner Metal before switching back to a gloomier outlook. Steve’s vocals feel rooted in 70s Doom Rock/Metal with the music being played for a tougher modern aesthetic. Overall, it’s a good mix and it’s helped along by the excellent production values whilst remaining quite vintage in parts.

Second song – Lord Of Nothing – is a rough and ready offering with the band playing a song perhaps reminding myself of Saint Vitus and The Obsessed with the PUNK ROCK aspects coming on very strong with the Doom/Stoner Metal riffs being slightly more restrained. The vocals are quite bold and should maybe have done with more volume in the mix. Another superb song for Burning Sister to impress the listener with.

The next 3 songs on the EP is the strongest parts of the entire record with Burning Sister being more adventurous with the music, lyrics and kick-ass vocals from Steve yet again. Drake on Guitars and Alison on drums impress the most on Malestrom and Burning Sister having a more grizzled and threatening sound. The EP sees Burning Sister flirt with the different styles of Doom/Stoner Rock and offer a more entertaining style of music that you initially expect.

The EP is quite dark, gloomy and very bleak which is what you should expect from a band creating “MILE HIGH DOWNER ROCK”.

You do get your monies worth with this record as the band offer 28 minutes of sublime Doom/Stoner Metal to get fully involved with. Burning Sister feel like they’re holding back on this release and we won’t see the “REAL” Burning Sister until a few more releases or perhaps even on a full length album.

This is a superb release to own and shows that Burning Sister have huge potential. Keep an eye on this band….
