Review

Esox Lucifer is the fourth full length album from Doom/Stoner Metallers 10,000 Years where the band have partially swapped the Cosmic surroundings of Space for a grounded and cerebral approach for this record. The heavy Spaced Out themes are still there but 10,000 Years have opted for an intense melodic style of Sludge/Stoner Metal more accustomed to the likes of The Sword, KYLESA, BEASTWARS and Torche. They still pack the almighty aggression of their musical heroes HIGH ON FIRE but it’s good to see 10,000 Years adapt their musical style to a more modern sound which you can hear through the likes of Beasts Of The Northern Wild, Pursuit Special and Fleur de Sledgehammer.

The sludgy surroundings opens the music to violent blasts of Thrash Metal along the way with a highly energetic style of Post-Doom, Ambient Rock and Post-Rock which perhaps makes this the band’s most mature record to date especially musically speaking. The vocals and lyrics have a more reflective energy to them when compared to their previous records. Esox Lucifer throws a few curveballs along the way with 10,000 Years moving into Shoegaze territory which allows lead vocalist Alex Risberg to deliver some startling and emotionally charged vocals along the way.

This record still features the same intense and action packed sounds the band made their names with but this record allows 10,000 Years to constantly evolve onto greater musical heights especially when the Psychedelic and Cosmic passages appear that holds everything together. The soulful Ambient themes become more gloomier on tracks such as Church Of The Red Museum, Alien Tactics and Esox Lucifer. There seems to be an unwavering intent of Progressive Metal energy that becomes more part of the action of the later stages of the record. 

The production values are superbly realized with a sound that’s both crisp and quietly distorted which allows the band to explore different musical sounds they haven’t experienced before. This is still a band who revel in creating Sludge/Stoner Metal mayhem but why not add some standout Psychedelic and Post-Stoner grooves along the way which 10,000 Years pull off with great style and full commitment from start to finish. 

Esox Lucifer is perhaps the next musical and creative evolution from 10,000 Years which should hopefully catapult them onto bigger and greater things from the confinements of the heavy underground scene. They have the songs, talent and creative vision to move onto the next level of their musical careers and this record is a testament to that fact. This is an outstanding record on every singular level. 

10,000 Years have delivered another album of the year contender in their already impressive discography. If this is your first time to their highly destructive world then be prepared for a true masterclass of modern day Sludge/Stoner Metal.

It was produced by the band themselves with Erik Palm engineering, recorded in four months at their own Pine Hill Studios (drums cut at Studio Fluff in Västerås by Andreas Morén), mixed by Robert Lamu of Skraeckoedlan, and mastered by Magnus "Devo" Andersson at Endarker Studio.

Review

10,000 Years have made their glorious return, but it is not without changes. For starters the band recently signed to the beloved and legendary Ripple Music, that’s big news within the scene as well as for the band and label. Next up, having completed their Albatross trilogy, the band leave behind the conceptual ideas of the previous three albums instead moving forward on ‘All Quiet On The Final Frontier’ to focus on single tracks and fresh themes. 10,000 Years also has a new drummer, Alvin Risberg. Yes, he’s the brother of vocalist/bass guitarist Alex Risberg. Erik Palm who has been in the band since its inception returns on guitar, rounding out the lineup. The band are familiar with each other not only through family ties and 10,000 Years but the trio also released two EPs and an album under the name ‘Pike’ between 2008-2012, so they’re no strangers to one another. 

After the short intro we’re cast into the title track ‘All Quiet On The Final Frontier’ which is a stoner rock track and different from what 10,000 Years are really known for. Even though they don’t stray too far from their established path it’s a welcomed entry of fuzziness and a sign of things to come. It’s a headbanger for sure, with an upbeat driven tempo with the drums being in the driver’s seat. ‘The Experiment’ continues the direction of stoner jams with the rhythm section just knocking it out of the park in a frenzied attack. I’ve always been a fan of Alex’s vocals, they are always a highlight for me, in addition to being a signature of 10,000 Years sound. They are powerfully belted out above the madness and are pretty much a fourth instrument within the band guiding the narrative. 

‘Death Valley Ritual’ is a bass heavy track, being very prominent within the verses as they build up towards the full blazing blast of the choruses. When the vocals wail “I’ll live forever!” I can’t help but think fuckin’ Slayer! There’s a kickass drum solo followed by a sonically elevated lead guitar part before the song comes crashing back down to a charred earth. ‘The Weight Of A Feather’ really hits hard on the second half of the song, there’s a back and forth between a Mastodon sounding guitar melody and a stoner metal riff, with the latter being one of the heaviest on the album. It seems the weight of a feather can be quite massive under the right circumstances. An excerpt from the 1961 sci-fi film ‘The Phantom Planet’ plays towards the end as the double bass and heavy riff finish the track. 

Most of the songs on ‘All Quiet On The Final Frontier’ float around the four minute mark, though those four minutes sure seem to go by fast. ‘Ablaze In The Now’ is the exception as it is just over six minutes, however it’s somewhat split in half as the first half of the track is contrastingly different than the second. While the first part is heavy, the second half that grabbed me is melodic and even adds a synthesizer to the mix, making for an interesting and spacey feel to the ending. 

‘High Noon In Sword City’ is the first single that dates back to August when it was first released. To me it has a progressiveness to it, like a heavier Howling Giant with captivating guitar parts that latch onto your ear holes and meld with your consciousness. The chorus is commanding and has a heavy back end, while the lead guitar section is probably the best on the album. Down The Heavy Path’ seems as though it could have easily been on album ‘II’ or ‘III’ containing both stoner doom and stoner metal influences. The percussion is intriguing and engaging with the hi-hat and what sounds like a drum block. The Baroness like chorus leads to a midpoint time change and a serious head nodding riff, as a tolling bell fades out the album.

Though built upon the bedrock of the previous three albums, leaving behind the restraints of past concepts have opened the door for the band to expand their sound and style, as this is a great album with a more balanced approach and may be even more accessible to new fans. This plus the addition to Ripple Music’s roster can only mean more great things to come with a wider audience to the already global band. ‘All Quiet On The Final Frontier’ is a new frontier, a little lighter, a little brighter, but still full of 10,000 Years might.

Recording, as usual, took place at the legendary Studio Sunlight with the equally legendary Tomas Skogsberg manning the controls. Mastering was handled by Magnus ’Devo’ Andersson at Endarker Studios.

Swedish Psych Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers 10,000 Years made a great impression with the Stoner Metal community with their debut EP released back in Summer 2020. It’s hard grooves matched with almost fantastical lyrics appealed to fans of bands such as High On Fire, Sleep, CONAN, Mastodon and Monolord but with their own impressive style of music shining through.

Fast forward a year later and the band are back with their debut full length album - II. The album is what you would call a concept album. I won’t spoil what the story is but you can check on the album’s BandCamp Page or check out my recent interview with the band here.

10,000 Years open the album up with Descent. A 25 second onslaught of Thrash/Doom grooves that offers a thrilling narrative to open the album with. I wasn’t expecting a heavy and brutal style song especially with the short running time. Imagine early era High On Fire but played at a much faster pace.

Second song - Gargantuan Forest - opens with a more subdued style of music with the antagonists of the story getting used to their wild and varied surroundings. The song is a mixture of Psychedelic vibes with elements of Doom, Sludge, Stoner and Post-Metal appearing but with that “Swedish” trademark style of “Heavy Psychedelic Doom” being the main glue that holds everything together. If you’ve listened to recent albums by Monolord and DOMKRAFT then 10,000 Years offers a similar style but with more “Sci-Fi” influenced lyrics and ideas driving the song home. The vocals are superb with them being quite aggressive from start to finish.

Third song - Spinosaurus - allows 10,000 Years to expand into more Punk based territory with a more vibrant fast-paced style of music that veers almost into the realm of Thrash Metal. The song runs under 4 minutes but remains one of the standout tracks on the album. The lyrics have a bleak sense to them with the music constantly changing from one style of Heavy Rock to the next. 

Fourth song - The Mooseriders - is where the band move into Psychedelic Rock/Metal overdrive with a major High On Fire influence leading the way. The song is very multi-layered with its musical structure and the lyrics have been written for this song. 

There are 4 songs left on the record and 10,000 Years excel even further on the 2nd half of the album with more bombastic and highly original ideas of their own. As they bring more thrilling ideas to the overall story of the album. 

Other great songs on the record include: Angel Eyes, March Of The Ancient Queen and the gloriously epic final song Dark Side Of The Earth.

Each song represents an exciting chapter of the story that 10,000 Years have created for this release, The band are quite daring on this release especially on the later stages of the record where they have to wrap things up and end the story on a satisfactory conclusion.

What’s even more impressive is that this album was recorded over a 3 day period. The album sounds wonderful and is superbly produced. So top marks to everyone who helped make this album. 

II is a brilliantly entertaining album and for myself personally, will rank as one of the best debut records of 2021.
