Review

New Wave Of Cosmic Heavy Metal is the fourth album from Psych/Space/Stoner Rockers Dune Sea and continues their musical obsession with heavier, thicker and aggressive Doomed Out melodies. Taking cues from Weedpecker, ELDER and King Buffalo along the way, the album title is perhaps a false flag if folks are expecting a HEAVY METAL assault on the senses. The record is superbly heavy but it’s not HEAVY METAL but perhaps more Alt Rock and Cosmic Rock based with the band experimenting with different soundscapes, landscapes, psychedelic shifts and musical instruments throughout the album.

Dune Sea play at a brilliantly addictive fast pace which doesn’t give up for a second especially within the early stages of the album on tracks such as Fremen, Omuamua and Molduga which sees KYUSS sonic landscapes developing within a muscular FUZZ ROCK attitude with a certain Prog Rock flavour. The vocals are quite varied and highly interesting that Dune Sea operate with a classic Nineties Alt-Rock attitude to tell the narrative of the whole album.

This is perhaps Dune Sea’s heaviest and most diverse record to date though I still prefer their previous two records for the sheer entertainment factor of it all. However, Dune Sea create the biggest and wildest ideas of their career to date on this record especially on the longer tracks on the album such as: Molduga, H.T.B ( Voyager I Slight Return) and Astromental where they let the true progressive and outlandish themes of the album to really take centre stage.

The record does feel like a SPACE ROCK / STONER ROCK opera come to life at times with its small touches to science fiction and fantasy storytelling running throughout the record. Another major strength of the record is how the tracks feel quite different to each other which allows Dune Sea to play themes from Post-Rock and Classic Rock that adds a fresh musical perspective at the same time.

New Wave Of Cosmic Heavy Metal is a big, bold and brash musical adventure which serves Dune Sea superbly well. This is a record that will no doubt appeal to a huge section of the Psych/Stoner Rock fan-base with its hugely exciting sounds and cool cinematic vision.

Review

Orbital Distortion is the new album from Norwegian Psych/Stoner Rockers Dune Sea and carries on the crazy and wildly inventive Space Rock themes from their last album Moons Of Uranus. The album sees Dune Sea explore a more cinematic and progressive style of Psych Stoner Rock that also has a more direct style of music that sees the band flattering on the creative edges of Post-Rock. 

Opening song Astro Chimp is a freaky and classic Space Rock song with Dune Sea bringing an upbeat style of Desert Rock and Stoner Rock with a twinge of Blues Psychedelics that can be quite FUNKY in places. Solid Hard Rock vocals are added for a song that sees Dune Sea playing some heavy guitar solos that have a slight "Yawning Man" feel to them. Well written and trippy lyrics make this a great song to open the album with.

Second song Hubro offers more lush psychedelic guitars and warped Post-Stoner grooves with a distorted Space Rock drive. A nice mix of classic hard rock swagger and freaky melodic sounds are the main order of play here with Dune Sea being slightly experimental here. The song is upbeat and perhaps even Prog Rock when the band starts adding different musical instruments into the mix. Dune Sea adds strands of Ambient Noises that feel all too human in places. The song does have its fair share of extended guitar solos and this works surprisingly well with the different experimental sounds and themes going on within the song.

Third song Euphorialis is a classic sounding Blues Rock inspired Space Rock number with an Alt Rock theme being the most prominent you'll hear on the track. Dune Sea navigate themselves round 60's and 70's Psych Rock with an almost Garage Rock drive that allows the band to create something different compared to the other tracks on the album. 

Dune Sea explores their wild and creative side even further on tracks such as Draugen, Garagantua, Anesthesia and Hevn. The riffs and creative ideas become even WILDER than before especially on Gargantua and Hevn which are perhaps the best tracks on the album. The album does offer a wide mix of different styles of Psychedelic Stoner Rock with different levels of heaviness throughout the album. 

The band do feel inspired by Monster Magnet at times with the Psychedelic and Space Rock journey taken with this album. Dune Sea have delivered an album packed full of interesting vocal styles and great lyrical content to match the weirdness of the whole album. 

Orbital Distortion is a real trip into the "weirder" side of Psychedelic Stoner Rock and offers first rate entertainment for all dedicated followers of the band and the underground scene as well.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Dune Sea Premiere New Song For GARGANTUA From Upcoming New Album Orbital Distortion

Nearly two years following the release of their critically acclaimed second album "Moons of Uranus", Norwegian psych/stoner rockers Dune Sea now return with their third effort titled "Orbital Distortion".

Set for release on November 11th via All Good Clean Records, "Orbital Distortion" sees the Norwegian trio delving further into space rock, taking off for a grand musical journey into outer space.

Since their self-titled debut album in 2019, Dune Sea have establish themselves as a solid part of the Norwegian psych-scene. Their psych-space rock universe has expanded for every release and on this effort it seems like they have left the Earth for good to cruise throughout the cosmos.

Review

Dune Sea debut album bridges the gap between Space Rock and Stoner Rock/Metal with relevant ease and shows the band creating their own highly stylistic sound that draws influence from Hawkwind, Earthless, Colour Haze and KYUSS. The album is quite a trippy and surreal audio experience with the band adding a cool seventies rock groove to their music as well.

The trippy audio soundwaves and hard-rocking Desert/Stoner Rock riffs is a concept we’ve heard a thousand times before. However, Dune Sea actually do weird and wonderful things with the standard rules of the Stoner/Space Rock genres that make you stand up and take notice.

Opening song – Pentobarbital And Ethanol – is a combination of Hawkwind sonic riffage and Fu Manchu/Kyuss classic Desert/Stoner Rock vibes with the song moving into heavier Doomed Out Territory. The song can be quite Post-Rock sounding at times but this gives Dune Sea a more cinematic sound. The music is fast-paced and never feels out of place. The harsh Bass Guitar towards the end of the song shows you that Dune Sea is not afraid to get down and dirty to create heavier sounds.

Second song – Dune Sea – has a nineties Stoner Rock flow to it with the band once again allowing the Space Rock vibe to become the main driving force behind their music. The vocals from Ole are sung superbly well with echoes of “FREEDOM” being sung in the background. This song sees Dune Sea play some fantastic heavy Psychedelic Stoner Metal guitar solos that have a vibrant energy to them.

Third song – Future – carries on the Psychedelic Stoner Rock madness from the opening two songs but with swirling Ambient noises and self-aware lyrics making this one of the standout songs on the album. The band show their appreciation for Science Fiction and Star Wars in general with some of the lyrics they have written for this song.

Fourth Song – Morphine – sees Dune Sea adding a seedy Garage Rock vibe to their music. However, the warped psychedelic riffs and distorted vocals don’t fully work and the band lose focus deciding which musical direction they want to fully explore on this song.

Fifth song – Green – sees the band return to winning ways with a heavy mix of Psychedelic Stoner Rock and warped Spaced Out sounds being played to their full potential. Heavy and intense in places making Green a trippy and very surreal psychedelic experience.

The remaining four songs sees Dune Sea continue playing their epic hybrid Spaced Out with different Ambient Noises just for the sheer heck of it. Songs such as: Astrodelic Breakdown, Bounty Hunter and Cosmic Playground – offer a cool narrative to each of the songs with the band telling an exciting story within each song through the power of their music.

Dune Sea is an excellent sounding record and the production is epic from the start. If you’re looking for a band to satisfy your Space Rock and Stoner Rock/Metal desires, then Dune Sea have you covered.
