Mars Era - ONIRO (Album Review and Album Premiere)

Release Date: 19th February 2021. Record Label: Argonauta Records. Format: CD/DD

ONIRO - Tracklisting

OBE
Into The Pyramid
Brighter Than The Sun
The Chicken s Wardrobe
Cyclone
The Last Breath to Wake Up

Review

ONIRO is the new album from Italian Space/Stoner Rockers Mars Era. This is their first album in 4 years when they released their acclaimed debut album. ONIRO is a different beast to DHARMANAUT. As the band plays a more Progressive and Expansive style of Prog Rock being the dominant force here. The band employ certain Psych Rock and Stoner Rock elements but this has seen the band evolve into a more Progressive force.

The album is still a worthwhile and exciting trip into the realms of Psychedelic Spaced Out Rock. Just be prepared for something different and perhaps outlandish in cases. The album is wildly influenced by bands such as TOOL and DEFTONES but still having a cool Stoner Rock edge. The 6 songs here are excellent and deserve multiple listens to fully understand it all.

Standout songs include - OBE, Into The Pyramid, Brighter Than The Sun and Cyclone.

Mars Era excel on this album and have released another stunning record to impress the Stoner Rock/Metal community with.

Portuguese experimental rock band Vircator are set to return with their third, full length album on October 4th via Raging Planet. Titled Arcano, on their upcoming record the four-piece collective takes a new step on experimenting dimensional dramatic instrumentals, searching for new sounds, emotions and textures, and exploring the polarity of quiet and loud, complexity and simplicity, ugliness and beauty to the same time.

Vircator's sound is a powerful and emotional ride that takes you deep into the human conscience, balanced by calm and sweeping moments. But Arcano is even more than just an emotional introspect searching: It's inspired by the cult of the plants and spiritual cure of the human conscience according to the ancestry.

Co-produced by renowned Pedro Correia at Studio B, Vircator were able to capture this broad tonal palette and wide array of emotional motifs into a powerful journey through the tumultuous corners of human existence.

Review

Green Oracle debut album is a majestic sounding release that bridges the gap between Stoner Metal, Doom Metal, Psych and Drone. The album is a heavy and deeply engaging affair with the band offering different Psychedelic Sounds that leave the listener in a meditative state. The album can be deeply challenging to listen to at times especially when Green Oracle switch from straight-forward Psychedelic Stoner Metal to a harsher style of Doom/Drone Metal.

Opening song – Please – is an eighteen-minute epic that starts rather slowly before the band add heavier strands of Spaced Out sounds with a deeply rich Ambient score that reminds me of Ufomammut in places with traces of KYUSS heavy guitars leading the way. The song never outstays it’s welcome and that’s down to Green Oracle’s highly creative use of different Doom/Stoner Metal riffs that have quite an original feel to them. The vocals appear around the eight-minute mark and the song becomes more emotional as a direct result.

Second song – Do – is the most ambitious song on the album as the band take a different approach to the opening song. The eerie vocals create an intense atmosphere with Green Oracle playing Ambient/Drone based Doom for the first half of the song. This may put some people off if they’re expecting heavy sounding Doom/Stoner Metal riffs. This song is influenced by bands such as EARTH and BONG. The song lasts over twenty minutes and most of that time is dedicated to Green Oracle building an ice-cold drone based atmosphere. However, the band do play a “normal” style of Doom/Stoner Metal towards the end of the song. Maybe the band go over the top on this song but it’s a brilliantly weird and highly experimental song that actually makes sense within the context of the album.

Third song – Hallucinogens – carries on the eerie vocals heard on the previous song. However, Green Oracle play the heavy doomed out sounds from the very start and this allows the band to create the standout song on the album. The song runs yet again for an ambitious nineteen minutes and Green Oracle don’t waste a single second creating spellbinding world-weary Heavy Stoner riffs. The second half of the song starts to become heavier and distorted that allows Green Oracle to play some of the heaviest moments held on the album.

If you join up the titles of the three songs, then you can tell the mindset that Green Oracle had in mind for folks when listening to this album and perhaps when they made the album themselves. This album is Heavy Droned Out Psychedelic Stoner Doom of the highest order.

If you dig bands such as BONG, Ufomammut, Hawkwind and KYUSS then you need to check this album out now.

Words by Steve Howe

Review

Italian Sludge/Stoner Metal band - The Red Coil - new album, Himalayan Demons, doesn't offer anything new or ground-breaking within the genre. However their album is a thrilling and hugely entertaining ride that sees the band take direct influence from Spiritual Beggars and Corrosion Of Conformity though with a touch of NOLA/Southern Metal vibes holding everything together. It's a groove laiden affair with plenty of Psychedelic Weeidan style riffs and sounds that sees the band offer a melodic edge to their music.

Opening track - Withdrawal Syndrome Wall - is an almost down-tempo slice of modern Sludge/Stoner Metal with an equally heavy Doom and Gloom sounding atmosphere. The vocals are a mixture of harsh growls and clean vocals with both very easy to understand. The music is constantly heavy and gives the listener a good chance on what to expect for the remainder of the album.

Second track - Godforsaken - has a more NOLA-esque approach with The Red Coil channelling a more aggressive style of music. The vocals can be quite hard to understand at times but the music is main focus here. With hard-hitting riffs having the right amount of flair, creativity and passion. The sound and atmosphere of the album is very raw but the album is still superbly produced. Even two songs into the album.

The next two songs Oriental Lodge and Opium Smokers Room offer a more demonic and doomed out experience with the music being second best to the crazy lyrics The Red Coil have written here. The vocals are sung superbly well despite a few more rough moments where the listener maybe wondering what the lead vocalist is actually singing about. As he excels more at the clean based vocals than the hardcore based growls.

Other cool songs to check out on the album are: The Shroud, Moksha and When The Levee Breaks. All showing how good The Red Coil actually are merging the albums different sounds on the majority of the songs. Especially when the NOLA vibes fully take over on the second half of the album. As I stated earlier in the review, the production is fantastic despite the sound having a very raw and almost DIY feel.

The Red Coil makes you feel directly involved with the music itself and that's down to the band playing superbly heavy addictive riffs throughout the album. If you're looking for an album to settle your NOLA/Southern Metal cravings then Himalayan Demons is the album for you.

Exclusive Stream Of NEBULA - Let It Burn (Heavy Psych Records Reissue)

I became very excited when I heard the news that Heavy Psych Sounds announced it will work with California fuzz/psych legends Nebula to reissue three of the band’s most landmark offerings. Originally released in 1998, 1999 and 2002, respectively, Let it Burn, To the Center and Dos EPs and they will be made available as special editions to mark the 20th anniversary of the band.

Here's some cool info from the original press release:

"When guitarist/vocalist Eddie Glass joined forces with bassist Mark Abshire and drummer Ruben Romano — both previously of Fu Manchu — they found magic together and no one before and no other band since has been able to capture that sound in the same way, though plenty have tried. With Let it Burn, they established a place for themselves between druggy psych and forward-driving fuzz rock, and as they moved through the subsequent Sun Creature EP, their split with Sweden’s Lowrider and the To the Center full-length the next year, they only grew, progressed and refined this approach into something all the more their own.

The two short releases were later compiled as Dos EPs, and the flow contained there is no less pivotal than either Let it Burn or To the Center. Working exclusively in cooperation with the original members of Nebula, Heavy Psych Sounds will release Let it Burn, To the Center and Dos EPs in January, February and March, 2018 in vinyl, limited vinyl, CD and digital editions, each containing bonus material, extra songs and more.

Nebula have announced 2018 live dates with the lineup of Eddie Glass, bassist Tom Davies and drummer Mike Amster (Blaak Heat, Abrams), including stops at Desertfest London and Berlin with more to follow."

Well the 1st reissue of Let It Burn will be released this Friday and it's still my favourite release of Nebula. As is it showed you the potential of the band so early on in their career. This reissue has a couple of bonus tracks compared to the original release.

This is Psychedelic Fuzz at it's finest. It perhaps paved the way for other people to start their own Psychedelic Fuzz Rock band. Look what Gabriele Fiori of Heavy Psych Sounds had to say about working with Nebula on these reissues.

"It is an honor to have Eddie, Mark and Ruben come together to stand behind these three issues. These records are classics and have had a huge influence on me and an entire generation of artists and I can’t wait to get them back out there for people to dig into all over again!”

Now you can hear the reissue of Let It Burn in it's entirety. As the cool folks at Heavy Psych Sounds and Purple Sage PR have allowed me to stream the full record ahead of it's release this Friday

You can buy Let It Burn here from Heavy Psych Sounds.

Exclusive Album Stream - Blissful Stream/Lightsabres - Devil's Night to All Souls

After the time of harvest moon, moving through Hallow’s Eve to All Souls, and as the year’s twilight gains prominence, the times to follow are truly dire and cryptic.

You would so rend your flesh in hopes that it be repaired by another? Do so at your own behest, and freely of your own accord; you shan’t be considered above the greater darkness that looms. So be it that this was the price for your knowledge…

Although a new name for some, for those in the realm of proto-black metal, Blissful Stream shall be a welcome delight. The change was set for Martin Sällström to reemerge in 2016 from these past few years, after bidding farewell to a lengthy campaign with Swedish black metal legends Pest. Songs soaked in and inspired by 70’s and 80’s metal and spaghetti western death rock cloaks you; transporting you to simple yet bare times where souls rarely found peace. Following the brilliant debut EP for Dark Prod Records in ‘Ascending Demons’, the raw energy and intensity on this split unfolds itself to all, spurred on by raw DIY direct ethic.

With a slightly alternative approach, not unlike his countryman with whom he shares the Devil’s Night to All Souls EP, the year darkens also for John Strömshed of Lightsabres.. Also the leader with rustic Swedish rockers Tunga Möln, he has also crafted warped stoner-punk and alterna-grunge masterworks as Lightsabres to the glee of fans worldwide for the last few years. The last few releases had seen also certain tracks with much darker and disparaging feels; almost a terrific segue to these three tracks on offer for around the season of decay.

These two shadowy sons of Sweden come together to tell of the soul stripped bare, cautionary heralds, and folk songs of despair. The EP is set to be released on Black Friday, November 24th, 2017 on Medusa Crush Recordings in digital and limited high-bias cassette formats initially, to be followed by a limited digipack CD run later on.

Tracklisting:

01. Fallen From Grace
02. Dead Of Night
03. A Vision From Below
04. Blues From The End Of A Rope
05. Anyone
06. Darkness On My Trail

Release date: November 24th, 2017

4.Turbines
5.Watchmaker

The Lowdown:

I first came across Italian Sludge/Doom Metallers - NIBIRU - back in 2012 when I was still involved with The Sludgelord.

I reviewed their debut album - Caosgon - which I rated very highly back in the day. The band impressed me with their psychedelic ritual sludge based sounds set against a dronish backdrop of experimental sounds.

Since then NIBIRU have gone to make a name for themselves within the Doom/Sludge Metal community. The band are now signed to Argonauta Records who are about to re-release Caosgon.

Now again available with a totally new artwork, remastered sound and a bonus song previously unreleased, from the original recording sessions. The cool folks over at Argonauta Records know that I'm a huge fan of this album and they've indly let me premiere the whole new album in full.

Caosgon – 2017 Edition is a more gloomier and disturbing offering than the original. With the slightly more creepy artwork drawing you into NIBIRU's disturbing world.
Now you can experience the new album the way it's meant to be heard. The band are currently at work recording their new album due for release in 2018.

Words by Steve Howe

Thanks to Argonauta Records for the premiere. You can now pre-order Caosgon - 2017 Edition on CD/DD via Argonauta Records from July 7th 2017.

Review

It's time for another quality release from Argonauta Records. This time they’ve signed a fairly new Italian Psychedelic Stoner/Grunge Band called Mars Era. Mars Era debut album Dharmanaut is a hard-hitting combination of Alt Rock, Grunge, Psych and Stoner Rock with trippy Space Rock vibes keeping everything together.

Opening track – Enemy Was A Friend Of Mine – takes a few moments for the heavy sound to appear though it’s still a very good song to open the album with. Grungy Spaced Out riffs with a side of heavy psychedelic noises show that Mars Era is in highly confident form. The vocals are primarily in the Alt Rock arena but with a dark soulful blues based vibe.

Second track – Emprisoned – has a dark lyrical theme held within the song with the Grunge/Stoner sounds offering a clearer and heavier experience than the opening track. Mars Era offers a doomier sound with the other elements being played in the background. You can hear shades of Soundgarden and Black Sabbath in this song and certain parts of the album at times.

Third track – The Leap – is a nine minute plus epic with Mars Era finally starting to make cool original sounds of their own. The song opens with heavy psychedelic guitar riffs that start very slowly before the lead vocalist puts in another impressive vocal performance. The song is very progressive in parts as it can be broken down into individual chapters as the band move from one genre to the next. Space, Grunge, Stoner and Psych Rock all expertly played.

The first three songs is a good indication on what to fully expect with the remaining four songs on the album. Heavy Psychedelic riffs with the band showing a keen ear for sonic experimentation on the final two songs – Lincancabur and Desolate Wasteland. Two more epic songs where Mars Era proves once again they have a talent for writing progressive catchy riffs and intriguing lyrics to match.

The final track – Desolate Wasteland – is the standout track as it’s a majestic ride that opens with quietly played swirling psychedelic noises before the heavy riffs appear. The vocals has shades of John Garcia matched against Tool-esque riffs.

Dharmanaut feels like a concept album of sorts. The album has a beginning, middle and end with each part offering a different sound that allows Mars Era to make a lasting impression. The album is superbly produced which is surprising since Argonauta Records are releasing this album. Argonauta Records always release well-produced albums and they always sound top-notch. Still overall credit has to goto Mars Era for creating an intriguing and well executed album that flows naturally from start to finish.

If you’re in the mood for a Progressive Space/Grunge/Stoner Rock album packed full of heavy noises then Dharmanaut is the album for you. Mars Era has delivered a well-crafted and brilliantly entertaining album.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Words by Steve Howe

Careful Wishes - Interview With Thomas from White Light Cemetery And Exclusive Album Stream

I'm going to keep this introduction brief. As White Light Cemetery have a lot going for them.
  • Their new album is being released by powerhouse record label – Ripple Music
  • The band play an exciting blend of Southern Metal and Stoner Rock.
  • If you dig Crowbar then you're going to dig this a band a great deal.
  • We've got a cool interview with drummer Thomas Collley.
  • Plus an exclusive stream of the album.
  • Check this great band out now as White Light Cemetery will be turning some heads and making themselves known over the next few months or so..

Hi Thomas. Thanks for doing the interview. How’s life treating you today?

Well, Mardi Gras season started a couple days ago, so that means king cake. And also, our new album on Ripple Music is dropping this week. So, yeah, life is good!

For people not in the know, can you provide a brief history of how the band came together and where it is today?

The band was started in late 2008 by Ryan and Shea and a couple other guys. I joined in August of 2010 when the original drummer was moving across the state. About a year later we parted ways with one of our guitar players, so Shea, who had been doing only vocals up until that point, picked up his guitar and filled that spot too. Then Tara came into the fold in late 2012. And that's been our lineup for the last four years.

Why did you call your band White Light Cemetery?

Ryan named the band. It's actually a line from the Machine Head song, ‘Now I Lay Thee Down’. He just thought it had a ring to it.

How would you describe your music for first-time listeners?

Our music is very diverse, I think. It's definitely rooted in heavy rock n' roll of the 70's but has lots of other influences in there as well. Southern rock, blues, metal. There's a little bit of everything.

We are here to talk about the new album. Careful What You Wish For. A great album packed full of heavy Southern Rock/Metal riffs. What can people expect from the album?

Again, diversity. There's a pretty good mix of musical styles on it. A couple heavy tunes, a couple bluesy tunes, a couple straight up rockers. We kind of run the gamut on this album.

What is the overall concept of the album?

We didn't really have a clear cut concept going into it. This album is just the result of the four of us being in a room together and playing music that we love. Nothing overly complicated or thought out. Whatever happens, happens.

Why did you call the album – Careful What You Wish For. Any specific meaning?

Mainly, we just thought it was a catchy title. But it's also a response to all of our friends who kept on hounding us for new tunes for the last couple of years.

Was it an easy or hard album to write and record for?

It was a pretty easy one to write. Ryan would usually come into the practice room with some ideas and we'd jam on them until it was a song. Came together pretty easy. As far as recording, it was a piece of cake. We did everything live except for vocals and guitar overdubs. It was recorded at Crystal Clear Sound in Dallas with Kent Stump of Wo Fat. That guy is awesome!

What influenced you when recording and writing this album?

Mostly the music we're listening to at the time. Free, Bad Company, Mountain, and Deep Purple were all on heavy rotation while we were writing this one.

You’ve signed to Ripple Music. How did you hook up with that great label?

They found us actually. I think Todd had gotten a hold of our "Crow Sessions" demo and written a little piece on it on The Ripple Effect. After that he just kind of stayed in touch and kept tabs on us. Then in mid 2014 they finally got to see us perform live and that kind of sealed the deal. We signed with them shortly after that.

Were you aware of Ripple Music before you signed to them? Had you heard of them before. Did you have offers from other labels?

Honestly, I wasn't aware of Ripple until they began talking to us. We had talked with a couple other labels but we didn't really pursue any of those seriously. We were just kind of keeping our fingers crossed that Ripple would want to give us a shot.

Some people have compared your music to Crowbar. Are you pleased with that comparison or would you want people to classify you as White Light Cemetery?

Both actually. Crowbar is one of our favourite bands and also very good friends of ours, so to be compared to them is definitely a cool thing. But, at the same time, we definitely want to be known as a band that has their own sound.

You’ve toured with Crowbar. How was the experience overall and how did you manage to support them on tour?

It was awesome beyond words! It was our first tour as well, so to be able to do that with Crowbar was pretty amazing. They were coming off a hiatus and Kirk had just quit Down to focus 100% on Crowbar. He was looking to hit the road for a bit before they went to the studio and he knew we had this huge tour van. So he called us up and said let's pile up in your van and do a couple weeks of shows. So that's how we ended up doing that.

What is the song-writing dynamic in the band. Is it down to one individual or a group collective?

A little of both actually. Most of the time Ryan or Shea will come to practice with riffs or song ideas then we'll work with that to make it into a song. There are a couple songs on this album that actually came about as spur of the moment jams in the practice room, which I think was a first for us.

Will you be performing gigs this year. A more in-depth tour to promote the album. Are there plans to perform any overseas such as Europe?

Absolutely! We already have a few shows booked for January and a short tour in March, which includes a Ripple Music showcase at South by Southwest in Austin. We're planning on keeping fairly busy for the rest of this year. Hopefully a more extensive tour this summer and playing in cities we've never played in. As far as Europe, that's definitely a dream of ours. We don't really have any contacts over there yet but we're working on getting over there.

Words by Steve Howe and Thomas Colley

Thanks to Richard at Sheltered Life PR for this interview and exclusive album stream. Thank to Thomas for doing this interview. Careful What You Wish For will be available to buy on CD/DD/Vinyl from Ripple Music from Jan 13th 2017.
