US Heavy Psych Goldsmiths INSOMNIAC announce US spring tour with Howling Giant

Atlanta-based transcendental doom unit INSOMNIAC just announced an extensive spring US tour in support of Nashville progressive metallers Howling Giant this spring. The band recently released their debut album "Om Moksha Ritam" on Blues Funeral Recordings.

"This record is pure beauty." Doom Charts
“Breathtaking and brilliantly surreal.” Outlaws Of The Sun
“This bridges the big epic rock riffage with hypnotic pulses.” Abysmal Hymns
"This isn’t an album you background. It’s a trip, a drift, a weight, and a lift all at once.” Witching Buzz
“An experience that is truly mandatory for all who consider themselves even the most casual fans of heavy psych.” Headbanger Reviews

Atlanta's Insomniac coalesce onto our plane like a third eye opening into the beyond. On their debut record "Om Moksha Ritam", they deliver a brooding, heavy, and psychedelic journey, both physical and abstract, towering and transcendent. Insomniac drifts between this world and the next, hovering at the periphery of consciousness. REZN, King Buffalo and Dead Meadow are names that arise if trying to fit them into familiar confines, though it’s clear that fitting within confines isn’t really what they do.

About the upcoming spring tour, Insomniac drummer Amos Rifkin comments: "After the early success of our debut record Om 'Moksha Ritam' and tours supporting it this fall, we're champing at the bit to hit the road again in the new year, and especially to be a part of the inaugural Mojave Experience festival in Joshua Tree. We're humbled and honored to support such a fantastic band like Howling Giant and can't wait to travel cross-country making beautiful music together!"

You’ve got it all wrong. The Insomniac isn’t unable to sleep, the Insomniac chooses to evade sleep. We all fall down at some point, but between the waking world and our dreams exists the surreal. In pursuit of that space between, some of history’s most prominent visionaries would hold a physical object, like a spoon or a ball, while sitting in a chair, and allow themselves to succumb to sleep. As they drifted off, the object would fall, and the sound would awaken them at the periphery of unconsciousness. Now more alert than ever, their work could begin.

Such is Insomniac. A band that exists between this world and the next. A bouncing ball on the sound and rhythm of the universe. An aural guide. Writing their songs in the frequency of the earth, the Atlanta-based quintet's sound casts light on the magic and strange beauty in the balance between unconsciousness and dreams. Their debut album “Om Moksha Ritam” is a concept album that guides the listener through an aural and spiritual journey across multiple extreme environments, testing their resolve, principles, and commitment to adhering to the path.

Debut album "Om Moksha Ritam" is available on Blues Funeral Recordings via their online store, Bandcamp and on all streaming services.

Review

Psych Stoner Rockers King Buffalo are currently on the crest of a wave with sold out tours and performances across Europe and USA. Their live performances and recent albums have received acclaim from fans and critics alike. That rich vein of form will no doubt continue with their epic new album Regenerator. An album that closes off their recent trilogy of albums that started with The Burden Of Restlessness and Acheron. Two albums that showed a different creative side to the band and now Regenerator bridges the gap between those two albums whilst allowing King Buffalo the opportunity to forge heavier and different sounds.

This album captures the early classic sounds from King Buffalo whilst adapting a more adventurous Psychedelic spirit throughout the album. Echoes of Post-Rock, Space Rock and Sludge Rock are the main order of business here with a more direct cinematic vision. Spellbinding vocals and celestial lyrics can be heard within the outstanding title track Regenerator.

Regenerator is a nine minute opus that showcases why King Buffalo are perhaps the finest Psych Stoner Rock band currently around within the underground scene. Spacey and full of inventive melodic hooks with Sean’s vocals being super-friendly as ever. The music branches off into different themes and areas of music we’ve encountered over the last two albums but perhaps with more serious intent here. There’s a lovely energetic atmosphere on this album with King Buffalo being a tour-de-force when the heavier grooves appear.

Second song Mercury carries on the warm hearted nature of the opening song but with a more mellow Americana based sound. The Ambient noises inject a new wave of creativity we haven’t heard from the band before. Subtle lyrics and an understated performance keeps the mood interesting with a mellow Ambient/Post-Rock drive. That all changes when King Buffalo plays a more vibrant style of Psychedelic Stoner Rock with a violent Sludge Rock energy allowing the album to become something else you didn’t expect.

The opening two songs will tell the listener all they need to know for what to expect for the remainder of the album. However, I can still highlight my other favourite tracks from the album with Hours, Avalon and Firmament. As these tracks have the most powerful and emotional lyrics that do tug at the heartstrings at times.

The music is always constantly evolving to the next level of heaviness even when the mellow notes remain constantly in the background. This could be my favourite King Buffalo album yet. As it’s an unexpected and cinematic adventure that brings pure joy to me every time I listen to the album.

The production values are first rate which you would expect anyway being a King Buffalo album. Another highlight for me was the band relying more on Ambient Sounds and Post-Rock themes that gives an extra dimension of heaviness to their music. Regenerator is more sonically diverse compared to previous King Buffalo albums.

Regenerator is a modern day masterpiece and is without doubt one of the finest albums I’ve heard this year or any year for that matter.

KING BUFFALO ANNOUNCE "REGENERATOR" TO BE RELEASED SEPTEMBER 2ND & TOUR DATES!

Rochester, New York-based trio King Buffalo will issue their fifth full-length, Regenerator, on Sept. 2, 2022, as a self-release in North America and through Stickman Records in Europe. Preorders will be available on June 10th via http://kingbuffalo.bigcartel.com.

Written and recorded by the band with mixing and engineering by guitarist/vocalist Sean McVay and mastering by Bernie Matthews, the seven-song outing is the third in King Buffalo’s stated ‘pandemic trilogy,’ following Two of 2021’s Best Albums in The Burden of Restlessness and Acheron.

Both of those albums – like 2018’s Longing to Be the Mountain, 2016’s debut, Orion, and the various EPs and other offerings they’ve made over the last eight years – made bold declarations about who King Buffalo are as a band, and Regenerator is no different. As McVay, bassist/synthesist Dan Reynolds and drummer Scott Donaldson continue to explore the outer reaches of modern psychedelic songcraft, melding progressive rhythms, drifting atmospheres and accompanying surges of electricity, the new collection only further establishes them as one of the brightest lights shining in underground rock today.

As the third of three, Regenerator seems inherently to tie together the two LPs most immediately before it, and as King Buffalo unfold the leadoff title-track across nine and half minutes, it becomes clear just how truly they have marked out their own sonic presence. The later melodic highlight “Mammoth” – with McVay’s most confident vocal yet – shimmers with hope that somehow doesn’t come across as desperate, and as “Hours” engages classic space rock and the closing “Firmament” summarizes the first, second and third series installments, the final chapter of this trilogy becomes the essential cornerstone of King Buffalo’s work to-date.

Regenerator was written by King Buffalo in Rochester, NY at the Main Street Armory in 2021. Produced, engineered and mixed by Sean McVay, and mastered by Bernie Matthews. The artwork was created by Mike Del Rosario, with the album layout by Scott Donaldson.

Listen to the album title track, just exclusively premiered with Metal Injection HERE!

Regenerator Tracklist:

1. Regenerator
2. Mercury
3. Hours
4. Interlude

6. Avalon

The band returned to live activity late last year, touring alongside Clutch and more recently a full North American spring tour with Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. By the time Regenerator arrives, they will have completed a UK and European headlining tour with festival appearances in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium and Denmark.

Review

Acheron is the second album of a planned trilogy that King Buffalo started back in June 2021 with The Burden Of Restlessness. So almost six months later we have the second part with Acheron meaning “River Of Woe” in Greek. The band are also calling this album “The Cave Record” as it was recorded in an actual cave during COVID-19 Pandemic. This album does have elements of real-life sounding Water on certain stages of the album.

Acheron is perhaps a classic sounding King Buffalo compared to The Burden Of Restlessness. As that record had a deep “TOOL” influence” at its main core. This is King Buffalo doing what they do best by playing haunting Psychedelic Stoner Rock songs with emotional melodies, vocals and trippy lyrics that bring the Psych Spaced Out element back from their earlier releases to a more grounded Prog Rock feeling. The album does have a lot of Ambient textures on this album which was another welcome surprise.

The album contains four tracks with all the songs lasting around the ten minute mark. So Prog Rock is the main key here with each song having the perfect balance of Ambient based Psych Stoner Rock/Metal epic riffs.

Opening song - Acheron - is the perfect song to open the album with. As it’s quite hopeful but also quite bleak when the gloomy Post-Stoner parts appear. The song sees the band explore their Psych Rock influences whilst bringing a heavy and almost Prog Metal vibe heard on their last album. This is the best of both worlds as King Buffalo brings an isolated feeling to this song. The grooves and solos are plentiful with majestic vocals to match.

Second song - Zephyr - feels like it could have easily came off one of their earlier releases for the first few moments with it’s upbeat lyrics. The music does go slightly Post-Rock but that’s what King Buffalo are so good at. Blending different cinematic sounds to a more upbeat style and then bringing a heavier atmospheric style that changes the course of the song for the better. They do this on this song with the swirling ambient moments that play for the first part of the song. The instrumentals work so well with the album being recorded in a cave. This gives this song and perhaps the album a more “EARTHLY” feeling.

The other two songs on the album Shadows and Cerberus does offer King Buffalo the opportunity to play a heavier style of music but still retaining the core energy of the opening two songs. Shadows is perhaps the standout song on the album for myself. It has a more free-flowing attitude to the point you don’t know how the song ends or up which direction the album will take next.

Production values are first rate with King Buffalo bringing a more dynamic sound and presence compared to their last album. Acheron is another wonderfully epic album from the band and one that will allow the guys to easily have another Best Album Of 2021 to their credit. Well, it’s already claimed a spot on mine along with The Burden Of Restfulness.

King Buffalo are perhaps one of the most forward thinking Psychedelic Stoner Rock Bands we have in the field. There is still one more chapter to come from the band and I for one am truly exciting what awaits us all.

KING BUFFALO Release Fourth Record & Film, "Acheron", On December 3rd + Announce Tour Dates!

ROCHESTER, NY – King Buffalo’s fourth full-length record, Acheron, will be released on December 3, 2021, issued by the band directly (US) and in Europe through Stickman Records. The widely-hailed heavy psych outfit will have vinyl and CD preorders available on October 22, via http://kingbuffalo.bigcartel.com.

What will inevitably be known as ‘the cave record,’ Acheron is the second King Buffalo LP of 2021. It follows Spring’s The Burden of Restlessness and finds the Rochester, New York, trio of guitarist/vocalist Sean McVay, bassist Dan Reynolds and drummer Scott Donaldson expanding their sound once again.

Both records – and an intended third in the series to follow in 2022 – were born of the pandemic-era touring shutdown, and The Burden of Restlessness showed that in a grim theme and last-minute daring to hope for something better. Acheron – named for the “river of woe” in Greek mythology – brings the tension and disquiet of the prior offering into a new context.

To put the four extended songs of Acheron to tape, the band traveled three hours east from Rochester to Howe Caverns in NY, recording with trusted engineer Grant Husselman and videographer Adam Antalek – who worked on their Quarantine Sessions early in 2020 – to document a day-long live session in a cave. In the cave. “Underground” in the most literal sense. It is fitting that Acheron was recorded near water. A stream flowing is audible at various points throughout the album, including at the very start of the opening title-track.

In sound, Acheron is likewise spacious and fluid. Where The Burden of Restlessness was sharper angles, Acheron doesn’t round off those edges as much as add complexity to the shape of the whole. In some ways, the wash of tone in “Zephyr” will be familiar to those who took on 2018’s Longing to Be the Mountain or the band’s 2016 debut, Orion – let alone any of the four EPs they’ve done alone the way – but in “Shadows” and “Cerberus,” the band’s intent becomes clear. Now, King Buffalo just shared a first trailer, follow them into the cave and check out the teaser right here:

The tracks on King Buffalo's new output are not just isolating songs from a single writing period to frame different sides of their style. They’re telling a story as much about their sonic growth as about that time they loaded all their gear into a cave (no easy feat) and hit record. Acheron pushes forward from The Burden of Restlessness; still just months old received by fans as an immediate album-of-the-year contender. It takes the communion with and contemplation of the organic that’s been so much a part of who King Buffalo were before and uses it to inform who they’ve become, are still becoming.

Because the story isn’t over yet, of course, and whatever King Buffalo bring to the third chapter in this purported trilogy will have its own plot thickening to do. Acheron, with its graceful composition, patient delivery and ownership of its more intense aspects, sees King Buffalo become all the more engaging and less predictable en route to whatever it is that comes next.

The album was written by King Buffalo in Rochester, NY at the Main Street Armory in 2021. Produced by the band, engineered and mixed by Grant Husselman, and mastered by Bernie Matthews. The artwork was created by Ryan T. Hancock with cover fonts by Mike Turzanski and album layout by Scott Donaldson.
