Review

In Search Of The Cosmic Tale: Crossing The Galactic Portal is the new split album release from two of the coolest and mightiest bands from the Stoner Rock scene joining forces for an exciting and action packed release. NEBULA and BLACK RAINBOW are both perhaps legendary bands to their legion of dedicated followers. Both bands provide three tracks of new music totalling around sixteen minutes each which does offer a different take of Stoner Rock they’re currently known for at times.

This record has come at a sad time for NEBULA with the sad passing of their bassist Ranch Seroni and NEBULA’s side of this split album acts as perfect homage to his huge talent brought to NEBULA in such a short space of time.

NEBULA’s three tracks are spliced with their trademark blend of Psych, Stoner, Rock and FUZZY GOODNESS with equal amounts of freaky SPACE ROCK guitars with a killer Garage Rock attitude that comes straight out of the top drawer of 1970’s Heavy RAWK. Eddie’s vocals remain a constant presence but it’s the music that does all the talking especially on tracks such as Acid Drop and Cesar XXXIV being the heaviest and standout parts of their set. Their excellent second track Eye Of The Storm has a more mellow feel and attitude with a Sludgy undergroove knowing exactly when to appear.

The lyrics from NEBULA follow the same creative charge that has appeared on their last couple studio albums with the right amount of Punk Rock attitude to allow their side of their release be the most rebellious part as well.

Black Rainbows have elevated themselves to be one of the premier Fuzz/Stoner Metal acts of the scene over the last decade or so with a string of classic albums to their name. The music here returns to their roots in places and not as heavy as their last couple releases though there’s a similar sound within the excellent opening track The Secret heard on their acclaimed last album Superskull.

There’s a vintage Garage/Street Rock sound coming from the heavy FUZZED UP guitars and Gabe’s vocals seem to be a bit more in the background here with the music being more dominant. However, the music is constantly engaging and sees Black Rainbows continuously live up to their formidable reputation with epic FUZZY and SEEDY guitars leading the way.

Second track Thunder Lights On The Greatest Sky is my favourite track from Black Rainbows with it’s glorious RAWK and FUZZ aggressive energy which has small moments of Psychedelic Cosmic melodies that builds upto a playful atmosphere.

The final track Dogs Of War sees Black Rainbows offer a more dogged and determined approach to their music with Psychedelic laid-back COSMIC energy appearing with Gabe’s vocals and the FUZZY grooves being quite mellow compared to Black Rainbows standards. However, the song changes into a heavier and familiar style of music we all love and know that the band are capable of delivering with one final round of Stoner Rock/Metal magic.

In Search Of The Cosmic Tale: Crossing The Galactic Portal is another outstanding split release from Heavy Psych Sounds featuring two great bands at the top of their game and bringing exciting new sounds and grooves we come to expect from them.

Awesome. End Of.

Review

Legendary Psych Stoner Rockers Nebula had to contend with the untimely death of their longtime bandmate Tom Davies earlier this year whilst preparing for their current European Tour which has been going down a storm with fans who've attended every gig. The band are about to release their new live album Livewired In Europe which captured the band on their Transmission From Mothership Earth European Tour 2023. This album features the band in action on that tour with Nebula on fine crazed form playing a selection of their greatest hits.

Livewired In Europe is a raw and honest sounding account of how Nebula sounded on tour with a rebellious attitude that has served the band well over the last twenty six years though the band were inactive for seven of those years. The album has a certain Garage Rock sound with the production values being quite DIY based and shows you all the warped sounds that Nebula play on this album. The band are on FIRE on this release playing a selection of classic tracks aloggside tracks from their recent albums such as Holy Shit and Transmission From Mothership Earth.

Nebula have always had a more outlandish sound compared to their contemporaries of the scene. This allows Nebula to be one of the most adventurous bands within the scene that allows this album to have the same sort of vibe of Classic Live Albums that were released in the 1970's. The album maybe made up by multiple performances but that doesn't stop Livewired In Europe to be one of the most freakiest live albums I've heard in some time with Nebula showcasing their legendary Psychedelic Stoner Rock sound with many moments o

f distorted and screeched grooves to an ever appreciative audience.

Livewired In Europe is a must have release for not only fans of Nebula but for fans of Psychedelic Stoner Rock as this sees Nebula at the peak of their creative powers for a KICK-ASS action packed release. This is a CLASSIC LIVE ALBUM through and through. End Of Discussion and acts as a fitting tribute to Tom Davies.

Guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano formed NEBULA in 1997 after breaking away from desert rock pioneers Fu Manchu, eventually recruiting bassist Mark Abshire. The power trio specializes in feedback-drenched heavy rock, incorporating liberal doses of Black Sabbath riffery, psychedelia, and space rock. The band released a number of EPs before moving onto full-length albums like 1999's 'To the Center' and 2001's 'Charged'. NEBULA creates pure guitar-driven, conscious expanding rock for the 21st century. They are a culmination of their rock forbearers such as Jimi Hendrix, MC5, The Stooges and Mudhoney turned up a notch, taken to the next level and blasting through space. They spread their gospel through their music and what they are preaching will leave the congregation on the floor.

In 2017 the band decided to reissue three of their crucial early works via Heavy Psych Sounds Records: 1998’s 'Let it Burn', 1999’s 'To the Center' and 2002’s 'Dos EPs' (which includes the material originally released on 1999’s 'Sun Creature' and the Nebula/Lowrider split). In the summer of 2020, after 13 years NEBULA returned with not only a new lineup but also their long-awaited new full-length 'Holy Shit', which was acclaimed as a "massive return to form" by Metal Hammer. The mighty trio released their latest album 'Transmission From Mothership Earth" in the summer of 2022 through their home stable Heavy Psych Sounds Records, eight summer feel-good hits feeling "like cruising through a cosmic desert" according to Metal Injection editors.

Review

Legendary Stoner Rockers Nebula return with their new album Transmission From Mothership Earth and continue the seedy journey heard on 2019's Holy Shit. Nebula draw upon their main strengths of being one of the mainstay underground bands of the last 30 years. Adopting a more FUZZ ROCK attitude compared to Holy Shit but still allowing themselves the opportunity to bring a more surreal Space Rock narrative which has been dormant for the last few Nebula releases.

The music is constantly evolving and changing which you can hear and wholly appreciate on the excellent opening song Highwired. Loud Psychedelic Jams merge with FUZZ based Cosmic grooves with Eddie's undeniable vocals having a Garage Rock approach. The song becomes ever so immersed with 70's based Psych/Space Rock with the trippy use of soundclips and glitches that accompany the later stages of the track.

Second track is the title track with Transmission From Mothership Earth having a Monster Magnet style influence throughout pretty much everything on this track but Nebula goes to seedier places that Monster Magnet haven't visited in the best part of two decades. A seedy and delirious song that has a raucous attitude with it's free flowing style of Garage based Psych Stoner Rock. The lyrics are quite out there with the music being quite adventurous with the guitars moving between areas of 70s Psych Rock and 90s Desert/Stoner Metal.

Third song Wilted Flowers is a hallucinogenic and proper "WEEDIAN" take of the finer and FUZZIER elements of Stoner Rock/Metal. A kick-ass and vocal performance from Eddie takes centre stage from this song with the music being distorted in all of the right places. Swirls of Psychedelic Noises appear and you feel you're back in the classic heyday of the 90's Stoner Rock scene. The music is aggressive with Nebula becoming more of a Garage/Fuzz Rock back towards the later stages of the track.

Fourth song Melt Your Head carries on the laid back and FUZZ ROCK attitude of the album but with Nebula adding a SONIC EXPERIMENTATION vibe that ultimately moves further into AMPLIFIER WORSHIP or LOW & SLOW territory. The glitches are an added bonus with Eddie's easy going vocals allowing Nebula to breathe new life into their creative vision. Parts Hawkwind and Monster Magnet may slightly influence this track. However, this remains Nebula's show and they revel with their distorted Garage/Fuzz Rock vision which allows this track to be one of the heaviest, seediest and best tracks on the album.

Things go slightly crazier and demonic with the standout track on the album as Warzone Speedwulf is NEBULA at their most flamboyant and dangerous best. A more aggressive and fast-paced sound with gloomy eerie vocals coming in and out of focus. The music is perhaps on the more experimental side with Nebula playing different styles of Psychedelic Rock that even see a sludgy atmosphere to appear in places. The song and production of the album is stripped back for a "less is more" which works surprisingly well with the style of music that Nebula plays on this album.

The remaining 3 songs of the album I Got So High, Existential Blues and The Four Horseman allows Nebula to go even further with their newfound style of Distorted Psych Stoner Rock. The sonic experimentation perhaps goes even further on I Got So High and The Four Horseman but Nebula never forgets who they are. As they play some classic NEBULA grooves along the way. The music maybe distorted and ever so twisted. However, this album allows NEBULA to be themselves with the album containing their legendary classic trademark sounds played to absolute Psychedelic Perfection. With some of the songs containing wonderful sing-along choruses especially on I Got So High.

Nebula may not get the same love or recognition as the classic bands of the Stoner Rock/Metal scene. However, these guys deserve to be mentioned alongside them and Transmission From Mothership Earth only proves that point.

Transmission From Mothership Earth is another outstanding album from Nebula.

LIVE IN THE MOJAVE DESERT Series Announced

The most exciting outdoor event in rock has today been launched: LIVE IN THE MOJAVE DESERT is a livestream concert film series, deep in the heart of the California wilderness, with performances from Earthless, Nebula, Spirit Mother, Mountain Tamer, and Stoner.

Tickets are available to purchase now: http://cdwa.tixr.com

Individual concert tickets will be available as well as discounted series passes.

Watch the teaser here.

Schedule:

EARTHLESS: Saturday 23rd January, 2021
NEBULA: Saturday 6th February, 2021
SPIRIT MOTHER: Saturday 20th February, 2021
MOUNTAIN TAMER: Saturday 6th March, 2021
STONER (Brant Bjork + Ryan Gut + Nick Oliveri): Saturday 20th March, 2021

Inspired by Pink Floyd's iconic Live At Pompeii film, each of the concert films will be premiered online, and presented in a two-hour long live, hosted program. Some of the biggest desert rock legends will be on set attending and hosting, and the bands themselves will join the stream.

Each film will be released as a live album, with LP, CD, and DVD pre-orders to be announced soon. The project is presented by CDWA Records (California Desert Wizards Association) who have strived to present the best in the desert rock scene, and introduce some of the most exciting new talent.

The project includes new band STONER, a trio of Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork (Kyuss), with Ryan Gut on drums.

Brant Bjork comments: "CDWA once again commits to the ultimate Rock n Roll experience for the fans and the bands regardless of what might stand in the way. Covid literally shut down live performance around the world... what do you do? You use your imagination and you go all in. Congrats to CDWA and all the bands and crew involved in this Rock n Roll response of light in this year of concert stage darkness."

On the formation of STONER and playing with Nick once again: "I remember playing Ramones songs with Nick in his mom’s living room in Palm Desert when we were kids. Nick and I have roots that go deep. Together again as the appropriately named STONER. A testament to our collective and individual dedication to our past, our present and our future Rock n Roll."

Nick Oliveri comments: "Well I think that California Desert Wizards Association is doing a great thing and a new thing under the circumstances of COVID-19, because what I do for a living stopped cold, dead in its tracks. I feel the powers that be are trying to stop and kill music or live music and I believe Dr. Jones is doing a great thing by keeping it alive. We need more people like him coming forward. Let me add, what a cool original idea - live stream while releasing a live record. For a collector like myself this is a great thing! Big cigars and cold beers to CDWA records. RnR will never die."

CDWA have implemented a custom link program which gives a portion of sales to their affiliates who sell tickets to the shows. They're creating a network of clubs, promoters, record stores and venues across the globe to help support the musical scene in this more desperate of years.

If you're interested in joining, please get in touch here.

To support your local participating venue, buy through their link. More information to follow.

There is no overestimating the level of undertaking on show in the LIVE IN THE MOJAVE DESERT series. Driving tonnes of gear 30 miles out into the desert to film five bands in four days, with 25 people onsite daily - the level of effort shows in a stunning range of unique musical experiences.

In the words of Earthless' Mario Rubalcaba: "Setting up and playing our jams loudly out in the Mojave desert at night with Mad Alchemy's lightshow all around us will forever be a really great memory.  I wonder how many animals were listening?  Happy it was documented."

CDWA's Ryan Jones' statement: "This was a major undertaking to bring this many people and this much gear out to a very remote desert location. Including the bands we had 25 people onsite daily. Generators. Meals. Tacos. Burgers. Vegan food. Water. Coffee. Weed, Beer & Booze. Camping gear. Handwashing. Covid prevention plans. Portapots. Stage lights. Liquid light show. Full Sound System. So much cable to bury. Backline. Pro Tools Recording System. Computers. Cameras. Drones. Bands. Backline. Everything that came in had to go out, of course. With only one road in, all of these people and all of this stuff had to come up a half mile long hill of deep desert sand; 30 miles from nowhere. We had to hire local desert guys with huge 4x4 pickups to tow things up, tow things down, shuttle the bands, shuttle their gear, guitars, drums, and occasionally to rescue our vehicles. It was insane, but we did it for the love of the project and we really wanted to see our favorite bands play again!"

Review

Greetings all,

Holy Shit may just be the most appropriately titled record ever. After nearly 10 years Nebula has unleashed one of the jaw dropping-est, straight up killer records in recent memory. Having reformed a few years back, the band returns with their trademark, hazy, grunge fuelled brand of stoner rock that whether we realized it or not, we needed and were missing. This is the band’s 6th full length, along with a slew of EP's and whatnot and honestly it is, in my humble opinion, their best record to date. The riffs are strong, the vibe is hazy, the song writing is top notch.

Man’s Best Friend opens the album and after a few seconds if some kind of almost unidentifiable sound (wink, wink) kicks in hard with a killer riff/groove in this loving homage to Lucifer. All praise to him and the awesomeness he brings. The dark, heavy fuzz continues with Messiah, a slightly slower tempo opens the track before kicking in hard and heavy. My favorite track on the album follows, The sludged out, riff heavy, catchy as hell, It’s All Over has a real grunge inspired feel and a chorus that snags your soul.

Witching Hour keeps the driving beat going with a march like feel and strained vocal, classic rock vibe.

Fistful of Pills is a killer, mostly instrumental, reverb laden homage to spaghetti westerns and surf rock. Another amazing song follows with slower, but ever shifting, Tomorrow Never Comes. The song rocks hard, while incorporating some acoustic guitars and a ton of fuzz before morphing into smooth, kind of flamenco inspired outro. Gates of Eden has cool retro late 60’s/early 70’s psych pop feel. Perhaps a little Kinks/Stones or the such. The band channels a full on early Mudhoney vibe on Let’s Get Lost. Perhaps a bit of homage to their old label Sub Pop. The track sounds like it came out of those late 80’s/early 90’s garage/grunge records from the Pacific Northwest.

The band brings in the reverb and acoustic guitars for the moody closing track. The Cry of a Tortured World is a 7+ minute masterpiece of blissful, stoned out blues rock that ends the record on a harmonious note.

There isn’t much more to be said about this band, their awesome discography, and this amazing record. If you are reading this, you obviously have to know Nebula and what they are about. I am glad they are back cruising around the desert, or the cosmos, or whatever murky haze you might see. Go out and completely dig on the bands righteous return. Here’s to more shit coming our way!

Stream Of NEBULA - DOS EPs (Heavy Psych Records Reissue)

Nebula is one of those bands that would have fit perfectly on a concert bill with Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, or the Stooges circa 1973. The power trio of Eddie Glass (vocals, guitars), Ruben Romano (drums), and Mark Abshire (bass) has quietly fused a somewhat modernized but highly distinctive '70s hard rock sound all its own.

Releasing Dos Eps is a smart move, combining the very limited Sun Creature EP and the Meteor City split with three additional songs that groove on raunchy guitar hooks, opaque slacker vocals, and bleed-heavy drumming. Of the unreleased material, "Long Day" pegs an infectious hard-luck guitar swagger against a catchy slippery rhythm,

Thanks to Heavy Psych Sounds and Purple Sage PR, we can premiere the new version of this classic EP in all it's Stoner/Fuzz Rock glory. Ahead of it's release on Friday 2nd March 2018.

Exclusive Stream Of NEBULA - Let It Burn (Heavy Psych Records Reissue)

I became very excited when I heard the news that Heavy Psych Sounds announced it will work with California fuzz/psych legends Nebula to reissue three of the band’s most landmark offerings. Originally released in 1998, 1999 and 2002, respectively, Let it Burn, To the Center and Dos EPs and they will be made available as special editions to mark the 20th anniversary of the band.

Here's some cool info from the original press release:

"When guitarist/vocalist Eddie Glass joined forces with bassist Mark Abshire and drummer Ruben Romano — both previously of Fu Manchu — they found magic together and no one before and no other band since has been able to capture that sound in the same way, though plenty have tried. With Let it Burn, they established a place for themselves between druggy psych and forward-driving fuzz rock, and as they moved through the subsequent Sun Creature EP, their split with Sweden’s Lowrider and the To the Center full-length the next year, they only grew, progressed and refined this approach into something all the more their own.

The two short releases were later compiled as Dos EPs, and the flow contained there is no less pivotal than either Let it Burn or To the Center. Working exclusively in cooperation with the original members of Nebula, Heavy Psych Sounds will release Let it Burn, To the Center and Dos EPs in January, February and March, 2018 in vinyl, limited vinyl, CD and digital editions, each containing bonus material, extra songs and more.

Nebula have announced 2018 live dates with the lineup of Eddie Glass, bassist Tom Davies and drummer Mike Amster (Blaak Heat, Abrams), including stops at Desertfest London and Berlin with more to follow."

Well the 1st reissue of Let It Burn will be released this Friday and it's still my favourite release of Nebula. As is it showed you the potential of the band so early on in their career. This reissue has a couple of bonus tracks compared to the original release.

This is Psychedelic Fuzz at it's finest. It perhaps paved the way for other people to start their own Psychedelic Fuzz Rock band. Look what Gabriele Fiori of Heavy Psych Sounds had to say about working with Nebula on these reissues.

"It is an honor to have Eddie, Mark and Ruben come together to stand behind these three issues. These records are classics and have had a huge influence on me and an entire generation of artists and I can’t wait to get them back out there for people to dig into all over again!”

Now you can hear the reissue of Let It Burn in it's entirety. As the cool folks at Heavy Psych Sounds and Purple Sage PR have allowed me to stream the full record ahead of it's release this Friday
