Review

In Search Of The Cosmic Tale: Crossing The Galactic Portal is the new split album release from two of the coolest and mightiest bands from the Stoner Rock scene joining forces for an exciting and action packed release. NEBULA and BLACK RAINBOW are both perhaps legendary bands to their legion of dedicated followers. Both bands provide three tracks of new music totalling around sixteen minutes each which does offer a different take of Stoner Rock they’re currently known for at times.

This record has come at a sad time for NEBULA with the sad passing of their bassist Ranch Seroni and NEBULA’s side of this split album acts as perfect homage to his huge talent brought to NEBULA in such a short space of time.

NEBULA’s three tracks are spliced with their trademark blend of Psych, Stoner, Rock and FUZZY GOODNESS with equal amounts of freaky SPACE ROCK guitars with a killer Garage Rock attitude that comes straight out of the top drawer of 1970’s Heavy RAWK. Eddie’s vocals remain a constant presence but it’s the music that does all the talking especially on tracks such as Acid Drop and Cesar XXXIV being the heaviest and standout parts of their set. Their excellent second track Eye Of The Storm has a more mellow feel and attitude with a Sludgy undergroove knowing exactly when to appear.

The lyrics from NEBULA follow the same creative charge that has appeared on their last couple studio albums with the right amount of Punk Rock attitude to allow their side of their release be the most rebellious part as well.

Black Rainbows have elevated themselves to be one of the premier Fuzz/Stoner Metal acts of the scene over the last decade or so with a string of classic albums to their name. The music here returns to their roots in places and not as heavy as their last couple releases though there’s a similar sound within the excellent opening track The Secret heard on their acclaimed last album Superskull. 

There’s a vintage Garage/Street Rock sound coming from the heavy FUZZED UP guitars and Gabe’s vocals seem to be a bit more in the background here with the music being more dominant. However, the music is constantly engaging and sees Black Rainbows continuously live up to their formidable reputation with epic FUZZY and SEEDY guitars leading the way.

Second track Thunder Lights On The Greatest Sky is my favourite track from Black Rainbows with it’s glorious RAWK and FUZZ aggressive energy which has small moments of Psychedelic Cosmic melodies that builds upto a playful atmosphere. 

The final track Dogs Of War sees Black Rainbows offer a more dogged and determined approach to their music with Psychedelic laid-back COSMIC energy appearing with Gabe’s vocals and the FUZZY grooves being quite mellow compared to Black Rainbows standards. However, the song changes into a heavier and familiar style of music we all love and know that the band are capable of delivering with one final round of Stoner Rock/Metal magic.

In Search Of The Cosmic Tale: Crossing The Galactic Portal is another outstanding split release from Heavy Psych Sounds featuring two great bands at the top of their game and bringing exciting new sounds and grooves we come to expect from them.

Stoner Rock Heavyweights BLACK RAINBOWS announce European Tour and "Carmina Diabolo" album reissue on Heavy Psych Sounds.

Italy's stoner rock spearhead BLACK RAINBOWS are gearing up for an extensive string of European shows including appearances at Hellfest and Palp Fest, and announce the CD reissue of their 2008 sophomore album "Carmina Diabolo" on Heavy Psych Sounds Records.

Italian stoner rock spearhead BLACK RAINBOWS returned with a bang in 2023 with their ninth album "Superskull" — an asphalt-burning and psych-drenched masterwork hailed as "a weighty slab of Sabbathian party-heavy stoner doom" by Classic Rock Magazine — and have no intention in slowing down in their heads-down conquest as they are set to embark for a series of European shows and festival appearances this year. The Roman trio will also reissue the long out-of-print CD version of their fuzzy sophomore full-length "Carmina Diabolo" on April 5th, with preorders available at this location.

Review

Superskull is the new album from Italian Psych Stoner/Fuzz Rock legends Black Rainbows and it's easily one of their most entertaining and perhaps vital albums to date. The album is packed full of exciting Fuzz based Psych Stoner Rock grooves. The Cosmic feel of the last few albums is ever present but the band do bring a more subdued style of Spaced Out Rock for the more mellower parts of the album. However, when the time calls for Black Rainbows to burst out a THICK HEAVY COSMIC GROOVE then they appear suddenly like magic.

Superskull has a "BACK TO BASICS" approach with almost every part of the album. As the sound is more stripped back and has that classic Seventies Hard Rock feel but still remaining an essential Black Rainbows album. 

The opening two songs of Apocalypse March and Superhero Dopeproof has a buoyant Garage Rock appeal that reminds me of MC5 at times. The confident levels of aggressive Fuzz and catchy modern day Psychedelic flashes has served Black Rainbows amazingly well in the past and it works here. Both songs allow the band to try different creative themes for their music. The lyrics have a sense of rebellion to them with a fantastical outlook appearing within the lyrics. Lead vocalist Gabe is in inspired form and sounds amazing here. 

There's some KICK-ASS singalong moments to this album and this appears early on within these two tracks with the classic Stoner grooves allowing Black Rainbows to play a more vital style of music for the remainder of the album.

Black Rainbows do go all out for Superskull. As the album lasts for about an hour or so across twelve tracks and the band cover a lot of creative ground within the Stoner Rock/Metal grooves that appear on the album. With many different styles of Fuzz Rock, Psych Rock and Cosmic Rock having the right balance of Classic Hard Rock themes and Modern Day WEEDIAN grooves for a more adventurous sound especially on tracks such as: Children Of Fire And Sacrifices, Cosmic Ride Of The Crystal Skull, Till The OuterSpace, Lone Wulf, Desert Sun, Megalomania and Fire In The Sky just being my favourite parts of the album.

I would love to do an in-depth track by track review of Superskull. However, there's too many great songs to actually cover. If you're a fan of this legendary band then you know what to expect and they deliver on all fronts with sublime grooves and catchy passionate vocals to match. 

Superskull can be quite dark and moody within the later stages of the album but Black Rainbows keep things moving forward with highly addictive and superbly melodic extended guitar jams which is a trademark of the band's sound. 

The record also employs heavy use of Psychedelic Noises and Ambient Sounds to give Black Rainbows a more cinematic and progressive feel compared to their recent albums. With moments of Heavy Psychedelic Doom sounds being used more and more on the second half of the album. Superskull does feel that Black Rainbows are reinventing themselves for the better with a classic storytelling aspect beginning to appear within their lyrics and the great use of Ambient and Heavy Psychedelic sounds for an album that feels like a force of nature at times.

Superskull is enhanced by first rate production values which is hardly surprising since Gabe's very own highly regarded record label Heavy Psych Sounds is releasing this bad-boy. So be prepared for an aggressively LOUD album with fantastic amounts of high pitched FUZZ to make your ears bleed with serious intent..

I ranked Black Rainbows last album Cosmic Ritual Supertrip as my favourite album of theirs back in 2020. However, I've changed my mind yet again. As Superskull is without doubt Black Rainbow's finest work to date and could become one of the most definitive Stoner Rock/Metal albums of the year. 

This is another Album Of The Year contender from one of the true legends of the Psychedelic Stoner Metal underground scene.

Italian Fuzz Rock Legends – Black Rainbows – return with their latest and perhaps greatest album to date with the band offering a more refined and action-packed sound that takes all the best elements of previous albums whilst allowing Black Rainbows moving their sound forward into the next decade and beyond. Black Rainbows continue their journey with Heavy Psychedelic Grooves that has their trademark style of Fuzz Rock, Psych Rock and Stoner Rock with a kick-ass 70s vintage sound.

The album starts with the fast-paced and upbeat sounds of – At Midnight You Cry – with the bands trademark FUZZY riffs moving along with a nice addictive edge. Gabriele is on inspired form with his excellent vocals that offer his usual top-notch performance with soulful attitude and experience to match. The music has always been Black Rainbows main strength and the band don’t disappoint with this hard-edge rocker that runs under 3 minutes but it’s a good indicator of how good this album really is and I appreciated the more sleazier sounding aspects of the album but that could be my own personal conclusion.

Second song – Universal Phase – is classic Black Rainbows through and through with a deeply satisfying vintage Psych/Space Rock sound with a dirty FUZZ Rock atmosphere allowing the band to add soundbytes to their music that brings in a 50s B Movie attitude to the mix. The song becomes a more livelier affair when the 50s soundbytes dictate on how the song plays out with great vocals and lyrics adding an extra layer of Stoner Rock class to the overall feel and sound of the album.

Third song – Radio 666 – is easily one of the most addictive songs on the album with superbly written lyrics that are quite easy to remember which allows the listener to become part of the action. The music does take time to fully get going but Black Rainbows have more time to play with this song and they play a more well rounded style of music on this song which is one of my favourite songs on the album.

The band continue their epic journey of focusing upon the best years of 70s Hard Rock and combining the Psychedelic Aggression of 90s Stoner Rock/Metal that will leave you with an almighty warm glow despite the current dark times that the whole world is going through.

Other standout songs on the album include, Isolation, Hypnotized By The Solenoid, Master Rocket Power Blast and Sacred Graal. Though the real highlight is perhaps the final two songs (Searching For Satellites Parts 1 & 2 and Fire Breather) which sees Black Rainbows offer an Acoustic Style of music we rarely hear from the band but this is a superbly written collection of two songs that we would perhaps expect from Gabriele other musical project – The Pilgrim.

Cosmic Ritual Supertrip features fantastic production which is always a given with Black Rainbows and albums released by Heavy Psych Sounds. So expect a vibrant and quite loud album especially when the DOOMIER aspects of the record appear throughout the album.

Overall, Cosmic Ritual Supertrip only enhances Black Rainbows reputation as one of today’s best bands within the Stoner Rock/Metal scene. This is a Top 10 album of the year contender for myself and I believe you will see this album in similar positions on other lists when the year is out.

Greetings All,

Music, especially underground/indie music, can be weird, especially in regards to discovering new music. I have been given the amazing opportunity to listen to tons of music that without Steve and this awesome adventure he has allowed me to tag along on I would never have found on my own. The situation I often find myself in is that either I am familiar with and in love with a band from what seems like day one, or I completely miss the boat and feel like the oldest, most out of touch dude on the planet.

Sadly, the latter applies to Italy’s killer Black Rainbows. Pandemonium is the bands 6^th full length in over 10 years of existence and somehow this is the first I am hearing of them. Dammit, I feel like I have been missing out for the last decade!

If you are in the dark, like I was, Black Rainbows plays an absolutely smokin’ acid soaked, fuzzed out stoner space rock that is addicting to say the least. Pandemonium flies from beginning to end with an up tempo nature that somewhat shields the darker, doom laden lyrics throughout. The album sounds amazing. The recording is top notch and the sound is textured. Black Rainbows enhances the standard guitar, bass, drums and vocals with tons of effect, vocal clips, and organ that add the complexity and dynamic sound.

Black Rainbows roll masterfully from the beginning to the end of Pandemonium. The album kicks in right away with Sunrise, which is full of Fuzzed out, doom-laden swagger. The opening line of “Sunrise, you gotta die..” is tremendous. High to Hell follows with a groove heavy driving beat. It is the perfect track to drive your ’69 deep into the heart of the desert. It leads in to one of my favorite tracks. The Sacrifice is dark, rocking beast that is catchy as hell!

Grindstone is yet another killer track. It brings the heavy before breaking down into a 70’s inspired groove. Supernova and Asteroids is a brief bit of spaced out pop rock. The organ heavy Riding Fast ‘Til the End of Time follows and brings it still. A rather lengthy instrumental intro opens I Just Wanna Fire with it’s phaser heavy riffage keeps the good, dark times rolling.

The Abyss is another amazingly catchy, heavy ass piece of perfection. The riff heavy groove keeps your head above the pessimistic, sinking lyrics. There is also some amazing fret work and killer organ swirl to close out this beast. 13^th Step of the Pyramid closes the record with a slightly slower psychedelic groove. The track is heavy on phaser and effects and is a wicked, acid-soaked ending.

Black Rainbows kick around in the same territory as bands like Kadavar, Graveyard, and Fu Manchu. If you are a fan of these bands, then find Black Rainbows. Much like Fu Manchu’s excellent Clone of the Universe, Pandemonium deserves solid consideration for the Stoner/Fuzz rock record of the year. It is amazing that we are only in the beginning of 2018 and we have so much Heavy Fuzzed out goodness to be thankful full. Dig on Black Rainbows, I know I do (now)!

Review:

Twelve months after their last album Hawkdope was released, Black Rainbows have returned with their fifth album – Stellar Prophecy. Black Rainbows has a new bassist within their ranks. Stellar Prophecy has a more FUZZ driven sound compared to previous albums. You still get the same heavy as hell Stoner/Psych sound but the band has a more distinctive fuzzier sound.

Opening track – Electrify – opens with a fuzzed out heavy riff before the vocals appear. It seems like business as usual for Black Rainbows but the mood turns more psychedelic than ever before. The band is laying the groundwork for the whole tone of the album. It has a slightly different feel to Hawkdope and I feel that’s down to the addition of the new bassist. The sound is heavier and more fuzz based. The lyrics are simply written but who cares when the music is as good as this. Spaced out noises appear out of nowhere as Black Rainbows change into one of the most majestic power trio’s currently out there.

Second track – Woman – is Black Rainbows embracing 70s based Psych/Stoner Rock vibes like never before. Spurred on by a slow-paced psych rock riff and lead vocalist Gabriele revelling in his role that sees him deliver his best vocal performance on the album. Throw in some groovy organ sounds and you have one of the standout tracks on the album. The song becomes heavier and slightly faster as time moves on. It shows Black Rainbows are bursting with new and wild exciting ideas to entertain you with.

Third track – Golden Widow – sees the band opt for a more space rock sound with traces of psychedelic stoned out trance based vibes running through out its epic eleven minute run time. It’s perhaps the song that allows the band to experiment more with their music as it can be very progressive at times. The instrumental work is flawless on this song as Gabriele’s vocals drift in and out at different times. Black Rainbows deserve credit for mixing the different styles of sounds they have at their disposal. Stoner, Psych, Space Rock and Doom all held together by some intense jam-based freak out riffs.

The following three tracks (Evil Snake, It’s Time To Die and Keep The Secret) follows the same direct psych/stoner rock sound on the opening two tracks but Black Rainbows still experiment with their sound by adding different noises to the mix. I would say Keep The Secret is perhaps the most exciting song from that group of songs.

The final song – The Travel – is another epic song lasting almost ten minutes and it ends the album in the most glorious spaced out way possible. Expect huge spaced out riffs as the band slowly builds the atmosphere with slow-paced riffs and trippy vocals. Black Rainbows excel in creating loud and vibrant noises merged with intriguing soundclips.

Stellar Prophecy is another superb album to add to your Black Rainbows collection. The band has changed their sound in so many different ways on this album as they have a more epic feel to their music. Everything about this album oozes class. What more do you expect from one of Italy’s finest Psych/Stoner Metal bands. Stellar Prophecy could be the bands most defining album to date.
